ไหน, ที่ไหน, and Location Questions

Thai uses ไหน in several related but distinct question frames. After a noun or classifier, it asks which one: ร้านไหน “which shop?”, ห้องไหน “which room?”, อันไหน “which one?” With ที่, the expression ที่ไหน asks “where?” as a location: คุณพักที่ไหนคะ “Where are you staying?” Motion and source verbs often license their own compact frames, such as ไปไหน “go where?” and มาจากไหน “come from where?”

All of these follow the answer-slot principle. Thai does not automatically move ไหน to the front. Replace the known place in an ordinary statement with the appropriate ไหน expression, preserve the predicate, and put the polite particle after the complete question.

ไหน asks which member of a known category

When the unknown is a choice among people, things, places, or routes named by a noun, put ไหน after that noun. The noun establishes the category; ไหน asks the listener to identify a member of it.

คุณจองโรงแรมไหนคะ

khun chong rongraem nai kha

Which hotel did you book? (ordinary polite information question, female speaker)

เราต้องขึ้นรถไฟขบวนไหนครับ

rao tong khuen rotfai khabuan nai khrap

Which train do we need to take? (ordinary polite information question, male speaker)

If the noun is already active in the conversation, a classifier plus ไหน can stand alone: เล่มไหน “which volume?”, ใบไหน “which flat/container-class item?”, คันไหน “which vehicle?” General อันไหน is common for an understood thing when no more specific classifier is needed in the current frame.

This noun omission preserves the classifier rather than abandoning the noun phrase; see classifier ellipsis for the wider pattern.

บนโต๊ะมีแฟ้มสามเล่ม ต้องใช้เล่มไหนคะ

bon to mi faem sam lem tong chai lem nai kha

There are three folders on the table. Which one do we need? (ordinary polite question, female speaker; เล่ม preserves the item class)

เอาอันไหนครับ อันเล็กหรืออันใหญ่

ao an nai khrap an lek rue an yai

Which one would you like—the small one or the large one? (ordinary polite service question, male speaker)

English puts which before the noun; Thai uses noun + ไหน or classifier + ไหน. No article and no plural ending is added.

💡
Use noun + ไหน to ask “which noun?” and classifier + ไหน when the noun is recoverable. The category comes first because ไหน occupies the selection slot after it.

ที่ไหน asks for a location

ที่ไหน is a locative question expression. It can occur after predicates that locate an entity or event, including อยู่ “be located/stay” and พัก “stay.” The location answer goes in exactly the same position.

Meaning soughtQuestion frameAnswer replacing the ไหน expression

samnakngan fai banchi yu thi nai khrap

Where is the Accounting office? (ordinary polite information question, male speaker)

อยู่ชั้นห้าติดกับห้องประชุมค่ะ

yu chan ha tit kap hong prachum kha

It's on the fifth floor next to the meeting room. (ordinary polite answer, female speaker; subject omitted)

The answer does not have to repeat ที่. อยู่ที่โรงแรม and อยู่โรงแรม can both occur, while a floor expression such as อยู่ชั้นห้า is naturally bare. Thai relator choice depends on the kind of location expression; it is not a word-for-word copy of English at, in, or on.

อยู่ไหน and อยู่ที่ไหน

Both อยู่ไหน and อยู่ที่ไหน are natural in standard Central Thai. The version without ที่ is especially common in everyday conversation when a simple location is requested. อยู่ที่ไหน makes the locative expression more explicit and is neutral across speech and writing.

ตอนนี้อยู่ไหนคะ

ton ni yu nai kha

Where are you now? (ordinary polite conversational question, female speaker; addressee omitted)

เอกสารต้นฉบับอยู่ที่ไหนครับ

ekkasan tonchabap yu thi nai khrap

Where is the original document? (ordinary polite workplace question, male speaker)

Do not infer that bare ไหน always means “where.” After อยู่, location is already licensed, so ไหน can receive that reading. After a noun, as in เอกสารไหน, it asks “which document.” The host construction determines the interpretation.

Motion and source frames

With ไป, a bare destination commonly follows: ไปตลาด, ไปธนาคาร, and therefore ไปไหน. ไปที่ไหน is also grammatical and can make “to what place?” more explicit, but it is not required in an ordinary destination question. With จาก, use จากไหน for a source. With a placement predicate, ตรงไหน asks for the exact spot.

หลังประชุมจะไปไหนต่อคะ

lang prachum cha pai nai to kha

Where are you going next after the meeting? (ordinary polite information question, female speaker)

พัสดุชิ้นนี้ส่งมาจากไหนครับ

phatsadu chin ni song ma chak nai khrap

Where was this parcel sent from? (ordinary polite information question, male speaker)

กล่องพวกนี้จะให้วางไว้ตรงไหนคะ

klong phuak ni cha hai wang wai trong nai kha

Where would you like these boxes placed? (ordinary polite workplace question, female speaker)

The verbs do not inflect for tense. จะ marks a prospective destination in the first and third examples; in the parcel question, the result and context support a past sending event without an English past-tense ending.

Which place and where are not the same question

The minimal contrast below matters:

คุณพักที่ไหนคะ

khun phak thi nai kha

Where are you staying? (asks for a location)

คุณพักโรงแรมไหนคะ

khun phak rongraem nai kha

Which hotel are you staying at? (asks which member of the hotel category)

The first answer could be พักแถวสถานีรถไฟค่ะ “Near the railway station,” which need not name a hotel. The second answer should identify a hotel. English can use where even when a hotel name is expected; Thai makes the choice between a locative variable (ที่ไหน) and a noun-category variable (โรงแรมไหน) visible.

Politeness, confirmation, and repair

A content question ends in ครับ for a male speaker or question คะ for a female speaker: อยู่ที่ไหนครับ/คะ. Do not add ไหม to mean “more polite.” If a location has already been proposed, state it and use ใช่ไหม for confirmation: ห้องประชุมอยู่ชั้นห้าใช่ไหมคะ “The meeting room is on the fifth floor, right?”

For repair, ที่ไหนนะครับ/นะคะ can ask the listener to restore a location that was just mentioned.

ขอโทษนะครับ เมื่อกี้บอกว่าให้ไปรอที่ไหนนะครับ

kho thot na khrap muea ki bok wa hai pai ro thi nai na khrap

Sorry, where did you say I should wait? (polite repair request, male speaker)

Ordinary-polite dialogue

A female visitor asks a male security employee for an office location.

ขอโทษค่ะ ฝ่ายทะเบียนอยู่ที่ไหนคะ

kho thot kha fai thabian yu thi nai kha

Excuse me, where is the Registration Department? (ordinary polite question, female visitor)

อยู่ตึกหลังครับ ขึ้นลิฟต์ไปชั้นสาม

yu tuek lang khrap khuen lip pai chan sam

It's in the building at the back. Take the elevator to the third floor. (ordinary polite answer, male employee)

ต้องเข้าประตูไหนคะ

tong khao pratu nai kha

Which entrance should I use? (ordinary polite follow-up, female visitor)

ประตูข้างร้านกาแฟครับ

pratu khang ran kafae khrap

The entrance beside the café. (ordinary polite answer, male employee; predicate omitted)

The first question requests a location with ที่ไหน. The follow-up selects one entrance with noun + ไหน. The short final answer fills the requested noun-category slot without repeating a full clause.

💡
Ask whether you need a coordinate or a choice. Use ที่ไหน/อยู่ไหน for “where,” but noun + ไหน for “which noun.”

Common Mistakes

1. Fronting the location expression like English

❌ ที่ไหนสำนักงานอยู่ครับ

Incorrect neutral order—ที่ไหน replaces the ordinary location after อยู่.

✅ สำนักงานอยู่ที่ไหนครับ

samnakngan yu thi nai khrap

Where is the office? (ordinary polite question, male speaker)

2. Putting ไหน before the noun for “which”

❌ คุณพักไหนโรงแรมคะ

Incorrect English-like order—Thai places ไหน after the category noun.

✅ คุณพักโรงแรมไหนคะ

khun phak rongraem nai kha

Which hotel are you staying at? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)

3. Adding ไหม to a where-question

❌ ห้องน้ำอยู่ไหนไหมครับ

Incorrect for ‘Where is the restroom?’—ไหม asks for a yes–no decision and does not supply a location answer.

✅ ห้องน้ำอยู่ไหนครับ

hong nam yu nai khrap

Where is the restroom? (ordinary polite question, male speaker)

4. Using เป็น as an English-style copula for location

❌ สถานีรถไฟเป็นที่ไหนคะ

Incorrect for physical location—Thai uses อยู่, not identity copula เป็น, in this question.

✅ สถานีรถไฟอยู่ที่ไหนคะ

sathani rotfai yu thi nai kha

Where is the railway station? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)

5. Using female statement ค่ะ after a direct question

❌ จะวางของไว้ตรงไหนค่ะ

Incorrect polite-particle form—a female speaker uses question คะ.

✅ จะวางของไว้ตรงไหนคะ

cha wang khong wai trong nai kha

Where should the things be put? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • Use noun/classifier + ไหน for “which one,” but ที่ไหน or conversational อยู่ไหน for a location.
  • Use verb-appropriate frames: ไปไหน for destination, จากไหน for source, and ตรงไหน for an exact spot.
  • Keep the question expression in the answer position and leave the rest of the clause in normal order.
  • Put ครับ/คะ after the complete content question; use a proposed location plus ใช่ไหม when you want confirmation.
