English go and come can tempt learners into a simple translation swap: ไป = “go,” มา = “come.” Thai instead asks where the conversation's deictic center—its adopted “here”—is. ไป presents motion away from that center; มา presents motion toward it. The center is often the speaker's current location, but it may be the listener's location, a shared destination, or the viewpoint inside a story.
That choice remains active when ไป or มา combines with a manner verb, a purpose verb, a carried object, negation, or an aspect marker. The words are therefore not interchangeable synonyms, and physical speaker location alone does not decide every case.
Compact comparison
| Question | Choose ไป | Choose มา |
|---|---|---|
| Direction from the adopted center | away or onward | toward the center |
| Main motion | ไปห้องสมุด | มาที่ห้องนี้ |
| Manner + direction | เดินไป | เดินมา |
| Motion + purpose | ไปส่งของ | มารับของ |
| Carried object | เอาของไป | เอาของมา |
| Common aspect reading | ไปแล้ว “has left/gone” | มาแล้ว “has arrived/come” |
Decision tree
- Is there literal motion or a directional extension? If not, this page's physical-motion test may not apply; learn lexicalized uses such as ต่อไป separately.
- What place or participant is “here” for this utterance? Start with the speaker's location, but check whether the speaker has adopted the listener's location or a shared event as center.
- Does the path lead away from that center? Choose ไป. Does it lead toward it? Choose มา.
- Where is the directional verb in the predicate? Before another action it often introduces motion plus purpose (ไปซื้อ, มาประชุม); after a manner verb or carried object it gives direction (เดินมา, เอาเอกสารไป).
- What does aspect or negation cover? ยังไม่มา says an expected arrival has not occurred; ยังไม่ไป says departure has not occurred. มาแล้ว and ไปแล้ว preserve the same direction while marking a current change or completed boundary.
- What is the relationship and register? Hosts commonly adopt the event as center and invite someone with มา. Polite particles mark the interaction; they do not change the directional contrast.
Hold the vocabulary constant
The clearest minimal pairs change only the directional word. Suppose the speaker is already in meeting room B:
คุณจะไปห้องประชุมบีไหมคะ
khun cha pai hong prachum bi mai kha
Are you going to meeting room B? (possible only if room B is treated as away from the adopted center)
คุณจะมาห้องประชุมบีไหมคะ
khun cha ma hong prachum bi mai kha
Will you come to meeting room B? (female host in room B; motion toward her center)
In the stated host context, มา is the neutral invitation. The ไป version becomes possible only after the center changes—for example, if the speaker is elsewhere and treats room B as a destination away from both speakers.
The same contrast survives after a manner verb:
เขาเดินไปที่ประตูหลังครับ
khao doen pai thi pratu lang khrap
He walked away toward the back door. (male speaker; path away from the current center)
เขาเดินมาที่ประตูหลังครับ
khao doen ma thi pratu lang khrap
He walked over toward the back door. (male speaker positioned at or adopting the back door as center)
And it survives with a carried object:
ช่วยเอาแฟ้มสีฟ้าไปด้วยค่ะ
chuai ao faem si fa pai duai kha
Please take the blue folder along. (female speaker; carry it away from here)
ช่วยเอาแฟ้มสีฟ้ามาด้วยค่ะ
chuai ao faem si fa ma duai kha
Please bring the blue folder along. (female speaker; carry it toward the meeting center)
Here เอา + object + ไป/มา packages handling and direction in one predicate. English word order is not a template: Thai does not put an infinitive marker before the purpose verb or an obligatory article before the object.
Purpose and the adopted destination
Before another action, ไป/มา frequently establishes where that action will occur. ไปยื่นเอกสาร presents travel away to submit documents; มายื่นเอกสาร presents arrival at the relevant counter to submit them.
พรุ่งนี้ผมจะไปยื่นเอกสารที่มหาวิทยาลัยครับ
phrung ni phom cha pai yuen ekkasan thi mahawitthayalai khrap
Tomorrow I'll go submit the documents at the university. (male speaker; away-motion plus purpose)
ผู้สมัครหลายคนมายื่นเอกสารที่สำนักงานแล้วค่ะ
phu samak lai khon ma yuen ekkasan thi samnakngan laeo kha
Several applicants have come to submit documents at the office. (female staff member at the office; arrival plus purpose)
The second action is an unchanged Thai verb, not an English-style infinitive. See go-purpose sequences and come-purpose sequences for their fuller argument patterns.
Aspect and scope preserve direction
Aspect does not turn one direction into the other. At a pickup point, รถมาแล้ว reports arrival toward the center; รถไปแล้ว reports that the vehicle has departed from it.
รถรับส่งมาแล้วค่ะ ลงมาที่หน้าตึกได้เลย
rot rap song ma laeo kha long ma thi na tuek dai loei
The shuttle has arrived; you can come down to the front of the building now. (female speaker at the pickup point)
รถรับส่งไปแล้วครับ รอบต่อไปอีกยี่สิบนาที
rot rap song pai laeo khrap rop to pai ik yi sip nathi
The shuttle has left; the next run is in twenty minutes. (male speaker at the departure point)
Negation scopes immediately before the motion expression. ยังไม่มา is an unfulfilled expectation of arrival, whereas ยังไม่ไป means the departure has not happened.
ฝ่ายบัญชียังไม่มาค่ะ แต่ฝ่ายกฎหมายไปแล้ว
fai banchi yang mai ma kha tae fai kotmai pai laeo
The accounting team hasn't arrived yet, but the legal team has already left. (female speaker at the shared venue)
Thai does not conjugate มา or ไป for tense. Time words and particles such as จะ, แล้ว, and ยังไม่ supply the temporal viewpoint; subjects may be omitted when conversation already identifies them.
Resolve an ambiguous sentence with one cue
พรุ่งนี้คุณจะไปไหมคะ
phrung ni khun cha pai mai kha
Will you go tomorrow? (destination and center are recoverable only from context)
Add a destination away from the present office and ไป becomes secure:
พรุ่งนี้คุณจะไปสำนักงานสาขาไหมคะ
phrung ni khun cha pai samnakngan sakha mai kha
Will you go to the branch office tomorrow? (female speaker at another location)
Add the speaker's present location and มา becomes required for the intended invitation:
พรุ่งนี้คุณจะมาที่สำนักงานนี้ไหมคะ
phrung ni khun cha ma thi samnakngan ni mai kha
Will you come to this office tomorrow? (female speaker adopts this office as center)
Formal dialogue
An event coordinator writes to an invited presenter. The conference is the shared destination even though it takes place later.
อาจารย์จะมาร่วมการประชุมวันศุกร์นี้ไหมคะ
achan cha ma ruam kan prachum wan suk ni mai kha
Will you come participate in the conference this Friday? (formal-polite invitation, female coordinator)
ผมจะไปถึงศูนย์ประชุมประมาณแปดโมงครึ่งครับ
phom cha pai thueng sun prachum praman paet mong khrueng khrap
I'll arrive at the conference center at about 8:30. (formal-polite reply, male presenter; traveler's away-path viewpoint)
ถ้าอย่างนั้น กรุณามาลงทะเบียนที่โต๊ะด้านหน้าก่อนนะคะ
tha yang nan karuna ma long thabian thi to dan na kon na kha
In that case, please come register at the front desk first. (formal-polite instruction, female coordinator at the event center)
The alternation is coherent: the host's มา adopts the event center, while the traveler describes his route with ไปถึง.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
เย็นนี้แวะมาที่บ้านหน่อยได้ไหมคะ
yen ni wae ma thi ban noi dai mai kha
Could you stop by my house this evening? (ordinary polite request, female speaker at/adopting home as center)
ได้ครับ ผมจะเอาขนมไปฝากด้วย
dai khrap phom cha ao khanom pai fak duai
Sure. I'll take some snacks along for you too. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; carried away from his current place)
ดีค่ะ พอมาถึงแล้วโทรหาฉันนะคะ
di kha pho ma thueng laeo tho ha chan na kha
Great. When you arrive, call me. (ordinary polite reply, female speaker; arrival toward home)
Common Mistakes
1. Ignoring an explicit center
❌ ตอนนี้ผมรออยู่ที่ร้าน คุณจะไปไหมครับ
Wrong for the intended invitation toward the speaker waiting at the restaurant; ไป sends the path away from that center.
✅ ตอนนี้ผมรออยู่ที่ร้าน คุณจะมาไหมครับ
ton ni phom ro yu thi ran khun cha ma mai khrap
I'm waiting at the restaurant now. Will you come? (male speaker; motion toward him)
2. Treating English “bring” as a separate Thai order
❌ กรุณาเอามาหนังสือสองเล่มค่ะ
Incorrect neutral order: the carried object belongs between เอา and directional มา.
✅ กรุณาเอาหนังสือสองเล่มมาด้วยค่ะ
karuna ao nangsue song lem ma duai kha
Please bring two books along. (formal-polite request, female speaker; correct noun-number-classifier order)
3. Copying an English infinitive
❌ พวกเราจะไปที่จะกินข้าวครับ
Incorrect neutral purpose sequence; Thai does not insert ที่จะ as an obligatory equivalent of English “to.”
✅ พวกเราจะไปกินข้าวแถวมหาวิทยาลัยครับ
phuak rao cha pai kin khao thaeo mahawitthayalai khrap
We're going to eat near the university. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
4. Reading แล้ว as past conjugation
❌ เมื่อวานแขกแล้วมาที่โรงแรมค่ะ
Incorrect—แล้ว cannot stand before มา as an English-style past auxiliary.
✅ เมื่อวานแขกมาที่โรงแรมค่ะ
muea wan khaek ma thi rongraem kha
The guest came to the hotel yesterday. (female speaker; เมื่อวาน supplies past time without changing มา)
✅ แขกมาแล้วค่ะ เชิญนั่งรอข้างในได้เลย
khaek ma laeo kha choen nang ro khang nai dai loei
The guest has arrived; please have a seat inside. (female speaker; แล้ว marks a current arrival, not a conjugated verb)
Key Takeaways
- ไป points away from the adopted center; มา points toward it.
- Speaker, listener, host, or shared destination can supply that center.
- Position matters: ไป/มา + action often expresses motion-purpose, while verb/object + ไป/มา gives direction.
- Aspect and negation preserve the directional contrast: มาแล้ว, ไปแล้ว, ยังไม่มา, ยังไม่ไป.
- Thai omits recoverable subjects and does not copy English articles, infinitives, or tense auxiliaries.
