In collocations such as ทำความสะอาด “clean,” มีปัญหา “have a problem,” and ให้คำแนะนำ “give advice,” a high-frequency verb combines with a noun-like expression to form one conventional predicate. The verbs ทำ, มี, and ให้ still contribute “perform/make,” “have/exist,” and “provide,” but much of the specific event or state comes from the following expression.
These combinations are called light-verb collocations because the verb carries less specific lexical content than it does in ทำโต๊ะ “make a table,” มีรถ “own a car,” or ให้เงินน้อง “give a younger sibling money.” The boundary is a matter of degree, and the combinations are lexically established. Learners cannot freely attach any noun to whichever verb matches English do, have, or give.
Three families, learned as combinations
| Light verb | Established combination | Core meaning | Register note |
|---|---|---|---|
| ทำ | ทำงาน | work | ordinary |
| ทำ | ทำการบ้าน | do homework | ordinary |
| ทำ | ทำความสะอาด | clean | ordinary |
| มี | มีปัญหา | have a problem | ordinary |
| มี | มีโอกาส | have an opportunity | ordinary to formal |
| มี | มีความสุข | be happy | ordinary |
| ให้ | ให้คำแนะนำ | give advice | ordinary to formal |
| ให้ | ให้บริการ | provide service | service/business |
| ให้ | ให้ความร่วมมือ | cooperate | formal/institutional |
The table is a starting inventory, not a license to replace the noun in any row. The conventional pairing determines what sounds natural.
ทำ: performing an established activity
In a light use, ทำ supplies an event frame while the following element identifies the activity. Some combinations are extremely ordinary; others with ทำการ + verb belong mainly to (formal) administrative or technical prose.
คืนนี้ผมต้องทำการบ้านให้เสร็จก่อนนอนครับ
khuen ni phom tong tham kanban hai set kon non khrap
I have to finish my homework before bed tonight. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
แม่กำลังทำความสะอาดครัวอยู่ค่ะ
mae kamlang tham khwam sa at khrua yu kha
Mum is cleaning the kitchen. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
ก่อนเซ็นสัญญา กรุณาทำความเข้าใจเงื่อนไขให้ครบถ้วนครับ
kon sen sanya karuna tham khwam khao chai ngueankhai hai khrop thuan khrap
Before signing, please make sure you understand all the conditions. (formal-polite instruction, male speaker)
ทำความเข้าใจ is conventional; its meaning is not calculated by translating each piece as “make abstract understanding.” ความ helps package a property or mental content as a noun-like expression, but it cannot be prefixed to any word at will. See property nominalization.
เจ้าหน้าที่จะทำการตรวจสอบเอกสารภายในวันนี้ครับ
chaonathi cha tham kan truat sop ekkasan phai nai wan ni khrap
The officer will inspect the documents today. (formal administrative style, male speaker)
In ordinary conversation, เจ้าหน้าที่จะตรวจสอบเอกสารวันนี้ is lighter and usually preferable. ทำการตรวจสอบ is grammatical (formal/bureaucratic) wording; it should not be taught as a required tense or as a more correct version of ตรวจสอบ.
มี: possessing a state, opportunity, or issue
With abstract nouns, มี presents a person or situation as possessing a state, resource, or circumstance. It remains different from property predicates that need no copula or “have.”
ช่วงนี้ครอบครัวเรามีความสุขมากค่ะ
chuang ni khropkhrua rao mi khwam suk mak kha
Our family is very happy these days. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
ตอนนี้ทีมมีปัญหาเรื่องงบประมาณครับ
ton ni thim mi panha rueang ngoppraman khrap
The team currently has a budget problem. (ordinary polite workplace report, male speaker)
นักศึกษามีโอกาสฝึกงานกับบริษัทชั้นนำค่ะ
naksueksa mi okat fuek ngan kap borisat chan nam kha
Students have an opportunity to intern with a leading company. (informational, female speaker)
Negation forms ไม่มี + noun-like expression. House-style RTGS segments its transparent parts as mai mi, even though Thai writes ไม่มี continuously.
ตอนนำเสนอครั้งแรก ผมยังไม่มีความมั่นใจครับ
ton nam sanoe khrang raek phom yang mai mi khwam manchai khrap
During my first presentation, I still lacked confidence. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
Do not generalize มี to every English be/have phrase. Thai says ผมหิว “I am hungry,” not ผมมีหิว. The following nominal must participate in an established มี frame.
ให้: providing an abstract good or service
Light ให้ commonly combines with nouns for advice, assistance, service, attention, opportunities, or cooperation. It profiles provision to another participant, even when that recipient is omitted because the setting identifies them.
หัวหน้าให้คำแนะนำเรื่องการสัมภาษณ์อย่างละเอียดมากครับ
huana hai kham naenam rueang kan samphat yang laiat mak khrap
The supervisor gave very detailed advice about the interview. (ordinary polite workplace report, male speaker)
โรงแรมให้บริการรับส่งสนามบินค่ะ
rongraem hai borikan rap song sanambin kha
The hotel provides an airport transfer service. (service/business register, female speaker)
ทุกฝ่ายให้ความร่วมมือในการตรวจสอบเป็นอย่างดีครับ
thuk fai hai khwam ruammue nai kan truat sop pen yang di khrap
All parties cooperated fully with the investigation. (formal institutional report, male speaker)
The ordinary verb ช่วย may be more natural than ให้ความช่วยเหลือ in casual conversation. The longer form is (formal) and common in reports, public communication, and institutional requests.
เพื่อนบ้านช่วยยกของเข้าบ้านให้ค่ะ
phuean ban chuai yok khong khao ban hai kha
A neighbor helped carry the things into the house for me. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
หน่วยงานให้ความช่วยเหลือผู้ประสบภัยทันทีค่ะ
nuai ngan hai khwam chuai luea phu prasop phai thanthi kha
The agency provided immediate assistance to the disaster victims. (formal news/institutional register, female voice)
The two targets describe related acts in different registers; they are not word-for-word stylistic substitutes in every syntactic environment.
Valency and omission remain lexical
The collocation as a whole determines its participants. ทำความสะอาด can take the place or object cleaned. ให้คำแนะนำ can identify content with เรื่อง and a recipient from context. มีปัญหา can add the problematic domain with เรื่อง. These are not identical frames merely because the first verb is common.
พรุ่งนี้บริษัทจะให้คำแนะนำผู้สมัครเป็นรายคนค่ะ
phrung ni borisat cha hai kham naenam phusamak pen rai khon kha
Tomorrow the company will advise applicants individually. (formal-polite information, female speaker)
ให้คำแนะนำแล้วครับ แต่เขาขอเวลาคิดก่อน
hai kham naenam laeo khrap tae khao kho wela khit kon
I've given the advice, but they asked for time to think. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; adviser and recipient are recoverable)
The second target omits both participants because the discourse supplies them. Without that context, it would be unclear who advised whom.
Negation, time, and aspect
Light verbs remain unchanged. Negation and aspect occur in ordinary predicate positions.
ผมยังไม่ได้ทำความสะอาดห้องเก็บของครับ
phom yang mai dai tham khwam sa at hong kep khong khrap
I haven't cleaned the storage room yet. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
เดือนหน้าร้านจะไม่ให้บริการจัดส่งวันอาทิตย์ค่ะ
duean na ran cha mai hai borikan chat song wan athit kha
Next month the shop will not offer delivery on Sundays. (service information, female speaker)
ไม่ได้ทำความสะอาด denies completion or occurrence of the cleaning event in context. จะไม่ให้บริการ places negation inside a prospective policy. No verb is conjugated, and แล้ว does not independently equal an English past tense.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
Two coworkers discuss a draft report:
รายงานส่วนนี้มีปัญหาตรงไหนคะ
raingan suan ni mi panha trong nai kha
Where is the problem in this part of the report? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
ตัวเลขยังไม่ตรงครับ ช่วยตรวจสอบอีกครั้งได้ไหมครับ
tua lek yang mai trong khrap chuai truat sop ik khrang dai mai khrap
The figures still do not match. Could you check them again? (ordinary polite request, male speaker)
ได้ค่ะ เดี๋ยวแก้แล้วส่งให้ก่อนเที่ยง
dai kha diao kae laeo song hai kon thiang
Sure. I'll correct it and send it to you before noon. (ordinary polite reply, female speaker)
ขอบคุณครับ ถ้ามีปัญหาเพิ่มบอกผมได้เลย
khopkhun khrap tha mi panha phoem bok phom dai loei
Thank you. If there are any more problems, just tell me. (ordinary polite, male speaker)
Common Mistakes
1. Using ทำ for every English “do/make” collocation
❌ เมื่อวานฉันทำรูปที่ตลาดค่ะ
Wrong for the intended meaning ‘took photos’—Thai selects a different lexical verb.
✅ เมื่อวานฉันถ่ายรูปที่ตลาดค่ะ
muea wan chan thai rup thi talat kha
I took photos at the market yesterday. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
2. Using มี before a property predicate
❌ พออยู่ในห้องแอร์ ผมก็มีหนาวครับ
Incorrect—หนาว is already a bodily-state predicate.
✅ พออยู่ในห้องแอร์ ผมก็หนาวครับ
pho yu nai hong ae phom ko nao khrap
I get cold in an air-conditioned room. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
3. Choosing the wrong light verb for a conventional noun
❌ หัวหน้าทำคำแนะนำให้ผมครับ
Incorrect collocation for ‘gave me advice.’
✅ หัวหน้าให้คำแนะนำผมครับ
huana hai kham naenam phom khrap
The supervisor gave me advice. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
4. Creating a new ความ expression mechanically
❌ วันนี้ฉันอยากทำความนอนเร็วค่ะ
Incorrect—ความ cannot turn every verb into a light-verb collocation.
✅ วันนี้ฉันอยากนอนเร็วค่ะ
wan ni chan yak non reo kha
I want to go to bed early today. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
5. Splitting negation inside a fixed collocation
❌ ผมทำไม่ได้ความสะอาดห้องครับ
Incorrect order for denying the cleaning event.
✅ ผมไม่ได้ทำความสะอาดห้องครับ
phom mai dai tham khwam sa at hong khrap
I didn't clean the room. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
Key Takeaways
- ทำ, มี, and ให้ form conventional predicates with particular noun-like expressions.
- Productivity is limited: learn ทำความสะอาด, มีปัญหา, and ให้คำแนะนำ as combinations with their frames.
- Full lexical and light uses form a continuum; a neat boundary is not always possible.
- Longer variants such as ทำการตรวจสอบ and ให้ความช่วยเหลือ often carry formal or institutional register.
- Omission, negation, time, and aspect apply to the collocation in context; none creates verb conjugation.
