Thai often connects a reason or prior situation to its consequence with จึง or เลย. จึง is neutral in careful exposition and especially common in formal writing; consequential เลย is the ordinary conversational choice, often expanded to ก็เลย. Both normally stand inside the result clause before its predicate.
They are discourse linkers, not equivalents of English tense or inflected “therefore” verbs. The cause may be explicitly introduced by เพราะ or เนื่องจาก, or it may simply be recoverable from the preceding clause or conversation.
Result-clause position
The productive order is cause/situation + (result subject) + จึง/เลย + result predicate. When cause and result share a recoverable subject, Thai may omit it in one or both clauses.
| Productive frame | Register | Discourse effect |
|---|---|---|
| cause, subject + จึง + result | neutral careful / formal | reasoned or documented consequence |
| cause, subject + เลย + result | ordinary conversational | direct practical consequence |
| cause, subject + ก็เลย + result | informal to ordinary speech | smooth narrative continuation, “so then” |
| condition + จึงจะ + result | careful / formal | only under that condition can the result hold |

The two data sets do not match, so the working group has requested further verification. (formal report)
เมื่อคืนข้างบ้านเสียงดังมาก ผมเลยนอนไม่ค่อยหลับครับ
muea khuen khang ban siang dang mak phom loei non mai khoi lap khrap
The neighbors were very noisy last night, so I didn't sleep very well. (ordinary polite explanation, male speaker)
ร้านประจำปิด เราก็เลยลองร้านใหม่กันค่ะ
ran pracham pit rao ko loei long ran mai kan kha
Our usual place was closed, so we tried a new restaurant. (ordinary polite narrative, female speaker)
The subject precedes the linker in all three result clauses. English speakers sometimes place “therefore” at a sentence edge; Thai จึง/เลย more closely scopes over the following predicate.
Choosing จึง or เลย
จึง presents the result as a reasoned consequence and fits reports, explanations, instructions, and formal prose. เลย makes the connection sound immediate and conversational. The truth conditions can be the same while the presentation changes.
เนื่องจากจำนวนผู้เข้าร่วมเกินกำหนด ผู้จัดจึงเพิ่มห้องประชุมอีกหนึ่งห้อง
nueang chak chamnuan phu khao ruam koen kamnot phu chat chueng phoem hong prachum ik nueng hong
Because attendance exceeded the limit, the organizers added another meeting room. (formal report)
คนมาเยอะกว่าที่คิด เขาเลยเปิดห้องเพิ่มอีกห้องค่ะ
khon ma yoe kwa thi khit khao loei poet hong phoem ik hong kha
More people came than expected, so they opened another room. (ordinary polite account, female speaker)
These sentences describe nearly the same response. Switching markers does not alter when it happened; it changes register and discourse stance. เลย also has immediate, emphatic, and “not at all” uses. Placement separates them: compare the full เลย guide.
In academic writing (academic), จึง can connect a stated premise to an inference. In everyday speech, the same inference often appears with เลย, ก็เลย, or no result linker at all.
Explicit and implicit causes
A result marker does not require เพราะ. Two adjacent propositions may establish the causal relation. When the relation is contestable or important, an explicit cause linker can make the reasoning easier to audit.
ฝนหยุดแล้ว เราเลยออกไปเดินเล่นค่ะ
fon yut laeo rao loei ok pai doen len kha
The rain stopped, so we went out for a walk. (ordinary polite narrative, female speaker)
เพราะพยานให้ข้อมูลไม่ตรงกัน ตำรวจจึงยังสรุปเหตุการณ์ไม่ได้
phro phayan hai khomun mai trong kan tamruat chueng yang sarup hetkan mai dai
Because the witnesses gave conflicting accounts, the police still cannot determine what happened. (formal news-style explanation)
แบตเตอรี่หมด โทรศัพท์เลยดับระหว่างทางครับ
baettoeri mot thorasap loei dap rawang thang khrap
The battery ran out, so the phone died on the way. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
The final example changes subjects: แบตเตอรี่ is the cause-clause subject and โทรศัพท์ is the result-clause subject. Naming both prevents the result from being misparsed. Where participants remain obvious, Thai can omit them without creating an English-style infinitive.
Negation and aspect inside the result
The linker comes before negation because negation belongs to the result predicate: จึงไม่อนุมัติ, เลยไม่ได้ไป, ก็เลยยังไม่ตอบ. English auxiliary order offers no reliable template.
เอกสารขาดลายเซ็น ผู้จัดการจึงไม่อนุมัติคำขอ
ekkasan khat lai sen phu chatkan chueng mai anumat kham kho
The document lacked a signature, so the manager did not approve the request. (formal administrative report)
ทางเดิมรถติดอยู่ เราเลยกำลังหาทางอื่นกันครับ
thang doem rot tit yu rao loei kamlang ha thang uen kan khrap
Our usual route is congested, so we're looking for another route. (ordinary polite live update, male speaker)
ฉันทำส่วนของตัวเองเสร็จแล้ว เลยส่งไฟล์ให้ทีมตรวจต่อค่ะ
chan tham suan khong tua eng set laeo loei song fai hai thim truat to kha
I finished my part, so I sent the file to the team for the next review. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
Here อยู่ profiles the continuing cause, กำลัง profiles the current result activity, and แล้ว marks attainment before the next step. None is selected by เลย itself. A consequence may be ongoing, negative, completed, habitual, or planned.
จึงจะ and a necessary condition
The sequence จึงจะ deserves special care. In a condition–result structure, it often means “only then will/can” rather than simple “therefore + future.” The first condition is presented as necessary for access to the result.
ต้องยืนยันอีเมลก่อน จึงจะเข้าสู่ระบบได้ครับ
tong yuenyan imel kon chueng cha khao su rabop dai khrap
You must confirm your email first; only then can you log in. (formal-polite instruction, male speaker)
เมื่อฟังความเห็นครบทุกฝ่ายแล้ว เราจึงจะตัดสินใจค่ะ
muea fang khwamhen khrop thuk fai laeo rao chueng cha tatsinchai kha
Only after hearing every side will we make a decision. (careful polite statement, female speaker)
In these examples จะ contributes prospectivity, while จึง links access to the result with the prior requirement. Removing จึง leaves a future plan; removing จะ can leave a more direct actual consequence. This is compositional scope, not a fused tense form.
Clause order and rhetorical force
Cause before result is the unmarked explanatory order with จึง/เลย. A speaker can announce the result first and add a เพราะ clause afterward, but then the result marker is often unnecessary: ผมกลับก่อน เพราะไม่สบาย. Beginning an isolated sentence with จึง is natural only when a cause or premise is already active in the preceding discourse.
This explains why written paragraphs often begin a later sentence with จึง: its cause is in the earlier sentence. The linker has cross-sentence reach, but its position inside the result clause remains the same.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
Two coworkers discuss a delayed presentation.
ทำไมวันนี้ยังซ้อมนำเสนอไม่ได้คะ
thammai wan ni yang som nam sanoe mai dai kha
Why can't we rehearse the presentation yet today? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
ห้องใหญ่มีคนใช้อยู่ เราเลยต้องรอถึงบ่ายสองครับ
hong yai mi khon chai yu rao loei tong ro thueng bai song khrap
Someone is using the large room, so we have to wait until two. (ordinary polite explanation, male speaker)
งั้นฉันจะตรวจสไลด์ให้ครบก่อน แล้วเราจึงค่อยซ้อมกันนะคะ
ngan chan cha truat salai hai khrop kon laeo rao chueng khoi som kan na kha
Then I'll finish checking the slides first, and only after that we'll rehearse. (careful ordinary-polite plan, female speaker)
The male speaker uses conversational เลย for an immediate inconvenience; the female speaker uses จึงค่อย to order a deliberate next step.
Common Mistakes
1. Putting the result linker after its predicate
❌ รถเสีย เรากลับบ้านช้าเลยครับ
Wrong for intended explicit ‘so’—final เลย sounds like immediacy or emphasis on being late rather than introducing the consequence.
✅ รถเสีย เราเลยกลับถึงบ้านช้าครับ
rot sia rao loei klap thueng ban cha khrap
The car broke down, so we got home late. (ordinary polite explanation, male speaker)
2. Moving negation before จึง
❌ เอกสารไม่ครบ เจ้าหน้าที่ไม่จึงรับเรื่องค่ะ
Incorrect order—จึง introduces the whole negative result predicate and comes before ไม่.
✅ เอกสารไม่ครบ เจ้าหน้าที่จึงยังไม่รับเรื่องค่ะ
ekkasan mai khrop chao nathi chueng yang mai rap rueang kha
The documents are incomplete, so the officer has not accepted the case yet. (formal-polite explanation, female speaker)
3. Treating จึงจะ as an ordinary future marker
❌ พรุ่งนี้ผมจึงจะไปซื้อของครับ
Unmotivated in isolation—จึง requires an active premise or necessary condition; it is not a decorative future auxiliary.
✅ พรุ่งนี้พอเงินเดือนออก ผมจึงจะไปซื้อของครับ
phrung ni pho ngoen duean ok phom chueng cha pai sue khong khrap
Tomorrow, once my salary comes in, only then will I go shopping. (careful polite statement, male speaker)
4. Putting เลย before a changed result-clause subject
❌ ฉันลืมกุญแจ เลยเพื่อนต้องรอค่ะ
Incorrect order—the changed result-clause subject เพื่อน must precede consequential เลย.
✅ ฉันลืมกุญแจ เพื่อนเลยต้องรอค่ะ
chan luem kunchae phuean loei tong ro kha
I forgot my keys, so my friend had to wait. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
Key Takeaways
Place จึง, เลย, or ก็เลย before the result predicate. Choose จึง for reasoned or formal presentation and เลย for conversational consequence; allow the cause to remain implicit only when discourse supports it. Negation and aspect stay inside the result predicate, while จึงจะ often marks access to a result under a necessary prior condition.
