คิด, รู้, รู้จัก, and เข้าใจ

English think, know, and understand conceal several Thai lexical frames. คิด presents thinking, considering, or holding an opinion. รู้ concerns facts, information, and awareness. รู้จัก concerns acquaintance or familiarity with a person, place, or identifiable domain. เข้าใจ means understand a message, system, person, or situation. The forms never conjugate, but their complements and aspectual behavior differ.

Four predicates, four starting questions

Choose the predicate by asking what kind of cognitive relation the speaker asserts—not by replacing the English verb mechanically.

PredicateCore questionProductive frame
คิดWhat is someone thinking or considering?คิดเรื่อง... / คิดว่า + clause
รู้What fact or information is known?รู้คำตอบ / รู้ว่า + clause
รู้จักWho or what is familiar?รู้จัก + person/place/work
เข้าใจWhat meaning, person, or system is understood?เข้าใจ + object/clause

ฉันกำลังคิดเรื่องย้ายงานค่ะ

chan kamlang khit rueang yai ngan kha

I'm thinking about changing jobs. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; active deliberation)

ผมรู้คำตอบแล้วครับ

phom ru khamtop laeo khrap

I know the answer now. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; newly acquired knowledge)

ฉันรู้จักร้านนี้ค่ะ เจ้าของใจดีมาก

chan ru chak ran ni kha chao khong chai di mak

I know this shop; the owner is very kind. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; familiarity with a place)

ตอนนี้ผมเข้าใจวิธีใช้แล้วครับ

ton ni phom khao chai withi chai laeo khrap

Now I understand how to use it. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; understanding reached)

The nouns and clauses after these predicates fill different semantic roles. A person can be the object of เข้าใจ when the meaning is empathic or interpretive—ฉันเข้าใจคุณ “I understand you”—but ordinary acquaintance is รู้จักคุณ, not bare รู้.

💡
Match the object to the relation: รู้ + information, รู้จัก + familiar entity, เข้าใจ + meaning/system/person, คิด + topic/opinion. English know is too broad to choose for you.

คิด: process, consideration, and opinion

คิด can present an active mental process, a plan, or a view. A topic often follows เรื่อง; a propositional opinion commonly follows ว่า. In conversation, the subject can disappear when the thinker is obvious. The ว่า-complement page examines when ว่า appears or is omitted across cognition and speech predicates.

เราต้องคิดเรื่องงบประมาณอีกครั้งค่ะ

rao tong khit rueang ngoppraman ik khrang kha

We need to think about the budget again. (ordinary workplace speech, female speaker; topic with เรื่อง)

ผมคิดว่ารถไฟน่าจะเร็วกว่ารถบัสครับ

phom khit wa rotfai na cha reo kwa rot bat khrap

I think the train will probably be faster than the bus. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; opinion with ว่า-clause)

ขอคิดดูก่อนนะคะ แล้วจะตอบพรุ่งนี้

kho khit du kon na kha laeo cha top phrung ni

Let me think it over first; I'll answer tomorrow. (polite speech, female speaker; subject and issue recoverable)

In คิดดู, following ดู invites examination or trying out a thought. It is not an infinitive. กำลังคิด is natural when the mental activity is unfolding; stable knowing normally behaves differently.

รู้: facts, information, and awareness

รู้ takes a known item or a clause introduced by ว่า: รู้ชื่อ, รู้คำตอบ, รู้ว่าเขามาแล้ว. It can also mean know how in some lexical expressions, but learners should not use it as a universal substitute for English know.

คุณรู้ชื่อผู้จัดการไหมคะ

khun ru chue phu chatkan mai kha

Do you know the manager's name? (polite question, female speaker; information object)

ผมรู้ว่าการประชุมย้ายไปห้องใหญ่แล้วครับ

phom ru wa kan prachum yai pai hong yai laeo khrap

I know that the meeting has moved to the large room. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; fact with ว่า-clause)

With a stable state of knowledge, กำลังรู้ is not the neutral equivalent of English am knowing. Thai normally uses bare รู้, รู้แล้ว for entry into knowledge, or an active process verb such as กำลังเรียนรู้ “be learning.”

ตอนแรกฉันไม่รู้ค่ะ แต่ตอนนี้รู้แล้ว

ton raek chan mai ru kha tae ton ni ru laeo

At first I didn't know, but now I do. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; change into knowledge)

รู้จัก: acquaintance and familiarity

รู้จัก packages รู้ + จัก as the conventional predicate for being acquainted with or familiar with someone or something. It takes its entity directly: รู้จักคุณนิด, รู้จักกรุงเทพฯ ดี, รู้จักหนังเรื่องนี้. Familiarity is gradient, so degree and duration can follow naturally.

ผมรู้จักคุณนิดมาหลายปีแล้วครับ

phom ru chak khun nit ma lai pi laeo khrap

I've known Khun Nit for many years. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; continuing acquaintance)

ฉันไม่ค่อยรู้จักแถวนี้ค่ะ

chan mai khoi ru chak thaeo ni kha

I'm not very familiar with this area. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; limited familiarity)

The first sentence uses มา...แล้ว to relate an acquaintance extending up to now. The predicate itself does not acquire a perfect form. The second uses ไม่ค่อย “not very/often” before the predicate; English auxiliary order is irrelevant.

เข้าใจ: grasping meaning or perspective

เข้าใจ can take language, an explanation, a problem, a person, or a clause. It is stronger than merely possessing a fact: the experiencer grasps how the information fits together or what someone means.

เด็กเข้าใจคำอธิบายนี้ไหมคะ

dek khao chai kham athibai ni mai kha

Does the child understand this explanation? (polite question, female speaker; message as object)

ผมเข้าใจว่าต้องส่งก่อนวันศุกร์ครับ

phom khao chai wa tong song kon wan suk khrap

I understand that it must be submitted before Friday. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; understood proposition)

ฉันเข้าใจคุณนะคะ แต่ยังช่วยไม่ได้

chan khao chai khun na kha tae yang chuai mai dai

I understand you, but I still can't help. (empathetic polite speech, female speaker; person as object of understanding)

In the last example, นะคะ softens and affirms empathy. It does not change the argument frame of เข้าใจ.

💡
Knowing a statement and understanding it are different claims. รู้ว่าต้องทำอะไร says the required action is known; เข้าใจว่าทำไมต้องทำ says the reason or logic is understood.

Negation and result-sensitive combinations

Negation precedes the basic state: ไม่รู้, ไม่รู้จัก, ไม่เข้าใจ. But some combinations place a negative before a result predicate: คิดไม่ออก means be unable to think of/retrieve an answer, not simply refuse to think. นึกไม่ถึง or คิดไม่ถึง presents something as beyond expectation.

ผมคิดชื่อโครงการไม่ออกครับ

phom khit chue khrongkan mai ok khrap

I can't think of a name for the project. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; failed mental retrieval)

ฉันไม่เข้าใจคำถามสุดท้ายค่ะ

chan mai khao chai khamtham sutthai kha

I don't understand the final question. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; understanding denied)

Thai thus distinguishes ไม่คิด “not think/intend” from คิดไม่ออก “cannot think it out.” Scope and lexical combination matter more than a single translation of not.

Time and omission

All four predicates remain unchanged across time. เมื่อก่อนรู้จัก, ตอนนี้เข้าใจ, and พรุ่งนี้ค่อยคิด receive their temporal interpretation from the clause. Objects and subjects can be omitted only when recoverable.

เรื่องนี้รู้แล้วค่ะ ไม่ต้องอธิบายซ้ำ

rueang ni ru laeo kha mai tong athibai sam

I know about this already; you don't need to explain it again. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; experiencer omitted)

Ordinary-polite dialogue

รู้จักร้านอาหารใกล้ ๆ ไหมคะ

ru chak ran ahan klai klai mai kha

Do you know a restaurant nearby? (polite question, female speaker; addressee omitted)

รู้จักครับ ร้านตรงหัวมุมอร่อยมาก

ru chak khrap ran trong hua mum aroi mak

Yes. The place on the corner is very good. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; familiar place omitted after รู้จัก)

คิดว่าต้องจองโต๊ะไหมคะ

khit wa tong chong to mai kha

Do you think we need to reserve a table? (polite question, female speaker)

ผมไม่รู้ครับ เดี๋ยวโทรไปถาม

phom mai ru khrap diao tho pai tham

I don't know. I'll call and ask. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)

Common Mistakes

1. Using รู้ for acquaintance

❌ ผมรู้คุณนิดครับ

Incorrect for ordinary personal acquaintance—use รู้จัก.

✅ ผมรู้จักคุณนิดจากที่ทำงานครับ

phom ru chak khun nit chak thi tham ngan khrap

I know Khun Nit from work. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

2. Using รู้จัก for a proposition

❌ ฉันรู้จักว่าพรุ่งนี้ร้านปิดค่ะ

Incorrect—factual clause content takes รู้ว่า, not acquaintance predicate รู้จัก.

✅ ฉันรู้ว่าพรุ่งนี้ร้านปิดค่ะ

chan ru wa phrung ni ran pit kha

I know that the shop is closed tomorrow. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

3. Adding เป็น before เข้าใจ

❌ ตอนนี้ผมเป็นเข้าใจแล้วครับ

Incorrect—เข้าใจ predicates directly.

✅ ตอนนี้ผมเข้าใจปัญหาแล้วครับ

ton ni phom khao chai panha laeo khrap

Now I understand the problem. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

4. Forcing progressive กำลัง onto stable knowledge

❌ ตอนนี้ฉันกำลังรู้คำตอบค่ะ

Unnatural for neutral 'I know the answer now'; the sentence presents a stable state.

✅ ตอนนี้ฉันรู้คำตอบแล้วค่ะ

ton ni chan ru khamtop laeo kha

Now I know the answer. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

5. Moving ไม่ after a cognition object

❌ ผมเข้าใจคำถามไม่ครับ

Incorrect for plain 'I don't understand the question'; ไม่ precedes เข้าใจ.

✅ ผมไม่เข้าใจคำถามนี้ครับ

phom mai khao chai khamtham ni khrap

I don't understand this question. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

Key Takeaways

Use คิด for thinking or opinion, รู้ for facts and awareness, รู้จัก for acquaintance and familiarity, and เข้าใจ for grasping meaning or perspective. Learn each predicate with its object or clause frame, keep it invariant across time, and interpret aspect, omission, and negation according to the cognitive relation being expressed.
