Thai หน้า, หลัง, and ข้าง are ordinary nouns meaning “front/face,” “back,” and “side,” but they also serve as relational bases: หน้าร้าน “in front of the shop,” หลังตึก “behind the building,” and ข้างลิฟต์ “beside the lift.” The landmark follows directly, without an English-style equivalent of of.
These forms also build deictic expressions such as ข้างหน้า “ahead” and abstract expressions such as ต่อหน้า “in the presence of.” The exact reading comes from the predicate, complement, and discourse—not from a change in the word's form.
The basic locative frame
To locate an identifiable entity, use figure + อยู่ + หน้า/หลัง/ข้าง + landmark. The figure is what you are locating; the landmark establishes the reference region.
| Relational base | Productive frame | Region selected |
|---|---|---|
| หน้า | figure + อยู่ + หน้า + landmark | in front of / at the front of |
| หลัง | figure + อยู่ + หลัง + landmark | behind / at the back of |
| ข้าง | figure + อยู่ + ข้าง + landmark | beside / at the side of |
| ข้าง ๆ | figure + อยู่ + ข้าง ๆ | nearby / next to the understood landmark |
| ด้านหน้า/ด้านหลัง | figure + อยู่ + ด้านหน้า/ด้านหลัง + landmark | the front/rear side or zone |
รถส่งของจอดอยู่หน้าร้านครับ
rot song khong chot yu na ran khrap
The delivery truck is parked in front of the shop. (ordinary polite location report, male speaker)
หลังอาคารมีที่จอดรถเล็ก ๆ ค่ะ
lang akhan mi thi chot rot lek lek kha
There is a small parking area behind the building. (ordinary polite existential description, female speaker)
ตู้กดน้ำอยู่ข้างลิฟต์ชั้นสองครับ
tu kot nam yu khang lip chan song khrap
The water dispenser is beside the lift on the second floor. (ordinary polite direction, male speaker)
The first and third locate known objects with อยู่. The second begins with a place frame and uses มี to introduce a new parking area. Thai does not use one generic form of English be for both jobs; compare the location order guide.
Compact forms versus ด้านหน้า and ด้านหลัง
Bare หน้า + landmark and หลัง + landmark usually identify an external region relative to the landmark. ด้านหน้า and ด้านหลัง explicitly name its front or rear side/zone and are useful in signs, building descriptions, and contrasts.
จุดรับบัตรอยู่ด้านหน้าอาคารค่ะ
chut rap bat yu dan na akhan kha
The ticket-collection point is at the front of the building. (formal-polite public direction, female voice)
ประตูด้านหลังโรงแรมปิดหลังสี่ทุ่มครับ
pratu dan lang rongraem pit lang si thum khrap
The rear door of the hotel closes after ten p.m. (ordinary polite information, male speaker)
In ด้านหลังโรงแรม, ด้านหลัง selects the rear part associated with the hotel. In the later หลังสี่ทุ่ม, หลัง is temporal “after,” not spatial “behind.” The form is unchanged; the complement type determines the relation.
ด้านหน้าของอาคาร is possible when explicitly discussing the building's front side, especially in careful prose. For a simple location, compact หน้าอาคาร or ด้านหน้าอาคาร is normally lighter. English the front of the building should not trigger ของ mechanically.
Deictic ข้างหน้า and ข้างหลัง
Without an overt landmark, ข้างหน้า points ahead or to the front region determined by the speaker's orientation, a vehicle, a queue, or a route. ข้างหลัง points behind. ข้าง ๆ means beside or nearby when the reference point is active.
เดินตรงไปอีกนิดค่ะ ห้องน้ำอยู่ข้างหน้า
doen trong pai ik nit kha hong nam yu khang na
Walk straight a little farther; the restroom is ahead. (ordinary polite direction, female speaker)
ช่วยวางกล่องไว้ข้างหลังเก้าอี้นะครับ
chuai wang klong wai khang lang kao i na khrap
Please put the box behind the chair. (ordinary polite request, male speaker)
ร้านขายยาอยู่ข้าง ๆ นี่เองค่ะ
ran khai ya yu khang khang ni eng kha
The pharmacy is right nearby. (ordinary polite discovery, female speaker)
The viewpoint must be recoverable. In a face-to-face direction, ข้างหน้า follows the travel direction; in a row of seats, it may mean the front row relative to the people. If two orientations compete, state the landmark: ข้างหน้ารถ “in front of the car.”
Category ambiguity
These words remain productive nouns outside location. หน้า can mean a face, a page, or a front surface; หลัง can mean a back and is also used in temporal expressions and classifier constructions; ข้าง can mean a side. This page does not turn every occurrence into a preposition.
กรุณาเซ็นชื่อที่หน้าสุดท้ายของสัญญาค่ะ
karuna sen chue thi na sutthai khong sanya kha
Please sign on the last page of the contract. (formal-polite instruction, female voice; หน้า means ‘page’)
กระเป๋าใบนี้มีช่องเล็กอยู่ข้างหลังครับ
krapao bai ni mi chong lek yu khang lang khrap
This bag has a small pocket at the back. (ordinary polite description, male speaker)
In the first example, หน้า is the counted/document part and ของสัญญา expresses possession. That does not license หน้าของร้าน for ordinary “in front of the shop.” In the second, ข้างหลัง names a deictically understood rear region.
Classifier uses of หลัง follow different number–classifier order and should be learned separately. Category is decided by construction, not by one English label.
Abstract extensions
Spatial orientation motivates several common abstract readings.
| Expression | Extension | Register |
|---|---|---|
| ต่อหน้า + person | in someone's presence | ordinary / formal-neutral |
| ลับหลัง + person | behind someone's back | ordinary, often negative |
| อยู่ข้าง + person/group | stand by or support | ordinary |
| เบื้องหลัง + event/result | behind the scenes; underlying source | formal / journalistic |
| ข้างหน้า | the future or work ahead | ordinary |
ถ้ามีปัญหา เราจะอยู่ข้างคุณนะคะ
tha mi panha rao cha yu khang khun na kha
If there is a problem, we'll stand by you. (supportive ordinary-polite statement, female speaker)
อย่าพูดถึงเพื่อนแบบนั้นลับหลังเขาครับ
ya phut thueng phuean baep nan lap lang khao khrap
Please don't talk about your friend like that behind his back. (ordinary polite admonition, male speaker)
ทีมวิจัยคือผู้อยู่เบื้องหลังความสำเร็จครั้งนี้
thim wichai khue phu yu bueang lang khwam samret khrang ni
The research team was behind this success. (formal public acknowledgment)
These are conventional extensions. อยู่ข้างคุณ does not merely specify physical adjacency, and เบื้องหลังความสำเร็จ does not locate a person behind an object. Context and lexical collocation select the abstract reading.
Position, scope, and time
A locative phrase normally follows the location predicate or event it modifies: รอหน้าร้าน, วางไว้ข้างประตู. It can be fronted as a place frame when the location is already identifiable: หลังอาคาร มีทางออกฉุกเฉิน.
Temporal หลัง + event/time means “after,” while full after-clauses use forms such as หลังจากที่. Do not treat spatial หลังตึก as a shortened tense marker. The before-and-after guide covers temporal event order.
พรุ่งนี้รอผมตรงหน้าสถานีนะครับ
phrung ni ro phom trong na sathani na khrap
Tomorrow, please wait for me right in front of the station. (ordinary polite arrangement, male speaker)
พรุ่งนี้ supplies future time; หน้า supplies place. Neither word inflects, and no English tense auxiliary belongs inside the locative phrase.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
A visitor asks where to meet outside an office building.
จุดนัดพบอยู่ตรงไหนคะ
chut nat phop yu trong nai kha
Where is the meeting point? (ordinary polite question, female visitor)
อยู่หน้าตึกครับ ข้างร้านกาแฟเล็ก ๆ
yu na tuek khrap khang ran kafae lek lek
It's in front of the building, beside the small coffee shop. (ordinary polite answer, male staff member)
ถ้าฝนตก ขอไปรอด้านหลังได้ไหมคะ
tha fon tok kho pai ro dan lang dai mai kha
If it rains, may I wait at the back instead? (ordinary polite question, female visitor)
ได้ครับ ประตูข้างหลังเปิดถึงหกโมงเย็น
dai khrap pratu khang lang poet thueng hok mong yen
Yes. The rear door is open until six p.m. (ordinary polite reply, male staff member)
The building stays recoverable, so ด้านหลัง and ข้างหลัง can omit a repeated landmark.
Common Mistakes
1. Copying English landmark–preposition order
❌ รถจอดอยู่ร้านข้างค่ะ
Incorrect order—the relational base precedes its landmark.
✅ รถจอดอยู่ข้างร้านค่ะ
rot chot yu khang ran kha
The car is parked beside the shop. (ordinary polite location report, female speaker)
2. Omitting the location predicate in a full assertion
❌ ตู้เอกสารข้างประตูครับ
Only a noun phrase or fragment in isolation; it does not clearly assert the cabinet's location.
✅ ตู้เอกสารอยู่ข้างประตูครับ
tu ekkasan yu khang pratu khrap
The filing cabinet is beside the door. (ordinary polite location statement, male speaker)
3. Adding ของ mechanically after the relational base
❌ เรารอกันอยู่หน้าของโรงแรมค่ะ
Unnatural ordinary location—English ‘of the hotel’ does not require ของ here.
✅ เรารอกันอยู่หน้าโรงแรมค่ะ
rao ro kan yu na rongraem kha
We're waiting in front of the hotel. (ordinary polite location update, female speaker)
4. Mixing spatial and full-clause after patterns
❌ หลังที่ลูกค้ากลับ เราปิดร้านครับ
Incorrect standard linker for a full event clause—use หลังจากที่ or a compact หลัง + event.
✅ หลังจากที่ลูกค้ากลับ เราก็ปิดร้านครับ
lang chak thi luk kha klap rao ko pit ran khrap
After the customer left, we closed the shop. (ordinary polite event sequence, male speaker)
Key Takeaways
Use หน้า/หลัง/ข้าง + landmark after อยู่ or an event predicate to locate a figure relative to that landmark. ด้านหน้า/ด้านหลัง name an explicit side or zone; ข้างหน้า/ข้างหลัง/ข้าง ๆ can rely on a shared viewpoint. Recognize noun, temporal, and abstract uses from their construction instead of forcing every occurrence into one English preposition.
