Learned Skill with เป็น

After a learnable activity, เป็น means that the subject knows how to perform it: ว่ายน้ำเป็น “know how to swim,” ขับรถเป็น “know how to drive,” ใช้ตะเกียบเป็น “know how to use chopsticks.” The ability comes from learning, practice, or acquired familiarity—not merely from having the opportunity today.

This postverbal เป็น is related in form to identity เป็น “be,” but its position and complement are different. เป็นครู places เป็น before a role; สอนเป็น places it after an activity and describes know-how. The form itself never changes.

Activity first, เป็น second

The productive frame is subject/topic + [learnable activity] + เป็น. The full activity—including its object—normally precedes เป็น.

ขับรถเกียร์ธรรมดาขับรถเกียร์ธรรมดาเป็นtrained operation

อ่านแผนที่อ่านแผนที่เป็นinterpreting a system
ทำแกงมัสมั่นทำแกงมัสมั่นเป็นlearned procedure

ลูกสาวฉันว่ายน้ำเป็นแล้วค่ะ

luk sao chan wai nam pen laeo kha

My daughter knows how to swim now. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; newly acquired skill)

พี่ชายผมขับรถเกียร์ธรรมดาเป็นครับ

phi chai phom khap rot kia thammada pen khrap

My older brother knows how to drive a manual car. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; trained skill)

คุณใช้ตะเกียบเป็นไหมคะ

khun chai takiap pen mai kha

Do you know how to use chopsticks? (ordinary polite question, female speaker; acquired technique)

💡
Put the complete skill before เป็น: อ่านแผนที่เป็น, ซ่อมจักรยานเป็น. English know how to is one translation of the whole Thai construction, not three words to insert separately.

What counts as learned know-how?

The activity should be something a person can acquire as a method, habit, or culturally familiar practice. Swimming, driving, cooking, operating equipment, speaking a language, and interpreting a map fit readily. A punctual event controlled mainly by opportunity does not.

ฉันอ่านแผนที่เป็นค่ะ แต่บางครั้งก็หลงทาง

chan an phaenthi pen kha tae bang khrang ko long thang

I know how to read a map, but I still get lost sometimes. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; skill does not guarantee every result)

เขาพูดภาษาญี่ปุ่นเป็นครับ แต่ยังพูดไม่คล่อง

khao phut phasa yipun pen khrap tae yang phut mai khlong

He knows how to speak Japanese, but he isn't fluent yet. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; acquired skill without a claim of mastery)

ผมทำแกงมัสมั่นไม่เป็นครับ ขอสูตรหน่อยได้ไหม

phom tham kaeng matsaman mai pen khrap kho sut noi dai mai

I don't know how to make massaman curry; could I have the recipe? (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

Learned เป็น does not mean expert. พูดไทยเป็น says the speaker has the know-how to speak Thai; an added degree expression such as พูดได้คล่อง “can speak fluently” evaluates performance. There is no clean universal boundary between basic skill and practical ability, so native choices can overlap. The contrast is what the speaker foregrounds.

The construction also extends to acquired habits or ways of coping in context. This extension is real but lexical: learners should build outward from common combinations rather than attach เป็น to every conceivable verb.

The reference page for เป็น separates this postverbal skill use from identity, change, and result constructions with the same word.

Skill, opportunity, and capacity are separate

Compare the same activity under three questions:

นัทขับรถเป็นครับ

nat khap rot pen khrap

Nat knows how to drive. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; learned competence)

วันนี้นัทขับรถได้ค่ะ เพราะหมออนุญาตแล้ว

wan ni nat khap rot dai kha phro mo anuyat laeo

Nat can drive today because the doctor has allowed it. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; present opportunity or permission)

นัทเหนื่อยมาก ขับต่อไหวไหมครับ

nat nueai mak khap to wai mai khrap

Nat is very tired. Can he manage driving farther? (ordinary polite question, male speaker; stamina under demand)

A person can ขับรถเป็น but วันนี้ขับไม่ได้ because no car is available, a rule forbids it, or an injury prevents it. Someone can have both skill and opportunity yet ขับต่อไม่ไหว because fatigue has reached a limit.

💡
Learn the source of “can”: เป็น = acquired know-how, ได้ = practical possibility/opportunity, ไหว = enough capacity to cope. One situation may make more than one statement true.

Negation: activity + ไม่เป็น

Place ไม่ immediately before learned-skill เป็น: ว่ายน้ำไม่เป็น, ใช้เครื่องนี้ไม่เป็น. Do not move ไม่ to an English auxiliary position before the whole event.

คุณตาผมใช้แอปนี้ไม่เป็นครับ

khun ta phom chai aep ni mai pen khrap

My grandfather doesn't know how to use this app. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; missing learned know-how)

ฉันยังอ่านโน้ตดนตรีไม่เป็นค่ะ

chan yang an not dontri mai pen kha

I still don't know how to read music. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; skill not yet acquired)

Compare identity negation ไม่ได้เป็นช่าง “is not/was not a technician” with skill negation ซ่อมเครื่องไม่เป็น “does not know how to repair the machine.” In the first, เป็น precedes a role and lies inside ไม่ได้เป็น. In the second, เป็น follows the activity.

ผมไม่ได้เป็นช่างครับ แต่ซ่อมจักรยานเป็น

phom mai dai pen chang khrap tae som chakkayan pen

I'm not a mechanic, but I know how to repair bicycles. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; identity versus learned skill)

Learning in progress versus skill attained

Learned ability is a resulting competence, so Thai normally describes the learning process with หัด or ฝึก, not by putting the completed skill frame inside กำลัง...อยู่.

ลูกกำลังหัดขี่จักรยานอยู่ค่ะ

luk kamlang hat khi chakkayan yu kha

My child is learning to ride a bicycle. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; training process under way)

ตอนนี้ลูกขี่จักรยานเป็นแล้วครับ

ton ni luk khi chakkayan pen laeo khrap

Now my child knows how to ride a bicycle. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; learned result attained)

เป็นแล้ว presents a change into the skill state. It does not conjugate เป็น as past. A future context can project the same result:

ฝึกต่ออีกหน่อย เดี๋ยวก็พิมพ์สัมผัสเป็นค่ะ

fuek to ik noi diao ko phim samphat pen kha

Practice a little more and soon you'll know how to touch-type. (ordinary polite encouragement, female speaker; projected skill acquisition)

With explicit จะ, อีกไม่นานเขาจะอ่านภาษาไทยเป็น is possible, but everyday encouragement often uses เดี๋ยวก็...เป็น. Time and prospect come from the frame; เป็น stays postverbal.

Commitment and short answers

Answering ทำเป็นไหม with เป็นครับ confirms know-how. It does not by itself promise to do the task now. To accept a practical request, add ทำให้ได้ครับ, ทำได้ครับ, or a clear commitment such as เดี๋ยวผมทำให้.

ติดตั้งเครื่องพิมพ์เป็นไหมคะ

tittang khrueang phim pen mai kha

Do you know how to install a printer? (ordinary polite workplace question, female speaker)

เป็นครับ เดี๋ยวผมติดตั้งให้

pen khrap diao phom tittang hai

Yes. I'll install it for you. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; skill confirmation followed by commitment)

The complement is omitted in เป็นครับ because the question keeps installation active. Without context, bare เป็น has many other meanings and cannot identify the skill by itself.

Register and a lexical warning

Postverbal เป็น is neutral and common in ordinary conversation. Formal policies and technical capability statements more often use สามารถ + event + ได้ (formal to neutral) or มีทักษะในการ... (formal). Those expressions describe explicit capacity or qualifications rather than replacing everyday learned-skill grammar word for word.

The string ทำเป็น can also mean “pretend” when followed by a state, as in ทำเป็นไม่รู้ “pretend not to know.” That is a separate lexical construction. Context distinguishes ทำอาหารเป็น “know how to cook” from ทำเป็นไม่สนใจ “pretend not to care.” This overlap must be learned; there is no punctuation shortcut.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

คุณใช้เครื่องชงกาแฟรุ่นนี้เป็นไหมคะ

khun chai khrueang chong kafae run ni pen mai kha

Do you know how to use this model of coffee machine? (ordinary polite workplace question, female speaker)

ยังไม่เป็นครับ รุ่นนี้ต่างจากเครื่องเก่า

yang mai pen khrap run ni tang chak khrueang kao

Not yet. This model is different from the old machine. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)

เดี๋ยวฉันสอนให้ค่ะ ใช้ไม่ยาก

diao chan son hai kha chai mai yak

I'll show you. It isn't hard to use. (ordinary polite response, female speaker)

ขอบคุณครับ ถ้าลองสองสามครั้งน่าจะทำเป็น

khopkhun khrap tha long song sam khrang na cha tham pen

Thank you. After trying it two or three times, I should know how. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; expected learned result)

Common Mistakes

1. Reversing the learned-skill order

❌ ฉันเป็นใช้ตะเกียบค่ะ

Incorrect learned-skill order—the activity precedes เป็น.

✅ ฉันใช้ตะเกียบเป็นค่ะ

chan chai takiap pen kha

I know how to use chopsticks. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

2. Using เป็น for a one-time opportunity

❌ พรุ่งนี้ผมมาประชุมเป็นครับ

Incorrect for ‘I can come tomorrow’; coming on one date depends on availability, not learned know-how.

✅ วันจันทร์ผมเข้าร่วมประชุมได้ครับ

wan chan phom khao ruam prachum dai khrap

I can attend the meeting on Monday. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

3. Making attained skill progressive

❌ ลูกกำลังขี่จักรยานเป็นอยู่ค่ะ

Incorrect for ‘is learning’; learned competence is the result, while หัด names the learning process.

✅ ตอนนี้ลูกกำลังฝึกขี่จักรยานอยู่ค่ะ

ton ni luk kamlang fuek khi chakkayan yu kha

My child is practicing riding a bicycle now. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

4. Confusing identity negation with lack of know-how

❌ ผมไม่ได้เป็นซ่อมคอมพิวเตอร์ครับ

Incorrect—identity ไม่ได้เป็น cannot introduce a skill event in this order.

✅ ผมซ่อมคอมพิวเตอร์ไม่เป็นครับ

phom som khomphiotoe mai pen khrap

I don't know how to repair computers. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • Learned skill uses complete activity + เป็น; the object stays before เป็น.
  • The construction describes acquired know-how, not necessarily expertise or success on every attempt.
  • Activity + ไม่เป็น denies know-how; identity ไม่ได้เป็น + role is a different frame.
  • Describe learning in progress with กำลังหัด/ฝึก...อยู่ and attained skill with activity + เป็นแล้ว.
  • A skill answer confirms competence, not automatically willingness, opportunity, or stamina.
