Thai เว้นแต่, เว้นแต่ว่า, and นอกจากว่า introduce an exception to a claim, rule, or plan: the main statement holds except under the stated condition. In เราจะไม่เปลี่ยนวันนัด เว้นแต่ลูกค้าจะขอ “we will not change the appointment unless the customer asks,” the customer’s request is the one circumstance that can overturn the policy.
English unless is often paraphrased as if not, but translating that formula mechanically causes scope errors. Thai exception linkers normally attach to a complete exceptional condition; negation in the main clause and จะ inside the exception retain their ordinary scope.
This page builds on the open ถ้า…ก็ conditional frame. The difference is informational: a ถ้า clause presents a condition directly, while an exception clause first presupposes a default that the stated circumstance can suspend.
The exception frame
The most common architecture states the rule or expected outcome first and places the exception afterward: main clause + เว้นแต่(ว่า)/นอกจากว่า + exception clause. Initial exceptions are possible, especially in careful instructions, but they frame the entire following statement.
| Linker | Productive continuation | Typical use | Register |
|---|---|---|---|
| เว้นแต่ + clause | (subject) + (จะ) + predicate | direct exception to a rule or prediction | neutral to formal |
| เว้นแต่ว่า + clause | subject + (จะ) + predicate | explicit clause boundary, especially in longer wording | neutral to formal |
| นอกจากว่า + clause | subject + (จะ) + predicate | “unless/except if,” often in careful explanation | neutral to formal |
| เว้นเสียแต่ว่า + clause | subject + (จะ) + predicate | strongly delimited sole exception | formal or emphatic |
ฉันจะไม่ยกเลิกนัด เว้นแต่หมอจะโทรมาค่ะ
chan cha mai yokloek nat wen tae mo cha tho ma kha
I won't cancel the appointment unless the doctor calls. (ordinary-polite statement, female speaker)
เราจะส่งของวันนี้ เว้นแต่ว่าระบบจะขัดข้องครับ
rao cha song khong wan ni wen tae wa rabop cha khat khong khrap
We'll ship the goods today unless the system malfunctions. (ordinary-polite contingency, male speaker)
ผมจะไม่ปรับราคา นอกจากว่าต้นทุนจะเพิ่มขึ้นมากครับ
phom cha mai prap rakha nok chak wa ton thun cha phoem khuen mak khrap
I won't adjust the price unless costs rise substantially. (formal-polite business statement, male speaker)
The exception can overturn a negative rule, as in “will not cancel,” or block a positive plan, as in “will ship today.” Do not assume that an exception linker itself supplies negation: its contribution is to carve out a case where the main claim does not apply.
Why จะ often appears in the exception
In เว้นแต่คุณจะขอ, จะ presents the exceptional event as a possibility under consideration. It is common but not a future-tense requirement. Stative and generic exceptions may appear without it, while planned or potential events often include it.
ห้ามเข้าห้องนี้ เว้นแต่ได้รับอนุญาตครับ
ham khao hong ni wen tae dai rap anuyat khrap
Do not enter this room unless permission has been granted. (formal-polite restriction, male voice; generic recipient omitted)
เราจะเดินทางตามแผน เว้นแต่ฝนตกหนักค่ะ
rao cha doen thang tam phaen wen tae fon tok nak kha
We'll travel as planned unless it rains heavily. (ordinary-polite plan, female speaker; no จะ required)
บริษัทจะไม่เปิดเผยข้อมูล นอกจากว่าศาลจะมีคำสั่งครับ
borisat cha mai poetphoei khomun nok chak wa san cha mi kham sang khrap
The company will not disclose the information unless a court issues an order. (formal-polite policy statement, male voice)
จะ belongs inside the exception clause, after its subject. It marks the contemplated issuance in the court example; it does not agree with English unless or with a tense in the main clause.
Shared and independent subjects
If the main-clause participant also performs the exceptional action, Thai may omit the lower subject.
ผมจะไม่เซ็น เว้นแต่จะได้อ่านฉบับสุดท้ายก่อนครับ
phom cha mai sen wen tae cha dai an chabap sut thai kon khrap
I won't sign unless I get to read the final version first. (formal-polite statement, male speaker; shared subject omitted)
If another actor controls the exception, name that actor.
ผมจะไม่เซ็น เว้นแต่ฝ่ายกฎหมายจะยืนยันเป็นลายลักษณ์อักษรครับ
phom cha mai sen wen tae fai kotmai cha yuenyan pen lai lak akson khrap
I won't sign unless Legal confirms it in writing. (formal-polite statement, male speaker; independent lower subject)
The two clauses do not require matching subjects. Omission is licensed by recoverability, not by an English infinitive rule. In a contract or compliance instruction, explicit role nouns are often preferable because a mistaken controller changes responsibility.
Initial exception clauses
An exception can precede its main clause. This order makes the carve-out the frame against which the following rule must be read and therefore sounds especially at home in (formal) policy prose.
เว้นแต่จะมีเหตุฉุกเฉิน ห้ามใช้ทางออกนี้ค่ะ
wen tae cha mi het chukchoen ham chai thang ok ni kha
Unless there is an emergency, do not use this exit. (formal-polite safety instruction, female voice)
นอกจากว่าคู่สัญญาจะตกลงเป็นอย่างอื่น ข้อกำหนดนี้ยังคงมีผล
nok chak wa khu sanya cha tok long pen yang uen kho kamnot ni yang khong mi phon
Unless the contracting parties agree otherwise, this provision remains in force. (formal legal style)
Because long initial exceptions can make readers hold a complex qualification before reaching the rule, final position is often clearer in conversation. Written policies use either order depending on which material deserves prominence.
Clause exception versus noun-phrase exclusion
เว้นแต่ can also precede a noun phrase meaning “except,” while นอกจาก without ว่า introduces an excluded or additional noun phrase. Do not force a clause analysis where no predicate follows.
ร้านเปิดทุกวันเว้นแต่วันจันทร์ค่ะ
ran poet thuk wan wen tae wan chan kha
The shop is open every day except Monday. (ordinary-polite schedule statement, female speaker; noun-phrase exception)
นอกจากกาแฟ ร้านนี้ยังมีชาไทยด้วยครับ
nok chak kafae ran ni yang mi cha thai duai khrap
Besides coffee, this shop also has Thai tea. (ordinary-polite additive statement, male speaker)
ร้านจะไม่ปิดก่อนเวลา นอกจากว่าจะมีเหตุฉุกเฉินค่ะ
ran cha mai pit kon wela nok chak wa cha mi het chukchoen kha
The shop will not close early unless there is an emergency. (formal-polite policy statement, female voice; clause exception)
The second example is additive because ยัง...ด้วย brings in another item. นอกจากว่า + clause instead establishes a conditional exception. English except, besides, and unless overlap lexically, but Thai signals the construction through ว่า, predicate presence, and the larger correlate.
Unless versus ถ้าไม่
ถ้าไม่ P, Q directly conditions Q on the absence of P. An unless frame first establishes a default and then names the exceptional case that can reverse it. They can be logically close without being interchangeable in every discourse.
ถ้าฝนไม่หยุด เราจะไม่ออกเดินทางค่ะ
tha fon mai yut rao cha mai ok doen thang kha
If the rain does not stop, we will not set off. (ordinary-polite negative condition, female speaker)
เราจะออกเดินทางตามกำหนด เว้นแต่ฝนจะตกหนักกว่าเดิมค่ะ
rao cha ok doen thang tam kamnot wen tae fon cha tok nak kwa doem kha
We'll leave as scheduled unless the rain gets heavier. (ordinary-polite plan with an exception, female speaker)
The first makes continued rain the condition for staying. The second foregrounds departure as the default and reserves cancellation for a more severe development. This difference in information structure often matters more than formal logic.
Negation and exception scope
With a negative main clause, the exception normally identifies the route to the opposite outcome. ไม่อนุมัติ เว้นแต่ P means approval is withheld except when P holds. Adding ไม่ inside P reverses which condition licenses the outcome.
คณะกรรมการจะไม่อนุมัติโครงการ เว้นแต่ผู้เสนอจะแก้งบประมาณค่ะ
khanakammakan cha mai anumat khrongkan wen tae phu sanoe cha kae ngoppraman kha
The committee will not approve the project unless the proposer revises the budget. (formal-polite policy statement, female voice)
คณะกรรมการจะไม่อนุมัติโครงการ เว้นแต่ผู้เสนอจะไม่ลดงบด้านความปลอดภัยค่ะ
khanakammakan cha mai anumat khrongkan wen tae phu sanoe cha mai lot ngop dan khwam plotphai kha
The committee will not approve the project unless the proposer refrains from cutting the safety budget. (formal-polite policy statement, female voice)
The second is harder because two negatives must be composed: approval is possible under the exception “the proposer does not cut.” In consequential prose, a positive reformulation such as ต้องคงงบด้านความปลอดภัยไว้จึงจะอนุมัติ may be easier to audit.
An ordinary-polite booking dialogue
เรายังเปลี่ยนวันเข้าพักได้ไหมคะ
rao yang plian wan khao phak dai mai kha
Can we still change the check-in date? (ordinary-polite question, female customer)
ได้ครับ เว้นแต่จะเหลือเวลาไม่ถึงสองวันก่อนเข้าพัก
dai khrap wen tae cha luea wela mai thueng song wan kon khao phak
Yes, unless there are fewer than two days left before check-in. (ordinary-polite reply, male staff member)
ถ้าเหลือวันเดียวก็เปลี่ยนไม่ได้แล้วใช่ไหมคะ
tha luea wan diao ko plian mai dai laeo chai mai kha
So if only one day remains, it can no longer be changed, right? (ordinary-polite confirmation, female customer)
The staff member omits the customer as the understood actor of changing the booking. The customer then restates the exception as a direct negative condition to confirm its practical effect.
Common Mistakes
1. Following นอกจากว่า with only a noun phrase
❌ ร้านเปิดทุกวันนอกจากว่าวันอาทิตย์ค่ะ
Incorrect—นอกจากว่า opens a clause, but วันอาทิตย์ alone supplies no predicate.
✅ ร้านเปิดทุกวันยกเว้นวันอาทิตย์ค่ะ
ran poet thuk wan yokwen wan athit kha
The shop is open every day except Sunday. (ordinary-polite schedule statement, female speaker)
2. Treating เว้นแต่ถ้า as the neutral default
❌ ผมจะไปเว้นแต่ถ้ารถยังเสียครับ
Overloaded for this ordinary plan—formal and legal Thai can occasionally stack เว้นแต่ถ้า, but one linker is the clearer neutral choice here.
✅ ผมจะไปเว้นแต่ว่ารถยังเสียอยู่ครับ
phom cha pai wen tae wa rot yang sia yu khrap
I'll go unless the car is still broken. (ordinary-polite plan, male speaker)
3. Putting จะ before the exception-clause subject
❌ เราจะไม่เลื่อนนัดเว้นแต่จะลูกค้าขอค่ะ
Incorrect order—an overt lower subject precedes จะ.
✅ เราจะไม่เลื่อนนัดเว้นแต่ลูกค้าจะขอค่ะ
rao cha mai luean nat wen tae luk kha cha kho kha
We won't move the appointment unless the customer asks. (ordinary-polite policy, female speaker)
4. Adding an automatic negative after เว้นแต่
❌ ฉันจะไม่ออกไปเว้นแต่ฝนจะไม่หยุดตกค่ะ
Wrong for ‘unless the rain stops’—the extra ไม่ makes continued rain the exceptional condition.
✅ ฉันจะไม่ออกไปเว้นแต่ฝนจะหยุดตกค่ะ
chan cha mai ok pai wen tae fon cha yut tok kha
I won't go out unless the rain stops. (ordinary-polite statement, female speaker)
Key Takeaways
Use เว้นแต่(ว่า) or นอกจากว่า + clause to name the condition that suspends a default claim. จะ may present that exception as contemplated but follows its subject and is not obligatory tense marking. Distinguish clause-level นอกจากว่า from นอกจาก + noun phrase, state changed actors explicitly, and choose ถ้าไม่ when a direct negative condition is more informative than an exception frame.
