Both พูด and บอก can appear in English translations containing say, speak, or tell, but they organize the participants differently. พูด profiles the act or manner of speaking: speaking Thai, speaking softly, talking about work, or speaking with someone. บอก profiles a message moving to an addressee: tell someone a fact, inform them of a plan, or tell them to act.
The safest choice comes from the predicate frame, not from one English word. Ask whether the sentence is about speech activity or directed information, then place the addressee and content in the Thai construction that choice licenses.
Compact comparison
| Meaning wanted | พูด | บอก |
|---|---|---|
| speech/language/manner | พูดภาษาไทย, พูดเบา ๆ | normally impossible |
| interlocutor | พูดกับ + person | บอก + person |
| propositional content | พูดว่า + clause | บอกว่า + clause |
| addressee plus content | พูดกับเขาว่า... | บอกเขาว่า... |
| directive | พูดให้... is not neutral “tell” | บอก + person + ให้ + action; also บอกให้ + person + action |
| formal alternatives | กล่าว, กล่าวถึง | แจ้ง, แจ้งให้ทราบ |
Decision tree
- Is the predicate about producing speech, a language, topic, voice, or manner? Choose พูด: พูดภาษาไทย, พูดช้า ๆ, พูดเรื่องงาน.
- Is there a recipient who receives information? Choose บอก, followed directly by that person: บอกลูกค้า.
- Is another person merely the conversational partner? Use พูดกับ + person. A bare person after พูด is not the neutral counterpart of English speak to.
- Is the complement a proposition? Use ว่า with either verb, but retain the focus: พูดว่า reports wording or utterance; บอกว่า reports information supplied.
- Is the complement an instruction? A common frame is บอก + person + ให้ + action. Thai also allows บอกให้ + person + action when the actor is packaged inside the directive complement. In both layouts, ให้ introduces the action to be realized.
- What is negated or completed? ไม่ได้พูดกับเขา denies the conversation; ไม่ได้บอกเขา denies delivery of information. พูดแล้ว means the speaking has occurred; บอกแล้ว means the telling has been done.
- Does the situation require institutional formality? พูด and บอก remain grammatical, but กล่าว and แจ้ง may better fit a speech, notice, or official letter.
Physical deictic center does not select between these verbs: both can describe speech here, there, or by phone. The relevant “direction” is participant structure—whether the clause profiles speech activity or information reaching a recipient.
Minimal pairs: activity versus transmission
Keep the people constant:
เมื่อเช้าผมพูดกับคุณอ้อมครับ
muea chao phom phut kap khun om khrap
I spoke with Khun Om this morning. (male speaker; conversational activity, no particular message asserted)
เมื่อเช้าผมบอกคุณอ้อมครับ
muea chao phom bok khun om khrap
I told Khun Om this morning. (male speaker; a message is understood from context)
The first requires กับ for the conversational partner. The second takes the informed person directly. With no recoverable message, บอกคุณอ้อม may leave the listener asking “told her what?”, while พูดกับคุณอ้อม can simply report that a conversation occurred.
Now hold the clause constant:
เขาพูดว่าการประชุมเลื่อนค่ะ
khao phut wa kan prachum luean kha
He said that the meeting was postponed. (female reporter; wording or speech event foregrounded)
เขาบอกว่าการประชุมเลื่อนค่ะ
khao bok wa kan prachum luean kha
He said/informed us that the meeting was postponed. (female reporter; information transfer foregrounded)
Both are grammatical. Context chooses the viewpoint, not tense: Thai speech verbs do not conjugate. If the source spoke but did not address the relevant listener, พูด is possible while บอก may falsely imply directed transmission.
Where one choice is impossible
Language ability and speech manner select พูด:
พนักงานคนนี้พูดภาษาญี่ปุ่นได้ครับ
phanakngan khon ni phut phasa yipun dai khrap
This employee can speak Japanese. (male speaker; language ability)
Replacing พูด with บอก would not mean “speak Japanese”; บอก needs information or an addressee frame. Conversely, a direct informed person selects บอก:
ช่วยบอกคนขับให้จอดตรงนี้ด้วยค่ะ
chuai bok khon khap hai chot trong ni duai kha
Please tell the driver to stop here. (ordinary polite request, female speaker; recipient plus directive complement)
พูดคนขับ is not neutral Thai for “speak to the driver.” Use พูดกับคนขับ if the point is conversation, or retain บอก when the point is delivering this request.
Manner can modify either actual event, but the semantic focus differs:
กรุณาพูดช้าลงอีกนิดได้ไหมคะ
karuna phut cha long ik nit dai mai kha
Could you please speak a little more slowly? (polite request, female speaker; speech manner)
เธอบอกข่าวนั้นด้วยเสียงเบามากค่ะ
thoe bok khao nan duai siang bao mak kha
She told the news in a very quiet voice. (female reporter; directed message whose manner is separately expressed)
The second sentence is possible because ด้วยเสียงเบามาก describes how the telling occurred. It does not make บอก a general verb for “speak quietly.”
Directives with บอกให้
For “tell someone to do X,” Thai puts the addressee after บอก and the requested event after ให้:
ผู้จัดการบอกทีมให้ตรวจตัวเลขอีกครั้งครับ
phu chatkan bok thim hai truat tua lek ik khrang khrap
The manager told the team to check the figures again. (workplace report, male speaker)
Thai also uses บอกให้ + person + action, especially when no recipient has first been established as a separate argument:
หมอบอกให้ผมพักงานสองวันครับ
mo bok hai phom phak ngan song wan khrap
The doctor told me to take two days off work. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; ผม is the actor inside the directive complement)
The participant after บอก receives the instruction and controls the following action. Compare a proposition:
ผู้จัดการบอกทีมว่าตัวเลขยังไม่ถูกครับ
phu chatkan bok thim wa tua lek yang mai thuk khrap
The manager told the team that the figures were still incorrect. (male speaker; ว่า introduces information, not an instruction)
ให้ตรวจ and ว่าตัวเลข... are different complement types. English tell hides that contrast; Thai makes it visible. The ว่า-complement guide and ให้-complement guide develop the two patterns.
Scope, aspect, and omitted participants
เมื่อกี้ฉันไม่ได้พูดกับหมอค่ะ
muea ki chan mai dai phut kap mo kha
I didn't speak with the doctor just now. (female speaker; the interaction did not occur)
เมื่อกี้ฉันไม่ได้บอกหมอเรื่องยาใหม่ค่ะ
muea ki chan mai dai bok mo rueang ya mai kha
I didn't tell the doctor about the new medication just now. (female speaker; the information was not delivered)
With clear context, Thai may omit subject, addressee, or message: บอกแล้วค่ะ “I've already told [them/you].” That economy is not vagueness when the discourse supplies the missing role. English learners should not insert a pronoun merely because English requires one.
บอกแล้วครับว่าไฟลต์เลื่อนไปวันพรุ่งนี้
bok laeo khrap wa flai luean pai wan phrung ni
I've already told [them/you] that the flight was moved to tomorrow. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; omitted recoverable participants)
Resolve ambiguity with an added cue
นิดพูดกับหัวหน้าแล้วค่ะ
nit phut kap hua na laeo kha
Nit has spoken with the supervisor. (the existence of a conversation is foregrounded; content remains open)
Add content and the information-transfer reading becomes explicit:
นิดบอกหัวหน้าแล้วว่าจะลาพรุ่งนี้ค่ะ
nit bok hua na laeo wa cha la phrung ni kha
Nit has told the supervisor that she will take leave tomorrow. (female speaker; recipient and proposition explicit)
Formal dialogue
ท่านประธานได้กล่าวว่าโครงการจะเริ่มเดือนหน้าครับ
than prathan dai klao wa khrongkan cha roem duean na khrap
The chair stated that the project will begin next month. (formal report, male speaker; กล่าว fits a public statement)
กรุณาบอกผู้เข้าร่วมด้วยว่ากำหนดการเปลี่ยนแล้วค่ะ
karuna bok phu khao ruam duai wa kamnotkan plian laeo kha
Please also tell the participants that the schedule has changed. (formal-polite request, female speaker; directed information)
รับทราบครับ ฝ่ายเลขานุการจะแจ้งทุกท่านภายในวันนี้
rap sap khrap fai lekhanukan cha chaeng thuk than phainai wan ni
Acknowledged. The secretariat will notify everyone today. (formal reply, male speaker; แจ้ง as institutional alternative)
The dialogue shows register choice without pretending that Thai has a separate formal grammar. The argument structures remain recognizable; formal vocabulary changes.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
เมื่อกี้คุณพูดกับช่างหรือยังคะ
muea ki khun phut kap chang rue yang kha
Have you spoken with the technician yet? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
พูดแล้วครับ ผมบอกเขาว่าก๊อกน้ำรั่ว
phut laeo khrap phom bok khao wa kok nam rua
Yes. I told him that the faucet is leaking. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
แล้วบอกให้เขามาตอนบ่ายหรือเปล่าคะ
laeo bok hai khao ma ton bai rue plao kha
And did you tell him to come in the afternoon? (female speaker; directive complement)
บอกแล้วครับ เขาจะโทรมาก่อนถึง
bok laeo khrap khao cha tho ma kon thueng
Yes. He'll call before he arrives. (male speaker; omitted message recoverable from context)
Common Mistakes
1. Putting a conversational partner directly after พูด
❌ เมื่อวานฉันพูดผู้จัดการค่ะ
Incorrect for neutral “I spoke with the manager”; พูด needs กับ before the conversational partner.
✅ เมื่อวานฉันพูดกับผู้จัดการเรื่องวันหยุดค่ะ
muea wan chan phut kap phu chatkan rueang wan yut kha
Yesterday I spoke with the manager about the holiday. (female speaker; partner and topic explicit)
2. Using บอก for language ability
❌ เขาบอกภาษาไทยได้ดีครับ
Incorrect for “He speaks Thai well”; บอก does not name language ability.
✅ เขาพูดภาษาไทยได้คล่องครับ
khao phut phasa thai dai khlong khrap
He speaks Thai fluently. (ordinary polite assessment, male speaker)
3. Losing the addressee before a directive
❌ หัวหน้าบอกส่งเอกสารวันนี้ค่ะ
Incomplete for the intended “The supervisor told me to send it”; the instructed participant is missing without supporting context.
✅ หัวหน้าบอกฉันให้ส่งเอกสารวันนี้ค่ะ
hua na bok chan hai song ekkasan wan ni kha
The supervisor told me to send the documents today. (female speaker; addressee controls ส่ง)
4. Adding an English-style obligatory subject
✅ บอกไปแล้วค่ะ ไม่ต้องโทรซ้ำ
bok pai laeo kha mai tong tho sam
I've already told [them]; no need to call again. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; omitted roles are contextually clear)
Key Takeaways
- Choose พูด for speech activity, language, topic, voice, or manner.
- Choose บอก for information directed to a recipient; that person follows บอก directly.
- Use พูดกับ + person for a conversational partner, บอก + person + ว่า for information, and บอก + person + ให้ or บอกให้ + person for an instruction.
- Negation and aspect operate on different events: conversation versus successful telling.
- Formal Thai may prefer กล่าว or แจ้ง, but the change is lexical and relational, not a new grammar.
