Thai work and study talk uses stable lexical frames: ทำงานที่… “work at…,” ทำงานเป็น… “work as…,” เรียน…อยู่ “be studying…,” เข้าเรียน/เข้างานกี่โมง “what time does class/work start for you?”, and ต้องส่งงานเมื่อไร “when is the work due?”
The verbs remain unchanged across people and times. Place, role, routine, current activity, and deadlines are expressed by order, time phrases, aspect markers, and context. Once the workplace, course, or assignment is active, Thai often omits repeated subjects and objects.
Workplaces, roles, and fields of study
Different complements answer different questions. ทำงานที่ + place identifies a workplace; ทำงานเป็น + role identifies a job role. เรียนที่ + institution gives a place of study, while เรียน + subject names what someone studies.
| Fixed frame | Substitutable slot | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| ทำงานที่ _ | company, school, hospital | work at a place |
| ทำงานเป็น _ | teacher, designer, accountant | work as a role |
| ทำงานด้าน _ | finance, sales, technology | work in a field |
| เรียนที่ _ | school, university, institute | study at an institution |
| เรียน _ | Thai, engineering, history | study a subject |
| เรียนอยู่ชั้น/ปี _ | grade or university year | state current level |
ผมทำงานที่บริษัทขนส่งครับ
phom tham ngan thi borisat khonsong khrap
I work at a transport company. (ordinary-polite workplace statement, male speaker)
ฉันทำงานเป็นนักออกแบบค่ะ
chan tham ngan pen nak ok baep kha
I work as a designer. (ordinary-polite role statement, female speaker)
น้องเรียนวิศวกรรมที่มหาวิทยาลัยเชียงใหม่ครับ
nong rian witsawakam thi mahawitthayalai chiang mai khrap
My younger sibling studies engineering at Chiang Mai University. (ordinary-polite statement, male speaker)
เป็น introduces the professional identity นักออกแบบ; it is not placed before ทำงาน or เรียน as a general English be. Thai also uses no indefinite article before occupations. See identity with เป็น.
Daily schedules
เข้าเรียน means attend or enter class, เข้างาน means start/report for work, and เลิกเรียน/เลิกงาน means finish the school or work period. Clock time follows the predicate.
ปกติคุณเข้างานกี่โมงคะ
pokkati khun khao ngan ki mong kha
What time do you normally start work? (ordinary-polite routine question, female speaker)
ผมทำงานตั้งแต่เก้าโมงถึงห้าโมงเย็นครับ
phom tham ngan tangtae kao mong thueng ha mong yen khrap
I work from nine until five p.m. (ordinary-polite schedule statement, male speaker)
วันพุธฉันมีเรียนสองคาบค่ะ
wan phut chan mi rian song khap kha
I have two class periods on Wednesday. (ordinary-polite schedule statement, female speaker; คาบ counts class periods)
วันนี้เลิกเรียนเร็วกว่าปกติครับ
wan ni loek rian reo kwa pokkati khrap
Classes finish earlier than usual today. (ordinary-polite update, male speaker; subject omitted as the school day is active)
ตั้งแต่…ถึง… gives schedule boundaries. It does not conjugate ทำงาน into a habitual present. ปกติ, recurring weekdays, or an established schedule supplies the routine reading. The habituality guide explains how frequency creates habits without verb inflection.
Routine versus activity in progress
A bare predicate with a recurring frame describes a routine. กำลัง…อยู่ places the listener inside an event happening at a reference time.
ทุกเช้าฉันอ่านบทเรียนก่อนเข้าเรียนค่ะ
thuk chao chan an bot rian kon khao rian kha
Every morning I read the lesson before class. (ordinary-polite study routine, female speaker)
ตอนนี้ฉันกำลังอ่านบทเรียนอยู่ค่ะ
ton ni chan kamlang an bot rian yu kha
I'm reading the lesson right now. (ordinary-polite current activity, female speaker)
The first is repeated because of ทุกเช้า. The second is ongoing because ตอนนี้ and กำลัง…อยู่ create an internal view. English uses different verb forms; Thai keeps อ่าน unchanged.
ช่วงสอบผมอ่านหนังสือถึงเที่ยงคืนเกือบทุกวันครับ
chuang sop phom an nangsue thueng thiang khuen kueap thuk wan khrap
During exam periods I study until midnight almost every day. (ordinary-polite routine, male speaker)
อ่านหนังสือ can mean read books or study, depending on context. In an exam frame, “study” is natural. This is a collocational interpretation, not a special conjugation of อ่าน.
Assignments, deadlines, and progress
Common formulas include มีงานต้องทำ “have work to do,” ต้องส่งงานภายใน… “must submit the work by…,” ทำเสร็จแล้ว “have finished it,” and ยังทำไม่เสร็จ “have not finished it yet.”
| Task frame | Productive replacement | Contribution |
|---|---|---|
| ต้องส่ง _ เมื่อไร | report, homework, form | ask the deadline |
| ส่งภายใน _ | day, date, clock time | state the latest allowed boundary |
| ทำ _ เสร็จแล้ว | task | report completion |
| ยังทำ _ ไม่เสร็จ | task | report an unfinished task |
| ขอเวลาเพิ่มอีก _ | duration | request an extension |
รายงานนี้ต้องส่งภายในวันศุกร์ค่ะ
raingan ni tong song phainai wan suk kha
This report must be submitted by Friday. (formal-polite deadline statement, female speaker)
ผมทำส่วนแรกเสร็จแล้ว แต่ยังไม่ได้ตรวจคำตอบครับ
phom tham suan raek set laeo tae yang mai dai truat kham top khrap
I've finished the first part, but I haven't checked the answers yet. (ordinary-polite progress report, male speaker)
ขอเวลาเพิ่มอีกสองวันได้ไหมคะ
kho wela phoem ik song wan dai mai kha
Could I have two more days? (ordinary-polite extension request, female speaker)
ภายในวันศุกร์ establishes a deadline boundary, while อีกสองวัน is a duration added to the available time. แล้ว marks an attained task stage; ยังไม่ได้ตรวจ says checking has not yet occurred. None is a past-tense ending.
Assignments use different counting units depending on what is individuated: รายงานสองฉบับ counts documents, งานสามชิ้น counts pieces of work, and แบบฝึกหัดสิบข้อ counts exercise items. There is no general article or classifier that works for every task.
Asking for help and clarification
Natural work and study requests often use ช่วย…หน่อย, ขอถาม…, or ไม่เข้าใจตรงนี้. หน่อย softens a manageable request; ได้ไหม asks whether it is possible or acceptable.
ช่วยอธิบายข้อนี้อีกครั้งได้ไหมครับ
chuai athibai kho ni ik khrang dai mai khrap
Could you explain this item again? (ordinary-polite study request, male speaker)
ขอถามเรื่องกำหนดส่งงานหน่อยค่ะ
kho tham rueang kamnot song ngan noi kha
May I ask about the assignment deadline? (ordinary-polite question opening, female speaker)
In ข้อนี้, ข้อ packages the exercise item; in อีกครั้ง, ครั้ง counts the repeated explaining occasion. The classifier belongs to what is counted, not to politeness.
Casual and formal workplace choices
Friends may say งานยุ่งมาก, การบ้านเยอะ, or อ่านไม่ทัน without pronouns or polite endings (informal). With a supervisor or instructor, a reason plus a request is more appropriate: งานส่วนนี้ยังไม่เสร็จครับ ขอส่งพรุ่งนี้เช้าได้ไหมครับ.
ทำงาน is neutral everyday “work.” Formal documents may use ปฏิบัติงาน (formal) for perform duties and ดำเนินการ (formal) for carry out an operation. These are register choices, not separate formal grammar.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
A female student asks a male instructor about an assignment.
อาจารย์คะ รายงานกลุ่มต้องส่งวันไหนคะ
achan kha raingan klum tong song wan nai kha
Professor, which day is the group report due? (ordinary-polite question, female student)
ส่งวันจันทร์ก่อนเที่ยงครับ
song wan chan kon thiang khrap
Submit it Monday before noon. (ordinary-polite reply, male instructor; known report omitted)
ส่งทางอีเมลได้ไหมคะ หรือว่าต้องส่งในห้องเรียน
song thang imel dai mai kha rue wa tong song nai hong rian
Can we submit it by email, or does it have to be submitted in class? (ordinary-polite alternative question, female student)
ส่งทางอีเมลได้ครับ แล้วเก็บไฟล์ต้นฉบับไว้ด้วย
song thang imel dai khrap laeo kep fai tonchabap wai duai
You can submit it by email. Keep the original file too. (ordinary-polite reply, male instructor)
Common Mistakes
1. Using one frame for workplace and occupation
❌ ผมทำงานที่นักบัญชีครับ
Incorrect for a job role—ที่ introduces a workplace, while เป็น introduces occupational identity.
✅ ผมทำงานเป็นนักบัญชีที่โรงแรมครับ
phom tham ngan pen nak banchi thi rongraem khrap
I work as an accountant at a hotel. (ordinary-polite role and workplace statement, male speaker)
2. Adding เป็น before an activity
❌ ตอนนี้ฉันเป็นเรียนภาษาไทยค่ะ
Incorrect—เรียน is already the activity predicate; เป็น is not a progressive copula.
✅ ตอนนี้ฉันกำลังเรียนภาษาไทยอยู่ค่ะ
ton ni chan kamlang rian phasa thai yu kha
I'm studying Thai right now. (ordinary-polite current activity, female speaker)
3. Reversing a schedule boundary
❌ ฉันเรียนถึงเก้าโมงตั้งแต่เที่ยงค่ะ
Incorrect neutral order for ‘from noon to nine’—the starting point follows ตั้งแต่ and the endpoint follows ถึง.
✅ วันนี้ฉันเรียนตั้งแต่เที่ยงถึงสามทุ่มค่ะ
wan ni chan rian tangtae thiang thueng sam thum kha
Today I have classes from noon until nine p.m. (ordinary-polite schedule statement, female speaker)
4. Copying English numeral–noun order
❌ อาทิตย์นี้ผมมีสองรายงานต้องส่งครับ
Incorrect English-like order and missing document classifier.
✅ อาทิตย์นี้ผมมีรายงานต้องส่งสองฉบับครับ
athit ni phom mi raingan tong song song chabap khrap
This week I have two reports to submit. (ordinary-polite workload statement, male speaker)
Key Takeaways
Use ทำงานที่ for a workplace, ทำงานเป็น for a role, เรียนที่ for an institution, and เรียน + subject for a field. Build routines with frequency and schedule expressions, ongoing activity with กำลัง…อยู่, and progress with เสร็จแล้ว/ยังไม่เสร็จ. State deadlines with ภายใน, count each task with its lexical classifier, and omit repeated material only when the active assignment or course is recoverable.
