Thai ใช้ is an invariant verb whose central idea is putting a tool or resource to a purpose. That resource may be an object, a method, a language, time, money, labor, or a service. It also heads the instrumental sequence ใช้ + instrument + action + affected object, as in ใช้กรรไกรตัดกระดาษ “use scissors to cut paper.”
English divides this territory among use, employ, spend, and take. Thai keeps ใช้ and lets the noun and construction identify the relation. The challenge is therefore participant order and scope, not conjugation.
Selecting a tool, resource, or method
The thing selected for a purpose follows ใช้ directly. A following predicate can state that purpose; it is not an English infinitive.
| Frame | Role of the complement | Natural model |
|---|---|---|
| ใช้ + tool/resource | thing put to use | ใช้โทรศัพท์เครื่องนี้ |
| ใช้ + instrument + action + patient | tool for a following action | ใช้มีดหั่นผัก |
| ใช้เวลา + duration + event | time spent on an event | ใช้เวลาหนึ่งชั่วโมงตรวจงาน |
| event + ใช้เวลา + duration | duration required by an event | เดินทางใช้เวลาสองชั่วโมง |
| ใช้เงิน/งบประมาณ + amount/purpose | money expended | ใช้เงินกับค่าซ่อม |
ฉันใช้แอปนี้จัดตารางนัดหมายค่ะ
chan chai aep ni chat tarang natmai kha
I use this app to organize appointments. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; tool plus purpose)
ร้านนี้ใช้วัตถุดิบจากเกษตรกรในพื้นที่ครับ
ran ni chai watthudip chak kasettrakon nai phuenthi khrap
This restaurant uses ingredients from local farmers. (formal-polite description, male speaker; resource)
ประชุมครั้งนี้ใช้ภาษาไทยเป็นหลักค่ะ
prachum khrang ni chai phasa thai pen lak kha
This meeting mainly uses Thai. (formal-polite workplace statement, female speaker; language as medium)
English often adds for or to before a purpose: “use the app to book.” Thai can simply say ใช้แอปจอง. That adjacency expresses an instrumental relation because the lexical roles fit it; it does not turn จอง into an infinitive form.
Instrument–action chains
In the productive order ใช้ + instrument + action + patient, the instrument noun phrase stays together. Classifiers and demonstratives belong inside it: ใช้มีดเล่มนี้เปิดกล่อง “use this knife to open the box.”
พ่อใช้ประแจอันเล็กขันน็อตใต้โต๊ะครับ
pho chai prachae an lek khan not tai to khrap
Father uses the small wrench to tighten the nut under the table. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
ฉันใช้ผ้าผืนนี้เช็ดน้ำบนพื้นค่ะ
chan chai pha phuen ni chet nam bon phuen kha
I'm using this cloth to wipe the water off the floor. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
เราใช้รหัสนี้เปิดประตูด้านหลังได้ครับ
rao chai rahat ni poet pratu dan lang dai khrap
We can use this code to open the back door. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
Thai also permits action + patient + ด้วย + instrument, which profiles the action first: เปิดกล่องด้วยมีด “open the box with a knife.” The two frames arrange information differently; neither is a word-for-word copy of English with. See instrument verbs.
Spending time, money, and effort
With เวลา, ใช้ can describe either what a person spends or what an event requires. The surrounding subject distinguishes them. ผมใช้เวลาสองชั่วโมงตรวจรายงาน starts with the person spending time; การตรวจรายงานใช้เวลาสองชั่วโมง starts with the task taking time.
ผมใช้เวลาสามชั่วโมงเตรียมเอกสารทั้งหมดครับ
phom chai wela sam chua mong triam ekkasan thangmot khrap
I spent three hours preparing all the documents. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker)
จากสถานีไปโรงแรมใช้เวลาประมาณยี่สิบนาทีค่ะ
chak sathani pai rongraem chai wela praman yi sip nathi kha
It takes about twenty minutes to get from the station to the hotel. (ordinary polite information, female speaker)
ปีนี้บริษัทใช้เงินกับการซ่อมอุปกรณ์มากขึ้นครับ
pi ni borisat chai ngoen kap kan som uppakon mak khuen khrap
This year the company is spending more money on equipment repairs. (formal-polite business report, male speaker)
ใช้แรง “use force/effort,” ใช้พลังงาน “consume energy,” and ใช้ทรัพยากร “use resources” follow the same selection logic. Duration and amount expressions measure what is spent; they are not tense markers.
Employing people and established extensions
ใช้ can take a person or labor as the resource. ใช้คนทำงาน “use people to do work” is possible, and ใช้ลูกน้องไปซื้อของ “send/order a subordinate to buy something” presents a hierarchical errand frame. With an identifiable employee or social equal, this use may sound objectifying or commanding. จ้าง “hire,” ขอให้ “ask,” or ให้ “have/let” may better match the intended relationship.
ร้านใช้ช่างภายนอกซ่อมระบบไฟครับ
ran chai chang phainok som rabop fai khrap
The shop uses an outside technician to repair the electrical system. (formal-neutral business description, male speaker)
หัวหน้าใช้ลูกน้องไปส่งเอกสารค่ะ
hua na chai luk nong pai song ekkasan kha
The supervisor sent a subordinate to deliver documents. (ordinary report, female speaker; hierarchical errand frame)
The second example describes an authority relation and can sound critical. It is not the neutral way to make a polite request directly to the subordinate.
| Combination | Usual meaning | Register |
|---|---|---|
| ใช้งาน | use, operate; be in service | neutral to technical |
| ใช้บริการ | use a service | neutral to formal |
| ใช้จ่าย | spend money | neutral to formal |
| ใช้สิทธิ | exercise a right | formal |
| ใช้ชีวิต | live one's life / spend a period living | neutral |
| ใช้หมด | use all of something up | neutral |
ลูกค้าสามารถใช้บริการได้ถึงสองทุ่มค่ะ
luk kha samat chai borikan dai thueng song thum kha
Customers can use the service until eight in the evening. (formal service information, female voice)
อย่าใช้รหัสผ่านเดียวกันทุกบัญชีนะครับ
ya chai rahat phan diao kan thuk banchi na khrap
Don't use the same password for every account. (ordinary polite advice, male speaker)
The unchanged headword in different environments
ใช้ remains identical with every subject and time frame.
| Environment | Thai pattern | What supplies the interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| past context | เมื่อวานผมใช้รถของพี่ | เมื่อวาน locates the use earlier |
| ongoing use | ฉันกำลังใช้ห้องประชุม | กำลัง presents the activity in progress |
| resource exhausted | เขาใช้กระดาษหมดแล้ว | หมดแล้ว presents the endpoint |
| future choice | พวกเราจะใช้แผนสำรอง | จะ presents a later selection |
| negative habit | เขาไม่ใช้เงินสด | ไม่ precedes the denied habit |
เมื่อวานผมใช้รถของพี่ไปส่งของครับ
muea wan phom chai rot khong phi pai song khong khrap
Yesterday I used my older sibling's car to make a delivery. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
ตอนนี้ฉันกำลังใช้ห้องประชุมอยู่ค่ะ
ton ni chan kamlang chai hong prachum yu kha
I'm using the meeting room right now. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker)
เขาใช้กระดาษสีหมดแล้วครับ
khao chai kradat si mot laeo khrap

ถ้าระบบหลักขัดข้อง พวกเราจะใช้แผนสำรองค่ะ
tha rabop lak khatkhong phuak rao cha chai phaen samrong kha
If the main system fails, we'll use the backup plan. (formal-polite workplace statement, female speaker)
No tense ending attaches to ใช้. หมด contributes exhaustion of a resource, while แล้ว presents that endpoint as reached.
Negation, usability, and omission
Keep three common orders separate: ไม่ได้ใช้ denies that use occurred, ใช้ไม่ได้ says use is impossible or something is unusable, and ใช้ไม่เป็น says the person lacks learned know-how.
วันนี้ผมไม่ได้ใช้เครื่องพิมพ์ครับ
wan ni phom mai dai chai khrueang phim khrap
I didn't use the printer today. (ordinary polite correction, male speaker; occurrence denied)
บัตรใบนี้ใช้ไม่ได้แล้วค่ะ
bat bai ni chai mai dai laeo kha
This card can no longer be used. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; usability denied)
คุณตาใช้แอปธนาคารไม่เป็นครับ
khun ta chai aep thanakhan mai pen khrap
Grandfather doesn't know how to use the banking app. (ordinary polite family report, male speaker; know-how denied)
After ขอใช้เครื่องนี้ได้ไหมคะ, a reply ใช้ได้ครับ works because the machine is recoverable. Without a salient resource, bare ใช้ leaves the listener asking what is used.
Polite workplace dialogue
ห้องนี้ใช้ประชุมตอนบ่ายได้ไหมคะ
hong ni chai prachum ton bai dai mai kha
Can this room be used for a meeting this afternoon? (ordinary polite workplace question, female speaker)
ใช้ได้ครับ แต่ต้องจองผ่านระบบก่อน
chai dai khrap tae tong chong phan rabop kon
It can, but you need to reserve it through the system first. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; room omitted recoverably)
ระบบนี้ใช้ยังไงคะ

ใช้รหัสพนักงานเข้าสู่ระบบครับ
chai rahat phanak ngan khao su rabop khrap
Use your employee ID to log in. (ordinary polite instruction, male speaker)
Common Mistakes
1. Scrambling instrument and affected object
❌ ฉันใช้ผักมีดหั่นค่ะ
Incorrect participant order—ผัก is what gets cut, not the instrument used.
✅ ฉันใช้มีดเล่มเล็กหั่นผักค่ะ
chan chai mit lem lek han phak kha
I use a small knife to cut vegetables. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
2. Inserting an English-style infinitive marker
❌ ผมใช้คอมพิวเตอร์เป็นเขียนรายงานครับ
Incorrect—เป็น does not link the instrument to the following action.
✅ ผมใช้คอมพิวเตอร์เขียนรายงานประจำสัปดาห์ครับ
phom chai khomphiotoe khian raingan pracham sapda khrap
I use a computer to write the weekly report. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker)
3. Reversing the time-spending frame
❌ งานนี้ใช้สองชั่วโมงเวลาทำค่ะ
Incorrect neutral duration order—เวลา precedes the duration measure.
✅ งานนี้ใช้เวลาทำประมาณสองชั่วโมงค่ะ
ngan ni chai wela tham praman song chua mong kha
This task takes about two hours to do. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker)
4. Confusing event denial with unusability
❌ เครื่องเสีย ตอนนี้ผมไม่ได้ใช้ครับ
Wrong for the intended ‘I can't use it’; this only denies that use occurred.
✅ เครื่องเสีย ตอนนี้ผมใช้ไม่ได้ครับ
khrueang sia ton ni phom chai mai dai khrap
The machine is broken, so I can't use it now. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
5. Using hierarchical ใช้ for a polite request
❌ ฉันใช้คุณไปส่งเอกสารหน่อยค่ะ
Inappropriate for a polite request to a colleague—ใช้ + person can present that person as a subordinate resource.
✅ ช่วยเอาเอกสารไปส่งให้หน่อยได้ไหมคะ
chuai ao ekkasan pai song hai noi dai mai kha
Could you please deliver the documents for me? (ordinary polite request, female speaker)
Key Takeaways
- ใช้ + resource selects a tool, method, service, language, time, money, or labor for a purpose.
- ใช้ + instrument + action + patient is a participant-sharing chain, not an English infinitive construction.
- Context distinguishes spending time or money, employing a resource, and an event requiring a duration.
- ใช้ is invariant; time, aspect, exhaustion, possibility, and negation come from surrounding expressions.
- Keep ไม่ได้ใช้, ใช้ไม่ได้, and ใช้ไม่เป็น distinct, and use person-object ใช้ with care.
