เมื่อไร asks “when?” and normally occupies the time slot in the clause: ฝ่ายบัญชีจะโอนเงินวันศุกร์ “Accounting will transfer the money on Friday” becomes ฝ่ายบัญชีจะโอนเงินเมื่อไรคะ “When will Accounting transfer the money?” Thai keeps ordinary predicate order, does not invert the subject with an auxiliary, and does not inflect the verb for tense.
The expected precision matters. เมื่อไร is broad: an answer may be a date, a day, a clock time, or a relative time such as “after the meeting.” กี่โมง asks specifically for a clock time, while วันไหน asks which day or date. Boundary expressions such as ตั้งแต่เมื่อไร and ถึงเมื่อไร ask “since when?” and “until when?”
Put เมื่อไร where the time answer belongs
In a neutral information question, เมื่อไร commonly follows the predicate and its object or complement. The answer replaces it in the same position.
| Time relation | Question frame | Possible answer in the same slot |
|---|---|---|
thang borisat cha khuen ngoen muearai kha
When will the company issue the refund? (ordinary polite information question, female speaker)
รถเมล์เที่ยวสุดท้ายจะมาถึงเมื่อไรครับ
rot me thiao sutthai cha ma thueng muearai khrap
When will the last bus arrive? (ordinary polite information question, male speaker)
คุณเปิดร้านนี้มาตั้งแต่เมื่อไรคะ
khun poet ran ni ma tangtae muearai kha
Since when have you run this shop? (ordinary polite question, female speaker; มา presents the activity as continuing to now)
วันนี้ห้องสมุดเปิดถึงเมื่อไรครับ
wan ni hongsamut poet thueng muearai khrap
Until when is the library open today? (ordinary polite question, male speaker)
The English translations require will or have run, but the Thai predicates คืนเงิน, มาถึง, เปิดร้าน, and เปิด do not change form. จะ marks a prospective event where useful; มา...ตั้งแต่ presents an activity continuing from a starting boundary; วันนี้ provides the day. Thai builds temporal interpretation from these separate cues rather than tense conjugation.
เมื่อไร, กี่โมง, and วันไหน
These questions overlap in topic but not in the precision they request.
ประชุมครั้งต่อไปเมื่อไรคะ
prachum khrang to pai muearai kha
When is the next meeting? (ordinary polite broad time question, female speaker)
ประชุมพรุ่งนี้กี่โมงคะ
prachum phrung ni ki mong kha
What time is tomorrow's meeting? (ordinary polite clock-time question, female speaker)
สัปดาห์หน้าประชุมวันไหนคะ
sapda na prachum wan nai kha
Which day is the meeting next week? (ordinary polite day-selection question, female speaker)
To the first question, วันอังคารตอนบ่ายค่ะ “Tuesday afternoon” is sufficient. The second calls for a clock answer such as บ่ายสองโมงครึ่งค่ะ “2:30 p.m.” The third calls for a day such as วันอังคารค่ะ. English often uses when? for all three; Thai lets the speaker calibrate the requested answer.
The clock-time guide explains how answers such as บ่ายสองโมงครึ่ง are built across the day.
The contrast is productive beyond meetings: รถออกเมื่อไร asks broadly when it leaves, รถออกกี่โมง asks its departure time, and รถออกวันไหน asks its departure day.
Neutral position and marked fronting
Clause-final เมื่อไร is the safest neutral order: คุณจะว่างเมื่อไรครับ “When will you be free?” A time expression can be moved to the front when it is the discourse topic or part of a contrast, but that does not make fronting obligatory.
เมื่อไรถึงจะพร้อมครับ วันนี้หรือพรุ่งนี้
muearai thueng cha phrom khrap wan ni rue phrung ni
When will it finally be ready—today or tomorrow? (ordinary polite but pressing question, male speaker; contrastive time focus)
Here initial เมื่อไร and ถึงจะ make the unresolved threshold prominent. This is not the neutral template to copy for every question. For ordinary scheduling, predicate + เมื่อไร is clearer and aligns directly with the answer slot.
Standard careful writing uses เมื่อไร. The spelling เมื่อไหร่ is widespread in conversation, dialogue, and informal writing (informal) and represents the same everyday question. This guide uses เมื่อไร as its neutral reference spelling. RTGS writes the pronunciation as muearai and, by design, does not display tone or vowel length.
Politeness and clause type
Because เมื่อไร already requests time content, a direct question normally ends เมื่อไรครับ for a male speaker or เมื่อไรคะ for a female speaker. Do not add ไหม after it: that would attempt to turn an open time question into a yes–no question without providing a time alternative.
If you want confirmation, propose the time and use ใช่ไหม:
นัดวันศุกร์บ่ายสามใช่ไหมครับ
nat wan suk bai sam chai mai khrap
The appointment is Friday at three, right? (ordinary polite confirmation question, male speaker)
This is different from นัดเมื่อไรครับ, which asks the listener to supply the time. Natural answers to a เมื่อไร question contain time information, not bare ใช่ or ไม่ใช่.
For a repair request, speakers often add นะครับ/นะคะ and refer to the earlier message:
ขอโทษนะคะ นัดตรวจอีกครั้งเมื่อไรนะคะ
kho thot na kha nat truat ik khrang muearai na kha
Sorry, when is the next checkup again? (polite repair request, female speaker)
The final นะคะ signals “remind me / please restore this information.” It does not change เมื่อไร into a different grammatical category.
Answer shape and omission
The answer can be only a time phrase when the event is already active. Thai does not require a dummy subject or repeated copula.
เอกสารจะพร้อมเมื่อไรครับ
ekkasan cha phrom muearai khrap
When will the documents be ready? (ordinary polite information question, male speaker)
หลังผู้จัดการเซ็นค่ะ น่าจะก่อนเที่ยง
lang phu chatkan sen kha na cha kon thiang
After the manager signs them—probably before noon. (ordinary polite answer, female speaker; subject and predicate omitted)
The answer supplies a relative boundary rather than a calendar time, and it is still fully responsive. น่าจะ calibrates the estimate. English speakers sometimes search for one tense-perfect sentence; Thai conversation instead preserves what is already given and states only the new time information.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
A female patient schedules a follow-up with a male clinic employee.
คุณหมอนัดตรวจอีกครั้งเมื่อไรคะ
khun mo nat truat ik khrang muearai kha
When did the doctor schedule the next checkup? (ordinary polite question, female patient)
วันพุธหน้าครับ ตอนสิบโมงเช้า
wan phut na khrap ton sip mong chao
Next Wednesday, at ten in the morning. (ordinary polite answer, male employee)
ต้องมาถึงก่อนกี่โมงคะ
tong ma thueng kon ki mong kha
By what time do I need to arrive? (ordinary polite follow-up, female patient; asks for clock time)
มาถึงก่อนเก้าโมงครึ่งก็ได้ครับ
ma thueng kon kao mong khrueng ko dai khrap
Arriving before 9:30 is fine. (ordinary polite answer, male employee)
The first question asks broadly when the appointment is; the answer gives both day and time. Once the day is established, the follow-up narrows the missing information to a clock boundary with กี่โมง.
Common Mistakes
1. Adding English do-support
❌ คุณทำจะส่งรายงานเมื่อไรครับ
Incorrect—lexical ทำ is not the English question auxiliary ‘do.’
✅ คุณจะส่งรายงานเมื่อไรครับ
khun cha song raingan muearai khrap
When will you send the report? (ordinary polite question, male speaker)
2. Moving เมื่อไร mechanically and inverting the clause
❌ เมื่อไรจะคุณมาถึงคะ
Incorrect English-style auxiliary–subject order—จะ remains before the predicate after the subject.
✅ คุณจะมาถึงเมื่อไรคะ
khun cha ma thueng muearai kha
When will you arrive? (ordinary polite information question, female speaker)
3. Adding ไหม to an open time question
❌ ร้านปิดเมื่อไรไหมครับ
Incorrect for ‘When does the shop close?’—ไหม requests a yes–no decision, not a time.
✅ ร้านปิดเมื่อไรครับ
ran pit muearai khrap
When does the shop close? (ordinary polite question, male speaker)
4. Answering “when?” with bare ใช่
❌ รถจะออกเมื่อไรคะ — ใช่ครับ
Incorrect answer shape—ใช่ supplies confirmation but no departure time.
✅ รถจะออกเมื่อไรคะ — หกโมงเย็นครับ
rot cha ok muearai kha hok mong yen khrap
When will the bus leave? — At six p.m. (ordinary polite exchange)
5. Using female statement ค่ะ in a direct question
❌ จะส่งของเมื่อไรค่ะ
Incorrect polite-particle form—a female speaker uses question คะ.
✅ จะส่งของเมื่อไรคะ
cha song khong muearai kha
When will you send the goods? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
Key Takeaways
- Put เมื่อไร in the ordinary time slot; neutral position is commonly after the predicate and its complements.
- Choose กี่โมง for clock time, วันไหน for a day, and ตั้งแต่/ถึงเมื่อไร for temporal boundaries.
- Thai verbs do not conjugate for tense; time, aspect, modality, and context locate the event.
- An open time question ends in ครับ/คะ without automatic ไหม; confirmation instead proposes a time and uses ใช่ไหม.
- Use เมื่อไร in neutral reference writing; เมื่อไหร่ is widespread in informal conversation and dialogue.
