ใกล้ and ไกล

Thai ใกล้ “near” and ไกล “far” can predicate distance directly or occur after locative อยู่. Their complement patterns are not perfectly symmetrical: ใกล้ + landmark is common without another relator, while ไกลจาก + landmark explicitly marks the point from which something is distant.

Both words also extend beyond physical distance. A task can be ใกล้เสร็จ “nearly finished,” an explanation can be ไกลจากความจริง “far from the truth,” and an issue can be ใกล้ตัว “close to home/relevant to everyday life.” Context and complement shape determine which scale is active.

Basic near and far frames

Thai offers both a property-like frame and an explicit location frame.

far from a landmarkfigure + (อยู่) + ไกลจาก + landmarkordinary explicit distance

ออฟฟิศใหม่อยู่ใกล้สถานีรถไฟฟ้าค่ะ

opfit mai yu klai sathani rot fai fa kha

The new office is near the skytrain station. (ordinary polite location statement, female speaker)

บ้านผมค่อนข้างไกลจากตัวเมืองครับ

ban phom khonkhang klai chak tua mueang khrap

My house is rather far from the city center. (ordinary polite distance assessment, male speaker)

โรงพยาบาลอยู่ไม่ไกลจากที่นี่ค่ะ เดินประมาณสิบนาที

rongphayaban yu mai klai chak thi ni kha doen praman sip nathi

The hospital is not far from here; it is about a ten-minute walk. (ordinary polite direction, female speaker)

The first two can omit อยู่ and function as distance predicates: ออฟฟิศใหม่ใกล้สถานี, บ้านผมไกลจากตัวเมือง. Adding อยู่ foregrounds location. Neither pattern uses เป็น, because proximity is not a class identity.

💡
Learn the ordinary asymmetry: ใกล้สถานี but ไกลจากสถานี. ใกล้กับ is possible, but จาก is the normal explicit source of distance after ไกล.

Minimal contrast and viewpoint

Near and far are relative judgments. The same distance may be near for a driver and far for someone walking. Thai can state the relevant viewpoint through a purpose, traveler, or comparison.

จากโรงแรม ร้านอาหารนี้ใกล้มากครับ เดินไม่ถึงห้านาที

chak rongraem ran ahan ni klai mak khrap doen mai thueng ha nathi

From the hotel, this restaurant is very close—less than a five-minute walk. (ordinary polite recommendation, male speaker)

ถ้าต้องพาเด็กเล็กไป ร้านนั้นไกลเกินไปค่ะ

tha tong pha dek lek pai ran nan klai koen pai kha

If we have to take a small child, that restaurant is too far. (ordinary polite assessment, female speaker)

จากโรงแรม establishes the reference point in the first example. The condition involving a child establishes a practical scale in the second. Without a stated standard, listeners infer one from the activity and shared geography.

จากตรงนี้ ที่จอดรถใกล้กว่าป้ายรถเมล์ครับ แต่ต้องข้ามถนน

chak trong ni thi chot rot klai kwa pai rot me khrap tae tong kham thanon

From here, the car park is closer than the bus stop, but you have to cross the road. (ordinary polite comparison, male speaker)

Comparative กว่า introduces the comparison standard. It does not change ใกล้ or require agreement. For exact distances, Thai often uses ห่างจาก + landmark + measurement; this page focuses on relative proximity rather than classifier measurement.

Degree and distance questions

Because ใกล้ and ไกล behave like gradable predicates, they combine with degree expressions.

ห้องพักอยู่ใกล้มากค่ะ มองเห็นจากตรงนี้เลย

hong phak yu klai mak kha mong hen chak trong ni loei

The accommodation is very close; you can see it from here. (ordinary polite location statement, female speaker)

สนามบินอยู่ไกลแค่ไหนครับ

sanambin yu klai khae nai khrap

How far away is the airport? (ordinary polite extent question, male speaker)

ตลาดอยู่ไกลออกไปอีกประมาณสองกิโลเมตรค่ะ

talat yu klai ok pai ik praman song kilomet kha

The market is about another two kilometers farther on. (ordinary polite route description, female speaker)

แค่ไหน asks for an extent; it does not mean exclusive “only.” ออกไป adds a directional extension away from the current viewpoint. The distance phrase follows the scale rather than behaving like an English adjective agreement ending.

Negative ไม่ไกล often reassures rather than giving a mathematically precise distance. In service speech, “not far” should be followed by a route or estimate if practical accessibility matters.

Movement toward and away from a reference point

With motion, ใกล้ can name an endpoint on a proximity scale: เข้ามาใกล้ “come closer.” ไกลออกไป extends away. Directional predicates carry the path; ใกล้/ไกล describe the resulting relation.

ช่วยขยับเก้าอี้เข้ามาใกล้โต๊ะอีกหน่อยได้ไหมคะ

chuai khayap kao i khao ma klai to ik noi dai mai kha

Could you move the chair a little closer to the table? (ordinary polite request, female speaker)

อย่าเดินไกลจากกลุ่มนะครับ เดี๋ยวหลงทาง

ya doen klai chak klum na khrap diao long thang

Please don't walk far from the group; you might get lost. (ordinary polite warning, male speaker)

English closer appears as one comparative adjective, whereas Thai can combine motion ขยับเข้ามา, the proximity predicate ใกล้, and degree อีกหน่อย. The pieces occur in conceptual order and remain uninflected. The directional ไป/มา guide explains the viewpoint component.

Abstract proximity

Distance provides a productive metaphor for time, completion, similarity, relevance, and truth.

ExpressionAbstract scaleRegister
ใกล้จะ + eventevent is approaching realizationordinary
ใกล้เสร็จ / ใกล้ถึงnear completion or arrivalordinary
ใกล้เคียงsimilar or approximately equalneutral / formal
ใกล้ตัวpersonally relevant, close to daily lifeordinary
ไกลจากความจริงfar from trueformal-neutral
ยังอีกไกลmuch progress remainsordinary / rhetorical

รายงานใกล้เสร็จแล้วครับ เหลือแค่ตรวจตัวเลข

raingan klai set laeo khrap luea khae truat tua lek

The report is nearly finished; only the figures remain to be checked. (ordinary polite progress update, male speaker)

ตัวเลขชุดนี้ใกล้เคียงกับผลของปีที่แล้วค่ะ

tua lek chut ni klai khiang kap phon khong pi thi laeo kha

These figures are close to last year's results. (formal-polite comparison, female speaker)

ข้อสรุปนั้นยังไกลจากความจริงมากครับ

kho sarup nan yang klai chak khwam ching mak khrap

That conclusion is still far from the truth. (formal-polite critical assessment, male speaker)

In ใกล้จะเสร็จ, จะ locates completion as prospective relative to now; it is not a future conjugation. แล้ว in ใกล้เสร็จแล้ว makes the new state of being near completion currently relevant. Neither turns ใกล้ into tense morphology.

Some expressions are lexicalized: ใกล้เคียง and ใกล้ชิด should be learned as established combinations, not produced by translating each English use of close word for word.

💡
Check what follows ใกล้: a landmark gives spatial nearness, จะ + event gives approaching realization, and a lexical partner such as เคียง or ชิด creates an established abstract expression.

Scope and omission

Place negation before the distance predicate: ไม่ไกลจากสถานี, “not far from the station.” The landmark can be omitted when active: ไกลไหมคะ — ไม่ไกลค่ะ. This omission is licensed by the question, not by a special intransitive conjugation.

จากจุดนี้ถึงทางออกไกลไหมคะ

chak chut ni thueng thang ok klai mai kha

Is it far from here to the exit? (ordinary polite route question, female speaker)

ไม่ไกลครับ เดินตรงไปแล้วเลี้ยวขวา

mai klai khrap doen trong pai laeo liao khwa

No, it isn't far. Walk straight and then turn right. (ordinary polite answer, male speaker; route endpoints recoverable)

Ordinary-polite dialogue

A guest asks about transport near a hotel.

โรงแรมอยู่ใกล้รถไฟฟ้าไหมคะ

rongraem yu klai rot fai fa mai kha

Is the hotel near the skytrain? (ordinary polite question, female guest)

ใกล้ครับ เดินไปสถานีประมาณเจ็ดนาที

klai khrap doen pai sathani praman chet nathi

Yes. It is about a seven-minute walk to the station. (ordinary polite answer, male staff member)

แล้วป้ายรถเมล์ไกลจากโรงแรมไหมคะ

laeo pai rot me klai chak rongraem mai kha

And is the bus stop far from the hotel? (ordinary polite follow-up, female guest)

ไม่ไกลครับ อยู่ฝั่งตรงข้ามนี่เอง

mai klai khrap yu fang trong kham ni eng

Not far—it's right across the street. (ordinary polite reply, male staff member)

Common Mistakes

1. Adding จาก after ใกล้ by symmetry

❌ ร้านอาหารอยู่ใกล้จากโรงแรมค่ะ

Incorrect ordinary complement pattern—ใกล้ takes the landmark directly or uses ใกล้กับ.

✅ ร้านอาหารอยู่ใกล้โรงแรมค่ะ

ran ahan yu klai rongraem kha

The restaurant is near the hotel. (ordinary polite location statement, female speaker)

2. Using กับ after ไกล

❌ บ้านเขาอยู่ไกลกับสถานีครับ

Incorrect distance relation—ไกล normally marks its reference point with จาก.

✅ บ้านเขาอยู่ไกลจากสถานีครับ

ban khao yu klai chak sathani khrap

His house is far from the station. (ordinary polite location statement, male speaker)

3. Inserting เป็น like English “is”

❌ ออฟฟิศเป็นใกล้สนามบินค่ะ

Incorrect predicate choice—proximity predicates directly or follows locative อยู่; it does not take เป็น.

✅ ออฟฟิศอยู่ใกล้สนามบินค่ะ

opfit yu klai sanambin kha

The office is near the airport. (ordinary polite location statement, female speaker)

4. Placing negation inside the landmark phrase

❌ ร้านอยู่ไกลไม่จากที่นี่ครับ

Incorrect scope and order—ไม่ negates the distance predicate before ไกล.

✅ ร้านอยู่ไม่ไกลจากที่นี่ครับ

ran yu mai klai chak thi ni khrap

The shop is not far from here. (ordinary polite reassurance, male speaker)

Key Takeaways

Use ใกล้ + landmark for nearness and ไกลจาก + landmark for explicit distance. Both can predicate directly or follow อยู่, take degree and comparison expressions, and extend to completion, relevance, similarity, or truth. Distance depends on a viewpoint and practical scale; it is not an inflected adjective or tense form.
