ใช้ as Use, Spend, and Instrument Marker

Thai ใช้ selects something as a tool, resource, language, service, quantity of time, or money expenditure. It can also introduce an instrumental verb chain: ใช้มีดหั่นผัก “use a knife to cut vegetables.” In that construction, มีด is the object of ใช้ and the instrument for หั่น; ผัก is the object affected by หั่น.

English often adds with, by, to, or spend where Thai uses order around one unchanged ใช้. Keeping the participant roles straight is more important than finding a single English equivalent.

ฉันใช้โทรศัพท์เครื่องนี้ทำงานค่ะ

chan chai thorasap khrueang ni tham ngan kha

I use this phone for work. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

การประชุมครั้งนี้ใช้ภาษาไทยครับ

kan prachum khrang ni chai phasa thai khrap

This meeting uses Thai. (formal-polite workplace statement, male speaker)

ร้านนี้ใช้วัตถุดิบจากท้องถิ่นค่ะ

ran ni chai watthudip chak thongthin kha

This restaurant uses local ingredients. (formal-polite description, female speaker)

The noun after ใช้ is a resource selected for some purpose. The purpose may be stated by a following predicate or inferred from the setting. ใช้โทรศัพท์ทำงาน has two adjacent predicates, ใช้ and ทำงาน; there is no Thai infinitive marker equivalent to English to.

💡
First identify the object of ใช้: the tool or resource. Then ask what the next predicate affects. In ใช้มีดหั่นผัก, the knife is used, but the vegetables are cut.

Instrument + action chains

The productive order is ใช้ + instrument + action + affected object. Classifiers remain inside the instrument noun phrase when needed. The event normally shares one agent across ใช้ and the following action.

แม่ใช้มีดเล่มเล็กหั่นผลไม้ค่ะ

mae chai mit lem lek han phonlamai kha

Mother uses a small knife to cut fruit. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

ผมใช้กุญแจดอกนี้เปิดประตูหลังครับ

phom chai kunchae dok ni poet pratu lang khrap

I use this key to open the back door. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

เราใช้แอปนี้จองตั๋วรถไฟได้ค่ะ

rao chai aep ni chong tua rotfai dai kha

We can use this app to book train tickets. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

This sequence differs from a simple coordination “use the key and open the door.” The key is interpreted as the means of opening. Thai can also express instruments with ด้วย, but ใช้ + instrument + action foregrounds deliberate selection or use of the tool.

Using time

With a person as subject, ใช้เวลา + duration + activity says how long that person devotes. With an event or route as topic, ใช้เวลา + duration says how long the event takes.

ผมใช้เวลาสองชั่วโมงอ่านรายงานครับ

phom chai wela song chua mong an raingan khrap

I spent two hours reading the report. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

จากที่นี่ไปสนามบินใช้เวลาประมาณสี่สิบนาทีค่ะ

chak thi ni pai sanambin chai wela praman si sip nathi kha

It takes about forty minutes to get from here to the airport. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

งานนี้ใช้เวลานานกว่าที่คิดครับ

ngan ni chai wela nan kwa thi khit khrap

This job takes longer than expected. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

The duration comes after ใช้เวลา. Thai does not pluralize a unit after a number. Detailed duration and unit patterns appear under measurement expressions.

Using and spending money

ใช้เงิน means use or spend money. A following phrase can identify the category or purpose. จ่าย focuses payment to settle a price or bill, while ใช้เงิน focuses expenditure as use of a resource.

เดือนนี้ผมใช้เงินค่าเดินทางเยอะครับ

duean ni phom chai ngoen kha doen thang yoe khrap

I spent a lot on transportation this month. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

เราต้องใช้เงินอย่างระวังมากขึ้นค่ะ

rao tong chai ngoen yang rawang mak khuen kha

We need to use our money more carefully. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

โครงการนี้ใช้เงินน้อยแต่ใช้เวลามากครับ

khrongkan ni chai ngoen noi tae chai wela mak khrap

This project uses little money but takes a lot of time. (formal-polite assessment, male speaker)

The same ใช้ remains unchanged across เดือนนี้, future plans, and past reports. Time reference is external to the verb.

Negation and scope contrasts

ไม่ใช้ + object rejects using the resource. ไม่ได้ใช้ denies that use occurred. ใช้ไม่ได้ says the item cannot be used, while ใช้ไม่เป็น says someone lacks learned know-how.

วันนี้ฉันไม่ได้ใช้รถค่ะ

wan ni chan mai dai chai rot kha

I didn't use the car today. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; occurrence denied)

บัตรใบนี้ใช้ไม่ได้แล้วครับ

bat bai ni chai mai dai laeo khrap

This card can no longer be used. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; usability denied)

คุณยายใช้โทรศัพท์รุ่นนี้ไม่เป็นค่ะ

khun yai chai thorasap run ni mai pen kha

Grandmother doesn't know how to use this phone model. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; learned know-how denied)

These meanings come from order, not a conjugated negative form. Compare the wider ability system on ได้, เป็น, สามารถ, and ไหว.

💡
Keep the minimal set ไม่ได้ใช้ “did not use,” ใช้ไม่ได้ “cannot use/is unusable,” and ใช้ไม่เป็น “do not know how to use.” English couldn't use can hide all three distinctions.

Omission and discourse

After someone points to a machine, ใช้ได้ไหมคะ can mean “Can it be used?” or “May I use it?” Participants and setting select the reading. A reply ใช้ได้ครับ is natural because the machine is active in the discourse. Without such a topic, the omitted object is not recoverable.

เครื่องข้างหน้าว่างอยู่ ใช้ได้ไหมคะ

khrueang khang na wang yu chai dai mai kha

The machine in front is free. May I use it? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)

ใช้ได้ครับ แต่ต้องปิดเครื่องก่อนออก

chai dai khrap tae tong pit khrueang kon ok

Yes, but you must turn it off before leaving. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; machine omitted before ใช้)

Ordinary-polite dialogue

เครื่องนี้ใช้ยังไงคะ

khrueang ni chai yang ngai kha

How do I use this machine? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)

ใช้บัตรแตะตรงนี้ครับ แล้วกดปุ่มบนหน้าจอ

chai bat tae trong ni khrap laeo kot pum bon na cho

Tap your card here, then press the button on the screen. (ordinary polite instruction, male speaker)

ถ้าไม่มีบัตร ใช้โทรศัพท์ได้ไหมคะ

tha mai mi bat chai thorasap dai mai kha

If I don't have a card, can I use a phone? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)

ได้ครับ เปิดแอปแล้วใช้โทรศัพท์แตะตรงเดิม

dai khrap poet aep laeo chai thorasap tae trong doem

Yes. Open the app, then tap your phone in the same place. (ordinary polite instruction, male speaker)

Common Mistakes

1. Scrambling instrument, action, and affected object

❌ ฉันหั่นใช้มีดผักค่ะ

Incorrect neutral order—ใช้ introduces the instrument before the cutting action and its object.

✅ ฉันใช้มีดหั่นผักค่ะ

chan chai mit han phak kha

I use a knife to cut vegetables. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

2. Treating the affected object as the instrument

❌ ผมใช้รายงานเขียนคอมพิวเตอร์ครับ

Incorrect participant roles—this says the report is the thing used.

✅ ผมใช้คอมพิวเตอร์เขียนรายงานครับ

phom chai khomphiotoe khian raingan khrap

I use a computer to write reports. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

3. Using occurrence denial for present unusability

❌ เครื่องเสีย ตอนนี้ฉันไม่ได้ใช้ค่ะ

Wrong for intended 'I cannot use it now'; this merely denies that use occurred.

✅ เครื่องเสีย ตอนนี้ฉันใช้ไม่ได้ค่ะ

khrueang sia ton ni chan chai mai dai kha

The machine is broken, so I can't use it now. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

4. Putting the duration before เวลา

❌ ผมใช้สองชั่วโมงเวลาทำรายงานครับ

Incorrect neutral duration frame—use ใช้เวลา followed by the duration.

✅ ผมใช้เวลาสองชั่วโมงทำรายงานครับ

phom chai wela song chua mong tham raingan khrap

I spent two hours working on the report. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

5. Using English numeral order inside the instrument phrase

❌ แม่ใช้หนึ่งมีดหั่นขนมปังค่ะ

Incorrect noun-phrase order—หนึ่ง does not precede มีด like English 'a knife.'

✅ แม่ใช้มีดเล่มเล็กหั่นขนมปังค่ะ

mae chai mit lem lek han khanompang kha

Mother uses a small knife to slice bread. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • ใช้ + tool/resource selects what is employed; in ใช้ + instrument + action + object, the later object is what the action affects.
  • ใช้เวลา + duration measures devoted or required time; ใช้เงิน presents money as an expended resource.
  • ไม่ได้ใช้, ใช้ไม่ได้, and ใช้ไม่เป็น differ by scope and ability type.
  • ใช้ remains invariant; context, time/aspect expressions, omission, and verb-chain order build the full meaning.
