Thai ห้าม + predicate presents an action as forbidden: ห้ามเข้า “no entry,” ห้ามสูบบุหรี่ “smoking prohibited.” The source of the prohibition may be a public rule, an institution, or a person with authority. On a sign, that source and the general actor can remain unspoken because the setting supplies both.
ห้าม is not simply a stronger spelling of ไม่. It contributes modal meaning—permission for the following event is denied. It also differs from อย่า, which voices a speaker's immediate warning or request not to act.
See permission with ได้ for the contrasting pattern that makes an action available.
Bare ห้าม: the rule is enough
The most compact frame appears on signs, notices, and operating rules. The prohibited event follows ห้าม with its ordinary complements.
ห้ามวางสิ่งของขวางทางหนีไฟ
ham wang singkhong khwang thang ni fai
Do not place objects where they block the fire escape. (formal public sign)
There is no overt subject meaning “people,” no copula meaning “is,” and no passive ending corresponding to prohibited. Thai lets the visible rule speak directly.
บริเวณคลังสินค้าห้ามใช้โทรศัพท์มือถือค่ะ
boriwen khlang sinkha ham chai thorasap mue thue kha
Mobile-phone use is prohibited in the warehouse area. (formal-polite rule explanation, female voice)
The location comes first as a topic, while ใช้โทรศัพท์มือถือ remains the prohibited event. Moving a location does not change the form of ห้าม or ใช้.
| Productive frame | Substitution | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| ห้าม + event | ห้ามเข้า | the event is institutionally forbidden |
| place/topic + ห้าม + event | ชั้นนี้ห้ามถ่ายรูป | the ban applies in that place |
| ห้าม + actor + event | ห้ามเด็กใช้ลิฟต์คนเดียว | the named actor is barred from acting |
| authority + ห้าม + actor + event | บริษัทห้ามพนักงานเปิดเผยข้อมูล | the source and target of the ban are overt |
| ไม่/ไม่ได้ + ห้าม + event | ไม่ได้ห้ามนำกล้องเข้า | the act or existence of prohibition is denied |
| ห้ามมิให้ + actor + event | ห้ามมิให้บุคคลภายนอกเข้า | legal or administrative prohibition |
Naming the authority and the prohibited actor
When a person or institution actively imposes a ban, ห้าม behaves like a lexical verb “forbid.” The authority precedes ห้าม; a person directly after it is interpreted as the actor of the next predicate.
บริษัทห้ามพนักงานบันทึกเสียงระหว่างประชุมครับ
borisat ham phanakngan banthuek siang rawang prachum khrap
The company prohibits employees from recording audio during meetings. (formal-polite workplace report, male speaker)
บริษัท is the prohibiting authority. พนักงาน is both the target of ห้าม and the understood agent of บันทึก. English inserts from recording; Thai uses participant order and an unchanged second verb.
หมอห้ามคุณพ่อขับรถสองสัปดาห์ค่ะ
mo ham khun pho khap rot song sapda kha
The doctor prohibited my father from driving for two weeks. (polite, female report)
The two-week phrase measures the restriction, not a past tense on ห้าม. Context can locate when the doctor issued it; the sentence foregrounds how long the prohibited activity is to remain unavailable.
Eventive predicates such as เข้า, ใช้, สูบ, and เปิด are the clearest complements. A state that cannot reasonably be controlled is a poor rule: ห้ามป่วย “being ill is prohibited” is normally absurd outside humor or criticism. Institutions regulate actions and controllable conduct, not grammatical predicate categories in the abstract.
ห้าม, อย่า, ต้องไม่, and V ไม่ได้
These patterns can concern the same real-world action while presenting different sources of force:
อย่าเดินเข้าไปนะคะ พื้นยังเปียกอยู่
ya doen khao pai na kha phuen yang piak yu
Please don't walk in; the floor is still wet. (immediate polite warning, female speaker)
ห้ามเข้าพื้นที่นี้โดยไม่ได้รับอนุญาต
ham khao phuenthi ni doi mai dai rap anuyat
Entry into this area without authorization is prohibited. (formal written rule)
The first is a person's preventive directive. The second invokes a standing rule. ต้องไม่เข้า would make non-entry an obligation in a procedure. เข้าไม่ได้ could report denied permission, a locked entrance, or practical impossibility depending on context.
ประตูด้านหลังเข้าไม่ได้ครับ ระบบล็อกอัตโนมัติ
pratu dan lang khao mai dai khrap rabop lok attanomat
You cannot enter through the back door; it locks automatically. (polite practical explanation, male speaker)
This last sentence foregrounds unavailable access, not necessarily a prohibition. English can't and may not often blur these sources, but Thai order and lexical choice keep them distinguishable.
Negating the prohibition itself
Placing ไม่ or ไม่ได้ before ห้าม reverses the scope. ไม่ห้าม says that a rule or person does not forbid the event. ไม่ได้ห้าม commonly denies that someone issued such a prohibition in the relevant situation.
อาคารนี้ไม่ห้ามนำจักรยานขึ้นลิฟต์ครับ
akhan ni mai ham nam chakkrayan khuen lip khrap
This building does not prohibit taking bicycles in the elevator. (formal-polite clarification, male speaker)
แม่ไม่ได้ห้ามลูกไปค่ายค่ะ แค่ขอให้โทรกลับทุกวัน
mae mai dai ham luk pai khai kha khae kho hai tho klap thuk wan
The mother did not forbid her child from going to camp; she only asked the child to call every day. (polite, female report)
In the second example, the denied event is the mother's forbidding. It does not mean “the child is forbidden not to go.” This is why ห้ามไม่ + V is dangerous when a simple ban is intended: it literally places a negative event inside the prohibition and can reverse the logic.
Time, aspect, and the life of a rule
ห้าม never conjugates. Time and aspect expressions locate the rule or the act of imposing it.
ตั้งแต่สัปดาห์หน้า โรงเรียนจะห้ามรถเข้าหลังเจ็ดโมงค่ะ
tangtae sapda na rongrian cha ham rot khao lang chet mong kha
Starting next week, the school will prohibit vehicles from entering after seven. (formal-polite announcement, female voice)
จะ places the policy in the future. In ยังห้าม...อยู่, ยัง and อยู่ present an existing restriction as continuing:
ตอนนี้สวนสาธารณะยังห้ามจัดงานใหญ่ในตอนกลางคืนอยู่ครับ
ton ni suan satharana yang ham chat ngan yai nai ton klang khuen yu khrap
The public park still prohibits large nighttime events. (formal-polite current-rule explanation, male speaker)
Neither example gives ห้าม a future or progressive form. The surrounding particles and time phrases establish the reference period.
Focus and event boundaries
Everything after ห้าม that belongs to one predicate chain falls within the prohibition. In ห้ามนำอาหารเข้าห้องประชุม, bringing, the food, and inward motion form the banned event. Repeating ห้าม before each verb would split a coherent chain.
A fronted topic can narrow the domain: หลังสี่ทุ่มห้ามใช้ประตูนี้ makes the late-night period the setting for the rule. Focus expressions must be placed with care. ห้ามใช้เฉพาะประตูหน้า literally prohibits using only the front door and may imply that several doors must be used; it does not safely mean “only the front door is prohibited.” Thai scope follows order rather than English intonation alone. A clear version names the restricted item as topic: ประตูหน้าห้ามใช้.
หลังสี่ทุ่มห้ามใช้ประตูหน้า กรุณาเข้าทางลานจอดรถค่ะ
lang si thum ham chai pratu na karuna khao thang lan chot rot kha
After ten p.m., the front door must not be used; please enter through the parking area. (formal-polite notice, female voice)
Short negative replies
When someone asks for permission, staff can answer simply ห้ามครับ/ค่ะ if a rule prohibits the action. The reply is concise and firm because the omitted action is recoverable. ไม่ได้ครับ/ค่ะ also denies availability, but without more context it may reflect a rule, inability, or another obstacle.
ตรงนี้จอดรถได้ไหมคะ
trong ni chot rot dai mai kha
May I park here? (polite question, female driver)
ห้ามครับ เป็นทางรถพยาบาล
ham khrap pen thang rot phayaban
No, parking is prohibited; this is an ambulance route. (firm polite reply, male staff member)
The explanation makes the institutional basis clear. A bare ห้าม between equals can sound controlling if no shared rule or authority supports it.
Register
Bare ห้าม is neutral on public signs and firm in speech. ห้ามมิให้ is formal/legal and common in regulations, contracts, and administrative notices. มิ is not an everyday conversational replacement for ไม่.
ห้ามมิให้บุคคลภายนอกเปิดเผยข้อมูลในเอกสารฉบับนี้
ham mi hai bukkhon phai nok poetphoei khomun nai ekkasan chabap ni
Outside parties are prohibited from disclosing information in this document. (formal/legal)
Ordinary-polite dialogue
หน้าร้านจอดรถได้หรือเปล่าคะ
na ran chot rot dai rue plao kha
Is parking allowed in front of the shop? (polite, female speaker)
ตรงประตูห้ามจอดครับ แต่จอดด้านข้างได้
trong pratu ham chot khrap tae chot dan khang dai
Parking by the entrance is prohibited, but you may park at the side. (polite, male speaker)
The man invokes the rule only for the entrance area and uses ได้ for the permitted alternative. The question particle คะ and statement particle ครับ mark ordinary polite interaction.
Common Mistakes
1. Using “no need” for a prohibition
❌ ผู้เยี่ยมชมไม่ต้องแตะอุปกรณ์
Wrong for a ban — ไม่ต้อง says visitors have no need to touch the equipment.
✅ ห้ามผู้เยี่ยมชมแตะอุปกรณ์จัดแสดง
ham phu yiamchom tae upakon chat sadaeng
Visitors must not touch the display equipment. (formal public rule)
2. Placing ห้าม after the event
❌ นำสารไวไฟเข้าห้าม
Incorrect order — ห้าม precedes the prohibited event.
✅ ห้ามนำสารไวไฟเข้าอาคาร
ham nam san wai fai khao akhan
Flammable materials may not be brought into the building. (formal sign)
3. Misplacing the prohibited actor
❌ บริษัทห้ามส่งพนักงานข้อมูลลับ
Incorrect for ‘the company forbids employees to send confidential data’ — this order can make employees the thing being sent.
✅ บริษัทห้ามพนักงานส่งข้อมูลลับทางแชต
borisat ham phanakngan song khomun lap thang chaet
The company prohibits employees from sending confidential data through chat. (formal workplace rule)
4. Doubling negation inside a simple ban
❌ ห้ามไม่ใช้บันไดหนีไฟ
Wrong for ‘do not use the fire escape’ — it literally prohibits not using it.
✅ ห้ามใช้บันไดหนีไฟ ยกเว้นกรณีฉุกเฉิน
ham chai bandai ni fai yokwen karani chukchoen
Do not use the fire escape except in an emergency. (formal safety rule)
Key Takeaways
ห้าม places a following event outside what an authority permits. A sign can omit both authority and actor; a full clause may name authority + ห้าม + actor + event. อย่า gives a personal warning, ต้องไม่ imposes nonperformance, and V ไม่ได้ reports unavailable action. Negation before ห้าม denies the prohibition itself, while time and aspect around ห้าม locate when a rule begins, continues, or was issued.
