Making Plans and Arranging Times

Thai planning conversations are built from a small set of productive frames: ว่างไหม “are you free?”, เจอกัน…ดีไหม “shall we meet…?”, สะดวก…ไหม “is…convenient?”, and ขอเลื่อนเป็น…ได้ไหม “could we move it to…?” Once the activity is understood, speakers usually discuss only the new time.

Thai verbs do not acquire future forms. A date, clock time, จะ, or the planning context can make a future interpretation clear. Polite particles and softeners manage the social request; they are not tense auxiliaries.

Opening a plan

An invitation can name an activity and then ask whether the other person wants or is able to join. ไหม asks for a yes–no response; ดีไหม asks whether the proposal seems good.

เย็นวันศุกร์ว่างไหมคะ

yen wan suk wang mai kha

Are you free Friday evening? (ordinary-polite availability question, female speaker; pronouns omitted)

เสาร์นี้ไปดูนิทรรศการกันไหมครับ

sao ni pai du nithatsakan kan mai khrap

Shall we go see the exhibition this Saturday? (ordinary-polite invitation, male speaker)

เจอกันหน้าร้านตอนหกโมงเย็นดีไหมคะ

choe kan na ran ton hok mong yen di mai kha

Shall we meet in front of the shop at six p.m.? (ordinary-polite proposal, female speaker)

The particle กัน presents the activity as shared. It does not mean English let us by itself, and it does not inflect the verb. In เจอกัน, reciprocity is lexical and natural: the participants meet each other.

💡
Check availability before imposing a plan: วันศุกร์ว่างไหมคะ opens the time slot; เจอกันหกโมงดีไหมคะ then proposes a value for it. Thai can omit “you” and “we” because the conversational roles remain clear.

เมื่อไร, วันไหน, and กี่โมง

Choose the question from the answer you need. เมื่อไร asks broadly “when?”, วันไหน asks for a day, and กี่โมง asks for a clock time.

เราไปกินข้าวกันเมื่อไรดีครับ

rao pai kin khao kan muearai di khrap

When should we go eat together? (ordinary-polite broad scheduling question, male speaker)

สัปดาห์หน้าคุณสะดวกวันไหนคะ

sapda na khun saduak wan nai kha

Which day works for you next week? (ordinary-polite day-selection question, female speaker)

ถ้านัดวันพุธ เจอกันกี่โมงดีครับ

tha nat wan phut choe kan ki mong di khrap

If we choose Wednesday, what time should we meet? (ordinary-polite clock-time question, male speaker)

English often uses when for all three. Thai can use เมื่อไร when context already narrows the answer to a clock time, but กี่โมง asks for that clock value directly. The time-question guide shows how the answer replaces the question word without auxiliary inversion.

The conversational clock system is genuinely irregular: บ่ายโมง is 1 p.m., บ่ายสองโมง is 2 p.m., and สองทุ่ม is 8 p.m. Review Thai clock time rather than calculating from English a.m./p.m. phrasing.

Accepting and confirming

A time can be accepted with ได้ครับ/ค่ะ, สะดวกครับ/ค่ะ, or enthusiastic ได้เลยครับ/ค่ะ. ตกลงตามนี้ is a clear confirmation, especially when several details have been negotiated.

บ่ายสองสะดวกครับ แล้วเจอกันที่สำนักงาน

bai song saduak khrap laeo choe kan thi samnakngan

Two p.m. works for me. See you at the office. (ordinary-polite acceptance, male speaker)

ได้เลยค่ะ เดี๋ยวฉันจองโต๊ะไว้ให้

dai loei kha diao chan chong to wai hai

Absolutely. I'll reserve a table for us. (ordinary-polite enthusiastic acceptance, female speaker)

ตกลงตามนี้ครับ วันอังคารสิบโมงที่ห้องประชุมเล็ก

toklong tam ni khrap wan angkhan sip mong thi hong prachum lek

Agreed, then: Tuesday at ten in the small meeting room. (ordinary-polite confirmation, male speaker)

เดี๋ยว in ordinary speech presents an action as the speaker's near next step; it is not a precise clock adverb. ไว้ in จองไว้ presents the reservation as arranged and held for the later occasion. English may use a future tense, but Thai packages commitment through the formula and context.

Declining without sounding abrupt

Bare ไม่ได้ can sound like a factual impossibility or a blunt rejection. In ordinary polite planning, give the unavailable time and offer an alternative: วันนั้นไม่สะดวก ขอเป็น…ได้ไหม.

วันพฤหัสบดีผมไม่สะดวกครับ ขอเป็นเช้าวันศุกร์ได้ไหมครับ

wan pharuehatsabodi phom mai saduak khrap kho pen chao wan suk dai mai khrap

Thursday doesn't work for me. Could we make it Friday morning? (ordinary-polite rescheduling request, male speaker)

ช่วงบ่ายฉันติดประชุมค่ะ หลังห้าโมงสะดวกไหมคะ

chuang bai chan tit prachum kha lang ha mong saduak mai kha

I'm tied up in a meeting during the afternoon. Would after five work? (ordinary-polite alternative, female speaker)

ขอโทษครับ พรุ่งนี้ไปไม่ได้จริง ๆ ไว้นัดกันสัปดาห์หน้านะครับ

kho thot khrap phrung ni pai mai dai ching ching wai nat kan sapda na na khrap

Sorry, I really can't go tomorrow. Let's arrange another time next week. (ordinary-polite decline, male speaker)

ขอเป็น… requests that the new choice be a time; ขอเลื่อนเป็น… explicitly requests moving an existing appointment. ไว้… postpones the shared activity to a later occasion, while นะครับ/นะคะ invites alignment and softens the close.

💡
A natural refusal usually contains three pieces: brief apology, unavailable frame, alternative. ขอโทษค่ะ วันนั้นไม่สะดวก ขอเป็นวันจันทร์ได้ไหมคะ is clearer and socially easier than isolated ไม่ได้ค่ะ.

Changing from one time to another

Use จาก + old time + เป็น + new time after a change predicate. The two times are not objects requiring articles.

ขอเลื่อนนัดจากเก้าโมงเป็นสิบโมงครึ่งได้ไหมคะ

kho luean nat chak kao mong pen sip mong khrueng dai mai kha

Could we move the appointment from nine to ten thirty? (ordinary-polite request, female speaker)

ประชุมเปลี่ยนจากวันจันทร์เป็นวันอังคารแล้วครับ

prachum plian chak wan chan pen wan angkhan laeo khrap

The meeting has now been moved from Monday to Tuesday. (ordinary-polite update, male speaker)

In the first, ขอ marks the speaker's request and final ได้ไหม asks whether it is possible or acceptable. In the second, sentence-final แล้ว signals that the revised schedule is now in force. Neither verb carries a past-tense ending.

An event count requires a classifier: ประชุมอีกครั้ง “meet one more time,” นัดสองครั้ง “two appointments/occasions.” Clock hours do not take a general classifier: say สิบโมง, not สิบโมงอัน.

Pronouns, particles, and register

Friends often say พรุ่งนี้ว่างปะ, เจอกันกี่โมง, or ไว้วันหลัง (informal). These are common but relationship-sensitive. With colleagues or unfamiliar people, keep ไหม, ครับ/ค่ะ/คะ, and a complete alternative.

Female statement ค่ะ appears in สะดวกค่ะ; female question คะ appears in สะดวกไหมคะ. Male speakers use ครับ for both. Pronouns can be omitted in a two-person exchange, but name participants if the plan involves someone else: คุณเมย์สะดวกวันไหนคะ.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

Two coworkers arrange a review meeting.

พรุ่งนี้บ่ายคุณว่างคุยเรื่องรายงานไหมคะ

phrung ni bai khun wang khui rueang raingan mai kha

Are you free tomorrow afternoon to discuss the report? (ordinary-polite question, female speaker)

บ่ายติดประชุมครับ แต่หลังสี่โมงว่าง

bai tit prachum khrap tae lang si mong wang

I'm in a meeting in the afternoon, but I'm free after four. (ordinary-polite reply, male speaker)

งั้นเจอกันสี่โมงครึ่งที่ร้านกาแฟข้างล่างดีไหมคะ

ngan choe kan si mong khrueng thi ran kafae khang lang di mai kha

Then shall we meet at 4:30 at the coffee shop downstairs? (ordinary-polite proposal, female speaker)

ได้ครับ เดี๋ยวผมส่งข้อความยืนยันอีกที

dai khrap diao phom song khokhwam yuenyan ik thi

That works. I'll send a confirmation message shortly. (ordinary-polite acceptance, male speaker)

Common Mistakes

1. Adding an English future auxiliary to the wrong position

❌ พรุ่งนี้จะเราเจอกันบ่ายสองค่ะ

Incorrect order—an overt subject precedes prospective จะ.

✅ พรุ่งนี้เราเจอกันบ่ายสองนะคะ

phrung ni rao choe kan bai song na kha

Let's meet tomorrow at two p.m. (ordinary-polite confirmation, female speaker; the date already supplies future time)

2. Copying English “at what time” word for word

❌ พรุ่งนี้ประชุมที่เวลาอะไรคะ

Unnatural English-like preposition and question frame—ask for a clock value directly with กี่โมง.

✅ พรุ่งนี้นัดคุยเรื่องงบประมาณกี่โมงคะ

phrung ni nat khui rueang ngoppraman ki mong kha

What time is tomorrow's discussion about the budget? (ordinary-polite clock-time question, female speaker)

3. Reversing the rescheduling frame

❌ ขอเลื่อนเป็นเก้าโมงจากสิบโมงครับ

Incorrect neutral order—the original time follows จาก and the replacement follows เป็น.

✅ ขอเลื่อนจากสิบโมงเป็นเก้าโมงครับ

kho luean chak sip mong pen kao mong khrap

I'd like to move it from ten to nine. (ordinary-polite request, male speaker)

4. Using female statement ค่ะ in a direct question

❌ เย็นนี้คุณสะดวกไหมค่ะ

Incorrect polite-particle form for a female speaker's direct question.

✅ เย็นนี้คุณสะดวกไหมคะ

yen ni khun saduak mai kha

Does this evening work for you? (ordinary-polite question, female speaker)

Key Takeaways

Check availability with ว่างไหม/สะดวกไหม, propose with เจอกัน…ดีไหม, and confirm with ได้, ตกลงตามนี้, or แล้วเจอกัน. Ask วันไหน for a day and กี่โมง for a clock time. Reschedule with ขอเลื่อนจาก A เป็น B ได้ไหม, and let dates, context, and optional จะ—not verb conjugation—locate the plan in the future.
