Thai can present an ongoing situation with กำลัง + event, event + อยู่, or the bracketed frame กำลัง + event + อยู่. They often describe the same scene, but their contributions are not identical. Preverbal กำลัง foregrounds the dynamic phase as it unfolds. Postpredicate อยู่ presents an activity or condition as holding at the reference time. Using both makes progression and continuation explicit around one complete event phrase.
None of the three is an obligatory “present continuous tense.” A past or projected reference point works with the same forms, and a bare verb can receive an ongoing reading when a question, visible scene, or time phrase supplies it.
Compact comparison
| Speaker's viewpoint | Productive frame | Typical effect |
|---|---|---|
| foreground the event's developing middle | กำลัง + event | process or change is salient |
| say that an activity or condition holds at the reference point | predicate + อยู่ | continuation/current status is salient |
| make both unfolding and holding explicit | กำลัง + event + อยู่ | full bracketed progressive frame |
| let the context supply ongoingness | bare predicate | lighter answer or visible-scene report |
A decision tree from predicate type to discourse need
1. Is there a dynamic activity or change whose internal development matters? Put กำลัง before the whole event.
ทีมกำลังแก้ปัญหาการชำระเงินค่ะ
thim kamlang kae panha kan chamra ngoen kha
The team is working on the payment problem. (formal-polite status report, female voice; unfolding process foregrounded)
อากาศกำลังเย็นลงครับ
akat kamlang yen long khrap
The weather is getting cooler. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; scalar change in progress)
2. Is the point that an activity or condition is still in force at a reference time? Put อยู่ after the complete predicate. This works with activities and maintained states.
ฝ่ายบัญชีตรวจรายการอยู่ค่ะ
fai banchi truat raikan yu kha
Accounting is checking the entries. (formal-polite status report, female voice; activity holding now)
หน้าต่างห้องครัวยังเปิดอยู่ครับ
natang hong khrua yang poet yu khrap
The kitchen window is still open. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; maintained state)
3. Do you want an especially explicit internal view, perhaps because another event interrupts it or because you are correcting an assumption? Bracket the whole event with กำลัง...อยู่.
เจ้าหน้าที่กำลังเปรียบเทียบยอดเงินอยู่ค่ะ
chaonathi kamlang priapthiap yot ngoen yu kha
The officer is comparing the totals. (formal-polite report, female voice; explicit unfolding and continuation)
4. Has the conversation already established “what is happening now”? A bare predicate may be enough.
จัดเอกสารสำหรับพรุ่งนี้ครับ
chat ekkasan samrap phrung ni khrap
Getting the documents ready for tomorrow. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; ongoingness inherited from the question)
The focused กำลัง page, postpredicate อยู่ page, and full-frame page develop the three choices separately.
Minimal contrasts in one shared scene
Imagine a colleague asks where Arun is in the proofreading process. The lexical material remains nearly constant while the viewpoint changes.
อรุณกำลังตรวจต้นฉบับครับ
arun kamlang truat tonchabap khrap
Arun is proofreading the manuscript. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; developing activity foregrounded)
อรุณตรวจต้นฉบับอยู่ครับ
arun truat tonchabap yu khrap
Arun is in the middle of proofreading the manuscript. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; situation holds at the reference point)
อรุณกำลังตรวจต้นฉบับอยู่ครับ
arun kamlang truat tonchabap yu khrap
Arun is currently in the middle of proofreading the manuscript. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; both edges explicit)
All three can be natural. The full frame is not automatically more “present” and does not mean that the work is more intense. It simply expresses both contributions. Conversation often prefers whichever shorter form answers the live question.
Predicate type: process, state, or location?
Dynamic predicates readily accept all three ongoing frames. Stable identity, permanent possession, and inherent properties normally resist กำลัง because they lack an unfolding middle. อยู่ has a wider aspectual range because it can present a maintained condition as existing.
ม่านกำลังเปิดครับ
man kamlang poet khrap
The curtain is opening. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; transition under way)
ม่านเปิดอยู่ครับ
man poet yu khrap
The curtain is open. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; resultant state holding)
The order selects two different event structures: transition versus maintained result. With ยุ่ง, ป่วย, and สนใจ, postpredicate อยู่ can sustain a temporary state; กำลัง is natural only when the context constructs a dynamic or temporary involvement.
ช่วงนี้ฉันสนใจประวัติศาสตร์ท้องถิ่นอยู่ค่ะ
chuang ni chan sonchai prawattisat thongthin yu kha
I'm interested in local history at the moment. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; temporary state maintained)
By contrast, ฉันกำลังสูง cannot ordinarily mean “I am tall.” A growth context needs a dynamic predicate such as กำลังสูงขึ้น “is getting taller.” Predicate type, not the English presence of be, licenses the aspect marker.
Aspectual อยู่ must also be separated from lexical อยู่ “be located/live/stay.”
คุณรินอยู่ที่ห้องสมุดค่ะ
khun rin yu thi hong samut kha
Khun Rin is at the library. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; lexical locative อยู่)
คุณรินอ่านหนังสืออยู่ที่ห้องสมุดค่ะ
khun rin an nangsue yu thi hong samut kha
Khun Rin is reading at the library. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; aspectual อยู่ followed by a location)
The first อยู่ is the location predicate itself. The second follows อ่านหนังสือ and sustains that activity; ที่ห้องสมุด then locates it.
Reference time and deictic center
Without another anchor, the speech event encourages a “now” reading. Move the deictic center with a time clause, and the forms remain unchanged.
ตอนที่ไฟดับ เรากำลังทำอาหารอยู่ค่ะ
ton thi fai dap rao kamlang tham ahan yu kha
When the power went out, we were cooking. (ordinary polite narrative, female speaker; past reference point)
พรุ่งนี้บ่ายสาม ผมคงประชุมอยู่ครับ
phrung ni bai sam phom khong prachum yu khrap
Tomorrow at three, I'll probably be in a meeting. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; projected reference point)
English changes were to will be. Thai time expressions and คง locate the invariant aspectual construction. Calling อยู่ a present-tense auxiliary would wrongly rule out both examples.
An ambiguous bare predicate, resolved by a cue
เขาทำงาน may describe a job, a habit, or what he is doing in the visible scene. Add a cue according to the intended relationship.
เขาทำงานที่คลินิกทุกวันครับ
khao tham ngan thi khlinik thuk wan khrap
He works at the clinic every day. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; habitual cue)
ตอนนี้เขากำลังทำงานอยู่ครับ อย่าเพิ่งโทรหา
ton ni khao kamlang tham ngan yu khrap ya phoeng tho ha
He's working right now; don't call him yet. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; ongoing cue and explicit frame)
The bare version was not grammatically incomplete. The added temporal and interactional cues decide which view the listener should construct.
Negation and scope
Thai does not normally build a neutral progressive negative by copying English is + not + -ing. ไม่ได้ + event + อยู่ commonly denies that the event is in progress. ยัง + predicate + อยู่ says it continues. With a state, ยังไม่... may say the state has not been attained.
ฉันไม่ได้รอรถอยู่ค่ะ กำลังรอเพื่อน
chan mai dai ro rot yu kha kamlang ro phuean
I'm not waiting for a bus; I'm waiting for a friend. (ordinary corrective speech, female speaker; ongoing proposition denied)
ช่างยังตรวจเครื่องอยู่ครับ
chang yang truat khrueang yu khrap
The technician is still inspecting the machine. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; continuation)
The fuller ไม่ได้กำลัง + event + อยู่ is possible when a speaker contrastively denies the progressive framing itself, but it is not the default pattern learners need for every negative sentence.
Formal status dialogue
ขณะนี้เจ้าหน้าที่กำลังตรวจสอบคำร้องอยู่ค่ะ
khana ni chaonathi kamlang truatsop kham rong yu kha
The officer is currently reviewing the request. (formal service update, female voice; explicit ongoing frame)
ระบบขัดข้องอยู่หรือครับ
rabop khatkhong yu rue khrap
Is the system still malfunctioning? (polite question, male customer; continuing condition)
ไม่ได้ขัดข้องค่ะ แต่กำลังเชื่อมต่อฐานข้อมูลใหม่
mai dai khatkhong kha tae kamlang chueamto than khomun mai
It isn't malfunctioning; it is connecting to a new database. (formal-polite correction, female officer; denied state versus unfolding process)
Formal register favors nouns such as ขณะนี้ and ตรวจสอบคำร้อง, but the aspectual division remains the same as in conversation.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
ตอนนี้ทำอะไรอยู่คะ
ton ni tham arai yu kha
What are you doing now? (ordinary polite question, female speaker; current activity requested)
กำลังล้างจานอยู่ครับ เหลืออีกนิดเดียว
kamlang lang chan yu khrap luea ik nit diao
I'm washing the dishes; there are only a few left. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; explicit frame, subject omitted)
เสร็จแล้วช่วยเอาขยะลงไปทิ้งได้ไหมคะ
set laeo chuai ao khaya long pai thing dai mai kha
When you're done, could you take the rubbish down? (ordinary polite request, female speaker)
ได้ครับ เดี๋ยวจัดการให้
dai khrap diao chatkan hai
Sure. I'll take care of it. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
The question already establishes ongoingness, so even ล้างจานครับ would be a natural short reply. Thai can omit subjects and aspectual edges when the discourse carries them.
Common Mistakes
1. Putting aspectual อยู่ before the activity
❌ เขากำลังอยู่เขียนใบสมัครค่ะ
Incorrect progressive order—กำลัง precedes the event, while aspectual อยู่ follows the complete event.
✅ เขาเขียนใบสมัครอยู่ค่ะ
khao khian bai samak yu kha
She's filling out an application. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
2. Leaving the object outside the frame
❌ ผมกำลังซ่อมอยู่จักรยานครับ
Incorrect—the object belongs inside the event before postpredicate อยู่.
✅ ผมกำลังซ่อมจักรยานของน้องอยู่ครับ
phom kamlang som chakkayan khong nong yu khrap
I'm repairing my younger sibling's bicycle. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
3. Forcing a stable property into กำลัง
✅ อาคารใหม่กำลังสูงขึ้นเรื่อย ๆ ค่ะ
akhan mai kamlang sung khuen rueai rueai kha
The new building is getting progressively taller. (female speaker; สูงขึ้น supplies a developing change that licenses กำลัง)
✅ อาคารนี้สูงกว่าตึกข้าง ๆ ค่ะ
akhan ni sung kwa tuek khang khang kha
This building is taller than the one next to it. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; stable comparison without progressive aspect)
4. Treating the full frame as obligatory
ดูข่าวครับ
du khao khrap
Watching the news. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; natural after ทำอะไรอยู่)
Omitting both edges is possible because the question supplies the reference frame. It does not turn the reply into a different tense.
5. Confusing imminent with ongoing
รถกำลังจะออกจากสถานีครับ กรุณาขึ้นรถทันที
rot kamlang cha ok chak sathani khrap karuna khuen rot thanthi
The vehicle is about to leave the station; please board immediately. (formal-polite announcement, male voice; departure has not started)
รถกำลังเคลื่อนออกจากสถานีครับ โปรดยืนหลังเส้นสีเหลือง
rot kamlang khluean ok chak sathani khrap prot yuen lang sen si lueang
The vehicle is moving out of the station; please stand behind the yellow line. (formal-polite announcement, male voice; departure already under way)
Key Takeaways
- Use กำลัง + event to foreground a dynamic phase and predicate + อยู่ to present an activity or condition as holding.
- Use กำลัง + event + อยู่ when both contributions should be explicit; neither edge is obligatory in every ongoing context.
- Dynamic events allow the widest overlap. Stable properties resist กำลัง, while อยู่ can maintain temporary or resultant states.
- Time expressions move the reference point into past or projected scenes without changing the verb or aspect marker.
- Objects and serial material stay inside the frame; subjects may disappear when discourse identifies the participants.
