Colloquial มั้ย and Standard ไหม

ไหม and มั้ย represent two pronunciations and writing choices for the ordinary yes–no question particle. Use ไหม in standard writing and careful neutral speech. มั้ย is a widespread (informal) spelling that reflects a common conversational pronunciation; it belongs naturally in texts, chat, and quoted dialogue. The choice changes register, not sentence structure.

Both forms follow the proposition being questioned. Thai keeps statement order, then adds the question particle, then any polite ครับ or question-form คะ. English changes you are free into are you free? and adds do in do you want it? Thai does neither.

One particle, two written forms

The standard spelling ไหม and colloquial มั้ย are not two different question constructions. Compare the same invitation in two settings:

เย็นนี้ว่างไหมคะ

yen ni wang mai kha

Are you free this evening? (standard spelling, ordinary polite question, female speaker)

เย็นนี้ว่างมั้ย

yen ni wang mai

Free this evening? (informal text or casual speech)

In careful standard pronunciation, ไหม has the tone associated with its standard spelling. The spelling มั้ย records the high-tone conversational form heard very widely in Central Thai. RTGS does not show tones, so both appear as mai in the romanization line. That loss of information is a limitation of RTGS, not evidence that the Thai spellings are interchangeable in every document.

ไหมครับordinary polite question by a male speakerรับบัตรไหมครับ
ไหมคะordinary polite question by a female speakerรับบัตรไหมคะ
มั้ยครับ / มั้ยคะinformal spelling plus polite social stanceส่งวันนี้มั้ยครับ

Informal spelling is not the same thing as impoliteness. A woman can text สะดวกคุยมั้ยคะ to a colleague: มั้ย makes the orthography conversational, while คะ still makes the turn polite.

💡
Write ไหม by default. Choose มั้ย only when you deliberately want the page to sound like casual speech or messaging; do not let an informal spelling wander into an application, report, or formal email.

Keep the proposition intact

Build the statement first and place ไหม/มั้ย after everything inside its scope: verb, object, location, complement, aspect, or modal. The subject may be omitted when the listener is obvious, but it is not inverted.

ร้านนี้รับบัตรไหมคะ

ran ni rap bat mai kha

Does this shop accept cards? (standard spelling, polite information question, female speaker)

ส่งรูปให้ดูหน่อยได้มั้ย

song rup hai du noi dai mai

Can you send me a photo to look at? (informal message; subject omitted)

พรุ่งนี้จะไปดูห้องด้วยกันมั้ยครับ

phrung ni cha pai du hong duai kan mai khrap

Shall we go look at the room together tomorrow? (informal wording with male politeness)

The future-oriented จะ, permission or possibility ได้, and object รูป all stay before the question particle. ไหม does not mean do, is, will, or can. It simply asks the listener to decide whether the whole preceding proposition holds.

The form also follows aspectual material:

อ่านรายงานจบแล้วไหมครับ

an raingan chop laeo mai khrap

Have you finished reading the report? (standard spelling, polite question, male speaker)

Here จบแล้ว presents the endpoint as potentially reached. ไหม questions that complete proposition; it is not a past-tense ending. For the basic structure, see yes–no questions with ไหม.

Spelling does not change time or commitment

Neither form carries tense. A time phrase or aspect expression locates the event, while the particle only makes the proposition polar. เมื่อวานส่งไหม asks about yesterday, พรุ่งนี้จะส่งไหม asks about a later plan, and กำลังส่งอยู่ไหม asks whether sending is in progress. Replacing the final spelling with มั้ย makes any of those examples look more conversational; it does not make the event more immediate or the speaker less certain.

ตอนนี้กำลังรอรถอยู่มั้ย

ton ni kamlang ro rot yu mai

Are you waiting for the bus right now? (informal message; progressive event)

เมื่อวานเขาโทรกลับไหมคะ

muea wan khao tho klap mai kha

Did he call back yesterday? (standard spelling, polite past-time question, female speaker)

พรุ่งนี้เขาจะโทรกลับมั้ย

phrung ni khao cha tho klap mai

Will he call back tomorrow? (informal message; prospective event)

The time expressions เมื่อวาน and พรุ่งนี้, plus prospective จะ, establish the temporal readings. The choice between ไหม and มั้ย does not. This is why neither spelling can be translated as an English tense auxiliary.

💡
Use the “statement first” test: if พรุ่งนี้จะส่งเอกสาร is a possible statement, พรุ่งนี้จะส่งเอกสารไหมคะ is its question. Nothing moves to the front.

Answer with the predicate that was questioned

Thai usually answers a polar question by repeating the relevant predicate or modal. There is no universal word that must translate English yes in every exchange.

มีโต๊ะข้างนอกไหมครับ

mi to khang nok mai khrap

Are there any tables outside? (standard spelling, polite question, male speaker)

มีค่ะ แต่ตอนนี้เหลือโต๊ะเดียว

mi kha tae ton ni luea to diao

Yes, but only one table is left now. (ordinary polite answer, female speaker)

คืนนี้มาด้วยกันมั้ย

khuen ni ma duai kan mai

Are you coming along tonight? (informal invitation)

ไม่มาค่ะ พรุ่งนี้ต้องตื่นเช้า

mai ma kha phrung ni tong tuen chao

No, I'm not. I have to get up early tomorrow. (ordinary polite answer, female speaker)

For มีไหม, answer มี/ไม่มี; for มาไหม, answer มา/ไม่มา; for ได้ไหม, answer ได้/ไม่ได้. ใช่/ไม่ใช่ is appropriate when confirming or rejecting an identity or a proposition explicitly framed with ใช่ไหม, but it should not replace every predicate-specific answer.

Information, repair, and a change in question type

Plain ไหม/มั้ย most often asks an open yes–no question. It can also be used when checking whether something was heard or understood, provided the preceding words state what is being checked.

เมื่อกี้บอกว่าส่งวันศุกร์ใช่ไหมคะ

muea ki bok wa song wan suk chai mai kha

You said just now that it would be sent on Friday, right? (polite repair check, female speaker; confirmation uses ใช่ไหม)

Notice that a confirmation check commonly chooses ใช่ไหม, not merely a casual spelling of ไหม. Register and question type are separate decisions: มั้ย changes how informal the writing looks, while ใช่ไหม changes an open question into a request for confirmation.

A content question already contains an interrogative such as อะไร “what” or ไหน “where/which.” Adding ไหม can change it into an indefinite polar question instead of strengthening the original question:

คุณซื้ออะไรคะ

khun sue arai kha

What did you buy? (open content question, polite, female speaker)

คุณซื้ออะไรไหมคะ

khun sue arai mai kha

Did you buy anything? (polar question; อะไร has an indefinite reading)

This difference is genuinely difficult because English uses what and anything as separate forms. Thai lets the construction and discourse determine the reading. Do not add ไหม mechanically after every sentence that English punctuates with a question mark.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

Two coworkers exchange messages about a meeting.

พรุ่งนี้สะดวกคุยตอนสิบโมงไหมคะ

phrung ni saduak khui ton sip mong mai kha

Are you free to talk at ten tomorrow? (standard spelling, polite question, female speaker)

สะดวกครับ ประชุมออนไลน์ได้มั้ยครับ

saduak khrap prachum onlai dai mai khrap

Yes. Can we meet online? (informal spelling in a polite message, male speaker)

ได้ค่ะ เดี๋ยวส่งลิงก์ให้นะคะ

dai kha diao song ling hai na kha

Sure. I'll send you the link. (ordinary polite reply, female speaker)

ขอบคุณครับ ต้องเตรียมเอกสารอะไรไหมครับ

khop khun khrap tong triam ekkasan arai mai khrap

Thank you. Do I need to prepare any documents? (polite polar question, male speaker; อะไร means ‘any’)

The conversation can mix ไหม and มั้ย because real messaging varies in spelling. That does not create a grammatical contrast between the two questions.

Common Mistakes

1. Confusing question มั้ย with negator ไม่

❌ วันนี้ฉันมั้ยว่างค่ะ

Incorrect—the question particle มั้ย cannot replace the preverbal negator ไม่.

✅ วันนี้ฉันไม่ว่างค่ะ

wan ni chan mai wang kha

I'm not free today. (ordinary polite statement, female speaker; ไม่ negates ว่าง)

2. Moving the particle before the predicate

❌ คุณมั้ยจะไปตลาดเย็นนี้

Incorrect order—มั้ย does not move to an English-style auxiliary position.

✅ คุณจะไปตลาดเย็นนี้ไหมคะ

khun cha pai talat yen ni mai kha

Are you going to the market this evening? (standard polite question, female speaker)

3. Using statement ค่ะ after a female question

❌ แวะรับฉันได้มั้ยค่ะ

Incorrect standard polite-particle choice—a female question ends in คะ, not statement ค่ะ.

✅ แวะรับฉันได้มั้ยคะ

wae rap chan dai mai kha

Could you stop and pick me up? (informal written question with female politeness)

4. Answering every action question with ใช่

❌ เสาร์นี้ไปทะเลมั้ยครับ — ใช่ค่ะ

Unnatural predicate choice for the intended answer—repeat ไป rather than forcing a universal ‘yes.’

✅ เสาร์นี้ไปทะเลมั้ยครับ — ไปค่ะ

sao ni pai thale mai khrap pai kha

Are you going to the beach this Saturday? — Yes. (informal question and natural predicate-repetition answer)

Key Takeaways

Use ไหม as the default standard spelling and มั้ย as a deliberate informal spelling. In both cases, keep ordinary Thai order, place the question particle after the full proposition and before ครับ/คะ, and answer with the predicate or modal that the question makes relevant.
