Thai ระหว่าง identifies an intermediate region, interval, relation, or choice. Spatially, อยู่ระหว่างธนาคารกับร้านขายยา means “be between the bank and the pharmacy.” Temporally, ระหว่างประชุม means “during the meeting.” Abstractly, ความแตกต่างระหว่างสองแบบ means “the difference between the two versions.”
English divides between, among, and during into separate words. Thai extends one relational base across these domains, with complement shape and predicate meaning selecting the reading.
Between two spatial landmarks
The clearest spatial frame is figure + อยู่ + ระหว่าง + landmark A + กับ + landmark B. The figure is located in the region bounded by the two landmarks.
ร้านหนังสืออยู่ระหว่างธนาคารกับร้านขายยาค่ะ

The bookshop is between the bank and the pharmacy. (ordinary polite direction, female speaker)
ที่นั่งของผมอยู่ระหว่างทางเดินกับหน้าต่างครับ

มีทางเดินแคบ ๆ อยู่ระหว่างบ้านสองหลังค่ะ

There is a narrow walkway between the two houses. (ordinary polite spatial description, female speaker)
The first two name separate endpoints with A กับ B. The third packages them as one plural expression, บ้านสองหลัง. Thai does not require an article before either landmark, and ระหว่าง does not agree with number.

กับ versus และ between endpoints
กับ is the ordinary coordinator inside ระหว่าง A กับ B. และ occurs in formal and academic writing (formal/academic), especially with institutional parties or carefully balanced categories.
การเจรจาระหว่างบริษัทกับชุมชนจะเริ่มพรุ่งนี้ครับ

Talks between the company and the community will begin tomorrow. (formal-neutral professional statement, male speaker)

The conjunction is internal to the complement of ระหว่าง. Do not combine และกับ. The choice of กับ or และ changes register more than the core two-endpoint relation.
More than two participants
Thai ระหว่าง is not limited to exactly two entities. With a plural group, it can describe internal relations among members. English often prefers among here.
โครงการนี้เกิดจากความร่วมมือระหว่างมหาวิทยาลัยสามแห่งค่ะ
khrongkan ni koet chak khwam ruam mue rawang mahawitthayalai sam haeng kha
This project grew out of cooperation among three universities. (formal-polite institutional statement, female voice)
ปีนี้มีการแข่งขันระหว่างผู้สมัครหลายคนครับ
pi ni mi kan khaengkhan rawang phu samak lai khon khrap
This year there is competition among many applicants. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
With personal social groups, ในหมู่ may be more idiomatic when the meaning is simply “among members of the group,” while ระหว่าง foregrounds relations, distribution, or boundaries internal to the set. There is no exact Thai grammatical split matching English between versus among.
Temporal intervals: during
Before an event noun or activity expression, ระหว่าง locates another event within its duration. ระหว่างการประชุม is careful and nominalized; compact ระหว่างประชุม is natural in everyday and workplace Thai.
กรุณาปิดเสียงโทรศัพท์ระหว่างการประชุมค่ะ
karuna pit siang thorasap rawang kan prachum kha
Please silence your phone during the meeting. (formal-polite instruction, female voice)
ผมเจอเพื่อนเก่าระหว่างเดินทางไปขอนแก่นครับ
phom choe phuean kao rawang doen thang pai khon kaen khrap
I met an old friend while traveling to Khon Kaen. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
ระหว่างทางฝนตกหนัก เราเลยแวะพักที่ปั๊มน้ำมันค่ะ
rawang thang fon tok nak rao loei wae phak thi pam namman kha
It rained heavily on the way, so we stopped at a petrol station. (ordinary polite travel narrative, female speaker)
ระหว่างทาง is a conventional “along the way/on the way” frame. A full subordinate clause instead takes ระหว่างที่, as in ระหว่างที่เรารอรถ “while we wait for the bus.” The ขณะที่ and ระหว่างที่ page explains that clause-linking contrast.
Aspect belongs to the events, not to ระหว่าง. กำลังแบ่ง presents distribution as ongoing; เจอ is a bounded encounter within a journey. English past or progressive morphology does not trigger a change in the relator.
Abstract relations and choices
Many nouns and predicates select ระหว่าง because their meaning involves two or more alternatives or participants.
เราต้องเลือกระหว่างลดค่าใช้จ่ายกับเลื่อนโครงการครับ
rao tong lueak rawang lot kha chai chai kap luean khrongkan khrap
We have to choose between cutting costs and postponing the project. (ordinary polite deliberation, male speaker)
ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างสองฝ่ายดีขึ้นมากค่ะ
khwam samphan rawang song fai di khuen mak kha
Relations between the two sides have improved greatly. (formal-polite assessment, female speaker)
ข้อตกลงนี้ใช้เฉพาะระหว่างผู้ซื้อกับผู้ขายครับ
kho toklong ni chai chapho rawang phu sue kap phu khai khrap
This agreement applies only between the buyer and the seller. (formal legal-style statement, male voice)
In the choice example, each endpoint is an event predicate. These are alternatives, not English infinitives: Thai verbs stay uninflected. In ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่าง..., the phrase modifies the relationship noun. Position follows the expression it narrows.
Scope and attachment
Where the ระหว่าง phrase sits affects what it modifies. คุยเรื่องงานระหว่างกินข้าว locates the conversation during the meal. คุยเรื่องความต่างระหว่างสองแผน makes the between-phrase part of the topic “differences between two plans.”
เราคุยเรื่องงบประมาณระหว่างกินข้าวกลางวันครับ
rao khui rueang ngoppraman rawang kin khao klang wan khrap
We discussed the budget over lunch. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; temporal attachment to the discussion)
เราคุยเรื่องความแตกต่างระหว่างสองแนวทางค่ะ
rao khui rueang khwam taektang rawang song naeo thang kha
We discussed the differences between the two approaches. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; abstract relation inside the topic)
Because Thai does not mark attachment with case endings, long sentences can become ambiguous. Move the time frame to the beginning or repeat the head noun when precision matters.
ระหว่างนี้ and ในระหว่างนี้
ระหว่างนี้ means “in the meantime/during this period” in ordinary usage. ในระหว่างนี้ is more formal and common in announcements or written instructions (formal). Here ระหว่าง behaves like an interval noun with a demonstrative rather than taking two endpoints.
ช่างกำลังตรวจเครื่องอยู่ค่ะ ระหว่างนี้เชิญนั่งรอก่อนได้
chang kamlang truat khrueang yu kha rawang ni choen nang ro kon dai
The technician is inspecting the machine. In the meantime, please have a seat. (ordinary polite service explanation, female speaker)
Adding ใน does not make an everyday sentence more grammatically complete; it mainly changes packaging and register.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
A visitor asks for a shop inside a station complex.
ร้านซ่อมโทรศัพท์อยู่ตรงไหนคะ
ran som thorasap yu trong nai kha
Where is the phone-repair shop? (ordinary polite question, female visitor)
อยู่ระหว่างร้านกาแฟกับทางเข้าชานชาลาครับ

The same relator first identifies a spatial interval, then a temporal interval.
Common Mistakes
1. Reversing figure and landmarks
❌ ร้านกาแฟอยู่ธนาคารระหว่างร้านขายยาค่ะ
Incorrect order—the relational base must introduce the landmarks.
✅ ร้านกาแฟอยู่ระหว่างธนาคารกับร้านขายยาค่ะ
ran kafae yu rawang thanakhan kap ran khai ya kha

2. Doubling conjunctions inside the pair
❌ ต้องเลือกระหว่างวันเสาร์และกับวันอาทิตย์ครับ
Incorrect coordination—choose กับ for ordinary speech or และ for formal pairing, not both.
✅ ต้องเลือกระหว่างวันเสาร์กับวันอาทิตย์ครับ
tong lueak rawang wan sao kap wan athit khrap
We have to choose between Saturday and Sunday. (ordinary polite planning, male speaker)
3. Mixing ที่ with an event nominalization
❌ ระหว่างที่การอบรม กรุณาอย่าเปิดเสียงโทรศัพท์ค่ะ
Incorrect mixture—ที่ introduces a clause, while การอบรม is an event noun.
✅ ระหว่างการอบรม กรุณาอย่าเปิดเสียงโทรศัพท์ค่ะ

4. Treating ระหว่าง as a two-place object with no second endpoint
