Standard Thai does not divide neatly into one spoken grammar and another written grammar. It has a continuum of styles. A chat message can represent relaxed speech in writing, while a prepared speech may use dense vocabulary and explicit organization associated with formal prose. Medium matters, but genre, audience, purpose, and planning matter more.
Moving toward formal writing normally changes several features together: lexical choices become more institutional, participants are named more explicitly, conversational particles recede, noun phrases become denser, and logical relations are stated. The verbs remain uninflected. Formality does not create articles, agreement, or English-style tense morphology.
The continuum, not a binary
| Dimension | Spontaneous conversation | Careful professional writing |
|---|---|---|
| reference | frequent zero, names, kin terms, turn-based “I/you” | agency, role, or noun repeated when responsibility matters |
| particles | นะ, สิ, ล่ะ, ครับ/ค่ะ organize turns | fewer interpersonal finals; genre formula may replace them |
| lexicon | บอก, ทำ, ดู, กิน | แจ้ง, ดำเนินการ, พิจารณา, รับประทาน where collocation fits |
| clause structure | short units, afterthoughts, repair, ellipsis | planned embedding, explicit connectors, integrated modifiers |
| event packaging | verb-centered | more nominalization: การพิจารณา, ความปลอดภัย |
| spacing and punctuation | voice supplies boundaries | spaces and punctuation mark larger units, not every word |
These are tendencies, not categorical rules. Formal interview answers contain ครับ/ค่ะ because they are spoken turns. A friendly work chat may use an official noun because that noun names the actual procedure.
เดี๋ยวดูเอกสารให้ค่ะ
diao du ekkasan hai kha
I'll look over the documents in a moment. (ordinary-polite spontaneous speech, female speaker)
คณะกรรมการจะพิจารณาเอกสารภายในวันศุกร์
khana kammakan cha phicharana ekkasan phainai wan suk
The committee will consider the documents by Friday. (formal written statement)
The second does not simply replace ดู with a longer word. พิจารณา implies evaluation, คณะกรรมการ identifies the responsible institution, and the deadline makes the sentence portable beyond the immediate room.
A minimal spoken–written contrast
Both examples communicate that a clinic must postpone an appointment because the doctor is unavailable.
วันนี้คุณหมอมาไม่ได้ค่ะ ขอเลื่อนนัดเป็นวันพฤหัสนะคะ
wan ni khun mo ma mai dai kha kho luean nat pen wan pharuehat na kha
The doctor can't come today. Could we move the appointment to Thursday? (ordinary-polite service conversation, female receptionist)
ทางคลินิกขอแจ้งเลื่อนนัดหมายเป็นวันพฤหัสบดี เนื่องจากแพทย์ไม่สามารถเข้าตรวจได้ตามกำหนด
thang khlinik kho chaeng luean natmai pen wan pharuehatsabodi nueang chak phaet mai samat khao truat dai tam kamnot
The clinic hereby notifies you that the appointment has been moved to Thursday because the physician cannot hold the consultation as scheduled. (formal written notice)
The spoken version uses คุณหมอ, short clauses, and ค่ะ/นะคะ to manage a live exchange. The notice uses institutional ทางคลินิก, แจ้ง, นัดหมาย, แพทย์, เนื่องจาก, and ตามกำหนด. It omits a final polite particle because the genre itself frames the statement; a customer-facing letter could add a closing courtesy elsewhere.
Both are Standard Thai. Calling the first “incorrect written Thai” would be wrong in a chat transcript, and calling the second “better Thai” would ignore its stiffness in face-to-face conversation.
Productive rewriting slots
| Communicative slot | Conversational resource | Careful written resource |
|---|---|---|
| source | เขา / zero | บริษัท / หน่วยงาน / คณะกรรมการ |
| speech act | บอกว่า... | แจ้งว่า... / ขอแจ้ง... |
| reason | เพราะ... | เนื่องจาก... / เนื่องด้วย... (formal) |
| procedure | ทำเรื่อง... | ดำเนินการ... (formal) |
| evaluation | ดู... | พิจารณา... (formal) |
| closing stance | นะครับ/นะคะ | จึงเรียนมาเพื่อทราบ (formal/bureaucratic, only in suitable correspondence) |
The table offers productive choices, not automatic substitutions. เพราะ also appears in good writing; เนื่องจาก does not elevate a casual message by itself. จึงเรียนมาเพื่อทราบ is a marked correspondence formula, not a universal formal equivalent of นะครับ.
หัวหน้าบอกว่าให้ส่งใหม่พรุ่งนี้ครับ
hua na bok wa hai song mai phrung ni khrap
The manager said to resubmit it tomorrow. (ordinary-polite workplace speech, male speaker)
ฝ่ายบริหารแจ้งให้ส่งเอกสารฉบับแก้ไขภายในวันพรุ่งนี้
fai borihan chaeng hai song ekkasan chabap kaekhai phainai wan phrung ni
Management has instructed that the revised document be submitted by tomorrow. (formal written instruction)
Omission and explicit reference
Conversation can rely on turn roles, gaze, and an active object. Writing must often survive a different time and place, so it repeats the actor or document when ambiguity would matter.
อ่านแล้วค่ะ กำลังแก้ตรงสรุปอยู่
an laeo kha kamlang kae trong sarup yu
I've read it and am revising the summary. (ordinary-polite spoken update, female speaker; speaker and document omitted)
ผู้วิจัยได้แก้ไขบทสรุปตามข้อเสนอแนะของคณะกรรมการแล้ว
phu wichai dai kaekhai bot sarup tam khosanoenae khong khana kammakan laeo
The researcher has revised the conclusion in accordance with the committee's recommendations. (formal academic-style statement)
The formal sentence names the actor, affected section, and source of the recommendation. ได้...แล้ว presents the event as realized and complete; it is not a conjugated perfect. Written Thai can omit participants too, but document readers need enough reference to assign responsibility.
The zero-anaphora guide gives the same recoverability test across registers.
Verb-centered and noun-centered packaging
Formal prose frequently packages actions or properties as nouns with การ and ความ. This supports dense modification and reference across sentences.
เราต้องตรวจระบบก่อนเปิดใช้งานครับ
rao tong truat rabop kon poet chai ngan khrap
We need to check the system before putting it into use. (ordinary-polite spoken planning, male speaker)
การตรวจสอบระบบก่อนเปิดใช้งานเป็นขั้นตอนสำคัญด้านความปลอดภัย
kan truat sop rabop kon poet chai ngan pen khanton samkhan dan khwam plotphai
System inspection before commissioning is an important safety procedure. (formal technical writing)
The nominalized version is denser, but density is not automatically superior. In a live exchange, it can hide who must act. In technical documentation, it lets the writer define a reusable procedure. See ความ nominalization for how properties become nouns.
Planned speech and conversational writing
Medium and style cross. A formal speech may say:
ดิฉันขอขอบคุณทุกท่านที่ให้ความร่วมมือในการดำเนินโครงการค่ะ
dichan kho khop khun thuk than thi hai khwam ruam mue nai kan damnoen khrongkan kha
I would like to thank everyone for cooperating in carrying out the project. (formal prepared speech, female speaker)
It is spoken aloud but uses formal self-reference, ทุกท่าน, noun-based ให้ความร่วมมือ, and การดำเนินโครงการ. Conversely, a chat message is written but can represent speech closely:
ถึงแล้วนะ รออยู่หน้าร้าน
thueng laeo na ro yu na ran
I'm here—waiting in front of the shop. (informal conversational writing; sender omitted)
The chat is not defective because it lacks ฉัน and formal punctuation. Its audience and shared situation license compression. Later register pages can teach volatile chat spellings; safe B1 production should retain standard spelling even in relaxed messages.
Ordinary-polite editing dialogue
A woman asks a male colleague to review a customer email.
ข้อความนี้เขียนว่าของยังไม่มา รอก่อนนะคะ ส่งให้ลูกค้าได้ไหมคะ
khokhwam ni khian wa khong yang mai ma ro kon na kha song hai luk kha dai mai kha
This message says, ‘The item isn't here yet; wait, okay?’ Can I send it to the customer? (ordinary-polite question quoting an overly conversational draft, female speaker)
ความหมายชัดครับ แต่ควรเขียนว่าสินค้ายังมาไม่ถึงและจะแจ้งกำหนดส่งอีกครั้ง
khwam mai chat khrap tae khuan khian wa sinkha yang ma mai thueng lae cha chaeng kamnot song ik khrang
The meaning is clear, but it should say that the goods have not yet arrived and that the delivery date will be communicated later. (ordinary-polite editorial advice, male speaker)
ต้องใส่คำว่าทางบริษัททุกประโยคไหมคะ
tong sai kham wa thang borisat thuk prayok mai kha
Do I need to put ‘the company’ in every sentence? (ordinary-polite follow-up, female speaker)
ไม่ต้องครับ ใส่ครั้งแรกให้ชัด แล้วละได้ถ้ายังเป็นผู้ดำเนินการรายเดิม
mai tong khrap sai khrang raek hai chat laeo la dai tha yang pen phu damnoenkan rai doem
No. State it clearly the first time, then omit it if the responsible party remains the same. (ordinary-polite explanation, male speaker)
The answer avoids both extremes: a written document needs an anchor, but repeating it mechanically in every clause is heavy.
Common Mistakes
1. Treating formal Thai as a separate tense system
❌ เมื่อวานหน่วยงานจะดำเนินการตรวจสอบแล้ว
Incorrect time-aspect package for the intended completed report—future-oriented จะ conflicts with the established yesterday event here.
✅ หน่วยงานดำเนินการตรวจสอบเมื่อวาน และจะแจ้งผลพรุ่งนี้
nuai ngan damnoenkan truat sop muea wan lae cha chaeng phon phrung ni
The agency carried out the inspection yesterday and will announce the result tomorrow. (formal written report; time words and จะ locate the events)
2. Inserting English articles into Thai noun phrases
❌ ทางบริษัทหนึ่งจะแจ้งผลให้ผู้สมัครหนึ่ง
Incorrect article-like use of หนึ่ง; Thai does not mechanically translate English ‘a’ after each noun.
✅ บริษัทจะแจ้งผลให้ผู้สมัครแต่ละรายทางอีเมล
borisat cha chaeng phon hai phu samak tae la rai thang imel
The company will notify each applicant of the result by email. (formal written statement with a purposeful distributive classifier phrase)
3. Leaving conversational particles in an official notice
❌ สำนักงานปิดวันจันทร์นะ รอวันอังคารก่อนสิ
Register mismatch for an official notice; the particles create a conversational appeal and urging stance.
✅ สำนักงานปิดทำการวันจันทร์และจะเปิดให้บริการตามปกติในวันอังคาร
samnakngan pit thamkan wan chan lae cha poet hai borikan tam pakati nai wan angkhan
The office is closed on Monday and will resume normal service on Tuesday. (formal public notice)
4. Repeating an English subject in every formal clause
❌ บริษัทได้รับคำขอแล้ว บริษัทจะตรวจสอบคำขอ และบริษัทจะแจ้งผลคำขอ
Needlessly repetitive once the company and request are securely established.
✅ บริษัทได้รับคำขอแล้ว จะดำเนินการตรวจสอบและแจ้งผลภายในห้าวันทำการ
borisat dai rap kham kho laeo cha damnoenkan truat sop lae chaeng phon phainai ha wan thamkan
The company has received the request and will review it and report the result within five business days. (formal written statement with controlled omission)
Key Takeaways
- Spoken and written Standard Thai form intersecting continua shaped by genre, audience, purpose, and planning.
- Formal writing often uses explicit actors, institutional lexicon, nominalization, and denser organization; it does not create inflection.
- Conversation and chat rely more heavily on turn context, particles, and omission, but can still contain formal terms when the event requires them.
- Rewrite the whole discourse package, not isolated words, and keep recognition of marked genres broader than safe active use.
