อย่า and Negative Commands

Thai uses อย่า + predicate for an ordinary negative command: “do not do X.” The following verb does not change form, and the person being addressed is normally omitted because the speech situation already identifies them. อย่าเปิด can therefore mean “don't open it” without a Thai equivalent of English auxiliary do or an overt you.

อย่า presents the negative directive as coming from the speaker—a warning, request, reminder, or piece of advice. It contrasts with ordinary ไม่, whose default role is to deny a statement, and with ห้าม, which frames an action as forbidden by a rule or authority. Context and directive intonation can sometimes give ไม่ + predicate prohibitive force, but อย่า marks the intended negative command directly and without that dependence on context.

For the broader choice between personal warnings and institutional bans, see prohibitives with อย่า and ห้าม.

The core contrast: statement versus directive

Compare the same predicate under ไม่ and อย่า:

วันนี้ผมไม่ใช้เครื่องนี้ครับ

wan ni phom mai chai khrueang ni khrap

I am not using this machine today. (polite statement, male speaker)

วันนี้อย่าใช้เครื่องนี้นะครับ ช่างกำลังตรวจอยู่

wan ni ya chai khrueang ni na khrap chang kamlang truat yu

Please don't use this machine today; a technician is inspecting it. (polite warning, male speaker)

The first clause reports the speaker's behavior. The second directs the listener. English builds do not use with an auxiliary, but Thai selects the dedicated prohibitive อย่า before the unchanged predicate ใช้เครื่องนี้.

FrameProductive substitutionMeaning
อย่า + Vอย่าแตะdo not touch
อย่าเพิ่ง + Vอย่าเพิ่งเปิดdo not open yet
อย่า + V + อีกอย่าโทรมาอีกdo not call again
อย่า + V + เลยอย่าไปเลยdo not go at all / better not go
อย่าลืม + Vอย่าลืมนัดdo not forget; remember to...
อย่าให้ + clauseอย่าให้เด็กออกไปdo not let/cause the lower event
💡
Place อย่า immediately before the predicate whose occurrence the speaker wants to prevent. Time phrases and topics may come first, but English do, not, and you do not supply a Thai word-order template.

Warnings, requests, and advice

Bare อย่า! is appropriately urgent when someone is about to do something dangerous. In a routine interaction, นะ, นะครับ, or นะคะ can present the directive as a reminder or appeal for cooperation. The particle changes interpersonal stance, not negative scope.

อย่าจับหม้อใบนี้นะครับ ยังร้อนอยู่

ya chap mo bai ni na khrap yang ron yu

Don't touch this pot; it is still hot. (concerned polite warning, male speaker)

อย่ากังวลไปเลยค่ะ เดี๋ยวเราช่วยกันแก้

ya kangwon pai loei kha diao rao chuai kan kae

Please don't worry; we'll work together to fix it. (reassuring polite advice, female speaker)

Actions under the listener's control are the clearest fit. Thai also conventionally uses อย่า with emotions or mental states such as อย่ากังวล “don't worry” and อย่าเสียใจ “don't be sad.” This is advice about managing or moving away from a state, not a claim that every state can be switched off on command. อย่าป่วย “don't be ill” is normally inappropriate as literal advice; a speaker would tell the listener what preventive action to take instead.

In formal public requests, กรุณาอย่า or โปรดอย่า may appear. A firm rule is still more naturally framed with ห้าม.

กรุณาอย่าส่งเสียงดังในบริเวณห้องพักผู้ป่วยค่ะ

karuna ya song siang dang nai boriwen hong phak phu puai kha

Please do not make loud noise in the patient-room area. (formal-polite public request, female voice)

Time and aspect come from separate material

อย่า has no tense. A future time phrase can locate the prevented event, while context can make the command immediate.

พรุ่งนี้อย่ามาสายอีกนะคะ เราเริ่มประชุมเก้าโมงตรง

phrung ni ya ma sai ik na kha rao roem prachum kao mong trong

Please don't be late again tomorrow; we start the meeting at exactly nine. (polite reminder, female speaker)

The future reading comes from พรุ่งนี้, not from a future form of มา. For a delayed command, Thai places เพิ่ง inside the scope of อย่า:

อย่าเพิ่งปิดคอมพิวเตอร์นะคะ กำลังสำรองข้อมูลอยู่

ya phoeng pit khomphiotoe na kha kamlang samrong khomun yu

Don't turn off the computer yet; it is backing up data. (polite warning, female speaker)

อย่าเพิ่งปิด postpones closing; it does not prohibit it permanently. By contrast, อย่าปิดอีก rejects another occurrence. Progressive กำลัง does not normally follow อย่า to mean “stop doing”; if an event is already under way, use a predicate such as หยุดคุย “stop talking” or อย่าคุยต่อ “don't keep talking.”

💡
อย่าเพิ่ง delays the first or next occurrence; อย่า...อีก rejects repetition. Neither distinction is a tense ending—the placement of เพิ่ง or อีก changes the event inside the directive.

Scope over complex predicates

อย่า takes scope over the predicate sequence that follows. Objects, directions, and results remain in their ordinary Thai positions.

อย่ายกกล่องใบนี้ไปวางข้างนอกนะครับ

ya yok klong bai ni pai wang khang nok na khrap

Don't carry this box outside. (polite warning, male speaker; one prohibited handling-and-motion sequence)

The whole ยก...ไปวาง... sequence is prevented. อย่า does not need to be repeated before every verb, because one negative directive can cover one coherent event chain.

With อย่าให้ + clause, the speaker prevents a caused or permitted result:

อย่าให้เด็กวิ่งออกไปบนถนนนะคะ

ya hai dek wing ok pai bon thanon na kha

Don't let the child run out into the road. (urgent polite warning, female speaker)

The addressee is responsible for prevention, while เด็ก is the understood subject of วิ่ง. The command does not tell the addressee not to run. Participant order, not verb inflection, fixes that scope.

อย่าลืม turns prevention into a positive reminder

อย่าลืม + event literally says “do not forget the event,” so its practical force is positive: remember to do it.

วันนี้อย่าลืมแวะซื้อยาก่อนกลับบ้านนะครับ

wan ni ya luem wae sue ya kon klap ban na khrap

Don't forget to stop and buy medicine before going home today. (polite reminder, male speaker)

The event แวะซื้อยา is not prohibited. Only forgetting it falls under อย่า. This compositional scope explains why adding another ไม่—อย่าไม่ลืม—does not improve the reminder.

Focus and omitted participants

A time phrase or object topic can narrow what the command concerns:

ไฟล์นี้อย่าลบนะคะ ยังต้องใช้พรุ่งนี้

fai ni ya lop na kha yang tong chai phrung ni

Don't delete this file; we still need it tomorrow. (polite workplace warning, female speaker)

ไฟล์นี้ is fronted as the object under discussion. The addressee and repeated object after ลบ are omitted because both are recoverable. Thai does not add an article to ไฟล์ or an obligatory pronoun before ลบ.

Short negative replies

A bare อย่า! can stop an action in an emergency. In calmer speech, a short form normally retains enough material to show what is being prevented. อย่าเพิ่งครับ/ค่ะ is natural when someone has just proposed acting and the speaker wants a delay. ไม่ครับ/ไม่ค่ะ by itself normally answers a question or states a refusal. A fuller ไม่ + predicate + นะ can be understood as a context-bound reminder or warning, but อย่า remains the clearest neutral choice when the listener must recognize a negative command immediately.

ส่งเอกสารตอนนี้เลยไหมคะ

song ekkasan ton ni loei mai kha

Shall I send the documents right now? (polite question, female speaker)

อย่าเพิ่งส่งครับ ผมขอตรวจอีกครั้ง

ya phoeng song khrap phom kho truat ik khrang

Please don't send them yet; let me check once more. (polite reply, male speaker)

The proposal supplies the omitted documents in the reply. Without that context, naming the object would be clearer.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

เปิดหน้าต่างได้ไหมคะ ข้างในอากาศร้อนมากค่ะ

poet natang dai mai kha khang nai akat ron mak kha

May I open the window? It is very hot inside. (polite, female speaker)

อย่าเพิ่งเปิดครับ ข้างนอกมีควัน เดี๋ยวผมเปิดแอร์ให้

ya phoeng poet khrap khang nok mi khwan diao phom poet ae hai

Please don't open it yet; there is smoke outside. I'll turn on the air conditioner for you. (polite, male speaker)

The male reply delays one action and offers an alternative. คะ marks the woman's question, ค่ะ her statement, and ครับ the man's considerate response.

Common Mistakes

1. Relying on context-bound ไม่ for an unambiguous command

❌ คุณไม่แตะปุ่มนี้นะคะ

Ambiguous for the intended neutral command — context and intonation may make this a directive, but it can also resemble a statement about the listener.

✅ อย่าแตะปุ่มสีแดงนะคะ

ya tae pum si daeng na kha

Please don't touch the red button. (polite warning, female speaker)

2. Moving อย่า after the action

❌ เปิดอย่าฝาหม้อตอนนี้ครับ

Incorrect order — อย่า must precede the event it prohibits.

✅ อย่าเปิดฝาหม้อตอนนี้ครับ

ya poet fa mo ton ni khrap

Don't open the pot lid now. (polite warning, male speaker)

3. Combining อย่า with a progressive to stop an ongoing action

❌ อย่ากำลังคุยกันค่ะ

Incorrect — กำลัง presents an ongoing event; it does not supply the natural ‘stop continuing’ frame here.

✅ อย่าคุยกันต่อนะคะ เริ่มเรียนแล้วค่ะ

ya khui kan to na kha roem rian laeo kha

Please don't keep talking; class has started. (polite, female teacher)

4. Doubling the negative inside อย่าลืม

❌ อย่าไม่ลืมปิดไฟนะครับ

Incorrectly stacked negation — the conventional reminder is อย่าลืม + event.

✅ อย่าลืมปิดไฟก่อนออกจากห้องนะครับ

ya luem pit fai kon ok chak hong na khrap

Don't forget to turn off the light before leaving the room. (polite reminder, male speaker)

Key Takeaways

อย่า precedes the event a speaker wants to prevent. It differs from statement ไม่ and rule-based ห้าม; particles and reasons calibrate its social delivery. เพิ่ง postpones the event, อีก rejects repetition, ลืม creates a positive reminder, and ให้ introduces a lower event whose occurrence must be prevented. Thai normally omits the addressee and recoverable objects, while time, aspect, and context—not conjugation—locate the command.
