Thai เปล่า has two broad polarity environments. In a reply, it rejects an assumption: เปล่าครับ “No, that isn't the case.” In a marked conversational pattern it can also precede a predicate while rejecting an accusation or teasing assumption. In proposition + หรือเปล่า, it supplies the negative alternative “or not” and turns the proposition into a polar question.
เปล่า is not the ordinary preverbal negator. A neutral full negative statement still uses ไม่, ไม่ได้, ไม่ใช่, or another predicate-appropriate form. Whether it stands alone or occurs in the marked preverbal pattern, denial เปล่า depends on a preceding question, accusation, or assumption rather than negating an out-of-the-blue clause.
For the aspect contributed by แล้ว inside a question, see perfective แล้ว.
หรือเปล่า follows a complete proposition
The core question pattern is proposition + หรือเปล่า. Thai keeps ordinary statement order and adds the alternative at the end.
คุณเป็นเจ้าของรถคันนี้หรือเปล่าคะ
khun pen chao khong rot khan ni rue plao kha
Are you the owner of this car? (polite question, female speaker)
The proposition is คุณเป็นเจ้าของรถคันนี้ “you are the owner of this car.” หรือเปล่า asks the listener to choose between that proposition and its negative alternative. There is no subject–auxiliary inversion like English are you...?
เมื่อวานคุณส่งใบสมัครหรือเปล่าครับ
muea wan khun song bai samak rue plao khrap
Did you submit the application yesterday? (polite question, male speaker)
The past reading comes from เมื่อวาน. ส่ง remains unchanged, and หรือเปล่า does not carry tense.
| Productive frame | Substitution | What is being checked? |
|---|---|---|
| V + หรือเปล่า | ไปหรือเปล่า | whether the event will/does occur |
| nominal predicate + หรือเปล่า | เป็นหมอหรือเปล่า | whether an identity holds |
| V + ได้ + หรือเปล่า | เปิดได้หรือเปล่า | whether ability or permission is available |
| V + แล้ว + หรือเปล่า | ส่งแล้วหรือเปล่า | whether completion has occurred |
| matrix + ว่า + proposition + หรือเปล่า | ไม่รู้ว่าเขามาหรือเปล่า | embedded whether-or-not content |
| เปล่า + polite particle | เปล่าครับ | reject the active proposition |
Event, identity, ability, and completion inside the question
Different predicate types can occur before หรือเปล่า. The question does not erase their internal grammar.
ร้านนี้รับบัตรเครดิตหรือเปล่าคะ
ran ni rap bat khredit rue plao kha
Does this shop accept credit cards? (polite question, female customer)
เปิดไฟล์นี้ในโทรศัพท์ได้หรือเปล่าครับ
poet fai ni nai thorasap dai rue plao khrap
Can this file be opened on a phone? (polite question, male speaker)
In the second example, เปิดไฟล์นี้ในโทรศัพท์ได้ is the proposition. ได้ remains inside the polar alternatives, so the question concerns ability or practical possibility. Placing เปล่า beside เปิด would not create English cannot.
With แล้ว, the speaker checks whether a boundary has been reached:
คุณแจ้งลูกค้าแล้วหรือเปล่าคะ
khun chaeng luk kha laeo rue plao kha
Have you informed the customer? (polite question, female speaker; completion check)
This can be close to แจ้งลูกค้าหรือยัง, but the viewpoints differ. หรือเปล่า offers “did it happen or not?”; หรือยัง asks whether the expected event has happened yet. Context often makes both possible, but they are not mechanically interchangeable.
เปล่า as a short denial
Used alone or with a polite particle, เปล่า rejects the proposition currently under discussion. It often corrects an assumption, suspicion, or attribution.
เปล่าค่ะ ฉันไม่ได้เป็นคนย้ายเอกสาร
plao kha chan mai dai pen khon yai ekkasan
No, I wasn't the person who moved the documents. (polite corrective denial, female speaker)
The short เปล่า rejects the accusation; ไม่ได้เป็น then states the correction explicitly.
เปล่าครับ ผมแค่ถามเพราะเห็นไฟยังเปิดอยู่
plao khrap phom khae tham phro hen fai yang poet yu
No; I only asked because I saw that the light was still on. (polite denial, male speaker)
A bare เปล่า! can sound abrupt or defensive when the accusation is sensitive. Adding ครับ/ค่ะ, a reason, or a corrected fact helps manage the interaction. Conversely, a simple preference question is often answered by repeating the predicate: เอาไหม—ไม่เอาครับ “Do you want it?—No, thanks.” เปล่าครับ is possible as a denial, but it is not a universal Thai word for every English no.
Conversational Thai also allows subject + เปล่า + predicate + particle in a narrower setting: the speaker playfully or defensively rejects what the other person has just implied. This is still reply-level denial, not the general negation pattern for reporting an event.
ผมเปล่าบอกหัวหน้านะครับ แค่ถามเฉย ๆ
phom plao bok huana na khrap khae tham choei choei
I didn't tell the boss, really; I only asked. (playful-defensive conversational denial, male speaker)
Embedded หรือเปล่า means “whether”
The same form can close an embedded proposition after a cognition or speech predicate. The whole sentence is then a statement, not necessarily a direct question to the listener.
ยังไม่รู้ว่าพรุ่งนี้ฝนจะตกหรือเปล่าค่ะ
yang mai ru wa phrung ni fon cha tok rue plao kha
I still don't know whether it will rain tomorrow. (polite statement, female speaker)
ไม่ negates knowing, while ฝนจะตกหรือเปล่า supplies what is unknown. The sentence does not assert that it will not rain. This scope is visible from ว่า and the final position of หรือเปล่า.
ช่วยถามเขาหน่อยว่าจะมาประชุมหรือเปล่าครับ
chuai tham khao noi wa cha ma prachum rue plao khrap
Please ask whether they will come to the meeting. (polite request, male speaker)
The prospective จะ belongs to the embedded visit. The omitted embedded subject is recovered as เขา from the higher clause; Thai does not need to repeat it.
Focus and the size of the proposition
A topic or time phrase placed before the clause helps specify exactly what is being checked. พรุ่งนี้คุณเข้าบริษัทหรือเปล่า asks about tomorrow, not the person's general employment. Objects with classifiers keep ordinary noun-phrase order, as in รถคันนี้; หรือเปล่า does not change that order.
An alternative question with two named choices uses หรือ differently: คุณจะนั่งรถไฟหรือรถทัวร์ asks “train or bus?” คุณจะนั่งรถไฟหรือเปล่า instead asks whether taking the train is true at all. เปล่า closes the negative alternative rather than naming a second transport choice.
เย็นนี้คุณจะนั่งรถไฟกลับหรือเปล่าครับ
yen ni khun cha nang rot fai klap rue plao khrap
Are you going back by train this evening? (polite question, male speaker)
Register and other meanings of เปล่า
Full หรือเปล่า is neutral in conversation and appropriate in careful writing that represents speech. หรือไม่ is more formal/written, especially in reports, forms, and institutional questions. Spoken reductions such as รึเปล่า are common; spell the full form in careful prose. ปะ/ป่ะ occurs in informal chat and casual speech and should not be presented as the neutral written standard.
เปล่า also has a lexical meaning “empty, bare, without anything,” as in แก้วเปล่า “an empty glass” and มือเปล่า “empty-handed.” In those noun phrases it follows the noun. The lexical adjective and the denial particle share a form but occupy different constructions.
ขอแก้วเปล่าหนึ่งใบค่ะ
kho kaeo plao nueng bai kha
Could I have one empty glass, please? (polite request, female speaker; lexical เปล่า)
Ordinary-polite dialogue
เมื่อกี้คุณโทรหาฉันหรือเปล่าคะ
muea ki khun tho ha chan rue plao kha
Did you call me just now? (polite question, female speaker)
เปล่าครับ น่าจะเป็นเบอร์ของฝ่ายส่งของ
plao khrap na cha pen boe khong fai song khong
No. It was probably the delivery department's number. (polite denial, male speaker)
The reply rejects the suspected caller and supplies a likely alternative. คะ marks the woman's question, while ครับ keeps the man's correction polite.
Common Mistakes
1. Fronting หรือเปล่า like an English auxiliary
❌ หรือเปล่าคุณทำงานวันเสาร์คะ
Incorrect order — หรือเปล่า follows the proposition being evaluated.
✅ คุณทำงานวันเสาร์หรือเปล่าคะ
khun tham ngan wan sao rue plao kha
Do you work on Saturdays? (polite question, female speaker)
2. Stacking two polar-question endings
❌ พรุ่งนี้คุณไปไหมหรือเปล่าครับ
Incorrect neutral question — ไหม and หรือเปล่า compete for the same polar-question function here.
✅ พรุ่งนี้คุณไปหรือเปล่าครับ
phrung ni khun pai rue plao khrap
Are you going tomorrow? (polite question, male speaker)
3. Using เปล่า as a context-free preverbal statement negator
❌ เมื่อเช้าฉันเปล่าเข้าประชุมค่ะ
Unnatural as a neutral, context-free past report — preverbal เปล่า is a marked conversational denial, not the ordinary event negator.
✅ เมื่อเช้าฉันไม่ได้เข้าประชุมค่ะ
muea chao chan mai dai khao prachum kha
I did not attend the meeting this morning. (polite statement, female speaker)
4. Confusing “or not?” with “yet?”
❌ รายงานเสร็จหรือเปล่าคะ หมายถึงเสร็จหรือยังเสมอ
Incorrect analysis — หรือเปล่า checks truth; หรือยัง specifically asks whether an expected state has been reached yet.
✅ รายงานเสร็จหรือยังคะ
raingan set rue yang kha
Is the report finished yet? (polite status question, female speaker)
Key Takeaways
หรือเปล่า follows an intact proposition and asks whether it holds or not. Time, aspect, identity, and modality remain inside that proposition. Reply เปล่า when rejecting the active assumption, but use a full predicate-specific negative when the intended answer needs more precision. In embedded clauses, หรือเปล่า means “whether”; in noun phrases such as แก้วเปล่า, lexical เปล่า means “empty.”
