Permission with ได้

Thai commonly places ได้ after an event to say that the event is possible. When a rule, owner, or other authority supplies that possibility, the interpretation is permission: เข้าได้ can mean “may enter,” and ใช้ได้ can mean “may use.” The same position also expresses ability, circumstantial possibility, or successful performance, so permission comes from both order and context—not from ได้ alone.

This differs from English, which often changes between can, may, be allowed to, and manage to. Thai can keep event + ได้ while the situation identifies the source of access. When ambiguity matters, อนุญาตให้ “permit” or ได้รับอนุญาตให้ “be authorized to” names permission explicitly.

The permission frame

event + ไม่ได้event is unavailable, impossible, or not permittedจอดตรงนี้ไม่ได้
authority + อนุญาตให้ + person + eventnames the granting authorityบริษัทอนุญาตให้พนักงานทำงานที่บ้าน
person + ได้รับอนุญาตให้ + eventperson is formally authorizedได้รับอนุญาตให้เข้าพื้นที่
ได้grants permission when the event is recoverableได้ครับ / ได้ค่ะ

คุณกลับก่อนสี่โมงได้ครับ

khun klap kon si mong dai khrap

You may leave before four o'clock. (ordinary polite permission, male speaker)

บริเวณนี้ถ่ายรูปได้ค่ะ แต่ห้ามใช้แฟลช

boriwen ni thai rup dai kha tae ham chai flaet

You may take photos in this area, but flash is prohibited. (polite venue explanation, female speaker)

ขอชาร์จโทรศัพท์ตรงนี้ได้ไหมคะ

kho chat thorasap trong ni dai mai kha

May I charge my phone here? (ordinary polite permission request, female speaker)

The event predicate remains unchanged: กลับ, ถ่าย, and ชาร์จ do not acquire an infinitive form after a modal. In a declarative clause, postverbal ได้ presents the event as available. In a question, ได้ไหม asks the listener to confirm that availability.

💡
Postverbal ได้ does not inherently say who grants permission. A sign, house rule, owner, supervisor, or immediate conversation normally supplies that source. Use อนุญาตให้ when the source must be explicit.

Permission, ability, and situational possibility

The form V + ได้ is genuinely polyfunctional. เด็กคนนี้ว่ายน้ำได้ normally describes ability. วันนี้ใช้ห้องประชุมได้ can describe permission or simple availability. ในที่สุดเปิดประตูได้ reports success. Do not pretend that a mechanical English translation identifies the Thai category.

ตามกฎใหม่ นักศึกษายืมหนังสือได้ครั้งละห้าเล่มค่ะ

tam kot mai naksueksa yuem nangsue dai khrang la ha lem kha

Under the new rules, students may borrow five books at a time. (formal-polite rule explanation, female voice; permission)

ประตูบานนี้เปิดได้จากด้านในครับ

pratu ban ni poet dai chak dan nai khrap

This door can be opened from the inside. (ordinary polite explanation, male speaker; physical possibility)

ช่างซ่อมเครื่องแล้ว ตอนนี้เปิดได้ค่ะ

chang som khrueang laeo ton ni poet dai kha

The technician repaired the machine; now it can be switched on. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; restored possibility)

In an isolated sentence, เปิดได้ may allow more than one reading. Add a source phrase such as ตามกฎ, an authority with อนุญาตให้, or a physical reason when the distinction matters. The ability overview compares ได้ with learned-skill เป็น, formal สามารถ, and capacity ไหว.

Asking, granting, and refusing permission

For a direct permission request, Thai commonly uses ขอ + event + ได้ไหม. The understood actor of the event after ขอ is normally the requester. A plain event + ได้ไหม can also ask permission, but the same question may ask about ability or feasibility; context decides.

ผมขอเลื่อนเวลานัดไปเป็นช่วงเช้าได้ไหมครับ

phom kho luean wela nat pai pen chuang chao dai mai khrap

May I move the appointment to the morning? (polite request, male speaker)

ใช้โต๊ะตัวนี้ได้ไหมคะ

chai to tua ni dai mai kha

May I use this table? (ordinary polite question, female speaker; permission from context)

ได้ครับ แต่ขอให้เก็บของก่อนหกโมง

dai khrap tae kho hai kep khong kon hok mong

Yes, but please clear your things away before six. (ordinary polite permission, male speaker)

The short answer ได้ครับ grants the event supplied by the question. ไม่ได้ครับ refuses or says it is unavailable; a reason can prevent a bare refusal from sounding abrupt. The dedicated ขอ request-frame page explains how the requester and the requested actor are identified.

Formal notices and decisions often identify authority explicitly:

หัวหน้าอนุญาตให้ทีมทำงานจากบ้านพรุ่งนี้ค่ะ

hua na anuyat hai thim tham ngan chak ban phrung ni kha

The supervisor has allowed the team to work from home tomorrow. (formal-polite workplace report, female speaker)

ผู้รับเหมาได้รับอนุญาตให้เข้าพื้นที่แล้วครับ

phu rapmao dai rap anuyat hai khao phuenthi laeo khrap

The contractor has now been authorized to enter the area. (formal-polite administrative report, male speaker)

อนุญาตให้ names the authority as subject and the permitted person after ให้. ได้รับอนุญาตให้ presents the authorized person as subject. These are (formal/administrative) compared with contextual V + ได้.

Negation and position

Position around the event distinguishes a denied occurrence from denied ability or permission:

เมื่อวานเขาไม่ได้เข้าห้องเก็บเอกสารค่ะ

muea wan khao mai dai khao hong kep ekkasan kha

Yesterday he did not enter the records room. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; occurrence denied)

เมื่อวานเขาเข้าห้องเก็บเอกสารไม่ได้ค่ะ เพราะยังไม่มีสิทธิ์

muea wan khao khao hong kep ekkasan mai dai kha phro yang mai mi sit

Yesterday he could not enter the records room because he was not yet authorized. (ordinary polite explanation, female speaker; access denied)

In ไม่ได้เข้า, ไม่ negates realized entry. In เข้าไม่ได้, the event falls within a denied possibility or permission. This is not English auxiliary negation, and moving ไม่ changes scope. See ไม่ได้ versus V ไม่ได้ for the broader contrast.

An explicit prohibitive chooses a different frame: ห้ามเข้า means “entry prohibited.” เข้าไม่ได้ can be a practical explanation, a denial of access, or a statement of impossibility.

💡
Do not translate every V ไม่ได้ as “not allowed.” Ask what blocks the event: a rule gives a permission reading, while skill, damage, time, or physical circumstances give other possibility readings.

จะ, แล้ว, and continuing restrictions

The form ได้ remains unchanged under time and aspect expressions. จะ V ได้ projects future access; V ได้แล้ว says access or possibility is now available; ยัง V ไม่ได้ says it is not available yet.

หลังห้าโมงคุณจะใช้ลานจอดรถด้านหลังได้ครับ

lang ha mong khun cha chai lan chot rot dan lang dai khrap

After five, you will be allowed to use the rear parking area. (ordinary polite permission, male speaker)

ระบบอนุมัติคำขอแล้ว ตอนนี้เข้าใช้งานได้ค่ะ

rabop anumat kham kho laeo ton ni khao chai ngan dai kha

The system has approved the request; you can access it now. (ordinary polite service explanation, female voice)

ตอนนี้ยังนำรถเข้าไม่ได้ครับ เจ้าหน้าที่กำลังตรวจพื้นที่อยู่

ton ni yang nam rot khao mai dai khrap chao nathi kamlang truat phuenthi yu

Vehicles cannot be brought in yet; staff are inspecting the area. (ordinary polite temporary restriction, male voice)

จะ does not conjugate ได้ into a future tense. แล้ว marks a newly available state, while กำลัง...อยู่ describes the inspection that causes the restriction. Progressive marking does not normally attach directly to permission as though “being allowed” were an English progressive auxiliary.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

วันนี้ขอใช้ห้องเล็กต่อถึงหนึ่งทุ่มได้ไหมคะ

wan ni kho chai hong lek to thueng nueng thum dai mai kha

May I keep using the small room until seven this evening? (polite question, female speaker)

ได้ครับ แต่หลังหกโมงต้องใช้ประตูด้านข้าง

dai khrap tae lang hok mong tong chai pratu dan khang

Yes, but after six you have to use the side door. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)

แล้วเปิดเครื่องปรับอากาศได้ไหมคะ

laeo poet khrueang prap akat dai mai kha

And may I turn on the air conditioner? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)

เปิดได้ครับ รีโมตอยู่ในลิ้นชัก

poet dai khrap rimot yu nai linchak

Yes, you may. The remote is in the drawer. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)

Common Mistakes

1. Putting permission ได้ before the event

❌ นักท่องเที่ยวได้เข้าพื้นที่นี้ค่ะ

Wrong for the intended general permission; preverbal ได้ naturally suggests realized entry rather than ‘may enter.’

✅ นักท่องเที่ยวเข้าพื้นที่นี้ได้ถึงหกโมงเย็นค่ะ

nakthongthiao khao phuenthi ni dai thueng hok mong yen kha

Tourists may enter this area until six p.m. (formal-polite rule explanation, female voice)

2. Copying English auxiliary-negation order

❌ คุณใช้ห้องนี้ได้ไม่ครับ

Incorrect—ไม่ precedes postverbal ได้ when permission or possibility is denied.

✅ วันนี้คุณใช้ห้องนี้ไม่ได้ครับ

wan ni khun chai hong ni mai dai khrap

You may not use this room today. (ordinary polite restriction, male speaker)

3. Putting a granting authority before bare ได้

❌ ครูได้เด็กเปิดประตูค่ะ

Incorrect for ‘the teacher permits the child to open the door’; bare ได้ cannot link the granting authority to the permitted participant in this order.

✅ ครูอนุญาตให้เด็กเปิดประตูได้ค่ะ

khru anuyat hai dek poet pratu dai kha

The teacher permits the child to open the door. (formal-polite explicit permission, female speaker)

4. Treating แล้ว as a past ending on ได้

❌ เมื่อวานผมจอดรถได้แล้วตรงนี้ครับ

Wrong for a simple past permission; ได้แล้ว suggests that parking has now become possible or permitted.

✅ เมื่อวานเจ้าหน้าที่อนุญาตให้ผมจอดรถตรงนี้ครับ

muea wan chao nathi anuyat hai phom chot rot trong ni khrap

Yesterday an official allowed me to park here. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • Event + ได้ can express permission when a rule or authority supplies the source, but the same order also supports ability, possibility, and success.
  • Event + ได้ไหม asks permission in suitable context; ขอ + event + ได้ไหม clearly presents a requester seeking permission.
  • ไม่ได้ V denies occurrence, while V ไม่ได้ denies possibility or permission.
  • Use อนุญาตให้ or ได้รับอนุญาตให้ in formal contexts when the granting relation must be explicit.
