Bureaucratic and Legal Formulae | Thai Grammar

Thai administrative and legal prose identifies documents, responsible parties, conditions, deadlines, and consequences with highly conventional formulas. Learners should actively use transparent frames such as ตามที่, ขอแจ้ง, and โปรด, while treating specialized legal wording as recognition material unless a verified template governs the document. Reference and notification frames

ตามที่ + prior event/document establishes background already shared. The main clause then gives the present action. เรื่องดังกล่าว, เอกสารดังกล่าว, and ผู้ยื่นคำขอ maintain reference without conversational pronouns.

ได้ in ได้ยื่น is a formal perfective-like marker; it does not conjugate the verb. The explicit date anchors time.

Obligation, permission, and exception

Rules use ต้อง, ห้าม, สามารถ, มีสิทธิ, ให้ + predicate, and negative มิให้. ให้ in regulations can impose a directive: the responsible participant follows before or is recovered from the legal subject.

ผู้สมัครต้องแสดงหลักฐานตัวจริงในวันสัมภาษณ์

These forms encode scope through order. เฉพาะเวลาที่กำหนด limits permitted entry; moving เฉพาะ can shift what is restricted.

Dense participants and nominalization

Administrative prose turns actions into entities: การยื่นคำขอ, การพิจารณา, การอนุมัติ, การไม่ปฏิบัติตาม. This allows conditions and consequences to refer to whole processes.

การไม่ส่งเอกสารภายในกำหนดอาจทำให้การพิจารณาล่าช้า

Failure to submit the documents by the deadline may delay consideration. (formal administrative warning)

The agency will verify the accuracy of the information before approving the application. (formal administrative procedure)

Density does not justify ambiguity. Repeat the responsible party when a new actor enters; omit it only under secure continuity.

Closures and active-use boundary

จึงเรียนมาเพื่อทราบ is a conventional formal-letter closure meaning roughly “therefore, this is submitted for your information.” จึงเรียนมาเพื่อโปรดพิจารณา requests consideration. เรียน here is formal communicative “inform/address,” not “study.”

จึงเรียนมาเพื่อโปรดพิจารณา และขอขอบคุณมา ณ โอกาสนี้

This is respectfully submitted for consideration, with thanks on this occasion. (formal bureaucratic closure)

This full formula is inappropriate in a quick message to a colleague. Routine professional communication can say รบกวนช่วยพิจารณาไฟล์แนบด้วยครับ/ค่ะ.

รบกวนช่วยตรวจไฟล์แนบและแจ้งกลับภายในพรุ่งนี้นะคะ

Bureaucratic Thai usually omits sentence-final particles in the document body. A staff member explaining the same rule aloud naturally restores ครับ/ค่ะ.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

ในหนังสือเขียนว่าต้องยื่นภายในเจ็ดวัน นับจากวันไหนคะ

nai nangsue khian wa tong yuen phainai chet wan nap chak wan nai kha

The letter says it must be submitted within seven days. From which date is that counted? (ordinary polite question, female applicant)

Common Mistakes

1. Using a formal closure in casual chat

❌ เย็นนี้กินข้าวกันไหม จึงเรียนเพื่อมาโปรดพิจารณา

Incorrectly ordered formula, compounded by attaching an administrative submission frame to a friendly invitation.

✅ เย็นนี้ว่างไปกินข้าวด้วยกันไหม

yen ni wang pai kin khao duai kan mai

Are you free to have dinner together this evening? (informal invitation)

2. Treating หนึ่ง as an English article

❌ ผู้ยื่นหนึ่งต้องแนบสำเนาหนึ่ง

Incorrect article-like use; Thai counts and introduces nouns through context and classifier constructions.

✅ ผู้ยื่นคำขอต้องแนบสำเนาเอกสารหนึ่งชุด

phu yuen kham kho tong naep samna ekkasan nueng chut

The applicant must attach one set of document copies. (formal administrative requirement)

3. Leaving the deadline anchor vague

❌ โปรดส่งเอกสารเจ็ดภายในวันนับจากวันที่ได้รับหนังสือ

Incorrect word order: the deadline unit ภายในเจ็ดวัน must remain together.

✅ โปรดส่งเอกสารภายในเจ็ดวันนับจากวันที่ได้รับอีเมลนี้
