รู้: know a fact; know how

Thai รู้ is the invariant predicate for possessing or coming into factual knowledge: knowing a name, an answer, a fact, or ว่า “that” something is true. It also appears in รู้วิธี + event “know the method for doing...” and in established awareness expressions such as รู้ตัว. English know also covers acquaintance and learned skill, but Thai normally assigns those relations to รู้จัก and event + เป็น instead.

Information and propositions

The simplest frame is knower + รู้ + information. A whole known proposition normally follows ว่า. Subjects and known content may be omitted when the conversation makes them recoverable.

ผมรู้รหัสประตูสำนักงานครับ

phom ru rahat pratu samnakngan khrap

I know the office door code. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker; information object)

ฉันรู้ว่ารถเที่ยวสุดท้ายออกตอนสี่ทุ่มค่ะ

chan ru wa rot thiao sutthai ok ton si thum kha

I know that the last service leaves at ten at night. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; proposition with ว่า)

คุณรู้วิธีเปิดไฟล์ชนิดนี้ไหมครับ

khun ru withi poet fai chanit ni mai khrap

Do you know how to open this type of file? (ordinary polite workplace question, male speaker; explicit procedural knowledge)

รู้ว่า introduces content; it is not an English infinitive complement. The ว่า-complement page explains its behavior across cognition and speech predicates.

💡
Ask what is known. Use รู้ + information or รู้ว่า + proposition, but รู้จัก + entity for acquaintance. English uses know for all three and therefore cannot choose the Thai frame for you.

Knowing a method versus having a learned skill

รู้วิธี + event foregrounds procedural knowledge: the person knows the steps or method. event + เป็น commonly presents a learned ability such as swimming, driving, or typing. A person may know the method in theory without being able to perform smoothly.

ฉันรู้วิธีเปลี่ยนยางค่ะ แต่เปลี่ยนเองยังไม่เป็น

chan ru withi plian yang kha tae plian eng yang mai pen

I know the steps for changing a tire, but I still don't know how to do it myself. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; method versus acquired skill)

พี่ชายผมขับรถเป็นครับ แต่ไม่รู้วิธีซ่อมเครื่องยนต์

phi chai phom khap rot pen khrap tae mai ru withi som khrueang yon

My older brother can drive, but he doesn't know how to repair an engine. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; learned skill versus method)

Thai also permits lexical combinations that must be learned on their own. รู้เรื่อง can mean “know about/understand the matter,” while รู้ตัว means be aware of oneself, one's condition, or one's conduct. These do not make รู้ a universal prefix for ability.

An invariant-form matrix—and why กำลัง is restricted

รู้ does not change with person or time. Stable possession of knowledge normally resists progressive กำลัง, just as English ordinarily avoids I am knowing. Thai uses bare รู้, รู้แล้ว for entry into knowledge, or กำลังเรียนรู้ “be learning.” The natural combination กำลังจะรู้ means “be about to find out”: here กำลังจะ is near-future, not ongoing knowledge.

EnvironmentThai patternInterpretation source
past contextเมื่อวานผมรู้ข่าวจากโรงเรียนเมื่อวาน locates coming into knowledge
near-future, not progressiveฉันกำลังจะรู้ผลตรวจกำลังจะ means “be about to”
new knowledgeเขารู้เหตุผลแล้วแล้ว presents the knowledge state as reached
future knowledgeพวกเราจะรู้ผลพรุ่งนี้จะ and พรุ่งนี้ locate expected knowledge
negative stateเขาไม่รู้ชื่อผู้ติดต่อไม่ before รู้ denies knowledge

เมื่อวานผมเพิ่งรู้ข่าวจากทางโรงเรียนครับ

muea wan phom phoeng ru khao chak thang rongrian khrap

Yesterday I only just learned the news from the school. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; past from context and recent discovery with เพิ่ง)

อีกไม่กี่นาทีฉันกำลังจะรู้ผลตรวจแล้วค่ะ

ik mai ki nathi chan kamlang cha ru phon truat laeo kha

In a few minutes I'm finally going to learn the test result. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; กำลังจะ is imminent, not progressive knowing)

เขารู้สาเหตุของปัญหาแล้วครับ

khao ru sahet khong panha laeo khrap

He knows the cause of the problem now. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker; state newly reached)

พรุ่งนี้พวกเราจะรู้ผลการสมัครค่ะ

phrung ni phuak rao cha ru phon kan samak kha

Tomorrow we'll know the application result. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; future from จะ and พรุ่งนี้)

No row changes the form รู้. เพิ่ง, แล้ว, จะ, and time expressions locate transitions into or possession of knowledge; they are not conjugational endings.

Negation, uncertainty, and questions

ไม่รู้ simply denies knowledge. ยังไม่รู้ says the information is not known yet, leaving open a later change. รู้ไหมว่า... asks whether the addressee knows a proposition and often also introduces noteworthy information in conversation.

ตอนนี้ฉันยังไม่รู้วันนัดค่ะ

ton ni chan yang mai ru wan nat kha

I still don't know the appointment date. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

รู้ไหมครับว่าทางเข้าย้ายไปอีกฝั่งแล้ว

ru mai khrap wa thang khao yai pai ik fang laeo

Did you know that the entrance has moved to the other side? (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; addressee omitted)

Do not add English auxiliary do: Thai says คุณรู้ไหม, not a structure with ทำ. Negation precedes the predicate: ไม่รู้คำตอบ. A negative inside the known proposition is different: รู้ว่าเขาไม่มา means “know that he is not coming.”

ผมไม่รู้ว่าเขาจะมาถึงกี่โมงครับ

phom mai ru wa khao cha ma thueng ki mong khrap

I don't know what time he will arrive. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; negation over knowing)

ผมรู้ว่าวันนี้เขาไม่เข้าประชุมครับ

phom ru wa wan ni khao mai khao prachum khrap

I know that he isn't attending the meeting today. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker; negation inside the known proposition)

💡
Negation before รู้ denies the knowledge relation: ไม่รู้ว่าเขาจะมากี่โมง “do not know what time he will come.” Negation inside the proposition preserves knowledge but negates its content: รู้ว่าเขาไม่มา “know that he is not coming.” To ask whether he will come, make the embedded alternative explicit: ไม่รู้ว่าเขาจะมาไหม.

ตอนล้มเขายังรู้ตัวอยู่ครับ

ton lom khao yang ru tua yu khrap

When he fell, he was still conscious. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; established รู้ตัว)

รู้ดี can be a neutral assertion of firm knowledge, but addressed sharply—คุณก็รู้ดี—it may sound accusatory. That is a pragmatic effect, not a different grammar.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

คุณรู้ไหมคะว่าห้องอบรมอยู่ชั้นไหน

khun ru mai kha wa hong oprom yu chan nai

Do you know which floor the training room is on? (ordinary polite workplace question, female speaker)

ผมยังไม่รู้ครับ แต่รู้ว่าอยู่ตึกใหม่

รู้ครับ เดี๋ยวผมพาไป

ru khrap diao phom pha pai

Yes. I'll take you there in a moment. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; route omitted recoverably)

Common Mistakes

1. Using รู้ for personal acquaintance

❌ ฉันรู้ผู้จัดการคนใหม่ค่ะ

Incorrect for ordinary acquaintance with the manager; use รู้จัก for familiarity with a person.

✅ ฉันรู้จักผู้จัดการคนใหม่จากงานก่อนค่ะ

chan ru chak phu chatkan khon mai chak ngan kon kha

I know the new manager from my previous job. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

2. Using รู้จักว่า for factual content

❌ ผมรู้จักว่ารถเที่ยวสุดท้ายออกแล้วครับ

Incorrect—propositional knowledge takes รู้ว่า, not acquaintance predicate รู้จัก.

✅ ผมรู้ว่ารถเที่ยวสุดท้ายออกแล้วครับ

phom ru wa rot thiao sutthai ok laeo khrap

I know that the last service has left. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

3. Placing an event directly after รู้ for “know how”

❌ น้องฉันรู้ขับรถค่ะ

Incorrect—use รู้วิธี + event for method knowledge or event + เป็น for learned skill.

✅ น้องฉันขับรถเป็นแล้วค่ะ

nong chan khap rot pen laeo kha

My younger sibling knows how to drive now. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; learned skill)

4. Forcing progressive กำลัง onto stable knowledge

❌ ตอนนี้เขากำลังรู้รหัสผ่านครับ

Incorrect for neutral stable knowledge; bare รู้ or รู้แล้ว is required.

✅ ตอนนี้เขารู้รหัสผ่านใหม่แล้วครับ

ton ni khao ru rahat phan mai laeo khrap

Now he knows the new password. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

5. Copying English auxiliary negation

❌ ฉันทำไม่รู้เวลาปิดค่ะ

Incorrect—Thai does not insert ทำ as auxiliary ‘do’ before ไม่.

✅ ฉันไม่รู้เวลาปิดค่ะ

chan mai ru wela pit kha

I don't know the closing time. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • รู้ + information and รู้ว่า + proposition express factual knowledge.
  • รู้วิธี + event names method knowledge; event + เป็น commonly names a learned practical skill.
  • Use รู้จัก, not bare รู้, for ordinary acquaintance with a person, place, work, or system.
  • Stable รู้ resists progressive กำลัง; กำลังจะรู้ is imminent discovery, not ongoing knowing.
  • Subjects and known content may be omitted only when recoverable from discourse.
