Thai เอา + thing + มา packages handling and motion toward an adopted center: เอาร่มมา “bring the umbrella here/along.” เอา introduces the thing brought under the agent's control, while มา traces its path toward the speaker, listener, destination, or narrative viewpoint. A single English verb bring often translates both contributions.
The construction is productive, and the theme normally stands between the two predicates. It can end after มา, or continue into a longer chain such as เอาร่มมาเก็บ “bring the umbrella over and put it away.”
The basic handled-motion frame
| Slot | Contribution | Possible substitutions |
|---|---|---|
| เอา | take, get, handle | เอา |
| theme | the entity carried | ร่ม, แฟ้ม, เก้าอี้, อาหาร |
| มา | motion toward the adopted center | มา |
| later action (optional) | purpose or disposal at the center | ให้, วาง, เก็บ, ส่ง |
ฝนจะตก เอาร่มมาด้วยนะคะ
fon cha tok ao rom ma duai na kha
It's going to rain; bring an umbrella with you. (ordinary polite reminder, female speaker)
ผมเอาแฟ้มที่ขอมาครบแล้วครับ
phom ao faem thi kho ma khrop laeo khrap
I've brought all the folders you requested. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
In the second sentence, มา presents the folders as having arrived at the relevant center. Final แล้ว marks the newly attained situation; it does not turn มา into a past-tense ending.
ช่วยเอาเก้าอี้อีกตัวมาวางตรงนี้หน่อยค่ะ
chuai ao kao i ik tua ma wang trong ni noi kha
Please bring another chair and put it right here. (ordinary polite request, female speaker)
The chair is the object of เอา, the entity whose path มา traces, and the understood object of วาง. Thai states it once because the sharing is clear.
The center is chosen in discourse
The center is often where the speaker is now, but not inevitably. A phone caller can adopt the listener's location; a narrator can adopt the destination where the next scene unfolds. What matters is the viewpoint from which the path counts as “toward.”
ฉันรออยู่ที่ห้องประชุมนะ เอาเอกสารมาที่นี่ได้เลยค่ะ
chan ro yu thi hong prachum na ao ekkasan ma thi ni dai loei kha
I'm waiting in the meeting room; you can bring the documents here. (ordinary polite statement, female speaker; speaker's location is center)
ผมกำลังเอาตัวอย่างสินค้ามาให้คุณที่ร้านครับ แล้วเอาสัญญามาด้วย
phom kamlang ao tuayang sinkha ma hai khun thi ran khrap laeo ao sanya ma duai
I'm bringing the product sample to you at the shop, and I'm bringing the contract along too. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; listener's shop is adopted as center)
The second speaker is not yet at the shop. Nevertheless, the shop can serve as the conversational center because the addressee will be there. Thai deixis is perspectival, not simply a GPS relation to the speaker's current body.
Minimal contrast: เอามา versus เอาไป
เอาถาดมาวางบนโต๊ะนี้ค่ะ
ao that ma wang bon to ni kha
Bring the tray and put it on this table. (ordinary polite instruction, female speaker; motion toward this table)
เอาถาดไปวางบนโต๊ะโน้นค่ะ
ao that pai wang bon to non kha
Take the tray and put it on that table over there. (ordinary polite instruction, female speaker; motion away/onward)
Only มา/ไป changes, yet the path reverses relative to the adopted center. The theme stays between เอา and the directional in both patterns. See the fuller deictic-direction guide.
Productive longer chains
After เอา + theme + มา, another predicate can state what happens when the theme reaches the center.
| Frame | Model | Event structure |
|---|---|---|
| เอา + theme + มาให้ + recipient | เอาน้ำมาให้คุณตา | bring, then transfer |
| เอา + theme + มาวาง + place | เอากล่องมาวางหน้าห้อง | bring, then place |
| เอา + theme + มาเก็บ + place | เอาอุปกรณ์มาเก็บในตู้ | bring, then store |
| เอา + theme + มาใช้ + purpose | เอาแท็บเล็ตมาใช้ประชุม | bring, then use |
พยาบาลเอาน้ำมาให้คุณตาแล้วค่ะ
phayaban ao nam ma hai khun ta laeo kha
The nurse has brought Grandfather some water. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; toward-motion followed by transfer)
ช่างเอาอุปกรณ์มาเก็บในห้องด้านหลังครับ
chang ao upakon ma kep nai hong dan lang khrap
The technician brought the equipment over and stored it in the back room. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; shared theme across three predicates)
วันนี้ฉันเอาแท็บเล็ตมาใช้จดบันทึกค่ะ
wan ni chan ao thaep let ma chai chot banthuek kha
Today I brought a tablet to use for taking notes. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
The surface chain contains several unchanged predicates. English may translate เอา…มาให้ as bring someone something and เอา…มาใช้ as bring something to use, but Thai has no infinitive marking here. The event relation comes from order and shared participants.
Serialization, not just adjacency
The predicates belong to one chain when one handling-and-motion event leads directly to the later use or disposal. A pause, a new subject, or a coordinator can instead create separate clauses.
ผมเอาเครื่องมือมาที่บ้าน แล้วช่างอีกคนก็เอาไปซ่อมรถครับ
phom ao khrueangmue ma thi ban laeo chang ik khon ko ao pai som rot khrap
I brought the tools to the house, and then another technician took them to repair the car. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; two clauses with different agents)
This is not one shared-subject serial event. The second agent is overt, and แล้ว…ก็ sequences two assertions. Compare ผมเอาเครื่องมือมาซ่อมรถ, where I bring and use the tools as part of one purpose chain.
Frequent expressions also need lexical care. เอามา in เอาเรื่องนี้มาพิจารณา may involve figurative “bringing into consideration,” while เอาไปเอามา is a conventional discourse expression meaning roughly “as things went back and forth / in the end.” A transparent handled-motion lesson does not license word-for-word analysis of every fixed string.
Aspect and negation
ตอนนี้พนักงานกำลังเอาอาหารมาส่งอยู่ค่ะ
ton ni phanak ngan kamlang ao ahan ma song yu kha
The employee is bringing the food over for delivery now. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; ongoing viewpoint over the chain)
เมื่อเช้าผมไม่ได้เอาคอมพิวเตอร์มาครับ เพราะวันนี้ไม่ได้ใช้
muea chao phom mai dai ao khomphiotoe ma khrap phro wan ni mai dai chai
I didn't bring the computer this morning because I'm not using it today. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; broad negation denies bringing)
กำลัง...อยู่ can frame the unfolding complex event. ไม่ได้ before เอา denies the handled-motion event as a whole. Neither construction changes the form of เอา, มา, or ส่ง.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
A receptionist and a courier are speaking by phone:
ตอนนี้พัสดุอยู่กับคุณหรือยังคะ
ton ni phatsadu yu kap khun rue yang kha
Do you have the parcel with you yet? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
อยู่กับผมแล้วครับ กำลังเอามาที่เคาน์เตอร์
yu kap phom laeo khrap kamlang ao ma thi khaotoe
I have it now. I'm bringing it to the counter. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; parcel omitted as recoverable)
พอมาถึงแล้ว เอามาวางข้างเครื่องพิมพ์นะคะ
pho ma thueng laeo ao ma wang khang khrueang phim na kha
When you arrive, put it beside the printer, please. (ordinary polite instruction, female speaker)
ได้ครับ อีกประมาณสองนาทีถึง
dai khrap ik praman song nathi thueng
Certainly. I'll be there in about two minutes. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
Common Mistakes
1. Putting the theme after มา
❌ ช่วยเอามาเก้าอี้อีกตัวค่ะ
Incorrect—the object of เอา normally comes before directional มา.
✅ ช่วยเอาเก้าอี้อีกตัวมาค่ะ
chuai ao kao i ik tua ma kha
Please bring another chair. (ordinary polite request, female speaker)
2. Using มา for an explicitly outward destination
❌ เราอยู่ในครัว เอาจานมาวางที่โต๊ะนอกบ้านครับ
Wrong for the intended movement away from the kitchen center to the outside table.
✅ เราอยู่ในครัว เอาจานไปวางที่โต๊ะนอกบ้านครับ
rao yu nai khrua ao chan pai wang thi to nok ban khrap
We're in the kitchen; take the plates to the table outside. (ordinary polite instruction, male speaker)
3. Treating มา as a past-tense suffix
❌ เมื่อวานผมมาเอาแฟ้มมาเพราะทุกอดีตต้องมีมาครับ
Incorrect analysis—มา is not a general past marker; the time expression already locates the event.
✅ เมื่อวานผมเอาแฟ้มมาที่สำนักงานครับ
muea wan phom ao faem ma thi samnakngan khrap
Yesterday I brought the folder to the office. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; มา retains a toward-directional contribution)
4. Repeating the shared theme
❌ ฉันเอากล่องมากล่องวางตรงนี้ค่ะ
Incorrect in the intended shared-theme chain—the repeated noun disrupts the natural linking.
✅ ฉันเอากล่องมาวางตรงนี้ค่ะ
chan ao klong ma wang trong ni kha
I brought the box and put it here. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
Key Takeaways
- เอา + theme + มา expresses handled motion toward an adopted center.
- The center can be the speaker, listener, destination, or narrative viewpoint.
- The same theme can continue unspoken into ให้, วาง, เก็บ, or ใช้.
- Time and aspect come from context and markers; Thai never conjugates the verbs in the chain.
