Thai จาก marks a source, separation point, or origin; ถึง marks reaching a goal or the upper endpoint of a range. In a route, จากเชียงใหม่ถึงลำปาง means “from Chiang Mai to Lampang.” Yet English from and to cover many other relations, so neither Thai form should be inserted mechanically.
The two words also differ in category. จาก commonly introduces a source phrase after a motion or separation predicate. ถึง can itself be the predicate “reach/arrive at,” and it also marks an endpoint in จาก...ถึง.... Predicate choice and order reveal the intended path.
จาก introduces the source
The source normally follows the motion or separation predicate: มา + จาก + source, ออก + จาก + source, เดิน + จาก + source.
| Source type | Productive frame | Question answered |
|---|---|---|
| origin of movement | มา/เดิน/ขับ + จาก + place | where from? |
| exit boundary | ออก + จาก + place | out of where? |
| origin of object/information | noun + จาก + source | originating with whom/where? |
| basis of learning/inference | learn/infer + จาก + experience/evidence | on what source? |
ผมเพิ่งกลับมาจากเชียงรายครับ
phom phoeng klap ma chak chiang rai khrap
I've just come back from Chiang Rai. (ordinary polite travel update, male speaker)
รถเที่ยวแรกออกจากสถานีตอนหกโมงเช้าค่ะ
rot thiao raek ok chak sathani ton hok mong chao kha
The first bus leaves the station at six in the morning. (ordinary polite schedule information, female speaker)
ฉันได้รับข้อความจากฝ่ายบริการลูกค้าค่ะ
chan dai rap khokhwam chak fai borikan luk kha kha
I received a message from customer service. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
มา selects motion toward the current viewpoint; ออก supplies the exit event; ได้รับ supplies transfer to a recipient. จาก consistently marks the origin but does not carry tense. เพิ่ง and the clock expression provide time.
ถึง profiles reaching the goal
As a motion predicate, ถึง + goal means “reach/arrive at.” It highlights attainment of the endpoint. A simple directional ไป + place presents going toward or to a destination without necessarily foregrounding arrival.
รถไฟถึงอยุธยาแล้วครับ
rot fai thueng ayutthaya laeo khrap
The train has reached Ayutthaya. (ordinary polite arrival report, male speaker)
พรุ่งนี้เราจะไปอยุธยาค่ะ
phrung ni rao cha pai ayutthaya kha
Tomorrow we're going to Ayutthaya. (ordinary polite travel plan, female speaker)
ถ้าออกตอนนี้ น่าจะไปถึงสนามบินก่อนเที่ยงครับ
tha ok ton ni na cha pai thueng sanambin kon thiang khrap
If we leave now, we should reach the airport before noon. (ordinary polite prediction, male speaker)
This minimal contrast matters: ไปอยุธยา presents the trip and its destination; ถึงอยุธยาแล้ว asserts arrival. ไปถึง combines direction with endpoint attainment. English uses to in both “go to” and “get to,” but Thai chooses a predicate according to viewpoint.
Aspect surrounds this endpoint meaning. ยังไม่ถึง says the expected goal has not been reached; ถึงแล้ว marks arrival as attained and currently relevant; จะถึง presents arrival prospectively. These are combinations, not conjugated forms of ถึง.
Source–path–goal order
When both endpoints are expressed, Thai normally follows the conceptual route from source to goal.
รถรับส่งวิ่งจากโรงแรมไปถึงศูนย์ประชุมทุกครึ่งชั่วโมงครับ
rot rap song wing chak rongraem pai thueng sun prachum thuk khrueng chuamong khrap
The shuttle runs from the hotel to the convention center every half hour. (ordinary polite route information, male speaker)
เราเดินจากตลาดผ่านสวนสาธารณะแล้วไปถึงแม่น้ำค่ะ
rao doen chak talat phan suan satharana laeo pai thueng mae nam kha
We walked from the market through the park and reached the river. (ordinary polite route narrative, female speaker)
The second line adds ผ่าน + path between จาก + source and ถึง + goal. Thai serial predicates follow experienced event order rather than treating every following verb as an English infinitive. The source–path–goal order page develops longer routes.
The source or goal can be omitted when active in the conversation: ถึงแล้วครับ “I've arrived” is complete in a message sent to someone waiting. Omission is discourse-licensed, not encoded on the verb.
Ranges from one endpoint to another
จาก A ถึง B marks a span whose endpoints can be places, pages, amounts, stages, or times. ตั้งแต่ A ถึง B emphasizes a continuous interval beginning at A and is especially common with time.
| Range | Productive frame | Example core |
|---|---|---|
| route | จาก + place A + ถึง + place B | จากบ้านถึงออฟฟิศ |
| document | จาก + page A + ถึง + page B | จากหน้าสามถึงหน้าสิบ |
| scale | จาก + low value + ถึง + high value | จากง่ายถึงยาก |
| continuous time | ตั้งแต่ + time A + ถึง + time B | ตั้งแต่เก้าโมงถึงห้าโมง |
จากบ้านถึงออฟฟิศใช้เวลาประมาณสี่สิบนาทีค่ะ
chak ban thueng opfit chai wela praman si sip nathi kha
It takes about forty minutes from home to the office. (ordinary polite commute statement, female speaker)
กรุณาอ่านตั้งแต่หน้าสิบสองถึงหน้าสามสิบครับ
karuna an tangtae na sip song thueng na sam sip khrap
Please read from page twelve through page thirty. (formal-polite instruction, male voice)
ร้านเปิดตั้งแต่แปดโมงเช้าถึงสองทุ่มค่ะ
ran poet tangtae paet mong chao thueng song thum kha
The shop is open from eight in the morning until eight in the evening. (ordinary polite schedule statement, female speaker)
English distinguishes to and until here; Thai endpoint ถึง works with both spatial and temporal scales. The from-and-until guide treats full time-span constructions and endpoint inclusion in more depth.
Abstract sources and goals
จาก can mark the source of knowledge, emotion, evidence, material, or change. ถึง can mark the reached stage or addressee in particular lexical and formal constructions.
เราเรียนรู้จากข้อผิดพลาดครั้งนี้ได้มากครับ
rao rianru chak kho phit phlat khrang ni dai mak khrap
We learned a great deal from this mistake. (ordinary polite reflection, male speaker)
ข้อสรุปนี้มาจากข้อมูลหลายแหล่งค่ะ
kho sarup ni ma chak khomun lai laeng kha
This conclusion comes from several sources of information. (formal-polite explanation, female speaker)
โครงการดำเนินมาถึงขั้นทดลองใช้แล้วครับ
khrongkan damnoen ma thueng khan thotlong chai laeo khrap
The project has now reached the trial stage. (formal-polite progress report, male speaker)
The project travels metaphorically along a development path. มา links the progress to the current viewpoint and ถึง marks the present stage.
Many combinations have conventional meanings. พูดถึง means “mention/talk about,” and คิดถึง means “miss/think of fondly”; neither should be analyzed each time as literal arrival. Likewise, ถึงแม้ and ถึง...ก็... introduce concession rather than a goal. Category follows construction.
English “to” is not one Thai relation
English uses to for destinations, recipients, purposes, and infinitives. Thai distributes those jobs:
- ไป + place for a destination: ไปเชียงใหม่
- ถึง + place for reaching: ถึงเชียงใหม่แล้ว
- ให้ + recipient for giving or sending: ส่งไฟล์ให้หัวหน้า
- serial predicates for purpose: ไปซื้อยา “go buy medicine”
ฉันส่งสำเนาให้ผู้จัดการแล้วค่ะ
chan song samna hai phu chatkan laeo kha
I've sent a copy to the manager. (ordinary polite transfer report, female speaker; recipient marked by ให้)
ผมออกไปซื้อยาที่ร้านหน้าปากซอยครับ
phom ok pai sue ya thi ran na pak soi khrap
I'm going out to buy medicine at the shop by the lane entrance. (ordinary polite statement, male speaker; purpose expressed by serial predicates)
Replacing ให้ or the serial structure with ถึง would change or break the relation. Thai order and lexical predicates do the work that English delegates to a broad function word.
Negation and endpoint scope
ยังไม่ถึง + goal means “not yet arrived/reached.” ไปไม่ถึง + goal means that motion fails to attain the endpoint. ไม่ถึง + quantity means “less than/not reaching” that amount.
ตอนนี้รถยังมาไม่ถึงครับ
ton ni rot yang ma mai thueng khrap
The vehicle still hasn't arrived. (ordinary polite live update, male speaker)
ถนนน้ำท่วม เราเลยไปไม่ถึงหมู่บ้านค่ะ
thanon nam thuam rao loei pai mai thueng mu ban kha
The road was flooded, so we couldn't reach the village. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
Negation precedes the endpoint predicate it denies. No English do-support or past auxiliary is added.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
A passenger asks about a minibus route.
รถคันนี้มาจากสนามบินใช่ไหมคะ
rot khan ni ma chak sanambin chai mai kha
This minibus comes from the airport, right? (ordinary polite confirmation, female passenger)
ใช่ครับ แล้ววิ่งต่อไปถึงสถานีรถไฟ
chai khrap laeo wing to pai thueng sathani rot fai
Yes, and it continues to the railway station. (ordinary polite reply, male driver)
จากตรงนี้ถึงสถานีใช้เวลานานไหมคะ
chak trong ni thueng sathani chai wela nan mai kha
Does it take long from here to the station? (ordinary polite question, female passenger)
ประมาณยี่สิบนาทีครับ ถ้ารถไม่ติด
praman yi sip nathi khrap tha rot mai tit
About twenty minutes, if traffic is clear. (ordinary polite reply, male driver; endpoints omitted as active)
Common Mistakes
1. Using ถึง for English purpose “to”
❌ ผมไปถึงซื้ออาหารครับ
Incorrect—ถึง would mark a reached goal, not the purpose of going.
✅ ผมไปซื้ออาหารครับ
phom pai sue ahan khrap
I'm going to buy food. (ordinary polite purpose serial, male speaker)
2. Adding ที่ inside a simple source phrase
❌ เธอเพิ่งกลับมาจากที่ภูเก็ตค่ะ
Unnatural ordinary source phrase—the place name follows จาก directly.
✅ เธอเพิ่งกลับมาจากภูเก็ตค่ะ
thoe phoeng klap ma chak phuket kha
She has just returned from Phuket. (ordinary polite travel report, female speaker)
3. Reversing motion and source
❌ ผมจากบ้านออกตอนเจ็ดโมงครับ
Incorrect neutral predicate order—ออก precedes จาก + source.
✅ ผมออกจากบ้านตอนเจ็ดโมงครับ
phom ok chak ban ton chet mong khrap
I left home at seven. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
4. Using จาก for both ends of a range
❌ ห้องสมุดเปิดจากวันจันทร์จากวันศุกร์ค่ะ
Incorrect range pairing—the upper endpoint takes ถึง.
✅ ห้องสมุดเปิดตั้งแต่วันจันทร์ถึงวันศุกร์ค่ะ
hongsamut poet tangtae wan chan thueng wan suk kha
The library is open from Monday through Friday. (ordinary polite schedule statement, female speaker)
Key Takeaways
Use จาก after motion, separation, transfer, or learning predicates to mark a source. Use predicate ถึง to profile achieved arrival and endpoint ถึง in a range. Keep source–path–goal order, combine endpoint meanings with aspect rather than tense inflection, and first identify what English to means before choosing a Thai construction.
