English often translates both แล้ว and เคย with a perfect form, but Thai asks two different questions. [event or state] + แล้ว presents an attainment or change as relevant to a reference point: the form has arrived, the meal is finished, or someone is now hungry. เคย + predicate asks whether that situation belongs anywhere in someone's prior experience: has the person ever submitted such a form, eaten that dish, or worked there before?
Position reflects scope. แล้ว follows the situation it evaluates; เคย precedes the whole predicate. Neither is a past-tense ending, and they can occur together when both experience and prior attainment matter.
Compact comparison
| Discourse question | Productive frame | Typical interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Has the relevant event been attained? | event + แล้ว | completed or attained event with current/reference-time relevance |
| Has the situation become true now? | state + แล้ว | change into a state: “now,” “already” |
| Does this appear in prior experience? | เคย + predicate | ever/before; former habit or state with a durative predicate |
| Is an expected event still pending? | ยังไม่ได้ + event | not yet, contrasting with attained แล้ว |
| Has there never been such an experience? | ไม่เคย + predicate | never, contrasting with experiential เคย |
A decision tree: task status or life record?
1. Is the conversation tracking one expected, identifiable event or a newly reached state? Choose แล้ว after the complete event or state.
ฉันส่งแบบประเมินแล้วค่ะ
chan song baep pramoen laeo kha
I've submitted the evaluation form. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker; expected task attained)
คุณพ่อหายเหนื่อยแล้วครับ
khun pho hai nueai laeo khrap
Dad isn't tired anymore. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; changed state now relevant)
2. Is the point whether the participant has encountered the situation at least once before? Choose เคย before the predicate.
ฉันเคยส่งแบบประเมินในระบบนี้ค่ะ
chan khoei song baep pramoen nai rabop ni kha
I've submitted an evaluation in this system before. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker; prior experience)
คุณพ่อเคยเหนื่อยง่ายตอนพักฟื้นครับ
khun pho khoei nueai ngai ton phakfuen khrap
Dad used to tire easily while recovering. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; former state)
3. Do both questions matter? The markers can co-occur: เคย + event + แล้ว presents the experience as already established relative to a current proposal or assumption.
ร้านนั้นฉันเคยลองแล้วค่ะ คราวนี้ไปอีกร้านกันไหมคะ
ran nan chan khoei long laeo kha khrao ni pai ik ran kan mai kha
I've tried that restaurant before; shall we go to another one this time? (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; established experience used to reject a repeat)
The detailed prior-experience page and event-completion page develop each marker separately.
Minimal pairs with the vocabulary held constant
The same event can answer a status question or an experience question.
คุณอ่านรายงานฉบับนี้แล้วหรือยังคะ
khun an raingan chabap ni laeo rue yang kha
Have you read this report yet? (ordinary polite question, female speaker; expected task status)
คุณเคยอ่านรายงานฉบับนี้ไหมคะ
khun khoei an raingan chabap ni mai kha
Have you ever read this report? (ordinary polite question, female speaker; prior experience)
ผมเข้าพักที่โรงแรมนี้แล้วครับ
phom khao phak thi rongraem ni laeo khrap
I've checked in at this hotel now. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; current itinerary stage attained)
ผมเคยเข้าพักที่โรงแรมนี้ครับ
phom khoei khao phak thi rongraem ni khrap
I've stayed at this hotel before. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; prior experience)
In the hotel pair, แล้ว relates check-in to the current trip's expected sequence. เคย searches the guest's experience record without asserting anything about today's check-in.
Predicate type changes the reading
With a bounded task, final แล้ว readily suggests attainment, though the predicate and context determine whether the endpoint is total. อ่านไปยี่สิบหน้าแล้ว means “has read twenty pages,” not necessarily the whole book. Add จบ, หมด, a result, or a quantity when the endpoint must be explicit.
ผมตรวจไปสิบรายการแล้วครับ ยังเหลืออีกห้ารายการ
phom truat pai sip raikan laeo khrap yang luea ik ha raikan
I've checked ten items; five still remain. (formal-polite report, male voice; attained progress, not total completion)
With a state, แล้ว often marks entry into a new condition: พร้อมแล้ว “ready now,” เงียบแล้ว “quiet now.” Preverbal เคย instead places a state in an earlier experiential domain and may suggest—but does not entail—that it ended.
ห้องประชุมเงียบแล้วค่ะ เริ่มบันทึกเสียงได้
hong prachum ngiap laeo kha roem banthuek siang dai
The meeting room is quiet now; we can start recording. (formal-polite report, female voice; changed state)
ห้องนี้เคยเงียบกว่านี้ค่ะ ก่อนสร้างถนน
hong ni khoei ngiap kwa ni kha kon sang thanon
This room used to be quieter before the road was built. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; former state)
Stable possession and identity can take เคย with a former reading—เคยเป็นครู “used to be a teacher”—but final แล้ว requires a coherent change reading—เป็นครูแล้ว “is a teacher now.” The markers do not convert every predicate into the same English tense.
An ambiguous form resolved by an added cue
เขาเคยทำแล้ว can be understood as “he has done it before/already,” but the listener needs context to know whether experience or current task status is central. Separate the questions with explicit cues.
งานรอบนี้เขาทำเสร็จแล้วครับ
ngan rop ni khao tham set laeo khrap
He has finished this round of work. (formal-polite report, male voice; current task status)
งานแบบนี้เขาเคยทำเมื่อสองปีก่อนครับ
ngan baep ni khao khoei tham muea song pi kon khrap
He did this kind of work once two years ago. (formal-polite report, male voice; prior experience)
A dated phrase does not make เคย impossible. The second speaker still treats the occasion as evidence in an experiential record. What is unnatural is adding เคย to every dated narrative merely because English uses a past form.
Negation and the expected contrast
Use ไม่เคย + predicate for “never.” Use ยังไม่ได้ + event when one expected event remains pending. For a changed decision or cessation, ไม่ + predicate + แล้ว can mean “no longer / will not ... anymore.”
ฉันไม่เคยสัมภาษณ์งานทางวิดีโอค่ะ
chan mai khoei samphat ngan thang widio kha
I've never had a job interview by video. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; no prior experience)
ฉันยังไม่ได้ส่งวิดีโอแนะนำตัวค่ะ
chan yang mai dai song widio naenam tua kha
I haven't sent the introduction video yet. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; expected event pending)
บริษัทไม่รับใบสมัครทางไปรษณีย์แล้วครับ
borisat mai rap bai samak thang praisani laeo khrap
The company no longer accepts applications by post. (formal-polite statement, male voice; changed policy)
Here final แล้ว scopes over a negative predicate. It does not mean that “not accepting” is completed in the past; it marks a change into the current policy.
Formal administrative dialogue
ผู้สมัครเคยลงทะเบียนกับหน่วยงานนี้ไหมคะ
phu samak khoei long thabian kap nuaingan ni mai kha
Has the applicant ever registered with this agency? (formal-polite question, female officer; prior experience)
เคยครับ แต่ผมส่งใบสมัครชุดใหม่แล้ว
khoei khrap tae phom song bai samak chut mai laeo
Yes, but I've submitted a new application package now. (polite reply, male applicant; experience versus current task)
ตรวจสอบแล้วค่ะ เอกสารชุดใหม่เข้าระบบแล้ว
truatsop laeo kha ekkasan chut mai khao rabop laeo
I've checked; the new documents are now in the system. (formal-polite reply, female officer; attained result)
The officer's first แล้ว reports a completed check; the second marks the documents' newly relevant system status. Neither is a compulsory past ending.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
เคยกินแกงร้านนี้ไหมคะ
khoei kin kaeng ran ni mai kha
Have you ever eaten this restaurant's curry? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
ยังไม่เคยครับ คุณสั่งแล้วหรือยัง
yang mai khoei khrap khun sang laeo rue yang
Not yet. Have you ordered? (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; experience versus current sequence)
สั่งแล้วค่ะ อีกสักครู่น่าจะมา
sang laeo kha ik sak khru na cha ma
Yes. It should come in a moment. (ordinary polite reply, female speaker; order attained)
ดีครับ ถ้าอร่อยคราวหน้าผมจะสั่งเอง
di khrap tha aroi khrao na phom cha sang eng
Great. If it's good, I'll order it myself next time. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
Repeated subjects and objects disappear once recoverable. Thai does not need English articles or obligatory pronouns to keep the aspect contrast clear.
Common Mistakes
1. Putting เคย after its event
❌ ผมไปเที่ยวเคยสุโขทัยครับ
Incorrect—experiential เคย precedes the complete travel event.
✅ ผมเคยไปเที่ยวสุโขทัยกับเพื่อนครับ
phom khoei pai thiao sukhothai kap phuean khrap
I've visited Sukhothai with friends before. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
2. Putting แล้ว before the object
❌ ฉันอ่านแล้วจดหมายค่ะ
Incorrect neutral order—the object belongs inside the attained event before แล้ว.
✅ ฉันอ่านจดหมายจากโรงเรียนแล้วค่ะ
chan an chotmai chak rongrian laeo kha
I've read the letter from the school. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; relevant event attained)
3. Using เคย merely because an event is dated
✅ ตอนฝึกงานเมื่อสองปีก่อน ฉันเคยเจอหัวหน้าที่ลิฟต์หลายครั้งค่ะ
ton fuek ngan muea song pi kon chan khoei choe huana thi lip lai khrang kha
During my internship two years ago, I encountered the supervisor at the elevator several times. (female speaker; dated former experience with repeated occasions)
✅ เมื่อเช้าฉันเจอหัวหน้าที่ลิฟต์ค่ะ
muea chao chan choe huana thi lip kha
I met the supervisor at the elevator this morning. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; dated event)
4. Assuming แล้ว always means total completion
ฉันอ่านไปสามบทแล้วค่ะ แต่ยังไม่จบ
chan an pai sam bot laeo kha tae yang mai chop
I've read three chapters, but I haven't finished. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; attained progress)
Completion comes from the event shape and endpoint expressions, not from แล้ว alone.
5. Translating an English perfect before identifying the Thai question
English Have you worked here? may ask about prior experience (เคยทำงานที่นี่ไหม) or whether today's assigned work is finished (ทำงานที่นี่เสร็จแล้วหรือยัง, with a suitable task context). Choose the discourse relationship first; do not translate the auxiliary have word by word.
Key Takeaways
- Use event/state + แล้ว for an attained event, relevant result, or changed situation.
- Use เคย + predicate to place an event, habit, or state within prior experience.
- แล้ว opposes a pending ยังไม่ได้ event; เคย opposes ไม่เคย “never.”
- The markers can co-occur when an experience is already established, but they are not a compound tense.
- Predicate type, discourse expectations, and reference point determine the reading; English tense and articles do not.
