พาไป and พามา with Accompanied Motion

Thai พา + person/animal + ไป/มา presents accompanied or guided motion. In พาลูกไปหาหมอ, the parent takes the child along to see a doctor; in พาเพื่อนมาบ้าน, the subject brings a friend toward the home adopted as center. The person after พา is not a passive parcel: that participant moves too, usually under the subject's guidance, care, or initiative.

English divides these scenes among take, bring, lead, and show. Thai keeps พา stable and lets ไป/มา, the destination, and the following purpose predicate refine the event.

The participant structure

SlotRolePossible substitutions
agent + พาperson who guides or accompaniesแม่พา, เพื่อนพา, ไกด์พา
companionperson or animal moving alongลูก, แขก, สุนัข
ไป/มาpath away/onward or toward centerไป, มา
destination/purposewhere or why they moveโรงพยาบาล, ชมเมือง, กินข้าว

พรุ่งนี้แม่จะพาลูกไปหาหมอค่ะ

phrung ni mae cha pha luk pai ha mo kha

Tomorrow Mum will take her child to see the doctor. (ordinary polite statement, female speaker)

แม่ is understood as the agent of พา and a participant in the journey. ลูก is the person guided along and also the understood subject of the encounter expressed by หาหมอ in this conventional purpose chain.

ผมพาเพื่อนมาทานข้าวที่บ้านครับ

phom pha phuean ma than khao thi ban khrap

I brought a friend over to eat at my home. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; ทาน is polite-neutral here)

ไกด์พานักท่องเที่ยวไปชมวัดเก่าครับ

kai pha nakthongthiao pai chom wat kao khrap

The guide took the tourists to see the old temple. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

The following activity is a bare Thai predicate, not an infinitive. จะ in the first example scopes over the whole prospective trip; none of the verbs conjugates.

💡
After พา, identify two linked movers: the guiding agent and the companion. The companion is the object of พา but participates in the motion and often in the following activity.

ไป versus มา: the same accompanied event, a different center

พี่จะพาหลานไปสนามเด็กเล่นค่ะ

phi cha pha lan pai sanam dek len kha

Phi will take the grandchild to the playground. (ordinary polite statement, female speaker; path is away/onward)

เย็นนี้พี่จะพาหลานมาที่บ้านเราค่ะ

yen ni phi cha pha lan ma thi ban rao kha

This evening Phi will bring the grandchild to our house. (ordinary polite statement, female speaker; our house is the center)

The relationship between Phi and the child does not change. ไป traces the shared path away or onward; มา traces it toward the adopted center. When speaking by phone, the listener's location can become that center:

คุณอยู่ที่งานแล้วใช่ไหมครับ เดี๋ยวผมพาแขกมา

khun yu thi ngan laeo chai mai khrap diao phom pha khaek ma

You're at the event already, right? I'll bring the guests over shortly. (ordinary polite question and statement, male speaker; listener's event is adopted as center)

This perspectival choice is treated more fully on the directional page.

พา is not simply เอา for animate nouns

เอา foregrounds taking control of a theme and is the neutral choice for handled objects. พา foregrounds a companion's motion under another participant's guidance. People can occur with เอา in special meanings—choosing, wanting, assigning, or treating someone as a theme—but that does not make เอาคนไป the neutral substitute for “take someone somewhere.”

ช่วยเอากระเป๋าไปที่รถหน่อยค่ะ

chuai ao krapao pai thi rot noi kha

Please take the bag to the car. (ordinary polite request, female speaker; handled object)

ช่วยพาคุณยายไปที่รถหน่อยค่ะ

chuai pha khun yai pai thi rot noi kha

Please accompany Grandmother to the car. (ordinary polite request, female speaker; person moving with assistance)

The distinction reflects participant structure, not merely animacy. A dog being led for a walk naturally takes พา, while a small animal being physically carried in a container could be construed as a handled theme with เอา. Context decides which relation the speaker foregrounds.

หลังอาหารเย็นผมพาสุนัขไปเดินเล่นทุกวันครับ

lang ahan yen phom pha sunak pai doen len thuk wan khrap

After dinner I take the dog for a walk every day. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

💡
Choose by event structure: use พา when someone goes along under another person's guidance or accompaniment; use เอา when an entity is primarily handled or transferred.

Following predicates and shared roles

The material after ไป/มา may name a destination, an activity, or both.

Productive frameModelInterpretation
พา + companion + ไป/มา + placeพาแขกมาสำนักงานaccompanied motion to a place
พา + companion + ไป/มา + activityพาเด็กไปว่ายน้ำmotion for the companion's activity
พา + companion + ไป/มา + พบ + personพาลูกค้าไปพบผู้จัดการmotion toward an encounter
พา + companion + เดิน + directionพาแขกเดินขึ้นชั้นสองguidance plus manner/path

เจ้าหน้าที่พาลูกค้าไปพบผู้จัดการที่ชั้นสามค่ะ

chaonathi pha luk kha pai phop phuchatkan thi chan sam kha

The officer took the customer to meet the manager on the third floor. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)

ครูพาเด็ก ๆ เดินข้ามถนนตรงทางม้าลายค่ะ

khru pha dek dek doen kham thanon trong thang ma lai kha

The teacher led the children across the road at the crosswalk. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)

The guided participant remains linked across the chain. In the first, the customer meets the manager; in the second, both teacher and children walk across. World knowledge and each verb's argument frame help resolve the exact sharing.

Serialization versus separate clauses

A compact พา…ไป/มา… chain describes one accompanied-motion event. If the companion later acts independently, Thai can mark a new assertion.

ผมพาเพื่อนไปถึงสถานี แล้วเขาก็ขึ้นรถไฟคนเดียวครับ

phom pha phuean pai thueng sathani laeo khao ko khuen rotfai khon diao khrap

I took my friend as far as the station, and then he boarded the train alone. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; the second clause has its own subject)

แล้วเขาก็ signals that the friend's boarding is a separate clause, not simply another shared-predicate stage performed by both participants. Serialization and coordination can therefore occur in the same sentence.

Aspect, negation, and scope

พ่อกำลังพาลูกเดินกลับบ้านอยู่ครับ

pho kamlang pha luk doen klap ban yu khrap

The father is walking his child home. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; the accompanied return is in progress)

วันนี้ฉันไม่ได้พาคุณแม่ไปตลาดค่ะ เพราะท่านไม่สบาย

wan ni chan mai dai pha khun mae pai talat kha phro than mai sabai

I didn't take my mother to the market today because she wasn't well. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; broad negation denies the trip)

Initial ไม่ได้ denies the larger accompanied-motion event. To say that the trip happened but a later purpose failed, state that contrast explicitly rather than copying English auxiliary order.

เขาพาลูกไปโรงเรียนแล้ว แต่วันนี้ลูกไม่ได้เข้าเรียนค่ะ

khao pha luk pai rongrian laeo tae wan ni luk mai dai khao rian kha

She took her child to school, but today the child did not attend class. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; second assertion has an overt subject and contrasts with completed motion)

Ordinary-polite dialogue

A hotel employee is arranging transport for visitors:

พรุ่งนี้มีใครพาแขกไปสนามบินไหมคะ

phrung ni mi khrai pha khaek pai sanambin mai kha

Is anyone taking the guests to the airport tomorrow? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)

ผมพาไปเองครับ รถจะมารับตอนแปดโมง

phom pha pai eng khrap rot cha ma rap ton paet mong

I'll take them myself. The car will pick us up at eight. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; guests omitted as recoverable)

ขากลับช่วยพาคุณอรุณมาที่โรงแรมด้วยได้ไหมคะ

kha klap chuai pha khun arun ma thi rongraem duai dai mai kha

On the return trip, could you bring Khun Arun to the hotel too? (ordinary polite request, female speaker)

ได้ครับ ผมจะโทรหาเขาก่อนออกเดินทาง

dai khrap phom cha tho ha khao kon ok doen thang

Certainly. I'll call him before leaving. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)

Common Mistakes

1. Placing the companion after ไป

❌ แม่พาไปลูกหาหมอค่ะ

Incorrect—the participant guided by พา belongs before the directional.

✅ แม่พาลูกไปหาหมอค่ะ

mae pha luk pai ha mo kha

Mum takes her child to see the doctor. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)

2. Using เอา as the neutral verb for accompanying a person

❌ ช่วยเอาคุณยายไปห้องรอตรวจค่ะ

Wrong for the intended respectful request to accompany Grandmother; เอา construes her as a handled theme.

✅ ช่วยพาคุณยายไปห้องรอตรวจค่ะ

chuai pha khun yai pai hong ro truat kha

Please accompany Grandmother to the examination waiting room. (ordinary polite request, female speaker)

3. Choosing ไป for arrival toward the speaker

❌ ฉันรออยู่บ้าน พาเพื่อนไปหาฉันนะคะ

Wrong for the intended ‘bring your friend here’; the speaker's home is the explicit center.

✅ ฉันรออยู่บ้าน พาเพื่อนมาหาฉันนะคะ

chan ro yu ban pha phuean ma ha chan na kha

I'm waiting at home; bring your friend over to see me. (ordinary polite request, female speaker)

4. Repeating จะ before each predicate

❌ พรุ่งนี้ผมจะพาแขกจะไปจะชมเมืองครับ

Incorrect—one prospective marker can frame the entire chain.

✅ พรุ่งนี้ผมจะพาแขกไปชมเมืองครับ

phrung ni phom cha pha khaek pai chom mueang khrap

Tomorrow I'll take the guests sightseeing. (ordinary polite statement, male speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • พา + companion + ไป/มา links a guiding agent with another participant who moves along.
  • Put the companion directly after พา and before the directional.
  • Choose ไป or มา from the adopted deictic center, not from the English verb alone.
  • Use เอา for handled themes and พา for guided or accompanied participants in the neutral contrast.
