เอา as Take, Select, and Constructional Verb

Thai เอา can mean “take,” “choose,” or—in a shop and other choice contexts—“want/have this one.” It also begins productive handling chains such as เอาหนังสือไปคืน “take the book away to return it,” เอาน้ำมาให้ “bring water here for someone,” and เอากระเป๋าไว้ตรงนี้ “leave the bag here.” The object after เอา is shared by the following directional or placement predicate.

English distributes these meanings across take, bring, want, put, and keep. Thai keeps เอา unchanged and lets participant order, direction, and situation choose the interpretation.

Selection and ordinary “I’ll take...”

In a service encounter, เอา + noun phrase makes a direct selection. It is normal everyday Thai, but delivery matters: the appropriate polite particle and a cooperative tone keep a short choice from sounding abrupt.

เอาเสื้อสีฟ้าตัวนี้ค่ะ

ao suea si fa tua ni kha

I'll take this blue shirt. (ordinary polite shopping speech, female customer)

ผมเอากาแฟเย็นหวานน้อยหนึ่งแก้วครับ

phom ao kafae yen wan noi nueng kaeo khrap

I'll have one lightly sweetened iced coffee. (ordinary polite ordering, male customer)

ไม่เอาของหวานแล้วค่ะ ขอบคุณค่ะ

mai ao khongwan laeo kha khopkhun kha

I won't have dessert after all, thank you. (ordinary polite refusal, female speaker)

เอา is more direct than an elaborate ต้องการ request, yet it is not inherently rude. Bare เอาอันนี้ among close companions is (informal); เอาอันนี้ค่ะ/ครับ is ordinary polite service speech.

💡
In a shop, the noun phrase after เอา must still be a well-formed Thai noun phrase. เอาอันนี้ uses generic classifier อัน; with a known noun, use its normal classifier pattern, such as เสื้อตัวนี้.

เอา + object + ไป: take it away

With ไป, the object is handled and moves away from the current deictic center or onward toward another destination. A following action can state what happens next. The verbs are adjacent because they package one ordered event, not because ไป is an infinitive.

ช่วยเอาเอกสารนี้ไปส่งฝ่ายบัญชีหน่อยครับ

chuai ao ekkasan ni pai song fai banchi noi khrap

Please take this document to the accounts department. (ordinary polite request, male speaker)

ฉันจะเอาหนังสือไปคืนพรุ่งนี้ค่ะ

chan cha ao nangsue pai khuen phrung ni kha

I'll take the book back tomorrow. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; destination recoverable)

อย่าลืมเอาร่มไปด้วยนะครับ

ya luem ao rom pai duai na khrap

Don't forget to take an umbrella with you. (ordinary polite reminder, male speaker)

The object immediately follows เอา: เอาเอกสารไปส่ง, not English-influenced เอาไปเอกสาร. Material after ไป can specify a later action or destination.

เอา + object + มา: bring it toward the center

มา points toward the speaker, addressee, or established scene. A parent at home can say เอากุญแจมาให้แม่; the same person speaking about movement from home toward an office may choose เอากุญแจไป. This is viewpoint, not a fixed translation of English bring.

พรุ่งนี้เอาบัตรประชาชนมาด้วยนะคะ

phrung ni ao bat prachachon ma duai na kha

Please bring your identity card tomorrow. (ordinary polite reminder, female speaker)

พนักงานเอาน้ำมาให้แล้วครับ

phanak ngan ao nam ma hai laeo khrap

The employee has brought the water over. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; beneficiary is recoverable)

เอากล่องนั้นมาใกล้ ๆ หน่อยค่ะ

ao klong nan ma klai klai noi kha

Please bring that box a little closer. (ordinary polite request, female speaker)

The ไป and มา page develops deictic viewpoint. In these chains, เอา supplies intentional handling, while ไป/มา supplies direction.

เอา + object + ไว้: put, leave, or keep

ไว้ presents an object as placed or retained for a later-relevant state. A place often follows, but it may be omitted when already clear.

เอากระเป๋าไว้ข้างประตูก็ได้ค่ะ

ao krapao wai khang pratu ko dai kha

You can leave the bag beside the door. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

ผมเอาใบเสร็จไว้ในกระเป๋าครับ

phom ao bai set wai nai krapao khrap

I'll keep the receipt in my bag. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

ของที่ยังไม่ใช้ เอาไว้บนชั้นก่อนนะคะ

khong thi yang mai chai ao wai bon chan kon na kha

Put the things we aren't using yet on the shelf for now. (ordinary polite instruction, female speaker; object is topicalized)

This use is broader than literal English take. The construction profiles causing the object to remain available at a location. It is separate from existential อยู่, which merely locates something.

💡
Read เอา...ไป/มา/ไว้ as a construction with a shared object. เอา handles it, ไป/มา directs it, and ไว้ leaves it in a relevant state or place.

Omission, negation, time, and aspect

Once a seller has shown two items, เอาไหมคะ can mean “Would you like it?” and เอาครับ can answer “Yes, I'll take it.” The omitted item is recoverable; a listener cannot infer an entirely new object from เอา alone.

ใบนี้ลดราคาอยู่ เอาไหมคะ

bai ni lot rakha yu ao mai kha

This one is on sale. Would you like it? (ordinary polite service question, female speaker)

เอาครับ ใส่ถุงให้ด้วยนะครับ

ao khrap sai thung hai duai na khrap

Yes, I'll take it. Please put it in a bag too. (ordinary polite reply, male customer; item omitted)

Negation precedes เอา when the taking or selection is denied: ไม่เอา. For past nonoccurrence, ไม่ได้เอามา means “did not bring it”; ได้ and แล้ว do not conjugate เอา.

เมื่อเช้าผมไม่ได้เอากุญแจมาครับ

muea chao phom mai dai ao kunchae ma khrap

I didn't bring the key this morning. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

เดี๋ยวฉันเอาอาหารไปแช่ตู้เย็นค่ะ

diao chan ao ahan pai chae tu yen kha

I'll put the food in the refrigerator in a moment. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

Ordinary-polite dialogue

รับชาเย็นหรือกาแฟเย็นดีคะ

rap cha yen rue kafae yen di kha

Would you prefer iced tea or iced coffee? (polite service question, female clerk)

เอาชาเย็นหวานน้อยครับ

ao cha yen wan noi khrap

I'll have a lightly sweetened iced tea. (ordinary polite reply, male customer)

รับกลับบ้านไหมคะ

rap klap ban mai kha

Is that to take home? (polite service question, female clerk)

ครับ แล้วช่วยเอาหลอดใส่ถุงให้ด้วยครับ

khrap laeo chuai ao lot sai thung hai duai khrap

Yes, and please put a straw in the bag too. (ordinary polite reply, male customer)

Common Mistakes

1. Putting the shared object after ไป

❌ ช่วยเอาไปเอกสารนี้ครับ

Incorrect—the handled object follows เอา before directional ไป.

✅ ช่วยเอาเอกสารชุดนี้ไปให้หัวหน้าครับ

chuai ao ekkasan chut ni pai hai huana khrap

Please take this set of documents to the supervisor. (ordinary polite request, male speaker)

2. Choosing มา without the intended deictic center

❌ พรุ่งนี้ไปทำงานแล้วเอาเอกสารกลับมาบ้านค่ะ

Wrong for the intended movement from home to the office; มา points back toward the home viewpoint.

✅ พรุ่งนี้ไปทำงานแล้วเอาเอกสารไปด้วยค่ะ

phrung ni pai tham ngan laeo ao ekkasan pai duai kha

Tomorrow I'll go to work and take the documents with me. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

3. Moving ไม่ after เอา

❌ ผมเอาถุงไม่ครับ

Incorrect neutral negation—ไม่ precedes เอา.

✅ ผมไม่เอาถุงครับ ขอบคุณครับ

phom mai ao thung khrap khopkhun khrap

I don't need a bag, thank you. (ordinary polite refusal, male customer)

4. Omitting the classifier before a demonstrative

❌ ฉันเอานี้ค่ะ

Incorrect ordinary selection—the demonstrative needs an appropriate noun or classifier host.

✅ ฉันเอาอันสีเขียวค่ะ

chan ao an si khiao kha

I'll take the green one. (ordinary polite shopping speech, female customer)

5. Attaching แล้ว to เอา as a past ending

❌ เมื่อวานผมเอาแล้วหนังสือกลับบ้านครับ

Incorrect—แล้ว is not a past-tense suffix, and the object must follow เอา.

✅ เมื่อวานผมเอาหนังสือกลับบ้านแล้วครับ

muea wan phom ao nangsue klap ban laeo khrap

I took the book home yesterday. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • เอา + noun phrase selects or takes something; in service speech, particles and delivery calibrate directness.
  • เอา + object + ไป/มา/ไว้ packages handling with direction or retained placement.
  • The object belongs immediately after เอา and is understood by later predicates in the chain.
  • เอา remains invariant; negation, time expressions, aspect, direction, and recoverable omission are separate choices.
