Thai uses เพื่อ to present a goal and เพื่อให้ to introduce a desired situation, especially when that situation has its own subject. English often uses to, in order to, for, or so that, but none maps mechanically onto one Thai linker. The choice depends on who controls the intended event and whether the goal is packaged as an action, a beneficiary-oriented goal, or a full proposition.
A purpose is intended, not guaranteed. Thai purpose clauses do not conjugate for an infinitive, subjunctive, or future tense; order, omission, ให้, and context express the relationship.
Shared-subject purpose with เพื่อ
When the main action and the goal have the same understood actor, the most economical frame is subject + action + เพื่อ + goal predicate. The subject is normally stated once.
ผมแวะมาเพื่อคืนหนังสือครับ
phom wae ma phuea khuen nangsue khrap
I stopped by to return the book. (ordinary polite statement, male speaker)
ฉันปิดการแจ้งเตือนเพื่อทำงานให้เสร็จค่ะ
chan pit kan chaeng tuean phuea tham ngan hai set kha
I turned off notifications so I could finish my work. (ordinary polite explanation, female speaker)
ทีมเก็บข้อมูลเพิ่มเพื่อเปรียบเทียบผลในแต่ละพื้นที่
thim kep khomun phoem phuea priapthiap phon nai tae la phuen thi
The team collected more data in order to compare the results across areas. (academic or professional register)
The predicates after เพื่อ are not infinitives. Thai verbs do not acquire a special nonfinite form. The omitted actor is understood from the main clause, exactly as other recoverable arguments can be omitted.
เพื่อ can also precede a goal noun phrase: เพื่อความปลอดภัย “for safety,” เพื่อการศึกษา “for education.” This compact pattern is especially common in signs, policy language, and formal prose.
เพื่อความปลอดภัย กรุณาปิดประตูก่อนออกจากห้องค่ะ
phuea khwam plotphai karuna pit pratu kon ok chak hong kha
For safety, please close the door before leaving the room. (formal-polite instruction, female speaker)
A desired situation with เพื่อให้
Use เพื่อให้ + clause when the goal is a situation to be brought about. This is particularly clear when the subordinate actor differs from the main actor, but เพื่อให้ can also introduce a desired state with no animate actor.
ฉันส่งแผนที่มาเพื่อให้ทุกคนหาร้านเจอง่ายขึ้นค่ะ
chan song phaen thi ma phuea hai thuk khon ha ran choe ngai khuen kha
I sent a map so that everyone could find the restaurant more easily. (ordinary polite explanation, female speaker)
เราเปิดหน้าต่างไว้เพื่อให้อากาศถ่ายเทครับ
rao poet natang wai phuea hai akat thai the khrap
We left the window open so that air could circulate. (ordinary polite explanation, male speaker)
ทางร้านปรับทางเข้าเพื่อให้ลูกค้าที่ใช้รถเข็นเข้ามาได้สะดวกขึ้น
thang ran prap thang khao phuea hai luk kha thi chai rot khen khao ma dai saduak khuen
The shop modified the entrance so that customers using wheelchairs could enter more easily. (formal informational statement)
In the first and third examples, ทุกคน and ลูกค้า are overt subordinate subjects. In the air-circulation example, the desired state has อากาศ as its subject. Bare เพื่อ + predicate would encourage a shared-controller reading and can obscure who or what is supposed to realize the goal.
The ให้ here helps introduce the intended resulting situation. It is historically and synchronically related to broader ให้ constructions, but it should not be confused with every causative or benefactive use. Compare the dedicated ให้ causative guide and benefactive ให้ guide.
Productive slots and minimal contrasts
| Frame | Best suited to | Example core |
|---|---|---|
| subject + action + เพื่อ + predicate | same actor's intended action | มาเพื่อรับเอกสาร |
| action + เพื่อให้ + subject + predicate | different actor or desired situation | ส่งแผนที่เพื่อให้ทุกคนหาเจอ |
| เพื่อ + noun-like goal, directive/result | formal purpose framing | เพื่อความปลอดภัย กรุณารอ |
| action + จะได้ + predicate | conversational desired payoff | ออกเร็วหน่อย จะได้ไม่สาย |
ผมโทรมาเพื่อยืนยันเวลานัดครับ
phom tho ma phuea yuenyan wela nat khrap
I'm calling to confirm the appointment time. (ordinary polite statement, male speaker)
ผมส่งข้อความมาเพื่อให้คุณยืนยันเวลานัดครับ
phom song khokhwam ma phuea hai khun yuenyan wela nat khrap
I sent a message so that you could confirm the appointment time. (ordinary polite statement, male speaker)
The first has the speaker confirm; the second asks คุณ to confirm. English can use to confirm in both contexts and leave control implicit, but Thai เพื่อ versus เพื่อให้ + subject makes the participant structure transparent.
Clause order and discourse scope
Purpose phrases normally follow the action they motivate. Fronting is possible when the goal frames an instruction or institutional policy, particularly in formal writing.
บริษัทลดการใช้พลาสติกเพื่อประหยัดทรัพยากรและลดขยะ
borisat lot kan chai phlatsatik phuea prayat sapphayakon lae lot khaya
The company is reducing plastic use to conserve resources and reduce waste. (formal corporate statement)
เพื่อให้การประชุมเริ่มตรงเวลา ขอให้ทุกคนเข้าห้องก่อนเก้าโมงค่ะ
phuea hai kan prachum roem trong wela kho hai thuk khon khao hong kon kao mong kha
To ensure that the meeting starts on time, everyone is requested to enter the room before nine. (formal-polite announcement, female speaker)
Fronted เพื่อให้... scopes over the whole request. In conversation, putting a long purpose clause first can sound planned or official; a speaker usually states the action and then its goal.
Purpose can modify a noun phrase too, as in ห้องสำหรับประชุม “a room for meetings,” but สำหรับ classifies intended use or recipient rather than asserting someone's current intention. ผมมาที่ห้องนี้เพื่อประชุม explains why I came; ห้องนี้สำหรับประชุม describes what the room is for.
Purpose is not achieved result
Because a purpose is intentional, its goal may fail. A result clause instead presents a consequence as occurring. This yields a crucial contrast between เพื่อ(ให้) and เลย/จึง.
เธอออกจากบ้านแต่เช้าเพื่อให้ทันรถไฟ แต่สุดท้ายก็ไม่ทันค่ะ
thoe ok chak ban tae chao phuea hai than rot fai tae sut thai ko mai than kha
She left home early to catch the train, but in the end she missed it. (ordinary polite narrative, female speaker)
เธอออกจากบ้านช้า เลยไม่ทันรถไฟค่ะ
thoe ok chak ban cha loei mai than rot fai kha
She left home late, so she missed the train. (ordinary polite result report, female speaker)
The first remains coherent because เพื่อให้ทัน names an unrealized goal. The second uses เลย to assert an actual consequence. This distinction is semantic, not a difference between future and past morphology.
Spoken จะได้ as a desired payoff
In conversation, จะได้ + predicate often presents the useful payoff of a suggestion or prior action: “so that/then we can.” It is not interchangeable with เพื่อ in every formal purpose phrase, and จะได้ elsewhere can carry opportunity or resultant meanings.
ออกกันเร็วหน่อยนะคะ จะได้ไม่ต้องรีบระหว่างทาง
ok kan reo noi na kha cha dai mai tong rip rawang thang
Let's leave a little early so we won't have to rush on the way. (ordinary polite suggestion, female speaker)
ผมจะเขียนชื่อไว้ให้ จะได้ไม่หยิบผิดครับ
phom cha khian chue wai hai cha dai mai yip phit khrap
I'll write the name on it so that we don't pick up the wrong one. (ordinary polite offer, male speaker)
In careful prose, เพื่อไม่ให้หยิบผิด would state the preventive goal directly. The conversational จะได้ไม่... presents it as the beneficial payoff of the proposed action.
Negating the goal
Place ไม่ inside the purpose clause before the predicate. With เพื่อให้, preventive purpose commonly uses เพื่อไม่ให้ + subject + predicate. By contrast, negating the main action before เพื่อ denies that action and can leave the proposed purpose intact.
กรุณาเก็บยาไว้บนชั้นสูงเพื่อไม่ให้เด็กหยิบได้ค่ะ
karuna kep ya wai bon chan sung phuea mai hai dek yip dai kha
Please keep the medicine on a high shelf so that children cannot get it. (formal-polite safety instruction, female speaker)
ผมไม่ได้โทรมาเพื่อเร่งคุณนะครับ แค่อยากยืนยันว่าได้รับอีเมลแล้ว
phom mai dai tho ma phuea reng khun na khrap khae yak yuenyan wa dai rap imel laeo
I didn't call to rush you; I only wanted to confirm that you received the email. (ordinary polite clarification, male speaker)
The second sentence denies โทรมาเพื่อเร่งคุณ as the relevant intention. This scope cannot be reproduced by moving ไม่ into the purpose predicate.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
A visitor speaks with a receptionist.
วันนี้มาติดต่อเรื่องอะไรคะ
wan ni ma titto rueang arai kha
What are you here about today? (ordinary polite question, female receptionist)
ผมมาเพื่อรับเอกสารรับรองครับ
phom ma phuea rap ekkasan raprong khrap
I'm here to collect a certificate. (ordinary polite reply, male visitor)
ขอบัตรประชาชนด้วยค่ะ เพื่อให้เจ้าหน้าที่ตรวจชื่อได้ถูกต้อง
kho bat prachachon duai kha phuea hai chao nathi truat chue dai thuk tong
May I have your ID card as well, so the officer can verify the name correctly? (ordinary polite request, female receptionist)
The visitor's goal shares his subject, while the receptionist's purpose clause has เจ้าหน้าที่ as its own actor.
Common Mistakes
1. Omitting ให้ before a different purpose-clause subject
❌ ฉันเปิดประตูเพื่อแขกเข้ามาค่ะ
Unnatural neutral purpose structure—the guests are a distinct actor, so the desired situation needs เพื่อให้.
✅ ฉันเปิดประตูเพื่อให้แขกเข้ามาค่ะ
chan poet pratu phuea hai khaek khao ma kha
I opened the door so the guests could come in. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
2. Repeating a shared subject after เพื่อ
❌ ผมมาที่นี่เพื่อผมรับเอกสารครับ
Unnatural English-style repetition—the actor of receiving is already controlled by the main subject.
✅ ผมมาที่นี่เพื่อรับเอกสารครับ
phom ma thi ni phuea rap ekkasan khrap
I came here to collect the documents. (ordinary polite statement, male speaker)
3. Putting negation after ให้
❌ ติดราวไว้เพื่อให้ไม่เด็กตกค่ะ
Incorrect order—in a preventive purpose, ไม่ precedes ให้ and the subordinate subject.
✅ ติดราวไว้เพื่อไม่ให้เด็กตกค่ะ
tit rao wai phuea mai hai dek tok kha
Install a railing so that children do not fall. (ordinary safety recommendation, female speaker)
4. Using a purpose linker for an accidental consequence
❌ รถติดเพื่อให้ผมมาสายครับ
Wrong relation—traffic did not have the intention of making the speaker late.
✅ รถติดมาก ผมเลยมาสายครับ
rot tit mak phom loei ma sai khrap
Traffic was very bad, so I was late. (ordinary polite explanation, male speaker)
Key Takeaways
Use เพื่อ + predicate when the main actor controls the intended action, and เพื่อให้ + clause for a different actor or a desired resulting situation. Put ordinary purpose after the motivating action, front it mainly as a formal frame, place negation inside the purpose clause, and never confuse intention with an achieved consequence.
