ว่า Clauses after Speech and Thought

Thai ว่า introduces the content of speech, thought, belief, and other mental or communicative acts. In เขาบอกว่าพรุ่งนี้ร้านปิด “he said that the shop is closed tomorrow,” บอก frames a report and ว่า opens the proposition being reported. That proposition can have its own subject, time, aspect, and polarity.

English that is a useful first translation, but the correspondence is not one-to-one. Thai ว่า also introduces direct wording and embedded questions, while some conversational complements omit it. Most importantly, it is not an infinitive marker: the material after ว่า is interpreted as clausal content, not automatically as another action by the first subject.

Speech and thought select propositional content

After a speech verb, the complement presents what was said, announced, answered, or confirmed. After a cognition verb, it presents what is thought, believed, understood, or suspected.

ฝ่ายบัญชีแจ้งว่าระบบรับชำระเงินได้แล้วค่ะ

fai banchi chaeng wa rabop rap chamra ngoen dai laeo kha

The accounts department informed us that the system can accept payments now. (ordinary polite workplace report, female speaker)

ผมเชื่อว่าทีมจะแก้ปัญหานี้ได้ครับ

phom chuea wa thim cha kae panha ni dai khrap

I believe the team will be able to solve this problem. (ordinary polite opinion, male speaker)

The verb after ว่า remains invariant. รับ, แก้, and ได้ do not acquire a reported-speech form. The embedded subject may be different from the speaker or thinker: ฝ่ายบัญชี does the informing, but ระบบ accepts payments; ผม believes, but ทีม solves the problem.

💡
Treat ว่า as a visible clause boundary. Read what follows as a proposition and locate its own subject, predicate, time, and negation before deciding who does what.

Productive slots after ว่า

The framing predicate controls the kind of content that is natural, while the clause after ว่า is structurally flexible.

พูดว่าwords or claimพูดว่าจะโทรกลับneutral
บอก + addressee + ว่าinformation given to someoneบอกทีมว่าลูกค้ารออยู่neutral
คิด/เชื่อว่าthought or beliefคิดว่าคงไม่ทันneutral
ถามว่าreported questionถามว่าเปิดกี่โมงneutral

ประกาศว่าpublicly announced propositionประกาศว่างดให้บริการformal

พนักงานยืนยันว่าจะส่งสินค้าให้ทันวันศุกร์ครับ

phanak ngan yuenyan wa cha song sinkha hai than wan suk khrap

The employee confirmed that the goods would be delivered by Friday. (formal-polite workplace report, male speaker)

เธอถามว่ารถเที่ยวสุดท้ายออกกี่โมงค่ะ

thoe tham wa rot thiao sutthai ok ki mong kha

She asked what time the last bus leaves. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)

The embedded question keeps Thai word order: กี่โมง remains where the requested time belongs. There is no English-style auxiliary inversion.

Addressee before ว่า, proposition after ว่า

With บอก, a person placed before ว่า is normally the addressee. A participant placed after ว่า belongs to the reported proposition.

หัวหน้าบอกผมว่าลูกค้าขอเลื่อนนัดครับ

huana bok phom wa luk kha kho luean nat khrap

The supervisor told me that the customer had asked to postpone the appointment. (ordinary polite workplace report, male speaker)

The participant map is: หัวหน้า = source of the report, ผม = recipient, ลูกค้า = subject of ขอเลื่อนนัด. English tell me that... happens to show the same broad order, but Thai does not mark these roles with case endings. Position and the complement boundary do the work.

Information versus direction: a minimal contrast

ว่า and ให้ create different kinds of complement. บอกทีมว่า... supplies information to the team; บอกทีมให้... directs the team to perform an event.

ผู้จัดการบอกทีมว่าการประชุมเริ่มเก้าโมงค่ะ

phu chatkan bok thim wa kan prachum roem kao mong kha

The manager told the team that the meeting starts at nine. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; information)

ผู้จัดการบอกทีมให้เริ่มประชุมเก้าโมงค่ะ

phu chatkan bok thim hai roem prachum kao mong kha

The manager told the team to start the meeting at nine. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; directive)

In the first sentence, การประชุม is the subject of a proposition about schedule. In the second, ทีม is the addressee and understood actor of เริ่มประชุม. This is a participant-structure contrast, not a choice between two translations of English to.

Thai can also nest a directive inside a report as บอกว่าให้ + event. In หัวหน้าบอกว่าให้รอก่อน “the supervisor said to wait first,” ว่า opens the reported content and ให้ marks the desired event inside it; the person expected to wait is recovered from context.

หัวหน้าบอกว่าให้รอก่อนครับ

huana bok wa hai ro kon khrap

The supervisor said to wait first. (ordinary polite report of a directive, male speaker; expected actor understood from context)

💡
Use บอก + person + ว่า + proposition to report information to that person, and บอก + person + ให้ + event to direct that person. When reporting a directive as content, บอกว่าให้ + event is also valid.

Direct wording and indirect report

In writing, quotation marks identify wording presented as direct speech. Without quotation marks, the clause is normally an indirect report shaped from the current reporter's viewpoint.

พิมพูดว่า “วันนี้ขอกลับก่อนนะคะ”

phim phut wa wan ni kho klap kon na kha

Phim said, ‘May I leave early today?’ (direct quotation; female quoted speaker)

พิมบอกว่าวันนั้นขอกลับก่อนค่ะ

phim bok wa wan nan kho klap kon kha

Phim said that she had asked to leave early that day. (ordinary polite indirect report, female speaker)

วันนี้ belongs to the original speaking situation; a later narrator can choose วันนั้น to clarify the shifted viewpoint. Thai does not force this replacement, just as it does not force English-style tense backshift. Clear dates or phrases such as วันรุ่งขึ้น “the following day” are often better when “today” or “tomorrow” would be ambiguous.

Time, aspect, and negation stay inside their scopes

A reporting verb referring to the past does not turn every following verb into a past form. Time expressions and aspect markers independently locate the speech event and the reported situation.

เมื่อเช้าเขาบอกว่าตอนเย็นจะเข้าประชุมครับ

muea chao khao bok wa ton yen cha khao prachum khrap

This morning he said that he would join the meeting in the evening. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

Negation before the framing predicate denies the report or thought; negation after ว่า belongs to its content.

ฉันไม่ได้ยืนยันว่าเอกสารครบค่ะ

chan mai dai yuenyan wa ekkasan khrop kha

I did not confirm that the documents were complete. (ordinary polite correction, female speaker; confirmation denied)

ฉันยืนยันว่าเอกสารยังไม่ครบค่ะ

chan yuenyan wa ekkasan yang mai khrop kha

I confirm that the documents are not complete yet. (formal-polite statement, female speaker; embedded proposition negative)

No single Thai marker equals one English tense in every environment. จะ presents a prospective or modal viewpoint here; ยังไม่ presents a situation that has not yet held. Neither inflects the following verb.

Why this is a complement, not mere serialization

The clause after ว่า fills an argument slot of the speech or thought predicate: it answers “what was said/thought?” It can contain its own overt subject and a full predicate chain. That makes the boundary stronger than in a same-subject chain such as เดินไปซื้อกาแฟ “walk over to buy coffee.” It is also not simple coordination, because the second proposition is presented inside someone's words or mind rather than asserted independently by the narrator.

Frequent sequences such as คิดว่า and บอกว่า should not be treated as indivisible lexical compounds. The framing verb can be negated or aspectually located, an addressee can intervene after บอก, and the complement can be replaced by many different propositions. Compare the diagnostics on serial versus lexical compounds.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

Two colleagues clarify an announcement:

ฝ่ายอาคารแจ้งว่าอย่างไรบ้างคะ

fai akhan chaeng wa yangrai bang kha

What did the facilities department say? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)

เขาแจ้งว่าจะปิดน้ำตอนบ่ายสองครับ

khao chaeng wa cha pit nam ton bai song khrap

They said that the water would be shut off at two in the afternoon. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)

เขาบอกไหมคะว่าจะเปิดอีกทีเมื่อไร

khao bok mai kha wa cha poet ik thi muearai

Did they say when it would be turned on again? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)

บอกว่าประมาณสี่โมงครับ แต่ยังไม่ยืนยัน

bok wa praman si mong khrap tae yang mai yuenyan

They said around four, but it hasn't been confirmed yet. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; source omitted recoverably)

Common Mistakes

1. Treating ว่า like an infinitive marker

❌ ฉันคิดที่จะเขาจะมาสายค่ะ

Incorrect—the proposition after คิด requires ว่า, not the prospective relative sequence ที่จะ.

✅ ฉันคิดว่าเขาจะมาสายค่ะ

chan khit wa khao cha ma sai kha

I think he will arrive late. (ordinary polite opinion, female speaker)

2. Using ว่า for an intended indirect directive

❌ หัวหน้าบอกพนักงานว่าปิดไฟก่อนกลับครับ

Incorrect for the intended indirect command; ว่า packages reported wording or information but does not assign the employee the directive event in this frame.

✅ หัวหน้าบอกพนักงานให้ปิดไฟก่อนกลับครับ

huana bok phanak ngan hai pit fai kon klap khrap

The supervisor told the employee to turn off the lights before leaving. (ordinary polite workplace report, male speaker)

3. Inventing past agreement inside reported speech

❌ เมื่อเช้าเธอบอกว่าได้เหนื่อยมากค่ะ

Incorrect for a neutral report of being tired; ได้ is not inserted simply because the speaking happened earlier.

✅ เมื่อเช้าเธอบอกว่าเหนื่อยมากและขอพักค่ะ

muea chao thoe bok wa nueai mak lae kho phak kha

This morning she said she was very tired and asked to rest. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)

4. Copying English negative-auxiliary order

❌ เขาบอกว่าไม่จะเข้าประชุมครับ

Incorrect word order—when the prospective event is negative, จะ precedes ไม่.

✅ เขาบอกว่าจะไม่เข้าประชุมช่วงบ่ายครับ

khao bok wa cha mai khao prachum chuang bai khrap

He said that he would not join the afternoon meeting. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • ว่า opens propositional content after speech and thought predicates; that content can have its own subject, aspect, time, and polarity.
  • บอก + addressee + ว่า reports information, while บอก + addressee + ให้ directs an event; บอกว่าให้ + event can report a directive whose actor is understood from context.
  • Thai does not backshift or conjugate verbs in reported speech; viewpoint and context do the temporal work.
  • A ว่า complement is neither an English infinitive nor simple coordination, even when the English translation compresses several Thai predicates.
