เป็น: be; become; know how

Thai เป็น has several high-frequency jobs. Before a noun or conventional condition, it can mean “be” or “become”: เป็นครู “be a teacher,” เป็นหวัด “have a cold.” After an activity, it means learned know-how: ว่ายน้ำเป็น “know how to swim.” In result expressions, it introduces the form or arrangement produced: ตัดเป็นชิ้น “cut into pieces.”

The form is always เป็น. It never changes for am, is, are, was, or will be. Thai places time, aspect, negation, participants, and neighboring predicates around this one invariant form.

Class membership and social roles

Use subject + เป็น + class/role to categorize someone or something. Professions, roles, nationalities, materials in some classifications, and types commonly occur here.

พี่สาวฉันเป็นพยาบาลค่ะ

phi sao chan pen phayaban kha

My older sister is a nurse. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)

คุณสมชายเป็นหัวหน้าทีมนี้ครับ

khun somchai pen huana thim ni khrap

Khun Somchai is the leader of this team. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

ห้องนี้เป็นห้องประชุมเล็กค่ะ

hong ni pen hong prachum lek kha

This room is a small meeting room. (ordinary polite explanation, female speaker)

English also uses be before adjectives and locations. Thai does not automatically use เป็น there: ห้องนี้เล็ก “this room is small” has a bare property predicate, and ห้องประชุมอยู่ชั้นสอง “the meeting room is on the second floor” uses locative อยู่.

💡
Before choosing เป็น for English be, identify the complement. A class or role favors เป็น; a property usually needs no copula; a location normally uses อยู่.

One form across subjects and time frames

This matrix replaces an English-style conjugation table. เป็น stays unchanged; surrounding expressions supply the interpretation.

Subject and frameThai modelInterpretation
ผม + past contextเมื่อก่อนผมเป็นครูI used to be a teacher
ฉัน + กำลังฉันกำลังเป็นห่วงแม่I am worried about Mum
เขา + แล้วตอนนี้เขาเป็นหัวหน้าแล้วhe is the supervisor now
พวกเรา + จะพวกเราจะเป็นเจ้าภาพwe will be the hosts
ผม + ไม่ได้ผมไม่ได้เป็นผู้จัดการI am not / was not the manager
ฉัน + ไม่ after activityฉันว่ายน้ำไม่เป็นI do not know how to swim
พวกเรา + เคยพวกเราเคยเป็นเพื่อนร่วมงานwe used to be coworkers

กำลัง does not naturally make every stable identity progressive. The established state เป็นห่วง “be concerned” accepts กำลัง; a simple profession normally uses context, เคย, จะ, or แล้ว instead.

เมื่อก่อนผมเป็นครูที่เชียงรายครับ

muea kon phom pen khru thi chiang rai khrap

I used to be a teacher in Chiang Rai. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

ปีหน้าพวกเราจะเป็นเจ้าภาพจัดการประชุมค่ะ

pi na phuak rao cha pen chaophap chat kan prachum kha

Next year we will host the meeting. (formal-polite report, female speaker; literally ‘be the hosts organizing the meeting’)

Becoming and reaching a new status

With a new time frame or แล้ว, เป็น can present a role or status as newly attained. When the change itself must be explicit, Thai often adds กลายเป็น “become,” เปลี่ยนเป็น “change into,” or a causing frame with ทำให้...เป็น....

ตอนนี้น้องชายเป็นหมอแล้วครับ

ton ni nong chai pen mo laeo khrap

My younger brother is a doctor now. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; newly relevant status)

น้ำในช่องแช่แข็งกลายเป็นน้ำแข็งแล้วค่ะ

nam nai chong chae khaeng klai pen namkhaeng laeo kha

The water in the freezer has turned into ice. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)

เราจะเปลี่ยนห้องนี้เป็นพื้นที่ทำงานครับ

rao cha plian hong ni pen phuenthi tham ngan khrap

We will turn this room into a workspace. (ordinary polite plan, male speaker)

The noun after เป็น names the resulting category. แล้ว signals the attained or newly relevant state; it is not a past ending on เป็น.

Conditions and common collocations

Several everyday conditions form conventional เป็น + noun/state expressions. Learn them as whole frames.

CollocationMeaningRegister or use
เป็นหวัดhave a coldordinary
เป็นไข้have a fever / be feverishordinary
เป็นห่วงbe worried or concerned aboutordinary
เป็นไปได้be possibleneutral
เป็นประจำregularly / habituallyneutral
ไม่เป็นไรbe all right; no problemordinary fixed response

วันนี้ลูกเป็นไข้ ขอหยุดเรียนหนึ่งวันค่ะ

wan ni luk pen khai kho yut rian nueng wan kha

My child has a fever today, so I'd like them to miss school for one day. (ordinary polite explanation, female speaker)

แม่กำลังเป็นห่วงคุณยายอยู่ครับ

mae kamlang pen huang khun yai yu khrap

Mum is worried about Grandma. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

ถ้าส่งวันนี้ก็น่าจะเป็นไปได้ค่ะ

tha song wan ni ko na cha pen pai dai kha

If we send it today, it should be possible. (ordinary polite assessment, female speaker)

These are not freely constructed translations of English be. For example, เป็นห่วง selects the person or matter worried about directly, while เป็นไปได้ is an established possibility expression.

Learned ability: activity + เป็น

After an activity, เป็น means that the subject has learned how to perform it. The order is activity + เป็น, not เป็น + activity.

ฉันว่ายน้ำเป็นค่ะ แต่ยังว่ายไม่เร็ว

chan wai nam pen kha tae yang wai mai reo

I know how to swim, but I still don't swim fast. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)

เขาขับรถเกียร์ธรรมดาเป็นครับ

khao khap rot kia thammada pen khrap

He knows how to drive a manual-transmission car. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

ผมทำแกงเขียวหวานไม่เป็นครับ

phom tham kaeng khiao wan mai pen khrap

I don't know how to make green curry. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

This is learned competence, not every kind of ability. ยกกล่องนี้ไหว concerns physical capacity; เปิดไฟล์ได้ can concern possibility or successful performance. See learned ability with เป็น.

💡
With a skill, locate เป็น after the complete activity: ทำอาหารเป็น, ขับรถเป็น, พูดไทยเป็น. Negate the learned ability with activity + ไม่เป็น.

Resulting form and arrangement

After an action and affected item, เป็น + result noun describes the form produced.

ช่วยหั่นแตงกวาเป็นชิ้นบาง ๆ ค่ะ

chuai han taengkwa pen chin bang bang kha

Please slice the cucumber into thin pieces. (ordinary polite request, female speaker)

เด็ก ๆ นั่งเป็นวงบนพื้นครับ

dek dek nang pen wong bon phuen khrap

The children are sitting in a circle on the floor. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

Here เป็นชิ้น and เป็นวง name a result or arrangement. They are not identity statements and should be learned with their preceding predicates.

Negation and recoverable complements

Negation depends on the frame. activity + ไม่เป็น denies learned know-how. ไม่ได้เป็น + role denies occupying a role in the relevant situation. ไม่เป็นอะไร and ไม่เป็นไร are conventional reassurance expressions.

ผมไม่ได้เป็นคนอนุมัติเรื่องนี้ครับ

phom mai dai pen khon anumat rueang ni khrap

I'm not the person who approved this matter. (ordinary polite correction, male speaker)

ล้มแรงไหมคะ เป็นอะไรหรือเปล่า

lom raeng mai kha pen arai rue plao

Did you fall hard? Are you hurt? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)

ไม่เป็นไรครับ แค่เข่าถลอกนิดหน่อย

mai pen rai khrap khae khao thalok nit noi

I'm all right; I only scraped my knee a little. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)

Once a role is active, its complement can be omitted: เคยเป็นหัวหน้าไหม — เคยเป็นครับ “Have you ever been a supervisor? — Yes, I have.” The short answer remains dependent on its question.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

คุณทำอาหารไทยเป็นไหมคะ

khun tham ahan thai pen mai kha

Do you know how to cook Thai food? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)

เป็นครับ แต่ทำได้แค่สองสามอย่าง

pen khrap tae tham dai khae song sam yang

Yes, but I can make only two or three dishes. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)

แกงเขียวหวานทำเป็นไหมคะ

kaeng khiao wan tham pen mai kha

Do you know how to make green curry? (ordinary polite follow-up, female speaker)

ยังไม่เป็นครับ ขอสูตรหน่อยได้ไหม

yang mai pen khrap kho sut noi dai mai

Not yet. Could I have the recipe? (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)

Common Mistakes

1. Putting เป็น before a property predicate

❌ วันนี้อากาศเป็นร้อนค่ะ

Incorrect—ร้อน predicates directly; it is not a noun class.

✅ วันนี้อากาศร้อนมากค่ะ

wan ni akat ron mak kha

It is very hot today. (ordinary polite statement, female speaker)

2. Using เป็น for location

❌ กุญแจเป็นบนโต๊ะครับ

Incorrect—physical location uses อยู่.

✅ กุญแจอยู่บนโต๊ะครับ

kunchae yu bon to khrap

The key is on the table. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

3. Reversing the learned-skill frame

❌ ฉันเป็นว่ายน้ำค่ะ

Incorrect order for learned ability.

✅ ฉันว่ายน้ำเป็นค่ะ

chan wai nam pen kha

I know how to swim. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)

4. Treating แล้ว as a conjugated part of เป็น

❌ ตอนนี้เขาเป็นแล้วหัวหน้าครับ

Incorrect order—แล้ว follows the completed role phrase.

✅ ตอนนี้เขาเป็นหัวหน้าแล้วครับ

ton ni khao pen huana laeo khrap

He is the supervisor now. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

5. Using เป็น as an infinitive marker

❌ พรุ่งนี้ผมจะเป็นไปทำงานครับ

Incorrect—เป็น does not mean English infinitive ‘to.’

✅ พรุ่งนี้ผมจะไปทำงานครับ

phrung ni phom cha pai tham ngan khrap

Tomorrow I will go to work. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • เป็น + noun/class categorizes; it is not the copula for every English be sentence.
  • Time and aspect surround unchanged เป็น: เคยเป็น, จะเป็น, เป็น...แล้ว.
  • Learned skill uses activity + เป็น and negative activity + ไม่เป็น.
  • กลายเป็น, เปลี่ยน...เป็น..., and action + เป็น frames make change or result explicit.
  • Frequent expressions such as เป็นหวัด, เป็นห่วง, เป็นไปได้, and ไม่เป็นไร are lexical collocations.
