หรือเปล่า turns a complete proposition into a yes–no question by placing an explicit “or not?” choice after it. รถไฟขบวนนี้จอดที่อยุธยา states that this train stops at Ayutthaya; รถไฟขบวนนี้จอดที่อยุธยาหรือเปล่าครับ asks whether that proposition is true or not. The statement order remains unchanged.
This construction is neutral and common in standard Central Thai. It can sound slightly more explicit than ไหม, because its history and visible form present the positive proposition against the alternative เปล่า. That does not mean it automatically expects “no.” Context, not the particle alone, supplies any expectation.
Proposition + หรือเปล่า
Place หรือเปล่า after the whole material being tested and before polite ครับ/คะ. Time words, objects, locations, aspect, and modal expressions remain inside the proposition.
| Meaning tested | Productive frame | Natural answer pair |
|---|---|---|
rot fai khabuan ni chot thi ayutthaya rue plao khrap
Does this train stop at Ayutthaya? (polite information question, male speaker)
จอดค่ะ แต่จอดแค่สองนาที
chot kha tae chot khae song nathi
Yes, but it stops for only two minutes. (ordinary polite answer, female speaker)
ห้องนี้มีหน้าต่างหรือเปล่าคะ
hong ni mi natang rue plao kha
Does this room have a window? (polite information question, female speaker)
ไม่มีครับ แต่มีประตูกระจก
mai mi khrap tae mi pratu krachok
No, but it has a glass door. (ordinary polite answer, male speaker)
English may front does, is, or has. Thai uses none of those operations here. หรือเปล่า scopes over the proposition to its left, and the lexical predicate supplies the answer.
หรือเปล่า and ไหม: both open, not identical in shape
In many everyday questions, ไหม and หรือเปล่า can ask for the same practical information. ไหม is a compact polar particle; หรือเปล่า displays the alternative “or not” more transparently.
คุณจะต่อสัญญาไหมคะ
khun cha to sanya mai kha
Will you renew the contract? (neutral polite question with ไหม, female speaker)
คุณจะต่อสัญญาหรือเปล่าคะ
khun cha to sanya rue plao kha
Are you going to renew the contract or not? (neutral but more explicit polite question, female speaker)
The English translation “or not?” can sound impatient. Thai หรือเปล่า is not inherently confrontational; tone, situation, and added wording determine pressure. In formal administrative prose (formal), หรือไม่ is often preferred to conversational หรือเปล่า. In fast casual speech (informal), speakers may reduce หรือ or the whole ending, but learners should keep the clear standard form หรือเปล่า until they can hear those reductions reliably.
Do not stack the two endings. ไหม and หรือเปล่า normally compete for the same clause-final polar-question slot. Pick one based on register and discourse effect.
Omission is possible, but the scope must remain recoverable
Thai can omit a subject, object, or both when the situation identifies them. The question ending then follows what remains of the proposition. At a repair shop, ซ่อมได้หรือเปล่าครับ naturally means “Can it be repaired?” because the damaged item is already on the counter. Without that shared object, the same words leave the listener to guess what is repairable.
วันนี้ซ่อมเสร็จหรือเปล่าคะ
wan ni som set rue plao kha
Will the repair be finished today? (polite question, female speaker; item is recoverable from the situation)
เสร็จครับ มารับได้ตอนหกโมง
set khrap ma rap dai ton hok mong
Yes. You can pick it up at six. (ordinary polite answer, male speaker; item remains omitted)
Omission does not move หรือเปล่า inward. The ending still scopes over the complete recoverable proposition. If several objects or people are active, say them overtly so that the listener does not have to choose among competing interpretations.
Answers: repeat, deny, or correct
The positive answer usually repeats the main predicate. The negative answer often uses ไม่ + predicate, ไม่มี, or ไม่ใช่, according to predicate type. Bare เปล่า is also a natural conversational denial when it rejects the assumption currently under discussion.
คุณแพ้อาหารทะเลหรือเปล่าคะ
khun phae ahan thale rue plao kha
Are you allergic to seafood? (polite information question, female speaker)
แพ้ครับ โดยเฉพาะกุ้ง
phae khrap doi chapho kung
Yes, especially shrimp. (ordinary polite answer, male speaker)
เมื่อคืนฝนตกแถวบ้านคุณหรือเปล่าครับ
muea khuen fon tok thaeo ban khun rue plao khrap
Did it rain around your home last night? (polite information question, male speaker)
เปล่าค่ะ แถวบ้านฉันไม่มีฝนเลย
plao kha thaeo ban chan mai mi fon loei
No. There was no rain at all around my home. (ordinary polite denial, female speaker)
เปล่า is useful because it denies the active supposition without repeating a long predicate. It is not, however, a context-free replacement for every Thai negative. ผมไม่กินเนื้อ is the neutral statement “I do not eat meat”; ผมเปล่ากินเนื้อ would be a marked denial in a specific conversational setting. See เปล่า in denial.
Information seeking, confirmation, and repair
An out-of-the-blue หรือเปล่า question can seek new information. With a proposition just heard, it can instead check or repair the record.
เมื่อกี้คุณบอกว่าร้านรับเฉพาะเงินสดหรือเปล่าครับ
muea ki khun bok wa ran rap chapho ngoen sot rue plao khrap
Did you just say that the shop accepts only cash? (polite hearing-repair question, male speaker)
เปล่าค่ะ ฉันบอกว่าร้านไม่รับเงินสด
plao kha chan bok wa ran mai rap ngoen sot
No. I said the shop doesn't accept cash. (ordinary polite correction, female speaker)
For a proposition the speaker already leans toward, ใช่ไหม makes the confirmation bias clearer: “that is right, isn't it?” หรือเปล่า itself is compatible with genuine uncertainty. This is a discourse distinction, not a tense distinction and not a difference in who the subject is.
Not every หรือ introduces an “or not?” question
Full หรือเปล่า asks whether one proposition holds. Plain หรือ can link two named alternatives. Compare:
คุณจะนั่งรถไฟหรือรถตู้คะ
khun cha nang rot fai rue rot tu kha
Will you take the train or the van? (polite alternative question, female speaker; two choices are named)
คุณจะนั่งรถไฟหรือเปล่าคะ
khun cha nang rot fai rue plao kha
Will you take the train or not? (polite polar question, female speaker)
The first answer names one option: รถตู้ค่ะ. The second answer confirms or rejects taking the train: นั่งค่ะ or ไม่นั่งค่ะ. English uses or in both, but Thai construction and answer shape distinguish them.
Likewise, หรือยัง asks whether an expected stage has been reached “yet,” whereas หรือเปล่า asks more generally whether a proposition holds:
รายงานผ่านการตรวจหรือเปล่าครับ
raingan phan kan truat rue plao khrap
Did the report pass the review? (polite truth-value question, male speaker)
ตรวจรายงานเสร็จหรือยังคะ
truat raingan set rue yang kha
Have you finished reviewing the report yet? (polite stage-of-completion question, female speaker)
Ordinary-polite dialogue
A customer asks about a delivery.
วันนี้ร้านส่งของถึงบ้านหรือเปล่าคะ
wan ni ran song khong thueng ban rue plao kha
Does the shop deliver to homes today? (polite information question, female speaker)
ส่งครับ แต่ต้องสั่งก่อนห้าโมง
song khrap tae tong sang kon ha mong
Yes, but you need to order before five. (ordinary polite answer, male speaker)
มีค่าจัดส่งเพิ่มหรือเปล่าคะ
mi kha chat song phoem rue plao kha
Is there an additional delivery fee? (polite information question, female speaker)
ไม่มีครับ ถ้ายอดเกินห้าร้อยบาท
mai mi khrap tha yot koen ha roi baht
No, not if the total is over five hundred baht. (ordinary polite answer, male speaker)
The speakers omit recoverable subjects, but the question ending remains after the full proposition and before the polite particle.
Common Mistakes
1. Fronting the question ending
❌ หรือเปล่าคุณจองห้องไว้คะ
Incorrect English-style placement—หรือเปล่า follows the proposition.
✅ คุณจองห้องไว้หรือเปล่าคะ
khun chong hong wai rue plao kha
Did you reserve a room? (polite question, female speaker)
2. Stacking ไหม and หรือเปล่า
❌ เขาจะมารับไหมหรือเปล่าครับ
Incorrect neutral stacking—both endings try to form the same polar question.
✅ เขาจะมารับหรือเปล่าครับ
khao cha ma rap rue plao khrap
Will he come pick us up? (polite question, male speaker)
3. Putting statement ค่ะ after a female question
❌ ที่นั่งตรงนี้ว่างหรือเปล่าค่ะ
Incorrect standard polite-particle choice—a female question takes คะ.
✅ ที่นั่งริมหน้าต่างว่างหรือเปล่าคะ
thi nang rim natang wang rue plao kha
Is the window seat free? (polite question, female speaker)
4. Using a negative proposition for a neutral open question
❌ พรุ่งนี้คุณไม่เข้าประชุมหรือเปล่าคะ
Wrong for neutral ‘Will you attend?’—this asks whether the negative proposition ‘you will not attend’ is true.
✅ พรุ่งนี้คุณเข้าประชุมหรือเปล่าคะ
phrung ni khun khao prachum rue plao kha
Will you attend the meeting tomorrow? (neutral polite information question, female speaker)
Key Takeaways
Keep the proposition intact, add หรือเปล่า, then add ครับ/คะ. Treat it as a neutral, explicit “whether or not” question—not an automatically impatient or negative-biased form. Answer with the relevant predicate or use เปล่า when the rejected assumption is recoverable.
