เป็น does much more than link a person to a role. It appears in conventional combinations such as เป็นห่วง “be worried,” เป็นประโยชน์ “be useful,” and เป็นส่วนหนึ่ง “be part of.” These combinations must be learned as frames: English be does not predict where Thai uses เป็น, because ordinary Thai property predicates usually need no copula.
For the complete lexical and grammatical range of the verb, see the เป็น reference; this page concentrates on combinations best stored as units.
Three kinds of combination
The complement after เป็น can classify something, name a conventional condition, or describe a resulting role/form. The boundary is not always perfectly logical; frequency has made some combinations lexical.
| Frame | Meaning | Common complements |
|---|---|---|
| subject + เป็น + class/role | belong to a category | สมาชิก, ตัวอย่าง, สาเหตุ |
| subject + เป็น + fixed condition | experience a conventional state | ห่วง, ไข้, หวัด, ลม |
| เป็น + abstract expression | evaluate or relate | ประโยชน์ต่อ, อันตรายต่อ, ที่รู้จัก |
| verb + เป็น + form/group | resulting arrangement | วง, แถว, กลุ่ม, ชิ้น |
For ordinary class membership, the noun follows เป็น directly. Thai does not insert an article.
โครงการนี้เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของแผนพัฒนาชุมชนครับ
khrongkan ni pen suan nueng khong phaen phatthana chumchon khrap
This project is part of the community-development plan. (formal-neutral statement, male voice)
ข้อผิดพลาดนี้เป็นสาเหตุหลักของปัญหาค่ะ
kho phit phlat ni pen sahet lak khong panha kha
This error is the main cause of the problem. (formal-neutral explanation, female voice)
Conventional conditions and attitudes
เป็นห่วง + person/matter means “be worried or concerned about.” The experiencer is the subject and the concern follows the collocation. เป็นไข้, เป็นหวัด, and เป็นลม name conventional health conditions; they do not establish a general rule that every adjective takes เป็น.
พ่อเป็นห่วงน้องที่ต้องขับรถกลับดึก ๆ ครับ
pho pen huang nong thi tong khap rot klap duek duek khrap
Dad is worried about my younger sibling having to drive home late. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
ลูกเป็นไข้ตั้งแต่เมื่อคืนค่ะ วันนี้ขอลาหยุดนะคะ
luk pen khai tangtae muea khuen kha wan ni kho la yut na kha
My child has had a fever since last night. May I take today off? (ordinary polite request, female speaker)
Compare a conventional condition with a direct property predicate:
หลังเดินตากฝน เขาเป็นหวัดค่ะ
lang doen tak fon khao pen wat kha
After walking in the rain, she caught a cold. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
หลังเดินตากฝน เขาหนาวมากค่ะ
lang doen tak fon khao nao mak kha
After walking in the rain, she was very cold. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
หนาว predicates directly. There is no productive “เป็น + adjective” template corresponding to English be + adjective.
Evaluation and relation frames
Formal and professional Thai frequently uses เป็นประโยชน์ต่อ “be beneficial to,” เป็นอันตรายต่อ “be harmful to,” เป็นที่รู้จัก “be known,” and เป็นไปได้ “be possible.” Their following complements are conventional too.
ข้อมูลชุดนี้เป็นประโยชน์ต่อการวางแผนระยะยาวค่ะ
khomun chut ni pen prayot to kan wang phaen raya yao kha
This data set is useful for long-term planning. (formal professional statement, female voice)
ควันจากการเผาขยะเป็นอันตรายต่อสุขภาพครับ
khwan chak kan phao khaya pen antarai to sukkhaphap khrap
Smoke from burning waste is harmful to health. (formal public information, male voice)
ร้านเล็ก ๆ แห่งนี้เป็นที่รู้จักในหมู่นักปั่นจักรยานค่ะ
ran lek lek haeng ni pen thi ru chak nai mu nak pan chakkrayan kha
This small shop is well known among cyclists. (neutral informational statement, female voice)
ถ้าลดขอบเขตงานลง ส่งภายในวันศุกร์ก็น่าจะเป็นไปได้ครับ
tha lot khopkhet ngan long song phainai wan suk ko na cha pen pai dai khrap
If we reduce the scope, delivering by Friday should be possible. (ordinary polite assessment, male speaker)
These are not tense forms. เป็น remains invariant; time and modality come from ถ้า, น่าจะ, time phrases, and discourse.
Social manner and organization
เป็นกันเอง means relaxed and approachable rather than ceremonious. เป็นระเบียบ means orderly; เป็นธรรม means fair; เป็นทางการ means formal. Some look analyzable, but their conventional meanings and complements deserve memorization.
หัวหน้าคนใหม่เป็นกันเอง แต่ทำงานเป็นระบบมากค่ะ
hua na khon mai pen kan eng tae tham ngan pen rabop mak kha
The new supervisor is approachable but works very systematically. (ordinary polite assessment, female speaker)
ช่วยจัดเอกสารให้เป็นระเบียบก่อนลูกค้ามานะครับ
chuai chat ekkasan hai pen rabiap kon luk kha ma na khrap
Please organize the documents before the customer arrives. (ordinary polite request, male speaker)
Here ให้เป็นระเบียบ is result-oriented: arrange the documents so that the resulting state is orderly.
Resulting form and productive slots
After an action, เป็น + unit/form describes the result. This frame is productive, but the noun must name a plausible shape, grouping, or division.
พนักงานแบ่งผู้เข้าร่วมเป็นสามกลุ่มค่ะ
phanakngan baeng phu khao ruam pen sam klum kha
The staff divided the participants into three groups. (formal-neutral report, female voice)
ช่วยตัดกระดาษแผ่นนี้เป็นสี่ส่วนเท่า ๆ กันครับ
chuai tat kradat phaen ni pen si suan thao thao kan khrap
Please cut this sheet of paper into four equal parts. (ordinary polite request, male speaker)
The classifier stays inside the relevant noun phrase: กระดาษแผ่นนี้, สามกลุ่ม. เป็น itself does not mark singular, plural, or result agreement.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
คุณคิดว่าแผนนี้เป็นไปได้ไหมคะ
khun khit wa phaen ni pen pai dai mai kha
Do you think this plan is feasible? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
เป็นไปได้ครับ ถ้าแบ่งงานเป็นสองส่วน
pen pai dai khrap tha baeng ngan pen song suan
It is feasible if we divide the work into two parts. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
ส่วนแรกให้ทีมขายทำ ส่วนที่สองให้ฝ่ายบัญชีดีไหมคะ
suan raek hai thim khai tham suan thi song hai fai banchi di mai kha
How about assigning the first part to Sales and the second to Accounting? (ordinary polite proposal, female speaker)
ดีครับ แบบนี้น่าจะเป็นระบบมากขึ้น
di khrap baep ni na cha pen rabop mak khuen
Good. This should make it more systematic. (ordinary polite agreement, male speaker)
Common Mistakes
1. Adding เป็น before a direct property
❌ วันนี้อากาศเป็นเย็นค่ะ
Incorrect—เย็น is already a property predicate.
✅ วันนี้อากาศเย็นสบายค่ะ
wan ni akat yen sabai kha
The weather is pleasantly cool today. (ordinary polite statement, female speaker)
2. Omitting the conventional relator ต่อ
❌ การนอนพอเป็นประโยชน์สุขภาพครับ
Incorrect conventional frame—เป็นประโยชน์ takes ต่อ before the affected domain.
✅ การนอนให้พอเป็นประโยชน์ต่อสุขภาพครับ
kan non hai pho pen prayot to sukkhaphap khrap
Getting enough sleep is beneficial to health. (formal-neutral statement, male voice)
3. Reversing learned ability
❌ ผมเป็นขับรถครับ
Incorrect order for learned know-how.
✅ ผมขับรถเป็นครับ
phom khap rot pen khrap
I know how to drive. (ordinary polite statement, male speaker)
4. Dropping เป็น from a fixed possibility expression
❌ ส่งพรุ่งนี้ไปได้ครับ
Wrong for intended ‘is possible’; ไปได้ instead describes ability or possibility of going.
✅ ถ้าจะส่งพรุ่งนี้ก็เป็นไปได้ครับ แต่ต้องยืนยันวันนี้
tha cha song phrung ni ko pen pai dai khrap tae tong yuenyan wan ni
Delivery tomorrow is possible, but it must be confirmed today. (ordinary polite explanation, male speaker)
Key Takeaways
- เป็น combines with class nouns, conventional conditions, established evaluations, and resulting forms.
- Direct Thai properties such as ร้อน, หนาว, and แพง do not take a copula.
- Memorize the whole frame, including required relators: เป็นประโยชน์ต่อ, เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของ.
- The verb never inflects; order, time words, particles, and context supply the rest.
