Confirmation Questions with ใช่ไหม

ใช่ไหม asks the listener to confirm a proposition that the speaker considers likely, remembered, inferred, or just heard. คุณเป็นคนจองโต๊ะใช่ไหมคะ means “You are the person who reserved the table, right?” The speaker presents “you reserved it” and asks whether that understanding is correct.

This differs from neutral ไหม. Both appear after an unchanged Thai proposition, but ใช่ไหม carries a prior leaning toward that proposition. English spreads similar meanings across right?, isn't it?, didn't you?, and many other tags. Thai does not copy the English auxiliary or change ใช่ไหม for tense or subject.

Present a proposition, then request confirmation

Place ใช่ไหม after the full proposition and before polite ครับ/คะ. The proposition may describe identity, an action, a property, a time, or a completed event.

คุณเป็นคนจองโต๊ะใช่ไหมคะ

khun pen khon chong to chai mai kha

You are the person who reserved the table, right? (polite confirmation question, female speaker)

ใช่ครับ จองไว้สำหรับสี่คน

chai khrap chong wai samrap si khon

Yes. I reserved it for four people. (ordinary polite confirmation, male speaker)

ประชุมเลื่อนไปบ่ายสามใช่ไหมครับ

prachum luean pai bai sam chai mai khrap

The meeting was moved to three p.m., right? (polite confirmation question, male speaker)

ไม่ใช่ค่ะ เลื่อนไปบ่ายสอง

mai chai kha luean pai bai song

No. It was moved to two p.m. (ordinary polite correction, female speaker)

The verb เลื่อน does not become a past form. The context says that a change was announced, and ใช่ไหม checks the remembered new time. With a future plan, the same fixed ending appears: พรุ่งนี้เจอกันบ่ายสองใช่ไหมครับ “We're meeting at two tomorrow, right?”

💡
Use ใช่ไหม when you could naturally introduce the thought with “I understand that…” or “As I remember it…”. If you genuinely have no leaning, use neutral ไหม or หรือเปล่า.

The contrast with ไหม and หรือเปล่า

The three endings can question the same basic proposition while organizing the conversation differently.

QuestionDiscourse jobNatural English cue
ร้านเปิดไหมopen request for positive or negative informationIs the shop open?
ร้านเปิดหรือเปล่าexplicitly checks whether the proposition holds or notIs the shop open or not?
ร้านเปิดใช่ไหมasks the listener to validate an expectationThe shop is open, right?

ร้านเปิดถึงสามทุ่มไหมคะ

ran poet thueng sam thum mai kha

Is the shop open until nine p.m.? (neutral polite information question, female speaker)

ร้านเปิดถึงสามทุ่มใช่ไหมคะ

ran poet thueng sam thum chai mai kha

The shop is open until nine p.m., right? (polite confirmation question, female speaker)

Neither question is more polite merely because it is longer. The first lacks a grammatical commitment to either answer. The second signals that “open until nine” is already in the speaker's working understanding.

ใช่ไหม is standard neutral spelling. ใช่มั้ย is common in (informal) messages and quoted casual dialogue. More reduced spellings such as ใช่มะ are strongly (informal) and socially marked; recognize them, but do not use them as the default written form.

Positive, negative, and corrective answers

Because the construction explicitly asks whether the proposed understanding is ใช่ “correct,” ใช่ครับ/ค่ะ and ไม่ใช่ครับ/ค่ะ are natural whole-proposition answers. A speaker can also repeat the focused information or give a replacement.

คุณไม่กินหมูใช่ไหมคะ

khun mai kin mu chai mai kha

You don't eat pork, right? (polite confirmation of a negative proposition, female speaker)

ใช่ครับ ผมไม่กินหมู

chai khrap phom mai kin mu

That's right. I don't eat pork. (ordinary polite confirmation, male speaker)

The answer ใช่ confirms the entire negative proposition คุณไม่กินหมู. It does not mean that the embedded action “eat pork” is positive. This is one reason English speakers can become confused by negative confirmation questions: Thai ใช่ validates what was proposed, whether that proposal contains ไม่ or not.

ช่างซ่อมเครื่องเสร็จแล้วใช่ไหมครับ

chang som khrueang set laeo chai mai khrap

The technician has finished repairing the machine, right? (polite confirmation question, male speaker)

ยังค่ะ ต้องเปลี่ยนอะไหล่อีกชิ้น

yang kha tong plian alai ik chin

Not yet. One more part has to be replaced. (ordinary polite correction, female speaker)

Here ยัง rejects the claimed completion more helpfully than a bare ไม่ใช่. Answer choice follows what needs correction, not an English requirement to begin every answer with yes or no.

Negation belongs inside the proposition

The location of ไม่ changes which proposition receives confirmation. Compare ไม่ได้ส่ง “did not send” with ส่งไม่ได้ “cannot send.”

คุณไม่ได้ส่งไฟล์นี้ใช่ไหมคะ

khun mai dai song fai ni chai mai kha

You didn't send this file, right? (polite confirmation of non-occurrence, female speaker)

ตอนนี้คุณส่งไฟล์นี้ไม่ได้ใช่ไหมคะ

ton ni khun song fai ni mai dai chai mai kha

You can't send this file right now, correct? (polite confirmation of inability, female speaker)

English may use didn't in the first and can't in the second. Thai does not rearrange either auxiliary to form the question. It builds the intended positive or negative proposition and places fixed ใช่ไหม after it. The negative identity page explains lexical ไม่ใช่ when the proposition itself rejects an identity.

💡
Do not treat ใช่ไหม as two words that must match the main verb. It is a fixed confirmation frame outside the proposition; any ไม่, ได้, จะ, or แล้ว stays where its own scope requires.

Confirmation and hearing repair

The prior belief may come from memory, visual evidence, or the immediately preceding words. In a noisy place, repeating the uncertain piece with ใช่ไหม asks the other person to repair or confirm it.

เมื่อกี้บอกว่าประตูฝั่งซ้ายใช่ไหมคะ

muea ki bok wa pratu fang sai chai mai kha

You said the door on the left just now, right? (polite hearing-repair question, female speaker)

ใช่ครับ เข้าทางประตูฝั่งซ้าย

chai khrap khao thang pratu fang sai

Yes. Enter through the door on the left. (ordinary polite confirmation, male speaker)

The subject of บอก is omitted because the current speaker is checking the addressee's words. Thai does not require an overt you, and ใช่ไหม does not supply one.

The proposition itself may be reduced when its topic is visible or was just mentioned. At a hotel desk, สองคืนใช่ไหมคะ asks “Two nights, right?” after the reservation is already active. This is not a separate fragment grammar: สองคืน is the focused value left overt, while the reservation and guest are recoverable.

สองคืนใช่ไหมคะ

song khuen chai mai kha

Two nights, right? (polite confirmation of a visible reservation, female speaker)

สามคืนครับ ผมจะออกเช้าวันจันทร์

sam khuen khrap phom cha ok chao wan chan

Three nights. I'll leave Monday morning. (ordinary polite correction, male speaker)

An English speaker may feel obliged to reconstruct “You are staying for three nights.” Thai can correct only the disputed value because the rest is already shared. If the reservation is not active in the discourse, restore a fuller proposition: คุณจองไว้สามคืนใช่ไหมคะ.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

Two colleagues confirm travel details.

พรุ่งนี้เรานัดกันที่สถานีใช่ไหมคะ

phrung ni rao nat kan thi sathani chai mai kha

We're meeting at the station tomorrow, right? (polite confirmation question, female speaker)

ใช่ครับ เจอกันหน้าทางเข้าตอนเจ็ดโมง

chai khrap choe kan na thang khao ton chet mong

Yes. We'll meet in front of the entrance at seven. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)

ต้องซื้อตั๋วก่อนขึ้นรถใช่ไหมคะ

tong sue tua kon khuen rot chai mai kha

We need to buy tickets before boarding, right? (polite confirmation question, female speaker)

ไม่ต้องครับ ผมซื้อไว้แล้ว

mai tong khrap phom sue wai laeo

No need. I've already bought them. (ordinary polite correction, male speaker)

The final reply corrects the necessity itself with ไม่ต้อง, which is clearer than merely saying ไม่ใช่.

Common Mistakes

1. Putting ใช่ไหม at the front

❌ ใช่ไหมคุณนิดเป็นคนส่งเอกสารคะ

Incorrect English-style placement—ใช่ไหม follows the proposition being checked.

✅ คุณนิดเป็นคนส่งเอกสารใช่ไหมคะ

khun nit pen khon song ekkasan chai mai kha

Khun Nit is the person sending the documents, right? (polite confirmation question, female speaker)

2. Using a confirmation frame for a completely open choice

❌ คุณแพ้นมใช่ไหมครับ

Wrong for the intended neutral medical question—ใช่ไหม presents an existing expectation that the listener is allergic.

✅ คุณแพ้นมหรือเปล่าครับ

khun phae nom rue plao khrap

Are you allergic to milk? (neutral polite information question, male speaker)

3. Misplacing negation and changing the proposition

❌ เมื่อวานคุณส่งรายงานไม่ได้ใช่ไหมคะ

Wrong for ‘you did not send it’—ส่งไม่ได้ says that sending was impossible.

✅ เมื่อวานคุณไม่ได้ส่งรายงานใช่ไหมคะ

muea wan khun mai dai song raingan chai mai kha

You didn't send the report yesterday, right? (polite confirmation of non-occurrence, female speaker)

4. Using female statement ค่ะ after a question

❌ ห้องอาหารอยู่ชั้นสองใช่ไหมค่ะ

Incorrect standard polite-particle choice—a female confirmation question takes คะ.

✅ ห้องอาหารอยู่ชั้นสองใช่ไหมคะ

hong ahan yu chan song chai mai kha

The dining room is on the second floor, right? (polite confirmation question, female speaker)

Key Takeaways

Use ใช่ไหม after a complete proposition when you want validation of an expectation, memory, or inference. Keep time, aspect, modality, and negation inside that proposition; put ครับ/คะ after the confirmation frame; and correct the specific disputed information rather than mechanically translating English yes or no.
