Thai can foreground deliberate tool selection with ใช้ + instrument + action + patient: ใช้มีดหั่นแตงกวา “use a knife to slice cucumber.” The instrument is the object of ใช้; the affected patient belongs to the following action. English often translates the same scene with with or use...to, but Thai has no infinitive marker between the predicates.
This page focuses on how the two local argument frames fit together inside one serial clause. The broader instrumental ใช้ guide compares more lexical senses and alternatives.
Tool selection followed by action
The productive frame is:
| Actor | ใช้ + instrument | Action + patient | Combined meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| ช่าง | ใช้ไขควง | ขันนอต | use a screwdriver to tighten a screw |
| พนักงาน | ใช้เครื่องสแกน | สแกนบัตร | use a scanner to scan a card |
| ฉัน | ใช้โทรศัพท์ | ถ่ายรูป | use a phone to take a photo |
| พ่อครัว | ใช้มีด | หั่นแตงกวา | use a knife to slice cucumber |
ช่างใช้ไขควงอันเล็กขันนอตใต้โต๊ะครับ
chang chai khai khuang an lek khan not tai to khrap
The technician uses the small screwdriver to tighten the screw under the table. (ordinary polite explanation, male speaker)
พนักงานใช้เครื่องสแกนเครื่องนี้สแกนบัตรประชาชนค่ะ
phanak ngan chai khrueang sakaen khrueang ni sakaen bat prachachon kha
The employee uses this scanner to scan identity cards. (formal-neutral workplace explanation, female speaker)
ฉันใช้โทรศัพท์ถ่ายรูปใบเสร็จไว้ค่ะ
chan chai thorasap thai rup bai set wai kha
I used my phone to photograph the receipt and keep the image. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
The actor is shared by ใช้ and the following action. ไขควง is selected by ใช้, while นอต is affected by ขัน. โทรศัพท์ is the instrument of using and รูปใบเสร็จ is the product of photographing. Word order and lexical valency identify these roles without case endings.
Minimal contrast with ด้วย
Thai can package nearly the same event by naming the action first and adding the means with ด้วย:
แม่ครัวใช้มีดเล่มยาวหั่นแตงโมค่ะ
mae khrua chai mit lem yao han taengmo kha
The cook uses a long knife to slice the watermelon. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; tool selected first)
แม่ครัวหั่นแตงโมด้วยมีดเล่มยาวค่ะ
mae khrua han taengmo duai mit lem yao kha
The cook slices the watermelon with a long knife. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; action and patient introduced first)
The ใช้ chain foregrounds choosing or employing the tool. The ด้วย phrase adds the means after the action. These are information-structure choices, not an absolute difference in truth. ด้วย also has comitative and additive uses elsewhere, so context—not a universal instrumental case—identifies the tool reading.
Longer chains and participant sharing
A direction or result may follow the action when it belongs to the same integrated event:
เขาใช้ผ้าผืนหนาเช็ดน้ำออกจากพื้นครับ
khao chai pha phuen na chet nam ok chak phuen khrap
He uses a thick cloth to wipe the water off the floor. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; tool, wiping, and removal result)
ช่างใช้คีมตัดลวดให้ขาดครับ
chang chai khim tat luat hai khat khrap
The technician uses pliers to cut the wire through. (ordinary polite instruction, male speaker; intended severing result)
พนักงานใช้รถเข็นขนกล่องเข้าไปในคลังค่ะ
phanak ngan chai rot khen khon klong khao pai nai khlang kha
The employee uses a trolley to carry the boxes into the storeroom. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; instrument, handling, and inward path)
Each predicate adds a relation in conceptual order. In the last example, the employee uses the trolley, carries the boxes, and moves them inward. The trolley is not the object carried into storage; the boxes are. The chain remains coherent because one actor controls the tool and action, while the boxes continue through the path.
Aspect, time, and omission
Thai does not conjugate either predicate. กำลัง...อยู่ can frame tool use as ongoing, and a time phrase can locate the unchanged chain earlier or later.
ตอนนี้ช่างกำลังใช้สว่านเจาะผนังอยู่ครับ
ton ni chang kamlang chai sawan cho phanang yu khrap
The technician is using a drill on the wall now. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; ongoing tool-use event)
เมื่อเช้าฉันใช้เครื่องพิมพ์เครื่องใหญ่พิมพ์ป้ายค่ะ
muea chao chan chai khrueang phim khrueang yai phim pai kha
This morning I used the large printer to print the sign. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; past time from เมื่อเช้า)
Once the patient is active, it can be omitted. After ต้องสแกนเอกสารชุดนี้ “We need to scan this document set,” a coworker can say ใช้เครื่องข้างหน้าสแกนได้ครับ “You can use the machine in front to scan it.” The documents remain understood; omission is licensed by discourse, not by ใช้ itself.
Negation and result scope
Initial ไม่ได้ใช้ denies choosing or employing that tool. Final negation can deny the action's result while preserving the attempt:
ผมไม่ได้ใช้มีดเปิดกล่องครับ ผมใช้กรรไกร
phom mai dai chai mit poet klong khrap phom chai kankrai
I didn't use a knife to open the box; I used scissors. (ordinary polite correction, male speaker)
กรรไกรเล่มนี้ใช้ตัดแผ่นพลาสติกไม่ขาดค่ะ
kankrai lem ni chai tat phaen phlatsatik mai khat kha
These scissors cannot cut through the plastic sheet. (ordinary polite assessment, female speaker; attempted function, failed result)
The second example does not simply deny all cutting. ไม่ขาด says the severing endpoint is unavailable. English didn't and cannot do not provide a template for Thai marker position.
Serial construction versus other ใช้ frames
Not every ใช้ followed by more material is an instrumental serial chain. ใช้เวลาสองชั่วโมงอ่านรายงาน means “spend two hours reading a report”; เวลา is a resource expended, not a physical tool. ใช้พนักงานเพิ่ม means employ additional staff. Established combinations and context determine the frame.
ทีมงานใช้เวลาสามวันตรวจข้อมูลทั้งหมดค่ะ
thim ngan chai wela sam wan truat khomun thangmot kha
The team spent three days checking all the data. (formal-neutral report, female speaker; time-resource use, not a tool)
Coordination also differs. ผมใช้คอมพิวเตอร์ แล้วเพื่อนพิมพ์รายงาน has two actors and two linked clauses; it is not the shared-actor instrumental chain ผมใช้คอมพิวเตอร์พิมพ์รายงาน.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
Two coworkers need to digitize a signed form:
เอกสารชุดนี้ต้องสแกนด้วยเครื่องไหนคะ
ekkasan chut ni tong sakaen duai khrueang nai kha
Which machine should we use to scan this document set? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
ใช้เครื่องข้างหน้าสแกนครับ ภาพชัดกว่า
chai khrueang khang na sakaen khrap phap chat kwa
Use the machine in front to scan it; the image is clearer. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
แล้วใช้แอปไหนส่งไฟล์ดีคะ
laeo chai aep nai song fai di kha
And which app would be best for sending the file? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
ใช้แอปของบริษัทส่งได้เลยครับ
chai aep khong borisat song dai loei khrap
You can use the company app to send it. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; file recoverable)
Common Mistakes
1. Putting the patient in the instrument slot
❌ ช่างใช้ผนังสว่านเจาะครับ
Incorrect for ‘use a drill on the wall’; ผนัง is the patient, not the selected instrument.
✅ ช่างใช้สว่านเจาะผนังครับ
chang chai sawan cho phanang khrap
The technician uses a drill on the wall. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
2. Inserting เป็น before the action
❌ ฉันใช้โทรศัพท์เป็นถ่ายรูปเอกสารค่ะ
Incorrect—เป็น is not an infinitive linker between the tool and its use.
✅ ฉันใช้โทรศัพท์ถ่ายรูปเอกสารค่ะ
chan chai thorasap thai rup ekkasan kha
I use my phone to photograph the document. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
3. Repeating the instrument with both frames
❌ เขาใช้คีมตัดลวดด้วยคีมครับ
Redundant in a neutral description—the same pliers are introduced twice.
✅ เขาใช้คีมตัดลวดครับ
khao chai khim tat luat khrap
He uses pliers to cut wire. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
4. Putting negation between ใช้ and its instrument
❌ ผมใช้ไม่ได้เครื่องนี้พิมพ์ป้ายครับ
Incorrect order for denying use of this machine.
✅ ผมไม่ได้ใช้เครื่องนี้พิมพ์ป้ายครับ
phom mai dai chai khrueang ni phim pai khrap
I didn't use this machine to print the sign. (ordinary polite correction, male speaker)
5. Giving one bare chain two unrelated actors
❌ ฉันใช้มีดเล่มนี้หั่นผลไม้พี่ใช้มีดอีกเล่มหั่นขนมปังค่ะ
Incorrect run-on for two independent actors; a bare chain does not mark where the subject changes.
✅ ฉันใช้มีดเล่มนี้หั่นผลไม้ ส่วนพี่ใช้มีดอีกเล่มหั่นขนมปังค่ะ
chan chai mit lem ni han phonlamai suan phi chai mit ik lem han khanompang kha
I used this knife to cut fruit, while my older sibling used another knife to slice the bread. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; two explicit clauses)
Key Takeaways
- ใช้ + instrument + action + patient foregrounds a selected tool and then its use.
- The actor is normally shared, while the tool and patient belong to different local predicate frames.
- action + patient + ด้วย + instrument adds the means after the action instead.
- Aspect and negation frame unchanged predicates; final negative results can preserve an attempted action.
- Resource and employment senses of ใช้ must not be mislabeled as physical instrument chains.
