ห้าม and Institutional Prohibition

ห้าม + event presents an event as forbidden. It is the compact form seen on public signs, in rules, and in firm instructions: ห้ามเข้า “no entry,” ห้ามสูบบุหรี่ “no smoking.” Unlike personal อย่า “don't,” ห้าม foregrounds authority and denied permission. The authority may be an institution, a law, a person with control, or simply the rule active in the setting.

English often uses must not, may not, no + noun, and prohibited. Thai can package all of these as ห้าม followed by an unchanged event. It does not need an English-style passive or a conjugated auxiliary.

ห้ามนำสัตว์เลี้ยงเข้าอาคาร

ham nam sat liang khao akhan

Pets may not be brought into the building. (formal public sign)

พื้นที่นี้ห้ามใช้โทรศัพท์มือถือค่ะ

phuenthi ni ham chai thorasap mue thue kha

Mobile phones may not be used in this area. (formal-polite rule explanation, female voice)

ห้ามผู้ไม่มีบัตรผ่านเข้าห้องควบคุมครับ

ham phu mai mi bat phan khao hong khuapkhum khrap

Anyone without a pass is prohibited from entering the control room. (formal-polite security instruction, male voice)

The first two clauses omit both authority and actor because a sign or venue supplies them. In the third, ผู้ไม่มีบัตรผ่าน is the participant targeted by ห้าม and also the understood subject of เข้า. This pivotal role is identified by order, without an English-style from + -ing complement.

💡
On a sign, ห้าม + event is complete. Do not add a dummy subject or translate English is prohibited with a Thai copula. The sign itself supplies the institutional authority.

Naming the authority or prohibited person

When someone actively imposes the ban, ห้าม behaves like a lexical verb meaning “forbid.” Its subject is the authority; a person after ห้าม is understood as the subject of the following event.

บริษัทห้ามพนักงานส่งข้อมูลลูกค้าทางอีเมลส่วนตัวค่ะ

borisat ham phanak ngan song khomun luk kha thang imen suan tua kha

The company prohibits employees from sending customer information through personal email. (formal corporate rule, female voice)

ครูห้ามนักเรียนออกจากห้องก่อนหมดเวลาครับ

khru ham nakrian ok chak hong kon mot wela khrap

The teacher forbids the students from leaving the room before time is up. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

เจ้าหน้าที่ห้ามรถบรรทุกเข้าถนนสายนี้หลังหกโมงเย็นค่ะ

chao nathi ham rot banthuk khao thanon sai ni lang hok mong yen kha

Officials prohibit trucks from entering this road after six p.m. (formal-polite traffic explanation, female voice)

Thai does not insert equivalents of English from and -ing: ห้าม + actor + event is a serial/pivotal participant frame. The following verb remains uninflected.

The legal form ห้ามมิให้ is (formal/legal). มิ is a formal negator, and ให้ introduces the person or event that must not be allowed. It is appropriate in statutes, contracts, and official notices, not ordinary conversation.

ห้ามมิให้ผู้ใดนำสารเคมีออกจากพื้นที่โดยไม่ได้รับอนุญาต

ham mi hai phu dai nam san khemi ok chak phuenthi doi mai dai rap anuyat

No person may remove chemicals from the area without authorization. (formal legal-administrative wording)

For everyday speech, use ห้าม + person + event or a direct prohibition rather than imitating legal prose.

ห้าม, อย่า, ต้องไม่, and V ไม่ได้

These forms may describe the same real-world restriction but adopt different viewpoints:

FormViewpointNatural context
ห้ามเปิดประตูopening is forbiddenrule, sign, firm ban
อย่าเปิดประตูนะspeaker asks/warns listener not to openpersonal directive
ต้องไม่เปิดประตูnon-opening is obligatoryrequirement or procedure
เปิดประตูไม่ได้opening is unavailableno permission or practical impossibility

อย่าเข้าใกล้ประตูนะครับ รถกำลังถอย

ya khao klai pratu na khrap rot kamlang thoi

Please don't go near the gate; a vehicle is reversing. (urgent personal warning, male speaker)

ระหว่างการตรวจสอบ ต้องไม่เปิดเครื่องค่ะ

rawang kan truat sop tong mai poet khrueang kha

During inspection, the machine must not be switched on. (formal-polite procedural requirement, female voice)

วันนี้เข้าอาคารทางด้านหน้าไม่ได้ครับ เพราะมีงานซ่อม

wan ni khao akhan thang dan na mai dai khrap phro mi ngan som

You cannot enter the building through the front today because repair work is underway. (ordinary polite access explanation, male speaker)

The last sentence can amount to denied permission, but it foregrounds unavailable access. ห้ามเข้า foregrounds the rule. The prohibitive comparison develops personal อย่า; permission with ได้ develops the availability contrast.

💡
Choose by communicative source, not by English wording: อย่า voices a speaker's prevention, ห้าม invokes a ban, ต้องไม่ makes nonperformance obligatory, and V ไม่ได้ says the event is unavailable.

Negating the act of prohibition

ไม่ห้าม means that someone or some rule does not prohibit an event. ไม่ได้ห้าม commonly denies that a prohibition was issued or corrects an assumption: “I didn't forbid it.” These do not create a stronger ban; they negate ห้าม itself.

กฎของอาคารไม่ห้ามนำจักรยานเข้าลิฟต์ครับ

kot khong akhan mai ham nam chakkrayan khao lip khrap

The building rules do not prohibit taking bicycles into the elevator. (formal-polite clarification, male speaker)

ผมไม่ได้ห้ามคุณไปครับ แค่ขอให้กลับก่อนค่ำ

phom mai dai ham khun pai khrap khae kho hai klap kon kham

I didn't forbid you from going; I only asked you to return before dark. (ordinary polite clarification, male speaker)

This scope follows ordinary Thai order. In ไม่ได้ห้าม, preverbal ไม่ได้ denies the act or fact of forbidding. In ห้ามไป, ห้าม scopes over going. Do not place negation after ห้าม by copying English auxiliary order.

Time and aspect around a ban

ห้าม does not conjugate. Time phrases and aspect expressions locate either the rule or the act of issuing it.

ตั้งแต่เดือนหน้า ทางอาคารจะห้ามจอดรถค้างคืนค่ะ

tangtae duean na thang akhan cha ham chot rot khang khuen kha

Starting next month, the building management will prohibit overnight parking. (formal-polite announcement, female voice)

ตอนนี้ทางโรงพยาบาลยังห้ามเยี่ยมผู้ป่วยหลังสองทุ่มอยู่ครับ

ton ni thang rongphayaban yang ham yiam phu puai lang song thum yu khrap

The hospital still prohibits visiting patients after eight p.m. (formal-polite current-rule explanation, male voice)

ผู้จัดการประกาศห้ามใช้ห้องนี้ไว้แล้วค่ะ

phu chatkan prakat ham chai hong ni wai laeo kha

The manager has already issued a ban on using this room. (formal-polite workplace report, female speaker)

จะห้าม projects a future ban. ยังห้าม...อยู่ presents the restriction as continuing. In the last example, ประกาศ...ไว้แล้ว presents an issued decision that remains in force; แล้ว is not a past-tense ending on ห้าม.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

ห้องจัดแสดงนี้ห้ามถ่ายวิดีโอไหมคะ

hong chat sadaeng ni ham thai widio mai kha

Is video recording prohibited in this gallery? (ordinary polite question, female visitor)

ห้ามครับ แต่ถ่ายภาพนิ่งได้

ham khrap tae thai phap ning dai

Yes, it is prohibited, but still photography is allowed. (ordinary polite reply, male staff member; omitted event is recoverable)

ถ้าไม่ใช้แฟลชก็ยังถ่ายวิดีโอไม่ได้หรือคะ

tha mai chai flaet ko yang thai widio mai dai rue kha

Even without flash, video still isn't allowed? (polite confirmation, female visitor)

ไม่ได้ครับ เป็นข้อกำหนดของพิพิธภัณฑ์

mai dai khrap pen kho kamnot khong phiphitthaphan

No, it isn't. It is a museum rule. (ordinary polite reply, male staff member)

Common Mistakes

1. Using the no-necessity frame for a prohibition

❌ ไม่ต้องวางของขวางทางออก

Wrong for ‘do not block the exit’; ไม่ต้อง says there is no need to place objects there rather than banning the event.

✅ ห้ามวางของขวางทางออก

ham wang khong khwang thang ok

Do not place objects so as to block the exit. (formal public sign)

2. Moving ห้าม after the prohibited event

❌ นำอาหารเข้าห้ามค่ะ

Incorrect—ห้าม precedes the event within its scope.

✅ บริเวณนี้ห้ามนำอาหารจากข้างนอกเข้าค่ะ

boriwen ni ham nam ahan chak khang nok khao kha

Outside food may not be brought into this area. (formal-polite venue rule, female voice)

3. Putting the negator after permission ได้

❌ ห้องนี้เข้าได้ไม่ครับ เพราะเป็นพื้นที่เฉพาะเจ้าหน้าที่

Incorrect—denied permission is เข้าไม่ได้, not เข้าได้ไม่ by English auxiliary-negation order.

✅ เข้าห้องนี้ไม่ได้ครับ เพราะเป็นพื้นที่สำหรับเจ้าหน้าที่เท่านั้น

khao hong ni mai dai khrap phro pen phuenthi samrap chao nathi thaonan

You may not enter this room because it is restricted to staff. (ordinary polite security explanation, male voice)

4. Doubling negation inside a simple ban

❌ ห้ามไม่สูบบุหรี่ตรงระเบียงค่ะ

Wrong for ‘smoking is prohibited’; this places a negative event under ห้าม and reverses the intended scope.

✅ ห้ามสูบบุหรี่บริเวณระเบียงค่ะ

ham sup buri boriwen rabiang kha

Smoking is prohibited on the balcony. (formal-polite rule, female voice)

Key Takeaways

  • Bare ห้าม + event is complete on signs and in rules; the setting supplies the authority and general actor.
  • authority + ห้าม + person + event names who forbids whom from doing what, without an English infinitive or from phrase.
  • อย่า, ห้าม, ต้องไม่, and V ไม่ได้ differ in whether they foreground a warning, ban, obligation, or unavailable permission.
  • ไม่ห้าม and ไม่ได้ห้าม negate the act of forbidding; time and aspect do not change the form ห้าม.
