ทำ: do; make; work at

Thai ทำ is an invariant verb whose core territory includes doing work, carrying out an activity, and making or preparing something. It also supports many established collocations and the causative construction ทำให้ + participant + predicate. English divides the same territory among do, make, work, take, and more specific verbs, so a useful reference must show frames and collocations rather than offer one translation.

Core doing and making frames

With an activity noun, ทำ presents carrying out that activity. With a created or prepared object, it presents producing it. The boundary is semantic, not a formal change in the verb.

UseFrameNatural substitution

คืนนี้ผมต้องทำรายงานให้เสร็จครับ

khuen ni phom tong tham raingan hai set khrap

I have to finish the report tonight. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker)

คุณพ่อกำลังทำชั้นวางรองเท้าใหม่ค่ะ

khun pho kamlang tham chan wang rong thao mai kha

Father is making a new shoe rack. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; concrete product)

วันอาทิตย์แม่ทำอาหารไว้หลายอย่างครับ

wan athit mae tham ahan wai lai yang khrap

On Sunday Mother prepares several dishes in advance. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; preparation with ไว้)

In ทำรายงาน, the object names the task or product. In ทำอาหาร, English ordinarily chooses cook or prepare, but Thai uses ทำ naturally. This does not license ทำ before every activity: Thai says อาบน้ำ “bathe,” เดินเล่น “take a walk,” and ตัดสินใจ “decide” without adding ทำ.

💡
Learn ทำ + noun combinations as whole predicates. The verb is productive, but English do/make is not a safe test for whether Thai uses ทำ.

An invariant-form matrix

ทำ does not agree with its subject and does not acquire tense endings. The same form sits inside different time, aspect, result, and negation environments.

EnvironmentThai patternInterpretation source
past contextเมื่อวานผมทำอาหารเมื่อวาน
ongoing activityฉันกำลังทำใบเสนอราคากำลัง
completed resultเขาทำงานส่วนนี้เสร็จแล้วเสร็จ and แล้ว
prospectiveพวกเราจะทำความสะอาดห้องจะ
negativeวันนี้เขาไม่ทำงานไม่ before ทำงาน

เมื่อวานผมทำอาหารให้เพื่อนที่บ้านครับ

muea wan phom tham ahan hai phuean thi ban khrap

Yesterday I cooked for a friend at home. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; past supplied by เมื่อวาน)

ฉันกำลังทำใบเสนอราคาอยู่ค่ะ

chan kamlang tham bai sanoe rakha yu kha

I'm preparing a quotation. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker; ongoing activity)

เขาทำงานส่วนนี้เสร็จแล้วครับ

khao tham ngan suan ni set laeo khrap

He has finished this part of the work. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker)

พวกเราจะทำความสะอาดห้องเก็บของค่ะ

phuak rao cha tham khwam sa at hong kep khong kha

We'll clean the storage room. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker)

The result predicate เสร็จ identifies completion; แล้ว presents the new completed situation. Neither is a suffix on ทำ. Similarly, กำลัง...อยู่ gives an ongoing viewpoint without changing the headword.

Employment: ทำงานที่, ทำงานด้าน, and ทำงานเป็น

For “work,” the ordinary predicate is ทำงาน. What follows states a workplace, field, or role:

FrameMeaningExample
ทำงานที่ + workplacework atทำงานที่โรงพยาบาล
ทำงานด้าน + fieldwork in the field ofทำงานด้านบัญชี
ทำงานเป็น + rolework asทำงานเป็นนักออกแบบ
ทำงานกับ + person/teamwork withทำงานกับทีมใหม่

พี่ชายผมทำงานที่โรงพยาบาลครับ

phi chai phom tham ngan thi rongphayaban khrap

My older brother works at a hospital. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; workplace with ที่)

เธอทำงานเป็นนักออกแบบให้บริษัทเล็ก ๆ ค่ะ

thoe tham ngan pen nak ok baep hai borisat lek lek kha

She works as a designer for a small company. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; role with เป็น)

ทำที่บริษัท can mean “do it at the company” if a task is recoverable. It does not by itself reliably mean “work for the company”; include งาน for the employment reading.

Common collocations

CollocationNatural meaningRegister
ทำงานworkneutral
ทำอาหารcook / prepare foodneutral
ทำการบ้านdo homeworkneutral
ทำความสะอาดcleanneutral
ทำธุรกิจdo/run businessbusiness-neutral
ทำผิดdo wrong / make a mistakeneutral

ถ้าผมทำผิด ช่วยแก้ให้ด้วยนะครับ

tha phom tham phit chuai kae hai duai na khrap

If I make a mistake, please correct me. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

ครอบครัวเธอทำธุรกิจขายวัสดุก่อสร้างค่ะ

khropkhrua thoe tham thurakit khai watsadu ko sang kha

Her family runs a construction-materials business. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

These are established combinations, not freely interchangeable templates. More formal writing may select ดำเนินการ “carry out/implement” for an official process, but that is a lexical register choice, not a different formal grammar.

ทำให้ and other adjacent predicates

In cause + ทำให้ + participant + predicate, ทำให้ presents the first situation as causing the second. It is structurally different from making a physical object.

การนอนน้อยทำให้ผมปวดหัวครับ

kan non noi tham hai phom puat hua khrap

Not sleeping enough gives me a headache. (ordinary polite explanation, male speaker; caused bodily state)

ข้อมูลที่ชัดเจนทำให้ลูกค้าตัดสินใจง่ายขึ้นค่ะ

khomun thi chatchen tham hai luk kha tatsinchai ngai khuen kha

Clear information makes it easier for customers to decide. (formal-polite business explanation, female speaker)

The participant after ให้ belongs with the following predicate: ลูกค้า + ตัดสินใจ. This is not “make + object + infinitive” imported from English. Thai uses a sequence of invariant predicates with its own argument structure. See ทำ as Do, Make, and Light Verb for further causative contrasts.

💡
Distinguish ทำ + thing from ทำให้ + participant + predicate. The former carries out or creates; the latter links a cause to a resulting situation.

Negation, ability, and omission

Use ไม่ทำ for refusal, habit, or a negated plan; ไม่ได้ทำ to deny that an event occurred; and ทำไม่ได้ for inability or impossibility. Word order determines scope.

วันนี้ผมไม่ทำงานล่วงเวลาครับ

wan ni phom mai tham ngan luang wela khrap

I'm not working overtime today. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

ส่วนนี้ทำไม่ได้ค่ะ เพราะยังไม่มีข้อมูล

suan ni tham mai dai kha phro yang mai mi khomun

This part can't be done because there is no information yet. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker)

When the task is active, an object may disappear: กำลังทำอยู่ครับ “I'm working on it.” Without a prior question or visible task, add the object.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

ใบเสนอราคาของลูกค้าใหม่ทำเสร็จหรือยังคะ

bai sanoe rakha khong luk kha mai tham set rue yang kha

Is the new customer's quotation finished yet? (ordinary polite workplace question, female speaker)

กำลังทำอยู่ครับ เหลือแค่ตรวจตัวเลข

kamlang tham yu khrap luea khae truat tua lek

I'm working on it; only checking the figures remains. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; quotation omitted recoverably)

งั้นฉันทำหน้าปกให้ค่ะ

ngan chan tham na pok hai kha

Then I'll make the cover page for you. (ordinary polite offer, female speaker)

ขอบคุณครับ แบบนี้เราน่าจะทำเสร็จทัน

khopkhun khrap baep ni rao na cha tham set than

Thank you. This way we should finish in time. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)

Common Mistakes

1. Translating every English activity with ทำ

❌ ทุกเย็นฉันทำอาบน้ำหลังออกกำลังกายค่ะ

Incorrect—อาบน้ำ is already the lexical predicate ‘bathe/shower.’

✅ ทุกเย็นฉันอาบน้ำหลังออกกำลังกายค่ะ

thuk yen chan ap nam lang ok kamlang kai kha

Every evening I shower after exercising. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

2. Omitting งาน in the employment frame

❌ พี่ชายฉันทำที่โรงแรมค่ะ

Unclear for the intended employment reading; it sounds like he does an understood task at the hotel.

✅ พี่ชายฉันทำงานที่โรงแรมใกล้ทะเลค่ะ

phi chai chan tham ngan thi rongraem klai thale kha

My older brother works at a hotel near the sea. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

3. Using English auxiliary negation order

❌ วันนี้ผมทำไม่รายงานครับ

Incorrect—Thai does not use ทำ as English auxiliary do before negation.

✅ วันนี้ผมไม่ทำรายงานฉบับนั้นครับ

wan ni phom mai tham raingan chabap nan khrap

I'm not working on that report today. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

4. Omitting ให้ from a causative

❌ เสียงจากการก่อสร้างทำเด็กตื่นค่ะ

Incorrect for the intended caused-result frame; ทำ alone does not introduce the child's waking event.

✅ เสียงจากการก่อสร้างทำให้เด็กข้างห้องตื่นค่ะ

siang chak kan ko sang tham hai dek khang hong tuen kha

The construction noise woke the child next door. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

5. Treating ได้ as an automatic past marker

❌ เมื่อวานผมได้ทำงานที่บ้านครับ

Misleading for the intended neutral past report—ได้ adds realization or opportunity rather than simply past time.

✅ เมื่อวานผมทำงานที่บ้านทั้งวันครับ

muea wan phom tham ngan thi ban thang wan khrap

Yesterday I worked at home all day. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • ทำ + activity/product covers a broad domain of doing and making, but natural collocations must be learned.
  • Use ทำงาน + ที่/ด้าน/เป็น... for workplace, field, and occupational role.
  • ทำให้ + participant + predicate presents a caused result; it is not the form for creating every object.
  • ทำ never conjugates. Time, aspect, result predicates, negation order, and discourse build the clause.
