The Structural Difference between เป็น and คือ

The most useful first distinction is semantic: เป็น assigns a subject to a class, profession, role, or named state, while คือ identifies what or who a description refers to. English can translate both with be, so translating the verb alone cannot choose the Thai construction.

This contrast is strong but not absolute. A noun phrase can sometimes be understood either as a category or as an identifying description. Thai speakers then choose the form that matches the information structure they want—not an inflected form of be.

เป็น answers “what kind or role?”

With เป็น, the complement characterizes the subject. It says what class the subject belongs to or what role the subject performs.

คุณสมชายเป็นช่างไฟครับ

khun somchai pen chang fai khrap

Khun Somchai is an electrician. (ordinary polite characterization, male speaker; profession)

วันนี้พี่สาวฉันเป็นคนรับโทรศัพท์ค่ะ

wan ni phi sao chan pen khon rap thorasap kha

Today my older sister is the one answering the phone. (ordinary polite characterization, female speaker; temporary role)

อาคารหลังนี้เป็นหอสมุดเก่าครับ

akhan lang ni pen hosamut kao khrap

This building is an old library. (formal-neutral classification, male speaker; function/type)

No article appears before the profession or role. ช่างไฟ is simply the class assigned to Khun Somchai; Thai does not insert a counterpart of English an.

คือ answers “which one or who exactly?”

With คือ, the expression before it is resolved by the expression after it. The construction is central to identity, equation, definition, and explicit explanation.

ช่างที่มาซ่อมไฟคือคุณสมชายครับ

chang thi ma som fai khue khun somchai khrap

The technician who came to repair the wiring is Khun Somchai. (ordinary polite identification, male speaker)

คนรับโทรศัพท์วันนี้คือคุณอรค่ะ

khon rap thorasap wan ni khue khun on kha

The person answering the phone today is Khun On. (ordinary polite identification, female speaker)

สาเหตุหลักคือสายไฟชำรุดครับ

sahet lak khue sai fai chamrut khrap

The main cause is damaged wiring. (formal-neutral explanation, male speaker)

The first pair shows the clearest contrast: คุณสมชายเป็นช่างไฟ assigns a profession to a known person; ช่างที่มาซ่อมไฟคือคุณสมชาย identifies which person satisfies a description.

💡
Track the direction of information. known person → role/class favors เป็น. known description/role → exact person or value favors คือ.

The same nouns can support two construals

Consider a room. A speaker describing its assigned function can use เป็น. A speaker pointing out which room in a hallway is the meeting room can use คือ.

ห้องด้านในเป็นห้องประชุมเล็กค่ะ

hong dan nai pen hong prachum lek kha

The inner room is a small meeting room. (ordinary polite classification, female speaker; function with เป็น)

ห้องที่อยู่ข้างลิฟต์คือห้องประชุมของเราค่ะ

hong thi yu khang lip khue hong prachum khong rao kha

The room beside the elevator is our meeting room. (ordinary polite identification, female speaker; identity with คือ)

Likewise, คุณนิดเป็นหัวหน้าทีม categorizes Khun Nit by her role. หัวหน้าทีมคือคุณนิด identifies the holder of that role. In a context where a speaker forcefully identifies Khun Nit as the manager, คุณนิดคือผู้จัดการ can also be natural. That does not erase the central contrast; the definiteness and discourse purpose of ผู้จัดการ have shifted it toward an identifying value.

สำหรับโครงการนี้ คุณนิดคือผู้ตัดสินใจคนสุดท้ายค่ะ

samrap khrongkan ni khun nit khue phu tatsinchai khon sutthai kha

For this project, Khun Nit is the final decision-maker. (formal-neutral emphatic identification, female speaker)

This overlap is a genuinely difficult area. There is no mechanical rule based only on whether a noun denotes a person. Context determines whether the noun is presented as a class or as an exact identity.

A practical substitution table

Meaning intendedProductive patternModel
profession/classperson + เป็น + class nounเขาเป็นสถาปนิก
temporary roleperson + เป็น + roleวันนี้ผมเป็นคนขับรถ
identify a role-holderrole-description + คือ + personคนขับรถคือคุณเอก
identify an item/valuetopic + คือ + exact valueคำตอบคือข้อสาม
state a propertysubject + propertyรถคันนี้ใหม่
locate a known entityentity + อยู่ + placeรถอยู่หลังอาคาร
introduce an entityplace + มี + entityหลังอาคารมีรถหนึ่งคัน

The bottom three rows matter as much as the first four. Thai does not force a choice between เป็น and คือ whenever English contains be. Sometimes the right answer is neither.

รถของบริษัทคันนี้ใหม่มากครับ

rot khong borisat khan ni mai mak khrap

This company car is very new. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; bare property predicate)

รถของบริษัทอยู่หลังอาคารค่ะ

rot khong borisat yu lang akhan kha

The company's car is behind the building. (ordinary polite information, female speaker; location with อยู่)

หลังอาคารมีรถตู้ของบริษัทหนึ่งคันครับ

lang akhan mi rot tu khong borisat nueng khan khrap

There is one company van behind the building. (ordinary polite information, male speaker; existence with มี)

See zero property predication and location with อยู่ for these alternatives.

Negative forms converge on ไม่ใช่

For straightforward negative classification and negative identification, ordinary Thai normally uses ไม่ใช่.

คุณอรไม่ใช่พนักงานใหม่ค่ะ เธอทำงานที่นี่มาห้าปีแล้ว

khun on mai chai phanak ngan mai kha thoe tham ngan thi ni ma ha pi laeo

Khun On isn't a new employee; she has worked here for five years. (ordinary polite correction, female speaker)

คนที่ยืนหน้าห้องไม่ใช่ผู้บรรยายครับ

khon thi yuen na hong mai chai phu banyai khrap

The person standing in front of the room isn't the speaker. (formal-neutral correction, male speaker)

Do not create ไม่คือ. Also do not infer that ไม่เป็น is always impossible: it belongs to other meanings, including failure to become/be in a state and learned-skill expressions such as ขับรถไม่เป็น. For the nominal contrasts on this page, however, ไม่ใช่ is the dependable negative.

💡
The shared negative ไม่ใช่ does not make เป็น and คือ interchangeable in positive clauses. Negation denies the proposed classification or identity as a whole; the positive choice still reflects whether the speaker is characterizing or identifying.

Time does not change either copula. An earlier or later setting is supplied by a time phrase, discourse, or a prospective marker.

เมื่อก่อนอาคารนี้เป็นโรงพิมพ์ครับ

muea kon akhan ni pen rongphim khrap

This building used to be a printing house. (ordinary polite historical report, male speaker)

เดือนหน้าผู้ประสานงานจะเป็นคุณพิมค่ะ

duean na phu prasan ngan cha pen khun phim kha

Next month Khun Phim will be the coordinator. (ordinary polite preview, female speaker)

The second sentence uses จะเป็น because it presents entry into a later role. จะคือ is not a parallel future conjugation of คือ; equations are normally anchored by the surrounding time expression instead.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

Two staff members are checking an event schedule:

พรุ่งนี้ใครเป็นผู้ดูแลห้องใหญ่คะ

phrung ni khrai pen phu dulae hong yai kha

Who is serving as the person in charge of the large room tomorrow? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)

คุณชัยเป็นผู้ดูแลครับ ส่วนคนติดต่อหลักคือคุณพิม

khun chai pen phu dulae khrap suan khon titto lak khue khun phim

Khun Chai is in charge, and the main contact is Khun Phim. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; role then identity)

คุณพิมเป็นเจ้าหน้าที่ฝ่ายประชาสัมพันธ์ใช่ไหมคะ

khun phim pen chaonathi fai prachasamphan chai mai kha

Khun Phim is a public-relations officer, right? (ordinary polite confirmation, female speaker; class membership)

ใช่ครับ โต๊ะของเธอคือโต๊ะริมหน้าต่าง

chai khrap to khong thoe khue to rim natang

Yes. Her desk is the one by the window. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; exact identification)

Common Mistakes

1. Translating every English be with เป็น

❌ จุดรับบัตรเป็นโต๊ะหมายเลขสี่ค่ะ

Wrong for the intended exact identification of which table is the pickup point.

✅ จุดรับบัตรคือโต๊ะหมายเลขสี่ค่ะ

chut rap bat khue to mailek si kha

The card pickup point is table number four. (ordinary polite identification, female speaker)

2. Translating every English be with คือ

❌ ลูกชายผมคือทันตแพทย์ครับ

Marked for the intended neutral profession statement; คือ would make it an identifying equation.

✅ ลูกชายผมเป็นทันตแพทย์ที่คลินิกใกล้บ้านครับ

luk chai phom pen thantaphaet thi khlinik klai ban khrap

My son is a dentist at a clinic near our home. (ordinary polite characterization, male speaker)

3. Inserting either copula before a property

❌ ทางเดินนี้เป็นแคบมากค่ะ

Incorrect—แคบ is itself the predicate.

✅ ทางเดินข้างห้องเก็บของแคบมากค่ะ

thang doen khang hong kep khong khaep mak kha

The corridor beside the storage room is very narrow. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)

4. Making a negative คือ with ไม่

❌ ผู้โทรคนนี้ไม่คือคุณวิชัยครับ

Incorrect—negative identity uses ไม่ใช่.

✅ ผู้โทรคนนี้ไม่ใช่คุณวิชัยครับ

phu tho khon ni mai chai khun wichai khrap

This caller isn't Khun Wichai. (ordinary polite correction, male speaker)

5. Forcing an English article into a class predicate

❌ คุณอรเป็นหนึ่งนักวิจัยค่ะ

Incorrect for ‘a researcher’; Thai has no indefinite article in this frame.

✅ คุณอรเป็นนักวิจัยด้านอาหารค่ะ

khun on pen nak wichai dan ahan kha

Khun On is a food researcher. (formal-neutral characterization, female speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • Use เป็น to characterize a subject by class, role, or conventional state.
  • Use คือ to resolve identity, equation, value, or explicit explanation.
  • Context can shift the same noun phrase between a class reading and an identifying reading.
  • Use ไม่ใช่ for straightforward negative classification or identity, and use neither copula before an ordinary property or place.
