Asking for and Giving Directions

Thai distinguishes asking for a place from asking for a route. ธนาคารอยู่ตรงไหนครับ asks where the bank is; ไปธนาคารทางไหนครับ asks which way to go. Answers then combine unchanged motion predicates—เดิน, ไป, ข้าม, เลี้ยว—with landmarks and sequence words.

The traveler and destination are often omitted after they become obvious. A natural direction can therefore be as short as ตรงไปแล้วเลี้ยวซ้ายค่ะ “Go straight, then turn left.” This is discourse economy, not a missing English subject or imperative form.

Two basic questions

NeedProductive frameExpected answer
static locationplace + อยู่ + ที่ไหน/ตรงไหนa location relative to a landmark
routeไป + place + ทางไหนa path or direction
method of travelไป + place + อย่างไรroute, vehicle, or procedure
distanceplace + อยู่ไกลไหมdistance or travel time
source to goalจาก A ไป B + ทางไหนa route connecting both places
confirm landmarkplace + อยู่ข้าง/ตรงข้าม + landmark + ใช่ไหมconfirmation or correction

ขอโทษนะครับ สถานีรถไฟฟ้าอยู่ตรงไหนครับ

kho thot na khrap sathani rot fa yu trong nai khrap

Excuse me, where is the skytrain station? (ordinary polite location question, male visitor)

จากตลาดไปโรงพยาบาลทางไหนคะ

chak talat pai rongphayaban thang nai kha

Which way do I go from the market to the hospital? (ordinary polite route question, female visitor)

พิพิธภัณฑ์อยู่ไกลจากที่นี่ไหมครับ

phiphitthaphan yu klai chak thi ni mai khrap

Is the museum far from here? (ordinary polite distance question, male visitor)

There is no English do in these questions and no inversion. ที่ไหน or ตรงไหน occupies the place-information slot; ทางไหน asks for the path. The polite particle closes the full question.

💡
Use อยู่ตรงไหน when you need the destination's location and ไป...ทางไหน when you need the sequence that gets you there.

Minimal contrast: location and route

ร้านขายยาอยู่ตรงไหนคะ

ran khai ya yu trong nai kha

Where is the pharmacy? (ordinary polite location question, female speaker)

ไปร้านขายยาทางไหนคะ

pai ran khai ya thang nai kha

Which way do I go to the pharmacy? (ordinary polite route question, female speaker)

The first invites an answer such as อยู่ข้างธนาคาร “It is beside the bank.” The second invites a motion sequence such as เดินตรงไปแล้วข้ามถนน “Walk straight and then cross the road.” English often uses “Where is...?” for both practical needs, but Thai can make the information type explicit.

อย่างไร is neutral to formal “how.” Conversational spelling and speech often use ยังไง (informal-to-ordinary spoken). It can ask about transport as well as route, so ไปสนามบินอย่างไร may be answered with “by train” rather than turn-by-turn directions.

ถ้าไม่ขับรถ จะไปสนามบินอย่างไรครับ

tha mai khap rot cha pai sanambin yangrai khrap

If I don't drive, how can I get to the airport? (ordinary polite transport question, male speaker)

Build a route in event order

Thai normally presents directions in the order the traveler performs them. เดินตรงไป → เลี้ยวขวา → ข้ามสะพาน → ถึงตลาด mirrors the path.

Route stepThai frameFunction
continue aheadเดินตรงไปstraight motion away along the route
turnเลี้ยวซ้าย / เลี้ยวขวาchange direction
crossข้ามถนน / ข้ามสะพานtraverse a landmark
passผ่านร้าน / ผ่านแยกuse a landmark along the path
enter or exitเข้าไปใน / ออกจากcross a boundary
arriveไปถึง / จะเจอreach or encounter the goal

เดินตรงไปประมาณสองร้อยเมตร แล้วเลี้ยวขวาที่แยกแรกครับ

doen trong pai praman song roi met laeo liao khwa thi yaek raek khrap

Walk straight for about 200 meters, then turn right at the first intersection. (ordinary polite route instruction, male speaker)

ข้ามสะพานแล้วจะเห็นตลาดอยู่ทางซ้ายมือค่ะ

kham saphan laeo cha hen talat yu thang sai mue kha

After crossing the bridge, you'll see the market on your left. (ordinary polite route instruction, female speaker)

ผ่านปั๊มน้ำมันไปก่อน แล้วเลี้ยวเข้าซอยที่สองครับ

phan pam namman pai kon laeo liao khao soi thi song khrap

Go past the petrol station first, then turn into the second lane. (ordinary polite route instruction, male speaker)

ประมาณสองร้อยเมตร measures distance without a classifier after เมตร, which is already a unit. ซอยที่สอง uses ordinal ที่สอง, not the cardinal count frame “two lanes.” Route grammar and measurement grammar keep their own structures.

Landmarks and static location

An identifiable destination commonly follows อยู่. Relational bases precede their landmark: ข้างธนาคาร, หน้าสถานี, หลังตลาด. English “beside the bank” and “in front of the station” do not require a Thai equivalent of of.

ที่ทำการไปรษณีย์อยู่ตรงข้ามโรงเรียนค่ะ

thi thamkan praisani yu trong kham rongrian kha

The post office is opposite the school. (ordinary polite location statement, female speaker)

ทางเข้าหลักอยู่ข้างร้านกาแฟครับ

thang khao lak yu khang ran kafae khrap

The main entrance is beside the coffee shop. (ordinary polite location statement, male speaker)

ห้องน้ำอยู่ชั้นล่าง ด้านหลังลิฟต์ค่ะ

hong nam yu chan lang dan lang lif kha

The restroom is downstairs, behind the lift. (ordinary polite location statement, female speaker)

The figure comes first because it is what the listener wants located. A place-first answer is also possible when the landmark becomes the topic: หลังลิฟต์มีห้องน้ำค่ะ introduces a restroom behind the lift. That existential frame uses มี, not อยู่.

See หน้า, หลัง, and ข้าง for the full contrast among relational bases and deictic expressions.

ไป and มา depend on viewpoint

ไป presents motion away from an adopted center; มา presents motion toward it. A receptionist inside an office may tell a caller มาที่ชั้นสาม “come to the third floor,” while the visitor describes the same journey as ขึ้นไปชั้นสาม “go up to the third floor.”

ขึ้นมาชั้นสี่แล้วโทรหาผมนะครับ

khuen ma chan si laeo tho ha phom na khrap

Come up to the fourth floor and then call me. (listener-oriented polite instruction, male speaker located at the goal)

ตอนนี้อยู่ชั้นหนึ่งค่ะ เดี๋ยวขึ้นไป

ton ni yu chan nueng kha diao khuen pai

I'm on the first floor now; I'll go up in a moment. (ordinary polite reply, female visitor viewing motion from her current position)

The different directionals do not contradict each other. Each speaker chooses a center. The ไป and มา page develops this viewpoint system.

Omission and clarification

After the destination is established, directions omit it naturally. The listener remains the understood mover in an imperative, so repeated คุณ is unnecessary.

ออกจากลิฟต์แล้วเลี้ยวซ้าย เดินไปจนสุดทางค่ะ

ok chak lif laeo liao sai doen pai chon sut thang kha

Exit the lift, turn left, and walk to the end of the corridor. (ordinary polite route instruction, female speaker; addressee omitted)

If the path is unclear, ask for a landmark, side, or distance rather than simply repeating the whole question.

เลี้ยวก่อนหรือหลังธนาคารครับ

liao kon rue lang thanakhan khrap

Do I turn before or after the bank? (ordinary polite clarification, male visitor)

เลยธนาคารไปแล้วค่อยเลี้ยวค่ะ จะมีป้ายสีน้ำเงินอยู่หน้าซอย

loei thanakhan pai laeo khoi liao kha cha mi pai si namngoen yu na soi

Go past the bank and then turn. There will be a blue sign at the lane entrance. (ordinary polite clarification, female local)

The response supplies only the contrasted path segment. ป้ายสีน้ำเงิน is then introduced with มี and located with อยู่หน้าซอย.

💡
Give directions in travel order and repeat only what prevents a wrong turn: a changed landmark, side, level, or distance.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

A visitor looks for a clinic inside a shopping center.

ขอโทษนะคะ คลินิกอยู่ชั้นไหนคะ

kho thot na kha khlinik yu chan nai kha

Excuse me, which floor is the clinic on? (ordinary polite question, female visitor)

อยู่ชั้นห้าครับ ขึ้นลิฟต์ไปชั้นห้าได้เลย

yu chan ha khrap khuen lif pai chan ha dai loei

It's on the fifth floor. You can take the lift straight to the fifth floor. (ordinary polite reply, male employee)

พอขึ้นไปแล้วต้องเลี้ยวทางไหนคะ

pho khuen pai laeo tong liao thang nai kha

Once I'm up there, which way should I turn? (ordinary polite follow-up, female visitor)

เลี้ยวขวาครับ คลินิกอยู่ถัดจากร้านแว่นตา

liao khwa khrap khlinik yu that chak ran waen ta

Turn right. The clinic is next to the optical shop. (ordinary polite reply, male employee)

The destination disappears from the second and third turns when recoverable, then returns when the employee states its final location.

Common Mistakes

1. Using เป็น for physical location

❌ สถานีรถไฟเป็นตรงไหนครับ

Incorrect—physical location of an identifiable place uses อยู่.

✅ สถานีรถไฟอยู่ตรงไหนครับ

sathani rot fai yu trong nai khrap

Where is the railway station? (ordinary polite question, male speaker)

2. Asking for a location when you need a route

❌ โรงพยาบาลอยู่ตรงไหนครับ

Wrong for the intended turn-by-turn directions—this asks for the hospital's static location relative to a landmark.

✅ จากตรงนี้ไปโรงพยาบาลทางไหนครับ

chak trong ni pai rongphayaban thang nai khrap

Which way do I go from here to the hospital? (ordinary polite route question, male speaker)

3. Reversing relational-base order

❌ ร้านขายยาอยู่ธนาคารข้างครับ

Incorrect order—ข้าง precedes its landmark.

✅ ร้านขายยาอยู่ข้างธนาคารครับ

ran khai ya yu khang thanakhan khrap

The pharmacy is beside the bank. (ordinary polite location statement, male speaker)

4. Copying English adjective order into a turn

❌ เลี้ยวที่ขวาตรงแยกค่ะ

Incorrect neutral direction—Thai uses verb + side: เลี้ยวขวา.

✅ เลี้ยวขวาตรงแยกค่ะ

liao khwa trong yaek kha

Turn right at the intersection. (ordinary polite direction, female speaker)

5. Adding English do-support to a route question

❌ ทำผมไปห้องสมุดทางไหนครับ

Incorrect—ทำ is not an auxiliary corresponding to English ‘do.’

✅ จากตรงนี้ไปห้องสมุดทางไหนครับ

chak trong ni pai hong samut thang nai khrap

Which way do I go from here to the library? (ordinary polite route question, male speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • Ask place + อยู่ตรงไหน for location and ไป + place + ทางไหน for a route.
  • Give steps in travel order with ตรงไป, เลี้ยว, ข้าม, ผ่าน, เข้า, ออก, and ถึง.
  • Locate the goal with อยู่ + relation + landmark; relational bases precede landmarks and need no equivalent of English of.
  • Let the active traveler and destination disappear, but repeat a landmark, side, level, or distance when it prevents ambiguity.
