Instrument Introduction with ใช้

In ใช้ + instrument + action + patient, Thai first presents an instrument as the object of ใช้ “use,” then lets a second predicate assign its own patient: ช่างใช้สว่านเจาะผนัง “the technician uses a drill to bore into the wall.” This is more than inserting a Thai equivalent of English with. The speaker promotes deliberate tool selection into the event sequence, and the lexical meanings of ใช้ and the action divide the participants between them.

This page focuses on that change in participant structure. The same scene can often be packaged as action + patient + ด้วย + instrument, but the information flow differs: ใช้ makes employing the tool part of the asserted predicate chain, whereas ด้วย adds the means to an action already named.

Two local frames inside one event

Parse the construction from left to right: the actor uses the instrument; that same actor then performs the action on its patient. No word corresponding to English to is required between the predicates.

Actorใช้ + selected instrumentAction + patientAdditional result or beneficiary
ช่างใช้สว่านเจาะผนัง
พนักงานใช้เครื่องสแกนสแกนบัตรเก็บไว้
ฉันใช้แอปโอนเงินให้ร้านค้า
พ่อครัวใช้มีดหั่นเนื้อให้ลูกค้า

ช่างใช้สว่านเจาะผนังตรงหลังตู้ครับ

chang chai sawan cho phanang trong lang tu khrap

The technician used a drill to bore into the wall behind the cabinet. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

พนักงานใช้เครื่องอ่านบัตรตรวจข้อมูลผู้โดยสารค่ะ

phanak ngan chai khrueang an bat truat khomun phu doisan kha

The employee uses a card reader to check the passenger's information. (formal-neutral workplace explanation, female speaker)

In the first sentence, สว่าน is selected by ใช้, while ผนัง is affected by เจาะ. In the second, เครื่องอ่านบัตร belongs to ใช้, and ข้อมูลผู้โดยสาร belongs to ตรวจ. Calling every following noun “the object of ใช้” loses the internal structure that Thai order makes visible.

💡
Bracket the chain locally: [ใช้ + instrument] [action + patient]. A longer sentence may add a direction, result, or beneficiary, but each addition still receives its role from the predicate next to it.

Promoting the instrument versus adding it later

Compare two descriptions of the same cutting event:

แม่ครัวใช้มีดเล่มยาวแล่ปลาเป็นชิ้นบาง ๆ ค่ะ

mae khrua chai mit lem yao lae pla pen chin bang bang kha

The cook uses a long knife to slice the fish into thin pieces. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; instrument selected before the action)

แม่ครัวแล่ปลาเป็นชิ้นบาง ๆ ด้วยมีดเล่มยาวค่ะ

mae khrua lae pla pen chin bang bang duai mit lem yao kha

The cook slices the fish into thin pieces with a long knife. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; instrument added after the action)

Both are natural. The first is useful when comparing tools, explaining a method, or guiding a learner through a procedure. The second keeps แล่ปลา as the primary assertion and supplies the means afterward. ด้วย is therefore not merely a movable version of ใช้: it behaves as a relator here, while lexical ใช้ selects an object and enters the predicate sequence.

Formal prose can also package a method with โดยใช้ + instrument, especially when the main event is already established.

ทีมวิจัยวิเคราะห์ตัวอย่างโดยใช้โปรแกรมรุ่นใหม่ครับ

thim wichai wikhro tua yang doi chai prokraem run mai khrap

The research team analyzed the samples using a new version of the software. (academic/formal report, male speaker)

This formal โดยใช้ construction foregrounds method less strongly than beginning the event with ใช้. It must not be generalized to ordinary agentive โดย, which serves a different function in passive packaging.

Physical tools, body parts, systems, and methods

The instrument slot is semantic rather than restricted to handheld objects. It can contain a body part deliberately employed, a vehicle, a program, an account, a language, or a method. The following predicate determines what that resource enables.

เธอใช้มืออีกข้างประคองกล่องไว้ค่ะ

thoe chai mue ik khang prakhong klong wai kha

She uses her other hand to steady the box. (ordinary polite description, female speaker)

ผมใช้บัญชีสำรองเข้าสู่ระบบครับ

phom chai banchi samrong khao su rabop khrap

I used a backup account to log in. (ordinary polite technical report, male speaker)

เราใช้วิธีนี้ลดเวลาตรวจเอกสารได้ค่ะ

rao chai withi ni lot wela truat ekkasan dai kha

We can use this method to reduce document-review time. (formal-neutral explanation, female speaker)

The instrument is not necessarily affected. A drill may wear down, but ใช้สว่านเจาะผนัง does not assert that it does. The wall is the patient of เจาะ because that predicate lexically selects the affected surface. This distinction between semantic roles and mere linear order is central to instrumental serial chains.

An instrument can itself become the topic

When a tool is already salient, Thai can place it first and omit the user: มีดเล่มนี้ใช้หั่นเนื้อได้ดี. The knife is a discourse topic and the understood object of ใช้, not an animate agent that literally performs the whole event by itself.

กรรไกรคู่นี้ใช้ตัดผ้าหนาไม่ค่อยได้ค่ะ

kankrai khu ni chai tat pha na mai khoi dai kha

These scissors do not work very well for cutting thick fabric. (ordinary polite assessment, female speaker; instrument topic and generic user)

เครื่องรุ่นนี้ใช้พิมพ์ฉลากได้เร็วมากครับ

khrueang run ni chai phim chalak dai reo mak khrap

This model can print labels very quickly. (formal-neutral product explanation, male speaker; instrument topic)

English often uses a passive, “can be used to,” but Thai needs no passive morphology. A generic human operator is inferable, and postverbal ได้ evaluates possibility or performance. This is a topic–comment organization, not a universal alternation that every object of ใช้ permits.

Scope in longer chains

Negation before ใช้ denies employing the instrument. Negation after the action can preserve instrument use while denying success. A following ให้ + beneficiary assigns a beneficiary to the action, not to the tool.

ผมไม่ได้ใช้คีมตัดสายเส้นนี้ครับ

phom mai dai chai khim tat sai sen ni khrap

I did not use pliers to cut this cable. (ordinary polite correction, male speaker; instrument use denied)

ช่างใช้คีมตัดสายเส้นนี้ไม่ขาดครับ

chang chai khim tat sai sen ni mai khat khrap

The technician tried cutting this cable with pliers but could not sever it. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; use and cutting attempt asserted, result denied)

พนักงานใช้เครื่องนี้บดกาแฟให้ลูกค้าค่ะ

phanak ngan chai khrueang ni bot kafae hai luk kha kha

The employee uses this machine to grind coffee for customers. (ordinary polite service explanation, female speaker; beneficiary follows the grinding event)

Time and aspect do not change the predicates: เมื่อเช้าใช้... locates the chain earlier; กำลังใช้...อยู่ presents it as ongoing; จะใช้... presents a prospective choice. For more scope contrasts, see negation in predicate chains.

💡
Do not assign a single object to the whole chain. In ใช้เครื่องบดกาแฟให้ลูกค้า, the machine is used, the coffee is ground, and the customer benefits. Order plus lexical valency distributes those three roles.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

Two technicians choose a tool for a repair.

นอตตัวนี้แน่นมาก จะใช้เครื่องมืออะไรดีคะ

not tua ni naen mak cha chai khrueang mue arai di kha

This nut is very tight. What tool should we use? (polite question, female speaker)

ใช้ประแจตัวสั้นคลายก่อนครับ พื้นที่ตรงนี้แคบ

chai prachae tua san khlai kon khrap phuen thi trong ni khaep

Use the short wrench to loosen it first; the space here is narrow. (ordinary polite instruction, male speaker)

ถ้าคลายไม่ออก ใช้สเปรย์ช่วยได้ไหมคะ

tha khlai mai ok chai sapre chuai dai mai kha

If it will not loosen, can we use spray to help? (polite question, female speaker)

ได้ครับ ฉีดไว้สักครู่แล้วค่อยลองใหม่

dai khrap chit wai sak khru laeo khoi long mai

Yes. Spray it on, leave it briefly, and then try again. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; omitted nut is recoverable)

Common Mistakes

1. Copying English with before the instrument

❌ ช่างด้วยสว่านเจาะผนังครับ

Incorrect order; ด้วย does not introduce the tool before the action in this frame.

✅ ช่างใช้สว่านเจาะผนังหลังชั้นวางของครับ

chang chai sawan cho phanang lang chan wang khong khrap

The technician used a drill on the wall behind the shelf. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

2. Treating the patient as the instrument

❌ พนักงานใช้เอกสารเครื่องสแกนตรวจค่ะ

Incorrect role order; the document is checked or scanned, while the scanner is used.

✅ พนักงานใช้เครื่องสแกนตรวจเอกสารชุดนี้ค่ะ

phanak ngan chai khrueang sakaen truat ekkasan chut ni kha

The employee uses a scanner to check this set of documents. (formal-neutral workplace report, female speaker)

3. Adding an English infinitive marker

❌ ผมใช้แอปเป็นโอนเงินค่าเช่าครับ

Incorrect—เป็น is not an infinitive marker between the selected instrument and the action.

✅ ผมใช้แอปธนาคารโอนเงินค่าเช่าครับ

phom chai aep thanakhan on ngoen kha chao khrap

I use the banking app to transfer the rent. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

4. Misplacing simple negation inside the instrument phrase

❌ ผมใช้ไม่ค้อนตอกตะปูครับ

Incorrect order for denying hammer use; ไม่ได้ precedes ใช้ in this event-denial reading.

✅ ผมไม่ได้ใช้ค้อนตอกตะปูตัวนี้ครับ

phom mai dai chai khon tok tapu tua ni khrap

I did not use a hammer to drive in this nail. (ordinary polite correction, male speaker)

5. Repeating the same instrument as both ใช้ object and ด้วย phrase

❌ เขาใช้กุญแจเปิดประตูด้วยกุญแจครับ

Redundant for one neutral event; the same key is introduced twice.

✅ เขาใช้กุญแจสำรองเปิดประตูหลังครับ

khao chai kunchae samrong poet pratu lang khrap

He used the spare key to open the back door. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • ใช้ + instrument + action + patient promotes deliberate tool selection into a predicate chain.
  • The instrument is selected by ใช้; the following action independently selects its patient.
  • ด้วย + instrument adds the means after the action, while formal โดยใช้ packages a method.
  • An instrument may be topicalized with a generic operator, but it does not thereby become an agent.
  • Negation and later results or beneficiaries receive their scope from position, not from verb inflection.
