ถ้า…ก็ Real and Open Conditionals

Thai uses ถ้า P, (ก็) Q to make one situation the condition under which another holds: ถ้าฝนหยุด เราก็ออกเดินทาง “if the rain stops, we set off.” The pattern covers dependable cause-and-effect relations, repeated policies, and genuinely open future possibilities. It does not divide into English-style “zero” and “first” conditional conjugations.

The architecture matters more than a word-for-word translation. ถ้า opens the condition, while ก็ can resume the consequence. Subjects may be repeated, changed, or omitted according to discourse, and time or modality stays inside the clause whose meaning it modifies.

The condition–consequence frame

The most transparent order is ถ้า + condition, consequence. An overt ก็ before the consequence predicate reinforces that the second clause follows from the first, but it is not required whenever the relation is already obvious.

ถ้าแตะตรงนี้ แผนที่จะขยายครับ

tha tae trong ni phaen thi cha khayai khrap

If you tap here, the map will enlarge. (ordinary-polite demonstration, male speaker)

ถ้ามีโต๊ะว่าง เราจะย้ายไปนั่งข้างในค่ะ

tha mi to wang rao cha yai pai nang khang nai kha

If there is a free table, we'll move inside. (ordinary-polite open plan, female speaker)

ถ้าพัสดุมาถึงแล้ว ฝากวางไว้ที่โต๊ะผมด้วยนะครับ

tha phatsadu ma thueng laeo fak wang wai thi to phom duai na khrap

If the parcel has arrived, please leave it on my desk. (ordinary-polite request, male speaker)

No verb changes shape in these examples. แล้ว in the parcel condition tests whether arrival has been attained; จะ in the table example presents the planned consequence. English tense labels do not determine either choice.

💡
Bracket the sentence before translating it: [ถ้า P] [(subject) ก็ Q]. Then place time, negation, aspect, and modality inside the clause whose proposition they belong to.

What ก็ contributes

Conditional ก็ is a resumptive linker: it announces that the following comment is being made on the basis of the condition just supplied. With an overt consequence subject, the ordinary order is subject + ก็ + predicate.

ถ้าคุณพร้อม เราเริ่มเลยค่ะ

tha khun phrom rao roem loei kha

If you're ready, we'll start now. (ordinary-polite statement, female speaker; consequence clear without ก็)

ถ้าคุณพร้อม เราก็เริ่มเลยค่ะ

tha khun phrom rao ko roem loei kha

If you're ready, then we'll start now. (ordinary-polite statement, female speaker; consequence explicitly resumed by ก็)

The truth conditions can be nearly identical. The version with ก็ makes the dependency more audible and can sound more responsive to a condition already under discussion. Without an overt subject, ก็ directly precedes the predicate.

ถ้าเอกสารครบก็อนุมัติได้ครับ

tha ekkasan khrop ko anumat dai khrap

If the documents are complete, it can be approved. (formal-polite procedural explanation, male speaker; institutional actor omitted)

Do not translate ก็ mechanically as then. Its wider linking behavior also includes addition, sequence, and stance. The dedicated ก็ guide explains those uses; here, the preceding condition is its anchor.

Clause order and information structure

The consequence may come first, followed by a final ถ้า clause. This order presents the decision or offer as the main news and adds its limitation afterward.

ผมจะแจ้งผลทางอีเมลวันนี้ ถ้าคณะกรรมการตัดสินทันครับ

phom cha chaeng phon thang imel wan ni tha khanakammakan tatsin than khrap

I'll report the result by email today if the committee decides in time. (formal-polite workplace plan, male speaker)

คุณเปลี่ยนวันรับสินค้าได้ค่ะ ถ้ายังไม่ได้ชำระเงิน

khun plian wan rap sinkha dai kha tha yang mai dai chamra ngoen

You can change the collection date if you have not paid yet. (ordinary-polite service explanation, female voice)

Initial conditions frame everything that follows and are especially useful in instructions. Final conditions narrow a prior assertion. ก็ is most natural when an initial condition needs a visible consequence correlate; it is normally absent before a trailing ถ้า clause because the consequence has already been stated.

Subject sharing, changes, and zero arguments

When one participant controls both events, Thai often states that participant only once. A zero subject after ถ้า is an ordinary discourse omission, not an infinitive.

ถ้ากลับถึงบ้านก่อน ผมจะเตรียมอาหารเย็นไว้ครับ

tha klap thueng ban kon phom cha triam ahan yen wai khrap

If I get home first, I'll have dinner ready. (ordinary-polite plan, male speaker; the lower subject is recovered as ผม)

When the actors differ, naming both prevents the first subject from being carried into the consequence.

ถ้าคุณเลิกงานก่อน ฉันจะไปรับลูกเองค่ะ

tha khun loek ngan kon chan cha pai rap luk eng kha

If you finish work first, I'll pick up our child myself. (ordinary-polite plan, female speaker; subjects differ)

Objects can be omitted on the same principle. ถ้าตรวจเสร็จแล้วก็ส่งมาได้ may omit who checks and what is sent if a live conversation has fixed both. In a regulation or a multi-party workflow, repeat the relevant role and document instead. See clause boundaries for participant tracking across longer sentences.

Conditions without overt ถ้า

Thai can express a conditional relation through balanced order and context alone. This is especially natural in compact generalizations, warnings, and paired negative formulas.

กดปุ่มนี้ ไฟก็จะดับครับ

kot pum ni fai ko cha dap khrap

Press this button and the light will go out. (ordinary-polite demonstration, male speaker; the first clause is interpreted conditionally)

ไม่ลองก็ไม่รู้ค่ะ

mai long ko mai ru kha

If you don't try, you won't know. (ordinary-polite maxim, female speaker; paired negative conditional)

อ่านเงื่อนไขให้ครบแล้วค่อยเซ็นนะครับ

an ngueankhai hai khrop laeo khoi sen na khrap

Read all the terms before you sign. (ordinary-polite instruction, male speaker; the first action is a prerequisite)

Omission is not a free operation that can be applied to every long conditional. In these examples, temporal order, imperative force, ก็, or the parallel ไม่...ก็ไม่... structure makes the dependency unmistakable. Restore ถ้า when the first clause might instead be read as an assertion or merely the first event in a sequence.

💡
A zero-marked condition needs structural support. Balanced negatives, a generic cause-and-effect relation, or a following ก็ can license it; a dense one-off plan usually benefits from overt ถ้า.

Real, habitual, and open readings

The same frame can describe a dependable pattern or an unsettled possibility. Predicate type, adverbs, and shared knowledge supply the distinction.

ถ้าอากาศชื้น กระดาษชนิดนี้จะงอง่ายค่ะ

tha akat chuen kradat chanit ni cha ngo ngai kha

If the air is humid, this kind of paper bends easily. (formal-polite general explanation, female voice)

ถ้าเย็นนี้ฝนไม่ตก เราจะเดินกลับโรงแรมครับ

tha yen ni fon mai tok rao cha doen klap rongraem khrap

If it doesn't rain this evening, we'll walk back to the hotel. (ordinary-polite open plan, male speaker)

The first relation is repeatable; the second remains open. Thai does not mark them through different present or future verb forms. Even จะ can describe programmed or regular consequences, so the larger context remains decisive. For modal placement inside either clause, use the conditional modality guide.

Formal หาก and explicit policies

หาก and หากว่า are (formal) alternatives to ถ้า, frequent in notices, contracts, official correspondence, and careful exposition. They do not create a special conditional mood.

หากพบข้อมูลไม่ถูกต้อง กรุณาแจ้งเจ้าหน้าที่ภายในเจ็ดวันค่ะ

hak phop khomun mai thuk tong karuna chaeng chao nathi phainai chet wan kha

If you find incorrect information, please notify an officer within seven days. (formal-polite written instruction, female voice)

Conversation normally prefers ถ้า. A customer-service agent may read หากพบข้อมูลไม่ถูกต้อง... from a policy but say ถ้าข้อมูลผิด แจ้งเราได้เลยค่ะ in a live exchange. This is a register choice, not diglossia.

An ordinary-polite planning dialogue

ถ้าร้านแรกไม่มีของ เราไปสาขาใกล้สถานีดีไหมคะ

tha ran raek mai mi khong rao pai sakha klai sathani di mai kha

If the first shop doesn't have it, shall we go to the branch near the station? (ordinary-polite question, female speaker)

ได้ครับ ถ้าไปตอนนี้ก็น่าจะถึงก่อนหกโมง

dai khrap tha pai ton ni ko na cha thueng kon hok mong

Sure. If we go now, we should probably arrive before six. (ordinary-polite reply, male speaker)

ถ้ารถติด ฉันจะโทรบอกทางร้านค่ะ

tha rot tit chan cha tho bok thang ran kha

If traffic is bad, I'll call the shop. (ordinary-polite plan, female speaker)

The first speaker states both consequence actors because the group goes but she asks the question. The final turn states ฉัน because the woman personally undertakes the call. Thai omission follows reference, not an automatic rule that both clauses must share a subject.

Common Mistakes

1. Adding an English dummy weather subject

❌ ถ้ามันฝนตก เราจะอยู่ข้างในค่ะ

Incorrect for neutral weather ‘if it rains’—ฝน is the weather noun, and Thai does not insert dummy มัน for English ‘it.’

✅ ถ้าฝนตก เราจะอยู่ข้างในค่ะ

tha fon tok rao cha yu khang nai kha

If it rains, we'll stay inside. (ordinary-polite plan, female speaker)

2. Putting ก็ between the consequence modal and predicate

❌ ถ้าฝนหยุด เราจะก็ออกเดินทางครับ

Incorrect order—conditional ก็ follows the consequence subject and precedes จะ.

✅ ถ้าฝนหยุด เราก็จะออกเดินทางครับ

tha fon yut rao ko cha ok doen thang khrap

If the rain stops, we'll set off. (ordinary-polite plan, male speaker)

3. Stacking alternative condition linkers

❌ ถ้าหากถ้าคุณว่าง ช่วยโทรกลับด้วยค่ะ

Incorrect—the condition is opened repeatedly; choose one frame.

✅ ถ้าคุณว่าง ช่วยโทรกลับด้วยค่ะ

tha khun wang chuai tho klap duai kha

If you're free, please call back. (ordinary-polite request, female speaker)

4. Copying an English tense sequence

❌ ถ้าเมื่อวานเขาได้จะมา เราก็พบเขาแล้วครับ

Incorrect—ได้จะ is not a Thai past-conditional verb form.

✅ ถ้าเขามาเมื่อวาน เราก็คงได้พบเขาแล้วครับ

tha khao ma muea wan rao ko khong dai phop khao laeo khrap

If he came yesterday, we probably met him. (ordinary-polite inference, male speaker)

💡
Do not begin by choosing an English conditional number. Decide whether P is a rule, an open possibility, or a discourse-implied prerequisite; then build P and Q with ordinary Thai predicates and add only the linkers and viewpoint markers the intended relation needs.

Key Takeaways

Use ถ้า P, (subject) ก็ Q for a visible condition–consequence structure. ก็ resumes an initial condition but is optional when the relation is already clear. Final ถ้า clauses narrow an assertion after it is presented, while zero-marked conditions depend on balanced form or strong context. Thai distinguishes real, habitual, and open readings through meaning, time, aspect, and discourse—not conjugation.
