Phone Calls and Messaging Formulae

Thai phone and messaging exchanges use conventional frames whose subjects are often omitted: ขอสายคุณ… “May I speak to Khun…?”, ฝากข้อความไหม “Would you like to leave a message?”, เดี๋ยวให้โทรกลับ “I'll have them call back,” and ส่งข้อความมาได้เลย “Feel free to message me.”

The omitted people are recovered from caller, receiver, and message context. Polite particles remain important with strangers or at work, while close friends use shorter versions. Verb order—not English auxiliary order—identifies who calls, who receives information, and who should act.

Opening a call and asking for someone

After a greeting, identify yourself or request the intended person. ขอสาย + person is a fixed telephone formula; it is not the ordinary meaning “ask for a line” assembled word by word.

สวัสดีค่ะ ที่นี่คลินิกสุขใจค่ะ

sawatdi kha thi ni khlinik suk chai kha

Hello, this is Sukjai Clinic. (ordinary-polite institutional answer, female staff member)

ผมธนาครับ ขอสายคุณมณีหน่อยครับ

phom thana khrap kho sai khun mani noi khrap

This is Thana. May I speak to Khun Mani, please? (ordinary-polite call opening, male caller)

กำลังพูดอยู่ค่ะ ไม่ทราบว่าใครโทรมาคะ

kamlang phut yu kha mai sap wa khrai tho ma kha

Speaking. May I ask who's calling? (ordinary-polite answer and question, female receiver)

กำลังพูดอยู่ in this telephone formula means that the requested person is the one currently speaking. Outside this setting, it can simply mean “is speaking.” Formula and context narrow the interpretation.

💡
Use ขอสาย + name only for reaching a person by telephone. For asking someone to hand you an object called สาย, Thai needs an ordinary request frame; the telephone collocation is conventional.

When the person is unavailable

Common explanations include ไม่อยู่ “isn't here/available,” ติดประชุม “is tied up in a meeting,” and คุยสายอื่นอยู่ “is on another call.” The time reference comes from ตอนนี้ and the active call, not from an inflected present tense.

ตอนนี้คุณมณีติดประชุมอยู่ค่ะ จะฝากข้อความไว้ไหมคะ

ton ni khun mani tit prachum yu kha cha fak khokhwam wai mai kha

Khun Mani is in a meeting right now. Would you like to leave a message? (ordinary-polite response, female staff member)

ฝากบอกว่าผมโทรมาเรื่องสัญญาใหม่ครับ

fak bok wa phom tho ma rueang sanya mai khrap

Please tell her that I called about the new contract. (ordinary-polite message, male caller)

ได้ค่ะ เดี๋ยวให้คุณมณีโทรกลับนะคะ

dai kha diao hai khun mani tho klap na kha

Certainly. I'll have Khun Mani call you back shortly. (ordinary-polite promise, female staff member)

In ฝากบอกว่า + proposition, ว่า introduces information. In ให้คุณมณีโทรกลับ, ให้ introduces the action expected from Khun Mani. Replacing one with the other changes the structure. See speech frames with ว่า.

The recipient of โทรกลับ is usually recoverable as the caller. Add โทรกลับหาผม only when the intended recipient might be unclear.

Calling, calling back, and messaging

โทรหา + person means call someone. โทรกลับ means call back, and ส่งข้อความให้ + person means send someone a message. The person is not introduced by general กับ “with.”

ถึงบ้านแล้วโทรหาฉันด้วยนะคะ

thueng ban laeo tho ha chan duai na kha

Call me when you get home, please. (ordinary-polite request, female speaker)

เมื่อกี้ผมรับสายไม่ทัน เดี๋ยวโทรกลับครับ

muea ki phom rap sai mai than diao tho klap khrap

I couldn't answer in time just now. I'll call back shortly. (ordinary-polite statement, male speaker)

ถ้าไม่สะดวกคุย ส่งข้อความมาได้เลยค่ะ

tha mai saduak khui song khokhwam ma dai loei kha

If it isn't convenient to talk, feel free to send me a message. (ordinary-polite option, female speaker)

มา in ส่งข้อความมา directs the message toward the speaker's communicative center. ไป would direct it onward to someone else. This is the same deictic contrast as physical motion, extended to transfer.

Message status and response

Messaging talk commonly uses ส่งแล้ว “sent,” อ่านแล้ว “read,” ยังไม่ตอบ “not replied yet,” and ตอบกลับ “reply.” These markers describe event status, not conjugated tenses.

ฉันส่งที่อยู่ให้แล้วนะคะ ได้รับไหมคะ

chan song thi yu hai laeo na kha dai rap mai kha

I've sent you the address. Did you receive it? (ordinary-polite message check, female speaker)

ได้รับแล้วครับ แต่ยังไม่ได้เปิดดู

dai rap laeo khrap tae yang mai dai poet du

I've received it, but I haven't opened it yet. (ordinary-polite reply, male speaker)

เขาอ่านแล้วแต่ยังไม่ตอบค่ะ

khao an laeo tae yang mai top kha

They've read it but haven't replied yet. (ordinary-polite update, female speaker)

แล้ว presents receipt or reading as attained. ยังไม่ได้เปิด says the opening event has not yet occurred. The English perfect translations are contextual; Thai does not conjugate ส่ง, รับ, อ่าน, or ตอบ.

💡
Keep message events separate: ส่งแล้ว concerns the sender, ได้รับแล้ว concerns arrival to the receiver, อ่านแล้ว concerns access to content, and ตอบแล้ว concerns a response. One English “done” cannot replace all four predicates.

Managing a bad connection

Useful repair formulas are ได้ยินไหม “Can you hear me?”, สัญญาณไม่ค่อยดี “the signal isn't very good,” ช่วยพูดอีกครั้ง “please say that again,” and สายหลุด “the call dropped.”

ได้ยินผมชัดไหมครับ

dai yin phom chat mai khrap

Can you hear me clearly? (ordinary-polite connection check, male speaker)

สัญญาณไม่ค่อยดีค่ะ ช่วยพูดอีกครั้งได้ไหมคะ

sanyan mai khoi di kha chuai phut ik khrang dai mai kha

The signal isn't very good. Could you say that again? (ordinary-polite repair request, female speaker)

เมื่อกี้สายหลุดครับ ตอนนี้ได้ยินชัดแล้ว

muea ki sai lut khrap ton ni dai yin chat laeo

The call dropped just now. I can hear clearly now. (ordinary-polite update, male speaker)

Here สาย refers to the telephone connection. In รับสาย, it is the call one answers; in วางสาย, it is the call one ends. These should be learned as collocations rather than translated as physical “line” every time.

Casual and polite versions

Close friends commonly say โทรกลับด้วย, ทักมานะ, เห็นข้อความยัง, or เดี๋ยวโทรหา (informal), often without pronouns or polite particles. ทัก literally initiates contact or greets and is now common for messaging someone (informal).

At work, use ส่งข้อความ, ขอฝากข้อความ, รบกวนโทรกลับ, and ครับ/ค่ะ/คะ. รบกวน + action (polite/formal-neutral) frames the action as an imposition and softens the request.

รบกวนโทรกลับก่อนสี่โมงได้ไหมครับ

ropkuan tho klap kon si mong dai mai khrap

Could you please call me back before four? (polite workplace request, male speaker)

Phone answers often omit “I” because the voice and turn identify the speaker. State a name when reaching an unfamiliar organization or when calls may be transferred.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

A male caller leaves a message with a female receptionist.

สวัสดีครับ ขอสายคุณพิมจากฝ่ายบัญชีหน่อยครับ

sawatdi khrap kho sai khun phim chak fai banchi noi khrap

Hello. May I speak to Khun Phim from Accounting, please? (ordinary-polite request, male caller)

ตอนนี้คุณพิมคุยสายอื่นอยู่ค่ะ จะให้โทรกลับไหมคะ

ton ni khun phim khui sai uen yu kha cha hai tho klap mai kha

Khun Phim is on another call. Shall I have her call you back? (ordinary-polite reply, female receptionist)

ครับ ฝากบอกว่าเอกสารพร้อมแล้วนะครับ

khrap fak bok wa ekkasan phrom laeo na khrap

Yes, please tell her that the documents are ready. (ordinary-polite message, male caller)

ได้ค่ะ ขอเบอร์ติดต่อกลับด้วยนะคะ

dai kha kho boe titto klap duai na kha

Certainly. May I have a callback number too, please? (ordinary-polite request, female receptionist)

Common Mistakes

1. Using กับ for the person called

❌ ผมจะโทรกับคุณพิมครับ

Incorrect for intended ‘call Khun Phim’—โทร selects the contacted person with หา.

✅ ผมจะโทรหาคุณพิมตอนบ่ายครับ

phom cha tho ha khun phim ton bai khrap

I'll call Khun Phim this afternoon. (ordinary-polite plan, male speaker)

2. Using ว่า for a requested action

❌ ฝากบอกเขาว่าโทรกลับค่ะ

Unclear for intended directive—ว่า introduces quoted information, while ให้ introduces the action requested of him.

✅ ฝากบอกเขาให้โทรกลับด้วยค่ะ

fak bok khao hai tho klap duai kha

Please tell him to call back. (ordinary-polite request, female speaker)

3. Treating แล้ว as a general past auxiliary

❌ เมื่อวานแล้วผมโทรหาลูกค้าครับ

Incorrect—เมื่อวาน already supplies past time; แล้ว does not go before the subject as a past marker.

✅ เมื่อวานผมโทรหาลูกค้าสองครั้งครับ

muea wan phom tho ha lukkha song khrang khrap

Yesterday I called the client twice. (ordinary-polite report, male speaker; ครั้ง counts call occasions)

4. Using female statement ค่ะ in a direct question

❌ จะฝากข้อความไหมค่ะ

Incorrect polite-particle form for a female speaker's direct question.

✅ จะฝากข้อความไว้ไหมคะ

cha fak khokhwam wai mai kha

Would you like to leave a message? (ordinary-polite question, female speaker)

Key Takeaways

Request a person with ขอสาย…, leave information with ฝากบอกว่า…, request an action with ฝากบอกให้…, and offer a callback with ให้โทรกลับ. Use โทรหา for the contacted person, track message stages with separate predicates plus แล้ว/ยังไม่, and choose shorter informal formulas only when the relationship supports them.
