Ability and Opportunity with ได้

Postverbal ได้ says that an event is available: a person has the practical ability or opportunity to do it, circumstances allow it, or an object makes it possible. เย็นนี้มาได้ can mean “can come this evening” because the schedule permits it; เปิดได้ can mean “can be opened.”

This is only one use of ได้. Position is essential: ได้คุย before the event means “got to talk/did talk,” while คุยได้ after it means “can talk.” The word never conjugates for person or tense.

The productive postverbal slot

The core frame is subject/topic + [complete event phrase] + ได้. Keep the object, direction, and close complement inside the event before ได้.

พูดภาษาไทยนิดหน่อยพูดภาษาไทยได้นิดหน่อยpractical personal ability
เปิดหน้าต่างบานนี้เปิดหน้าต่างบานนี้ได้physical possibility
ส่งแบบฟอร์มทางอีเมลส่งแบบฟอร์มทางอีเมลได้available method or permission
พักที่นี่คืนนี้พักที่นี่คืนนี้ได้situational availability

เย็นนี้ฉันไปรับคุณได้ค่ะ

yen ni chan pai rap khun dai kha

I can pick you up this evening. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; schedule permits the offer)

โทรศัพท์รุ่นนี้ถ่ายวิดีโอใต้น้ำได้ครับ

thorasap run ni thai widio tai nam dai khrap

This phone can record video underwater. (ordinary polite product explanation, male speaker; device capability)

คุณส่งแบบฟอร์มทางอีเมลได้ค่ะ

khun song baep fom thang imen dai kha

You can send the form by email. (ordinary polite service information, female speaker; available method)

English places can before its verb. Thai ability ได้ comes after the full event. It is better to learn ส่งแบบฟอร์มได้ as “the form-sending event is possible” than to rearrange an English auxiliary word by word.

💡
Build the event first, then evaluate it: เปิด + ประตูนี้ + ได้, มาช่วย + พรุ่งนี้ + ได้. Do not put ability ได้ before the event because English puts can there.

What makes the event possible?

Postverbal ได้ is broad. The source may be a person's functional ability, a free time slot, favorable circumstances, a rule, or a property of an object. Context normally makes the source clear.

ตอนนี้คุณยายอ่านตัวหนังสือเล็ก ๆ ไม่ได้ค่ะ

ton ni khun yai an tua nangsue lek lek mai dai kha

Grandma can't read small print now. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; present functional limitation)

ถ้าฝนหยุด เราเดินไปสถานีได้ครับ

tha fon yut rao doen pai sathani dai khrap

If the rain stops, we can walk to the station. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; circumstances make the option available)

ห้องนี้พักได้สามคนค่ะ

hong ni phak dai sam khon kha

This room can accommodate three people. (ordinary polite accommodation information, female speaker; room capacity)

In a question, ได้ไหม may ask about ability, practical feasibility, permission, or a request. คุณมาวันศุกร์ได้ไหม can be “Can you come Friday?” and usually asks for a real commitment about availability, not a theoretical statement about bodily ability. The reply มาได้ครับ accepts that commitment.

คุณมาช่วยวันศุกร์ได้ไหมคะ

khun ma chuai wan suk dai mai kha

Can you come help on Friday? (ordinary polite question, female speaker; availability and commitment)

มาได้ครับ ช่วงบ่ายผมว่าง

ma dai khrap chuang bai phom wang

Yes, I can. I'm free in the afternoon. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; event repeated only as much as needed)

Permission is one possible source, but it is not the whole meaning of ได้. Contexts where rules and speaker authority matter are developed on the permission page.

ได้ versus เป็น and ไหว

English can hides three useful Thai questions:

  • ขับรถเป็น — has the person learned how to drive?
  • วันนี้ขับรถได้ — is driving possible or available today?
  • คืนนี้ขับกลับไหว — can the person manage the drive under tonight's demands?

มาลีขับรถเป็นค่ะ แต่วันนี้ขับไม่ได้เพราะแขนเจ็บ

mali khap rot pen kha tae wan ni khap mai dai phro khaen chep

Mali knows how to drive, but she can't drive today because her arm hurts. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; learned skill versus current possibility)

ผมขับกลับได้ครับ แต่ต้องพักก่อนสักครู่

phom khap klap dai khrap tae tong phak kon sak khru

I can drive back, but I need to rest for a moment first. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; current possibility)

คุณเหนื่อยมาก ขับกลับไหวไหมคะ

khun nueai mak khap klap wai mai kha

You're very tired. Can you manage driving back? (ordinary polite question, female speaker; coping capacity)

Knowing how does not guarantee present opportunity, and present opportunity does not guarantee enough stamina. The three postverbal constructions profile different sources of “can.”

The broader Thai ability overview compares these three choices with formal สามารถ in one decision map.

Negation and scope

Negate ability with event phrase + ไม่ได้. Put ไม่ได้ before the event to deny that the event occurred or was realized.

เมื่อคืนฉันไม่ได้ขับรถค่ะ เพื่อนเป็นคนขับ

muea khuen chan mai dai khap rot kha phuean pen khon khap

I didn't drive last night; my friend drove. (ordinary polite narrative, female speaker; occurrence denied)

คืนนี้ฉันขับรถไม่ได้ค่ะ เพราะยาทำให้ง่วง

khuen ni chan khap rot mai dai kha phro ya tham hai nguang

I can't drive tonight because the medicine makes me drowsy. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; ability denied)

English couldn't drive can describe either nonoccurrence or inability. Thai makes you place the negative according to its scope. ยัง...ไม่ได้ after the event means “cannot yet”: ตอนนี้เปิดไฟล์ยังไม่ได้. In careful neutral order, speakers also say ตอนนี้ยังเปิดไฟล์ไม่ได้, with ยัง applying to the current inability.

ตอนนี้ยังเข้าใช้ระบบไม่ได้ครับ กำลังรอรหัสผ่าน

ton ni yang khao chai rabop mai dai khrap kamlang ro rahat phan

I still can't access the system; I'm waiting for the password. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker; present inability)

💡
Use position to protect the intended scope: ไม่ได้เปิด denies that opening occurred; เปิดไม่ได้ says opening is impossible or not permitted. English couldn't open does not preserve this distinction for you.

จะ before or after ได้ changes the frame

Compare จะ + event + ได้ with จะได้ + event:

พรุ่งนี้ผมจะมาช่วยได้ครับ

phrung ni phom cha ma chuai dai khrap

Tomorrow I'll be able to come help. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; projected ability or availability)

พรุ่งนี้ผมจะได้มาช่วยทีมใหม่ครับ

phrung ni phom cha dai ma chuai thim mai khrap

Tomorrow I'll get to come help the new team. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; anticipated opportunity)

In the first, postverbal ได้ evaluates มาช่วย. In the second, จะได้ introduces an event the subject expects to get the opportunity or result of doing. Adjacent verbs are not an English infinitive chain; their order creates different scopes.

ได้แล้ว: ability has become available

Final แล้ว can present a new ability or newly solved practical problem: เปิดได้แล้ว “can open it now.” This is not past-tense agreement on ได้.

อัปเดตโปรแกรมแล้ว ตอนนี้เปิดไฟล์ได้แล้วครับ

apdet prokraem laeo ton ni poet fai dai laeo khrap

After updating the program, I can open the file now. (ordinary polite workplace report, male speaker; newly available ability)

Actual ongoing action uses an ongoing frame instead: กำลังเปิดไฟล์อยู่ means “is opening the file.” เปิดไฟล์ได้แล้ว says the ability/problem state has changed; it does not say the opening is currently in progress.

Register and formal alternatives

Event + ได้ is neutral and extremely common in conversation, service encounters, and ordinary writing. สามารถ + event + ได้ is (formal to neutral) and common in policies, manuals, technical descriptions, and careful statements of capacity.

ผู้ใช้สามารถเปลี่ยนรหัสผ่านได้ด้วยตนเองค่ะ

phu chai samat plian rahat phan dai duai ton eng kha

Users can change their passwords themselves. (formal service instruction, female voice)

In casual conversation, เปลี่ยนรหัสผ่านเองได้ is lighter. Formal สามารถ does not make a separate “formal grammar”; it makes the capacity source explicit in a register that favors fuller wording.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

พรุ่งนี้คุณมาประชุมตอนสิบโมงได้ไหมคะ

phrung ni khun ma prachum ton sip mong dai mai kha

Can you come to the meeting at ten tomorrow? (ordinary polite workplace question, female speaker)

สิบโมงมาได้ครับ แต่ผมอยู่ได้ถึงเที่ยง

sip mong ma dai khrap tae phom yu dai thueng thiang

I can come at ten, but I can stay only until noon. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; schedule availability)

ได้ค่ะ เราน่าจะคุยจบก่อนเที่ยง

dai kha rao na cha khui chop kon thiang

That's fine. We should finish talking before noon. (ordinary polite response, female speaker)

ดีครับ งั้นเจอกันพรุ่งนี้

di khrap ngan choe kan phrung ni

Good. Then I'll see you tomorrow. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)

Common Mistakes

1. Putting ability ได้ before the event

❌ พรุ่งนี้ฉันได้มาประชุมค่ะ

Wrong for the intended ‘I can come’; preverbal ได้ favors a realized opportunity, not postverbal ability.

✅ พรุ่งนี้ฉันมาประชุมได้ค่ะ

phrung ni chan ma prachum dai kha

I can come to the meeting tomorrow. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

2. Reversing nonoccurrence and inability

❌ กุญแจหาย ผมไม่ได้เปิดประตูครับ

Wrong for the intended inability; this order primarily reports that no opening occurred.

✅ กุญแจหาย ผมเปิดประตูไม่ได้ครับ

kunchae hai phom poet pratu mai dai khrap

The key is missing, so I can't open the door. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

3. Losing the scope difference around จะ

❌ วันศุกร์ฉันจะได้มาช่วยค่ะ

Wrong for the intended ‘I'll be available to come help’; this foregrounds getting the opportunity to help.

✅ วันศุกร์ฉันจะมาช่วยได้ค่ะ เพราะเลิกงานเร็ว

wan suk chan cha ma chuai dai kha phro loek ngan reo

On Friday I'll be able to come help because I finish work early. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

4. Inserting an English infinitive marker

❌ ฉันไปได้ที่จะพบหมอค่ะ

Incorrect—Thai keeps ไปพบหมอ as an adjacent event sequence and places ability ได้ after it.

✅ บ่ายนี้ฉันไปพบหมอได้ค่ะ

bai ni chan pai phop mo dai kha

I can go see the doctor this afternoon. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • Put ability/opportunity ได้ after the complete event phrase.
  • Context identifies whether the source is functional ability, schedule, circumstances, rules, or object properties.
  • ไม่ได้ V normally denies an event; V ไม่ได้ denies its possibility, permission, or success.
  • จะ V ได้ projects ability; จะได้ V foregrounds an anticipated opportunity or result.
  • Use เป็น for learned know-how and ไหว for coping with a demand; postverbal ได้ is the broader practical-possibility frame.
