Thai transport conversations rely on compact, reusable frames: ไป…ยังไง “how do I get to…?”, นั่ง…ไป “take…there,” ลงที่… “get off at…,” and รถออกกี่โมง “what time does the vehicle leave?” Subjects are often omitted because traveler and staff roles are obvious.
These are not word-for-word versions of English formulas. Common destinations can follow ไป directly, vehicles often appear after นั่ง or ขึ้น, and classifiers enter only when tickets, vehicles, or journeys are counted.
Asking how to reach a destination
The most useful question is ไป + destination + ยังไง. In neutral reference spelling, อย่างไร is more formal; spoken ยังไง (informal/ordinary) is the everyday choice.
| Fixed frame | Substitutable slot | Use |
|---|---|---|
| ไป _ ยังไง | station, airport, hotel, district | ask how to get there |
| นั่ง _ ไป | bus, train, taxi, boat | name the transport used |
| ขึ้น ที่ | vehicle/line + boarding place | say where to board |
| ลงที่ _ | stop/station/landmark | say where to get off |
| ต่อ ที่ | next vehicle/line + interchange | describe a connection |
| จาก ถึง ใช้เวลาเท่าไร | origin + destination | ask journey duration |
จากตรงนี้ไปสถานีรถไฟยังไงคะ
chak trong ni pai sathani rotfai yang ngai kha
How do I get from here to the railway station? (ordinary-polite question, female speaker)
นั่งรถเมล์สายสิบสองไปได้ครับ
nang rot me sai sip song pai dai khrap
You can take bus number 12 there. (ordinary-polite reply, male speaker)
ขึ้นรถตรงป้ายหน้าโรงพยาบาล แล้วลงที่ตลาดค่ะ
khuen rot trong pai na rongphayaban laeo long thi talat kha
Board at the stop in front of the hospital, then get off at the market. (ordinary-polite directions, female speaker)
Thai does not require a word corresponding to English to before ordinary destinations: ไปสถานี, ไปสนามบิน, ไปเชียงใหม่. ที่ appears naturally with the location of boarding or alighting—ขึ้นที่สถานีนี้, ลงที่ป้ายหน้า—rather than as an obligatory marker after ไป.
ไป, ถึง, ขึ้น, and ลง
ไป profiles travel toward or away from an adopted center; ถึง profiles reaching the endpoint. ขึ้น means board or go up, while ลง means get off or go down. One English verb cannot replace all four.
รถตู้ไปอยุธยาคันนี้ออกบ่ายโมงครับ
rot tu pai ayutthaya khan ni ok bai mong khrap
This van to Ayutthaya leaves at one p.m. (ordinary-polite information, male speaker; คันนี้ tracks the vehicle)
รถไฟจะถึงเชียงใหม่ประมาณเจ็ดโมงเช้าค่ะ
rotfai cha thueng chiang mai praman chet mong chao kha
The train will reach Chiang Mai at about seven in the morning. (ordinary-polite schedule information, female speaker)
ต้องเปลี่ยนสายที่สถานีสยามไหมครับ
tong plian sai thi sathani sayam mai khrap
Do I need to change lines at Siam station? (ordinary-polite question, male speaker)
Compare รถไปเชียงใหม่ “the vehicle goes to Chiang Mai” with รถถึงเชียงใหม่ “the vehicle reaches Chiang Mai.” The first describes route or destination; the second focuses on arrival. จะ can present a scheduled event prospectively, but timetables and clock expressions can locate an unchanged verb without it.
The ไป and มา guide explains how conversational viewpoint chooses direction. In transport formulas, the route and endpoint often matter more than an English go/come label.
Naming a vehicle and route
Everyday Thai commonly packages “by bus/train” as a motion sequence: นั่งรถเมล์ไป, นั่งรถไฟไป, ขึ้นรถไฟฟ้า. More formal travel information may use โดย + vehicle (formal/neutral writing), but นั่ง…ไป is usually more conversational.
ผมนั่งรถไฟฟ้าไปทำงานทุกวันครับ
phom nang rotfaifa pai tham ngan thuk wan khrap
I take the electric train to work every day. (ordinary-polite routine, male speaker)
เดินทางโดยรถไฟใช้เวลาประมาณสี่ชั่วโมงค่ะ
doen thang doi rotfai chai wela praman si chua mong kha
Traveling by train takes about four hours. (neutral/formal-polite information, female speaker)
สายนี้ไปถึงสนามบินโดยไม่ต้องต่อรถครับ
sai ni pai thueng sanambin doi mai tong to rot khrap
This line reaches the airport without requiring a connection. (neutral-polite route information, male speaker)
In นั่งรถไฟฟ้าไปทำงาน, the adjacent verbs describe posture/transport, direction, and purpose. ไปทำงาน is not an infinitive: the event order is ride, travel onward, work. The go-for-a-purpose guide treats this productive ordering.
Tickets, trips, and classifiers
Transport nouns do not share one classifier. Vehicles such as cars, vans, buses, bicycles, and motorcycles conventionally use คัน when individually counted. Tickets commonly use ใบ; journeys or scheduled services can use เที่ยว.
| Item | Counting frame | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ticket | ตั๋ว + number + ใบ | ตั๋วสองใบ |
| vehicle | รถ + number + คัน | รถตู้สามคัน |
| scheduled trip/service | รถ/เที่ยวบิน + number + เที่ยว | รถวันละห้าเที่ยว |
| line/route identifier | รถเมล์สาย + number | รถเมล์สายแปด |
ขอตั๋วไปหัวหินสองใบครับ
kho tua pai hua hin song bai khrap
Two tickets to Hua Hin, please. (ordinary-polite purchase, male speaker)
วันนี้มีรถไปตัวเมืองแค่สามเที่ยวค่ะ
wan ni mi rot pai tua mueang khae sam thiao kha
Today there are only three services to the city center. (ordinary-polite schedule information, female speaker)
The noun precedes number and classifier. สองตั๋ว copies English order, while ตั๋วสองใบ is the normal Thai count. Do not add a classifier when simply naming a route: รถเมล์สายสิบสอง, not a count of twelve buses. See คัน for vehicles.
Useful driver and station formulas
In a taxi, the destination can stand alone after a polite attention-getter because “please take me to” is understood. A fuller request uses ไป + destination + ครับ/ค่ะ. จอดตรงนี้ asks the driver to stop here; ช่วยเปิดมิเตอร์ด้วย requests the meter.
ไปซอยสุขุมวิทสามสิบเอ็ดครับ
pai soi sukhumwit sam sip et khrap
Soi Sukhumvit 31, please. (ordinary-polite taxi destination, male passenger)
ช่วยจอดหน้าร้านสะดวกซื้อตรงนั้นค่ะ
chuai chot na ran saduak sue trong nan kha
Please stop in front of that convenience store. (ordinary-polite request, female passenger)
At a station, เที่ยวสุดท้าย means the last scheduled service, and ชานชาลา means platform. These lexical choices are conventional; they do not follow from English articles.
รถเที่ยวสุดท้ายออกจากชานชาลาไหนคะ
rot thiao sutthai ok chak chanchala nai kha
Which platform does the last service leave from? (ordinary-polite question, female speaker)
Subject omission and politeness
In ขอตั๋วสองใบครับ, the male speaker and clerk are obvious, so neither pronoun appears. In ต้องเปลี่ยนสายไหมคะ, the traveler is understood. Add ผม/ฉัน only when contrast or clarity requires it.
Casual speech among friends may omit ครับ/ค่ะ and shorten questions: ลงไหน, ไปทางไหน. With drivers, ticket staff, or strangers, full frames plus the appropriate polite particle are safer and more natural. A female information question ends in คะ; a female statement ends in ค่ะ.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
A female traveler asks a male station employee about a connection.
ถ้าจะไปพิพิธภัณฑ์ ต้องขึ้นรถสายไหนคะ
tha cha pai phiphitthaphan tong khuen rot sai nai kha
Which line should I take to go to the museum? (ordinary-polite question, female traveler)
ขึ้นสายสี่ครับ แล้วไปต่อรถไฟฟ้าที่สถานีกลาง
khuen sai si khrap laeo pai to rotfaifa thi sathani klang
Take line 4, then transfer to the electric train at Central Station. (ordinary-polite directions, male employee)
ใช้เวลาประมาณกี่นาทีคะ
chai wela praman ki nathi kha
About how many minutes does it take? (ordinary-polite question, female traveler)
ประมาณสี่สิบนาทีครับ ถ้ารถไม่ติด
praman si sip nathi khrap tha rot mai tit
About forty minutes, if traffic isn't heavy. (ordinary-polite reply, male employee)
Common Mistakes
1. Adding ที่ as obligatory English “to”
❌ พรุ่งนี้ผมจะไปที่เชียงใหม่ครับ
Marked in the intended ordinary destination formula—city destinations normally follow ไป directly.
✅ พรุ่งนี้ผมจะนั่งรถไฟไปเชียงใหม่ครับ
phrung ni phom cha nang rotfai pai chiang mai khrap
Tomorrow I'll take the train to Chiang Mai. (ordinary-polite plan, male speaker)
2. Reversing noun–number–classifier order
❌ ขอสองใบตั๋วไปหัวหินค่ะ
Incorrect English-like counting order.
✅ ขอตั๋วไปหัวหินสองใบค่ะ
kho tua pai hua hin song bai kha
Two tickets to Hua Hin, please. (ordinary-polite purchase, female speaker)
3. Leaving departure versus arrival unclear
❌ รถไฟไปเชียงใหม่กี่โมงคะ
Ambiguous for the intended arrival-time question—ไป names the route but does not explicitly select reaching the destination.
✅ รถไฟขบวนนี้ถึงเชียงใหม่กี่โมงคะ
rotfai khabuan ni thueng chiang mai ki mong kha
What time does this train arrive in Chiang Mai? (ordinary-polite arrival-time question, female speaker)
4. Treating ไปซื้อ as an infinitive phrase
❌ ฉันนั่งรถไปที่จะซื้อยาค่ะ
Incorrect—ที่จะ is not an infinitive marker in this motion-purpose sequence.
✅ ฉันนั่งรถไปซื้อยาที่ร้านขายยาค่ะ
chan nang rot pai sue ya thi ran khai ya kha
I'm taking a vehicle to buy medicine at the pharmacy. (ordinary-polite statement, female speaker)
Key Takeaways
Ask ไป…ยังไง, name ordinary transport with นั่ง…ไป, board with ขึ้น, alight with ลง, and focus on arrival with ถึง. Use ที่ for stops and boarding points rather than before every destination. Keep ticket and vehicle counts in noun–number–classifier order, and omit pronouns only when traveler and staff roles remain obvious.
