English uses know for several relationships that Thai keeps apart. รู้ presents knowledge or awareness of a fact, answer, name, method, or situation. รู้จัก presents acquaintance or familiarity: knowing a person, recognizing a place, or being familiar with a work, organization, or product.
The choice is not about how much knowledge you have. It is about the type of relation between the knower and the complement. You can รู้ many facts about a restaurant without ever visiting it, and you can รู้จัก the restaurant as a familiar place without knowing today's opening time.
Compact comparison
| Complement or relation | Choose รู้ | Choose รู้จัก |
|---|---|---|
| fact or proposition | รู้ว่าเขามา | not *รู้จักว่า... |
| answer, name, reason, method | รู้คำตอบ, รู้ชื่อ, รู้วิธี | normally not used |
| personal acquaintance | not bare รู้ + person | รู้จักคุณนิด |
| familiar place/work/organization | รู้เรื่อง... for information | รู้จักร้านนี้ |
| new information | เพิ่งรู้ | not unless acquaintance began |
| acquaintance over time | knowledge state possible | รู้จัก...มานานแล้ว |
Decision tree
- Can the complement answer “what fact?” Use รู้. A ว่า-clause, question word, answer, reason, name, or method belongs here.
- Is the complement a person you are acquainted with? Use รู้จัก. Bare รู้ + person is not the neutral personal-acquaintance frame.
- Is it a place, book, company, song, or similar entity? Use รู้จัก for familiarity or recognition; use รู้ + information expression for facts about it.
- Is the meaning “know how to behave sensibly”? รู้จัก + action can express cultivated judgment, as in รู้จักประหยัด “know to be economical.” This evaluative extension is not ordinary factual knowing.
- What does aspect show? เพิ่งรู้ often marks discovery of information; เพิ่งรู้จัก marks first acquaintance. รู้จัก...มานานแล้ว measures a familiarity relationship continuing to now.
- What is negated? ไม่รู้ denies information; ไม่รู้จัก denies acquaintance/familiarity. The distinction remains in every register.
Place and deictic center do not select the verb by themselves. A nearby restaurant can be รู้จัก as a familiar entity or can supply facts that someone รู้; the type of knowledge relation still decides.
Facts versus acquaintance
Hold the person constant:
ฉันรู้ชื่อคุณวรรณค่ะ
chan ru chue khun wan kha
I know Khun Wan's name. (female speaker; knowledge of one fact)
ฉันรู้จักคุณวรรณค่ะ
chan ru chak khun wan kha
I know/am acquainted with Khun Wan. (female speaker; personal familiarity)
The first sentence does not imply that the two people have met. The second does not tell us whether the speaker remembers the person's full name. English collapses these relations; Thai selects a different predicate.
Facts and embedded questions likewise take รู้:
ผมรู้ว่าคุณวรรณทำงานที่ไหนครับ
phom ru wa khun wan tham ngan thi nai khrap
I know where Khun Wan works. (male speaker; ว่า introduces known information)
ยังไม่มีใครรู้สาเหตุที่แท้จริงค่ะ
yang mai mi khrai ru sahet thi thae ching kha
No one yet knows the real cause. (female speaker; unknown information)
รู้จักว่าคุณวรรณ... is impossible in this propositional function. รู้จัก selects an entity or, in its special evaluative extension, an action—not a neutral ว่า-clause stating a fact.
Familiarity with places and things
With a place, รู้จัก means that the place is in your mental map or experience:
คุณรู้จักร้านกาแฟตรงหัวมุมไหมคะ
khun ru chak ran kafae trong hua mum mai kha
Do you know the coffee shop on the corner? (female speaker; asks about familiarity with the place)
To ask for specific information, name the information under รู้:
คุณรู้ไหมคะว่าร้านกาแฟปิดกี่โมง
khun ru mai kha wa ran kafae pit ki mong
Do you know what time the coffee shop closes? (female speaker; asks for a fact)
The same choice applies to cultural works and organizations. รู้จักเพลงนี้ asks whether the song is familiar; รู้ว่าใครแต่งเพลงนี้ asks who composed it.
ผมรู้จักเพลงนี้ แต่ไม่รู้ว่าใครเป็นคนแต่งครับ
phom ru chak phleng ni tae mai ru wa khrai pen khon taeng khrap
I know this song, but I don't know who composed it. (male speaker; familiarity contrasted with missing information)
Thai does not require an article before เพลงนี้, and the subject may disappear once the discourse makes it obvious.
Time and aspect change the relationship, not the verb
Neither predicate conjugates. A time phrase or aspect expression locates the knowledge state.
ฉันเพิ่งรู้ข่าวเมื่อสิบนาทีก่อนค่ะ
chan phoeng ru khao muea sip nathi kon kha
I only learned the news ten minutes ago. (female speaker; recent acquisition of information)
ฉันเพิ่งรู้จักเพื่อนบ้านคนใหม่เมื่อเช้าค่ะ
chan phoeng ru chak phuean ban khon mai muea chao kha
I only met/got to know the new neighbor this morning. (female speaker; beginning of acquaintance)
ผมรู้จักเจ้าของร้านนี้มาตั้งแต่สมัยเรียนครับ
phom ru chak chao khong ran ni ma tangtae samai rian khrap
I have known this shop's owner since my school days. (male speaker; familiarity continuing to the present)
The pattern มา...ตั้งแต่ measures a state from an earlier point to now. It does not turn รู้จัก into an inflected present perfect. For information, รู้มานานแล้วว่า... can similarly say that a fact has long been known. The broader cognition-verb guide compares รู้ with เข้าใจ, คิด, จำ, and ลืม.
The evaluative extension of รู้จัก
With an action, รู้จัก can praise or demand appropriate judgment: รู้จักประหยัด means “know to save/be sensible enough to economize,” not merely possess instructions for saving. รู้วิธีประหยัด instead means know a method.
เขารู้วิธีลดค่าไฟหลายแบบครับ
khao ru withi lot kha fai lai baep khrap
He knows several ways to reduce the electricity bill. (male speaker; factual procedural knowledge)
ลูกเริ่มรู้จักประหยัดเงินแล้วค่ะ
luk roem ru chak prayat ngoen laeo kha
The child is beginning to learn to be economical with money. (female speaker; approving behavioral judgment)
Because the second construction carries stance, do not treat รู้จัก + verb as a general replacement for English “know how to.” Ability is normally expressed with a suitable verb plus เป็น or ได้, while methods take รู้วิธี.
Resolve an ambiguous English prompt with a cue
“Do you know this restaurant?” has at least two Thai answers. If the speaker wants familiarity:
รู้จักร้านนี้ไหมครับ ผมอยากรู้ว่าอาหารเป็นอย่างไร
ru chak ran ni mai khrap phom yak ru wa ahan pen yangrai
Do you know this restaurant? I'd like to know what the food is like. (male speaker; familiarity requested)
If the speaker wants a specific fact:
รู้ไหมครับว่าร้านนี้รับบัตรเครดิตหรือเปล่า
ru mai khrap wa ran ni rap bat kredit rue plao
Do you know whether this restaurant accepts credit cards? (male speaker; proposition requested)
The added ว่า-clause removes the ambiguity and forces รู้.
Formal dialogue
คุณรู้จักผู้อำนวยการสถาบันนี้เป็นการส่วนตัวไหมครับ
khun ru chak phu amnuai kan sathaban ni pen kan suan tua mai khrap
Do you know the director of this institute personally? (formal-polite question, male speaker; personal acquaintance)
รู้จักค่ะ แต่ดิฉันไม่รู้ว่านโยบายใหม่ผ่านหรือยัง
ru chak kha tae dichan mai ru wa nayobai mai phan rue yang
I do, but I don't know whether the new policy has passed yet. (formal-polite reply, female speaker; acquaintance contrasted with information)
ถ้าทราบผลแล้ว กรุณาแจ้งฝ่ายเลขานุการด้วยครับ
tha sap phon laeo karuna chaeng fai lekhanukan duai khrap
Once you know the result, please notify the secretariat. (formal-polite request, male speaker; ทราบ is a formal alternative to รู้)
Formal ทราบ changes register, not the underlying fact-versus-acquaintance distinction. รู้จัก remains normal for acquaintance even in polite professional speech.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
รู้จักร้านก๋วยเตี๋ยวแถวสถานีไหมคะ
ru chak ran kuaitiao thaeo sathani mai kha
Do you know the noodle shop near the station? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
รู้จักครับ ไปกินบ่อย เจ้าของใจดีมาก
ru chak khrap pai kin boi chao khong chai di mak
Yes, I do. I eat there often; the owner is very kind. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; familiarity supported by experience)
รู้ไหมคะว่าวันอาทิตย์ร้านเปิดหรือเปล่า
ru mai kha wa wan athit ran poet rue plao
Do you know whether it's open on Sunday? (female speaker; asks for a fact)
ไม่รู้ครับ เดี๋ยวผมโทรถามให้
mai ru khrap diao phom tho tham hai
I don't know. I'll call and ask for you. (male speaker; missing information, not missing familiarity)
Common Mistakes
1. Using รู้ with a bare person for acquaintance
❌ ฉันรู้เพื่อนใหม่ของคุณค่ะ
Incorrect for ordinary “I know your new friend”; a person as acquaintance takes รู้จัก.
✅ ฉันรู้จักเพื่อนใหม่ของคุณค่ะ เราเคยทำงานด้วยกัน
chan ru chak phuean mai khong khun kha rao khoei tham ngan duai kan
I know your new friend; we used to work together. (female speaker; acquaintance)
2. Using รู้จัก before a proposition
❌ ผมรู้จักว่าเที่ยวบินถูกยกเลิกครับ
Incorrect: factual ว่า-complements select รู้, not รู้จัก.
✅ ผมรู้ว่าเที่ยวบินถูกยกเลิกครับ
phom ru wa thiao bin thuk yok loek khrap
I know that the flight was canceled. (male speaker; propositional knowledge)
3. Confusing a name with acquaintance
✅ เรารู้ชื่อวิทยากร แต่ยังไม่รู้จักเขาค่ะ
rao ru chue witthayakon tae yang mai ru chak khao kha
We know the speaker's name, but we don't know them personally. (female speaker; fact and acquaintance kept distinct)
4. Treating รู้จัก + action as neutral ability
❌ เขารู้จักขับรถครับ
Wrong as a neutral statement of driving ability; รู้จัก + action carries a different evaluative pattern.
✅ เขาขับรถเป็นครับ แต่ยังไม่ค่อยชำนาญ
khao khap rot pen khrap tae yang mai khoi chamnan
He knows how to drive, but he isn't very skilled yet. (male speaker; learned ability with เป็น)
