Thai can present a tool as something an actor deliberately uses, then immediately name the action performed with it: ใช้ + instrument + action + patient. In ใช้มีดหั่นผัก “use a knife to cut vegetables,” มีด is the object of ใช้, while ผัก is the patient of หั่น. The two verbs stay unchanged and their order packages one coherent event.
This construction is productive, but it is not the only way to mention an instrument. Thai can also add ด้วย + instrument after an action. The difference is chiefly how the speaker organizes the message: ใช้ selects or foregrounds the tool; ด้วย adds the means to an already named action.
The core instrument frame
The most useful pattern is actor + ใช้ + tool + action + affected entity. An English translation often inserts to or with, but Thai inserts neither an infinitive marker nor a conjugated auxiliary.
เชฟใช้มีดเล่มนี้หั่นฟักทองเป็นชิ้นบาง ๆ ครับ
chep chai mit lem ni han fakthong pen chin bang bang khrap
The chef uses this knife to slice the pumpkin thinly. (ordinary polite explanation, male speaker)
น้องใช้กรรไกรตัดกระดาษสีทำการ์ดค่ะ
nong chai kankrai tat kradat si tham kat kha
My younger sibling is using scissors to cut colored paper for a card. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
In the first example, classifier phrase มีดเล่มนี้ is the instrument selected by ใช้. The following predicate หั่น brings its own patient, ฟักทอง. In the second, กระดาษสี belongs to ตัด, while ทำการ์ด states the next purpose. Thai listeners recover these roles from lexical meaning and order, not from case endings.
A productive slot table
| Actor | ใช้ + selected instrument | Action | Patient or goal | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ช่าง | ใช้สว่าน | เจาะ | ผนัง | a technician uses a drill on a wall |
| ฉัน | ใช้แอป | โอน | เงิน | I use an app to transfer money |
| พนักงาน | ใช้เครื่องนี้ | สแกน | เอกสาร | an employee uses this machine to scan documents |
| เขา | ใช้ปากกา | เซ็น | สัญญา | they use a pen to sign a contract |
ช่างใช้สว่านเจาะผนังตรงมุมห้องครับ
chang chai sawan cho phanang trong mum hong khrap
The technician is using a drill on the wall in the corner. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
ฉันใช้แอปนี้โอนค่าเช่าเมื่อเช้าค่ะ
chan chai aep ni on kha chao muea chao kha
I used this app to transfer the rent this morning. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
Nothing on ใช้, เจาะ, or โอน changes for person or time. เมื่อเช้า locates the transfer in the past. A future time phrase could locate the same unchanged verbs later. Thai aspect markers may scope over the activity, but they do not turn either verb into an English tense.
ใช้ versus ด้วย
Compare two natural ways to describe opening a package:
เขาใช้มีดเปิดกล่องครับ
khao chai mit poet klong khrap
He uses a knife to open the box. (ordinary polite; selects the knife as the tool, male speaker)
เขาเปิดกล่องด้วยมีดครับ
khao poet klong duai mit khrap
He opens the box with a knife. (ordinary polite; adds the means after the action, male speaker)
The truth conditions can be nearly identical. The ใช้ version guides the listener through tool selection before the action; it is especially useful in instructions, demonstrations, and comparisons among possible tools. The ด้วย version starts with the action and patient, then supplies the means. ด้วย has other functions elsewhere, so it is not a universal “instrument case marker”; here its following noun is understood as the means because of the action and context.
กรอกแบบฟอร์มด้วยปากกาสีน้ำเงินนะคะ
krok baep fom duai pakka si namngoen na kha
Please fill in the form with a blue pen. (ordinary polite instruction, female speaker)
งานนี้ใช้คีมตัดลวดจะสะดวกกว่าค่ะ
ngan ni chai khim tat luat cha saduak kwa kha
For this job, using pliers to cut the wire will be more convenient. (ordinary polite recommendation, female speaker)
The second example explicitly evaluates a tool choice. จะ presents the expected consequence สะดวกกว่า; it is not future conjugation on ใช้.
Omission and recoverability
Once the tool or patient is active, Thai can omit it. The omitted material must be recoverable from the shared task.
เครื่องไหนใช้สแกนบัตรได้คะ
khrueang nai chai sakaen bat dai kha
Which machine can be used to scan the card? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
ใช้เครื่องข้างหน้าครับ สแกนได้ทั้งสองด้าน
chai khrueang khang na khrap sakaen dai thang song dan
Use the machine in front; it can scan both sides. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; card is omitted)
The reply omits the actor “you” and the already known card. This is not random deletion. Without a visible task or prior mention of the card, the short answer would not identify what should be scanned.
Negation and result scope
Put negation before the predicate whose event is denied. ไม่ได้ใช้ + tool + action denies using that tool for the action. Negation before a following result instead says that the attempted action did not reach the result.
ผมไม่ได้ใช้ค้อนงัดฝาครับ ใช้ไขควง
phom mai dai chai khon ngat fa khrap chai khai khuang
I didn't use a hammer to pry off the lid; I used a screwdriver. (ordinary polite correction, male speaker)
เครื่องนี้ใช้ตัดแผ่นหนาไม่ขาดค่ะ
khrueang ni chai tat phaen na mai khat kha
This machine cannot cut clean through a thick sheet. (ordinary polite assessment, female speaker; failed result)
English uses didn't or cannot around an auxiliary. Thai keeps ใช้ and ตัด invariant and lets ไม่ได้ or result-level ไม่ขาด establish scope. The negative-scope page develops longer chains.
Progressive activity and event order
กำลัง can present the using activity as underway. A directional or result predicate may follow the action when the situation warrants it.
พนักงานกำลังใช้เครื่องดูดฝุ่นทำความสะอาดห้องอยู่ค่ะ
phanak ngan kamlang chai khrueang dut fun tham khwam sa at hong yu kha
The employee is using a vacuum cleaner to clean the room. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
ใช้ผ้าผืนนี้เช็ดน้ำออกก่อนครับ
chai pha phuen ni chet nam ok kon khrap
Use this cloth to wipe the water off first. (ordinary polite instruction, male speaker)
The verbs in ใช้...เช็ด...ออก describe tool selection, wiping, and removal in conceptual order. They are adjacent predicates, not a string of English infinitives.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
Two coworkers assembling a shelf discuss the appropriate tool:
ชั้นตัวนี้ประกอบยังไงคะ
chan tua ni prakop yang ngai kha
How do we assemble this shelf? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
ใช้ไขควงอันเล็กขันสกรูสองตัวนี้ครับ
chai khai khuang an lek khan sakru song tua ni khrap
Use the small screwdriver to tighten these two screws. (ordinary polite instruction, male speaker)
ใช้มือหมุนก่อนได้ไหมคะ
chai mue mun kon dai mai kha
Can I turn them by hand first? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
ได้ครับ แล้วค่อยใช้ไขควงขันให้แน่น
dai khrap laeo khoi chai khai khuang khan hai naen
Yes, then use the screwdriver to tighten them firmly. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
Common Mistakes
1. Inserting เป็น as an English-style infinitive marker
❌ ใช้มีดเป็นหั่นผักครับ
Incorrect—เป็น does not link the selected instrument to the following action.
✅ ใช้มีดหั่นผักครับ
chai mit han phak khrap
Use a knife to cut the vegetables. (ordinary instruction, male speaker)
2. Putting the action's patient immediately after ใช้
❌ ใช้ผักมีดหั่นค่ะ
Incorrect role order for ‘use a knife to cut vegetables’—ผัก is not the instrument.
✅ ใช้มีดหั่นผักค่ะ
chai mit han phak kha
Use a knife to cut the vegetables. (ordinary instruction, female speaker)
3. Doubling two instrument frames without a contrast
❌ เขาใช้ค้อนตอกตะปูด้วยค้อนครับ
Redundant in the intended neutral sentence—the same hammer is introduced twice.
✅ เขาใช้ค้อนตอกตะปูครับ
khao chai khon tok tapu khrap
He uses a hammer to drive in the nail. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
4. Moving English auxiliary negation after the actor
❌ ผมใช้ไม่ได้ค้อนงัดฝาครับ
Incorrect order for denying which tool was used.
✅ ผมไม่ได้ใช้ค้อนงัดฝาครับ
phom mai dai chai khon ngat fa khrap
I didn't use a hammer to pry off the lid. (ordinary polite, male speaker)
5. Omitting an instrument before it is recoverable
❌ ใช้เปิดกล่องค่ะ
Incomplete as an answer to ‘Which tool should I use?’ because the instrument is still unknown.
✅ ใช้เหรียญเปิดกล่องค่ะ
chai rian poet klong kha
Use a coin to open the box. (ordinary polite answer, female speaker)
Key Takeaways
- ใช้ + instrument + action + patient presents deliberate tool selection followed by the action it enables.
- action + patient + ด้วย + instrument often describes the same event while adding the means later.
- Each verb keeps its own argument relation, even when nouns or addressees are omitted from shared context.
- Negation placement distinguishes denied instrument use from a failed result.
- Time, aspect, direction, and result come from separate words and order; Thai does not conjugate the verbs.
