กับ as With, Against, and Conjunction

Thai กับ links a participant to a companion or interaction partner and coordinates noun phrases. ไปกับเพื่อน means “go with a friend,” while ผมกับเพื่อนไป means “my friend and I go.” With predicates such as คุย, ทะเลาะ, and แข่งขัน, the same relator introduces the other participant in a conversation, conflict, or competition.

English with also marks instruments, manner, possession, and many other relations. Thai does not assign all of them to กับ. The governing predicate and the position of the phrase determine whether กับ means accompaniment, an opponent, a comparison partner, or simple noun coordination.

Companion after the predicate

The productive comitative frame is subject + predicate + กับ + companion. The companion participates in the same broader activity but is not automatically a second grammatical subject of every embedded action.

พรุ่งนี้ผมจะไปตรวจโกดังกับหัวหน้าครับ

phrung ni phom cha pai truat kodang kap hua na khrap

Tomorrow I'll go inspect the warehouse with my manager. (ordinary polite plan, male speaker; manager accompanies the speaker)

คุณยายอยู่กับน้องสาวที่เชียงใหม่ค่ะ

khun yai yu kap nong sao thi chiang mai kha

Grandmother lives with her younger sister in Chiang Mai. (ordinary polite residence statement, female speaker)

เด็กมางานกับผู้ปกครองได้ครับ

dek ma ngan kap phu pokkhrong dai khrap

Children may come to the event with a parent or guardian. (formal-polite permission, male voice)

In the first line, ผม is the grammatical subject and กับหัวหน้า adds a companion. จะ marks the plan as prospective; กับ neither agrees with participants nor marks tense. In the residence example, lexical อยู่กับ presents shared residence or company, not merely two objects occupying coordinates.

💡
Before using กับ for English with, ask whether the following noun accompanies or interacts. If it is a tool, manner, material, or recipient, Thai usually chooses another construction.

Coordinate subject versus companion

Moving the กับ phrase before the predicate changes participant structure.

ผมกับหัวหน้าจะไปพบลูกค้าครับ

phom kap hua na cha pai phop luk kha khrap

My manager and I will go meet the client. (ordinary polite coordinated-subject plan, male speaker)

ผมจะไปพบลูกค้ากับหัวหน้าครับ

phom cha pai phop luk kha kap hua na khrap

I will go meet the client with my manager. (ordinary polite comitative plan, male speaker)

The situations may overlap, but the first presents ผมกับหัวหน้า as one coordinated subject. The second presents ผม as subject and the manager as companion. Neither verb changes to plural, and Thai needs no article before หัวหน้า.

This second sentence also has a possible attachment ambiguity: without context, กับหัวหน้า could be heard as another person met alongside the client. A clearer comitative version is ผมจะไปกับหัวหน้าเพื่อพบลูกค้า, while ผมจะไปพบลูกค้ากับหัวหน้าเขา clearly coordinates two people being met. Thai relies on order and plausible roles rather than case endings.

ฉันจะไปกับพี่สาว แล้วเจอกันที่หน้าร้านนะคะ

chan cha pai kap phi sao laeo choe kan thi na ran na kha

I'll go with my older sister, and we'll meet in front of the shop. (ordinary polite arrangement, female speaker)

Here the companion is placed next to ไป, making accompaniment clear. In เจอกัน, the meeting participants are recovered from the arrangement rather than restated as a subject and object.

กับ as a noun-phrase coordinator

Between noun phrases, กับ is ordinary conversational “and.” It commonly coordinates people, things, foods, times, and alternatives inside a single clause. และ is more common in formal lists and careful written prose (formal-neutral).

วันนี้สั่งข้าวผัดกับต้มยำไว้ให้ทีมค่ะ

wan ni sang khao phat kap tom yam wai hai thim kha

Today I ordered fried rice and tom yum for the team. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; coordinated dishes)

ฝ่ายกฎหมายกับฝ่ายบัญชีต้องตรวจสัญญานี้ครับ

fai kotmai kap fai banchi tong truat sanya ni khrap

Legal and Accounting must review this contract. (ordinary professional statement, male speaker; coordinated subject)

รายงานครอบคลุมต้นทุน รายได้ และความเสี่ยงของโครงการ

raingan khropkhlum tonthun rai dai lae khwam siang khong khrongkan

The report covers the project's costs, revenue, and risks. (formal written list)

The formal example uses และ before the final item. This is a register preference, not a separate plural grammar. With a long list in speech, speakers may repeat กับ or use pauses; in formal prose, punctuation plus และ is easier to scan.

กับ normally coordinates noun-like constituents, not a sequence of full events. Use แล้ว, แล้วก็, แต่, or another clause linker when the relationship is temporal or logical.

Interaction partners: “with” and “against”

The meaning “against” comes from the predicate's participant structure, not from a separate adversative form of กับ.

เมื่อเช้าผมคุยกับเจ้าของร้านเรื่องค่าเช่าครับ

muea chao phom khui kap chao khong ran rueang kha chao khrap

This morning I spoke with the shop owner about the rent. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

ทีมโรงเรียนเราจะแข่งขันกับทีมจังหวัดข้าง ๆ ค่ะ

thim rongrian rao cha khaengkhan kap thim changwat khang khang kha

Our school team will compete against the team from the neighboring province. (ordinary polite statement, female speaker)

อย่าทะเลาะกับลูกค้าต่อหน้าคนอื่นนะครับ

ya thalo kap luk kha to na khon uen na khrap

Please don't argue with a customer in front of other people. (ordinary polite workplace warning, male speaker)

คุย creates conversational partners, แข่งขัน creates opponents, and ทะเลาะ creates parties to a conflict. กับ simply introduces the other participant. Translating it as inherently friendly “with” or inherently hostile “against” would miss the role of the predicate.

Relational predicates often have conventional complement choices. เหมือนกับ “be like,” ตรงกับ “match,” เข้ากับ “go with/get along with,” and เกี่ยวกับ “concern/be about” are established combinations.

สีผ้าม่านเข้ากับผนังห้องดีมากค่ะ

si pha man khao kap phanang hong di mak kha

The curtain color goes very well with the room's walls. (ordinary polite evaluation, female speaker)

ข้อมูลในใบเสร็จไม่ตรงกับยอดในระบบครับ

khomun nai bai set mai trong kap yot nai rabop khrap

The information on the receipt does not match the total in the system. (ordinary polite discrepancy report, male speaker)

These meanings should be learned with their predicates. English may use about for เกี่ยวกับ, but Thai still treats the combination as a lexical relation.

Instruments use ใช้ or ด้วย

English “cut it with a knife” uses with for a tool. Standard Thai normally uses ใช้ + instrument + verb or puts ด้วย + instrument after the event. กับ would present the tool as a companion or coordinated noun.

ใช้กรรไกรตัดเชือกเส้นนี้นะคะ

chai kankrai tat chueak sen ni na kha

Use scissors to cut this piece of rope, please. (ordinary polite instruction, female speaker)

ช่างวัดความยาวด้วยเครื่องมือดิจิทัลครับ

chang wat khwam yao duai khrueang mue dichithan khrap

The technician measured the length with a digital instrument. (formal-polite report, male speaker)

The first makes the instrument an object of ใช้ before the action. The second marks means with ด้วย. The instrument-verb guide explains these orders.

Recipients use ให้

A transfer recipient is not simply a companion. ส่งเอกสารให้หัวหน้า means “send the document to the manager.” ส่งเอกสารกับหัวหน้า is likely to mean sending documents together with the manager or coordinating the manager with another object—an unintended structure.

ช่วยส่งใบเสร็จให้ฝ่ายการเงินด้วยค่ะ

chuai song bai set hai fai kan ngoen duai kha

Please send the receipt to Finance too. (ordinary polite request, female speaker; recipient marked by ให้)

ด้วย here makes the request additive/polite in context; ให้ฝ่ายการเงิน identifies the recipient. English uses to, while Thai chooses a ditransitive frame. See recipient ให้.

Reciprocity and ด้วยกัน

A coordinated subject can be interpreted as joint, but mutual action is often made explicit with กัน. ด้วยกัน highlights being together.

คุณนิดกับคุณอรช่วยกันจัดห้องประชุมค่ะ

khun nit kap khun on chuai kan chat hong prachum kha

Khun Nit and Khun On worked together to arrange the meeting room. (ordinary polite cooperative report, female speaker)

หลังเลิกงานเราไปกินข้าวด้วยกันไหมครับ

lang loek ngan rao pai kin khao duai kan mai khrap

Shall we go eat together after work? (ordinary polite invitation, male speaker)

กับ coordinates the named people in the first line; กัน organizes them as joint agents. In the second, ด้วยกัน presents the active group as companions in one event. None of these forms is plural agreement on the verb. The reciprocal กัน guide develops the participant structure.

💡
กับ can add a companion, but it does not by itself mean that every participant acts mutually. Add กัน or ด้วยกัน when reciprocal or shared participation is the intended new information.

Scope and omission

When a question establishes the predicate, a short กับ + person answer is natural. The relator cannot stand alone if the companion is the new information.

พรุ่งนี้ไปตรวจสถานที่กับใครคะ

phrung ni pai truat sathan thi kap khrai kha

Who are you going to inspect the venue with tomorrow? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)

ไปกับคุณมาร์คครับ หัวหน้าติดประชุม

pai kap khun mak khrap hua na tit prachum

I'm going with Khun Mark; the manager is tied up in a meeting. (ordinary polite answer, male speaker; subject and venue omitted)

The companion remains overt because it answers the live question; given participants disappear. This is discourse economy, not a missing conjugation.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

Two colleagues plan errands after a meeting.

บ่ายนี้คุณจะไปธนาคารกับใครคะ

bai ni khun cha pai thanakhan kap khrai kha

Who are you going to the bank with this afternoon? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)

ไปกับคุณต้นครับ แล้วจะแวะคุยกับฝ่ายบัญชีด้วย

pai kap khun ton khrap laeo cha wae khui kap fai banchi duai

I'm going with Khun Ton, and we'll stop to speak with Accounting too. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)

ฝากเอกสารชุดนี้ให้ฝ่ายบัญชีได้ไหมคะ

fak ekkasan chut ni hai fai banchi dai mai kha

Could you leave this set of documents with Accounting for me? (ordinary polite request, female speaker; recipient marked by ให้)

ได้ครับ เดี๋ยวผมเอาไปให้เอง

dai khrap diao phom ao pai hai eng

Certainly. I'll take it to them myself. (ordinary polite commitment, male speaker)

The dialogue distinguishes companion กับคุณต้น, interaction partner คุยกับฝ่ายบัญชี, and recipient ให้ฝ่ายบัญชี.

Common Mistakes

1. Using กับ for an instrument

❌ ฉันตัดกระดาษกับกรรไกรค่ะ

Wrong for intended instrument meaning—กับ makes the scissors sound coordinated with the paper rather than used as a tool.

✅ ฉันใช้กรรไกรตัดกระดาษค่ะ

chan chai kankrai tat kradat kha

I cut the paper with scissors. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)

2. Putting the companion before the subject

❌ กับเพื่อนผมจะไปดูหนังครับ

Incorrect neutral comitative order—the subject precedes the predicate, and กับ introduces the companion after the relevant event.

✅ ผมจะไปดูหนังกับเพื่อนครับ

phom cha pai du nang kap phuean khrap

I'm going to see a film with a friend. (ordinary polite plan, male speaker)

3. Using กับ for a transfer recipient

❌ ช่วยส่งสัญญากับผู้จัดการค่ะ

Wrong for intended recipient meaning—กับ suggests accompaniment or coordination rather than transfer to the manager.

✅ ช่วยส่งสัญญาให้ผู้จัดการค่ะ

chuai song sanya hai phu chatkan kha

Please send the contract to the manager. (ordinary polite request, female speaker)

4. Coordinating complete events with nominal กับ

❌ ผมส่งอีเมลกับกลับบ้านแล้วครับ

Incorrect neutral event sequence—กับ coordinates noun-like expressions, not these successive predicates.

✅ ผมส่งอีเมลแล้วก็กลับบ้านครับ

phom song imel laeo ko klap ban khrap

I sent the email and then went home. (ordinary polite event sequence, male speaker)

Key Takeaways

Use predicate + กับ + companion/partner for accompaniment and interaction, but A กับ B + predicate for a coordinated subject. Predicate meaning supplies friendly “with,” adversarial “against,” comparison, or matching. Instruments use ใช้/ด้วย, recipients use ให้, and full event sequences need clause linkers rather than nominal กับ.
