ทำให้ links a cause to a resulting event or state: “X causes Y to happen” or “X makes Y become a certain way.” It is built from ทำ “do/make” and ให้ “give/let,” but the causative construction has its own participant pattern. The phrase before ทำให้ supplies the cause; what follows identifies the person or thing affected and the result that holds of it.
English make covers deliberate coercion, physical production, and ordinary causation. Thai does not collapse all three into one frame. ทำให้ is especially natural when the speaker foregrounds the causal link and its outcome; deliberate orders and permissions are often expressed more precisely with สั่งให้, บังคับให้, อนุญาตให้, or causative ให้.
The core result frame
The productive pattern is cause + ทำให้ + result holder + result predicate. The result holder is interpreted as the subject of the following predicate, not as an object meaning “to” or “for.”
| Cause | Link | Result holder | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| ฝนตกหนัก | ทำให้ | ถนนเส้นนี้ | น้ำท่วม |
| ข่าวนี้ | ทำให้ | ทุกคน | กังวล |
| การเปิดหน้าต่าง | ทำให้ | ห้อง | เย็นลง |
| ควัน | ทำให้ | ฉัน | หายใจลำบาก |
ฝนตกหนักทำให้ถนนเส้นนี้น้ำท่วมครับ
fon tok nak tham hai thanon sen ni nam thuam khrap
The heavy rain caused this road to flood. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
ข่าวนี้ทำให้ทุกคนกังวลค่ะ
khao ni tham hai thuk khon kangwon kha
This news is making everyone worried. (ordinary polite statement, female speaker)
Nothing in ทำให้ conjugates. Past reference can come from เมื่อวาน, prospective reference from จะ, and an ongoing change from กำลัง...อยู่. The result can be an action (ตื่น “wake up”), a property predicate (กังวล “worried”), or a change expression (เย็นลง “become cooler”).
การเปิดหน้าต่างทำให้ห้องเย็นลงค่ะ
kan poet natang tham hai hong yen long kha
Opening the window makes the room cooler. (ordinary polite explanation, female speaker)
เสียงเตือนดังมากจนทำให้ผมตื่นครับ
siang tuean dang mak chon tham hai phom tuen khrap
The alarm was so loud that it woke me up. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
Result states and result events
The result need not be a static property. Compare เสียงดังทำให้เด็กตื่น “the noise causes the child to wake” with เสียงดังทำให้เด็กกลัว “the noise makes the child afraid.” The first introduces an event; the second attributes an emotional state. Both use the same causative link because the cause–result relation is foregrounded.
ไฟดับทำให้ลิฟต์หยุดอยู่ระหว่างชั้นค่ะ
fai dap tham hai lip yut yu rawang chan kha
The power outage caused the lift to stop between floors. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
คำอธิบายทีละขั้นทำให้เรื่องนี้เข้าใจง่ายขึ้นครับ
kham athibai thi la khan tham hai rueang ni khao chai ngai khuen khrap
The step-by-step explanation makes this easier to understand. (ordinary polite assessment, male speaker)
In the second example, เรื่องนี้ is what becomes easier to understand; no overt human experiencer is necessary. Such omission is licensed by a general or recoverable interpretation. It is not a passive transformation.
For a produced object, lexical ทำ is enough: ช่างทำชั้นวางของ “the craftsperson makes a shelf.” Add ทำให้ only when a distinct consequence follows: ช่างทำชั้นให้เตี้ยลง “the craftsperson makes the shelf lower.” See the lexical frames of ทำ.
Deliberate causation needs context
ทำให้ can describe a person deliberately bringing about a result, but by itself it does not specify whether that person ordered, forced, persuaded, or merely caused it. When the social relation matters, Thai normally chooses a more precise predicate.
หัวหน้าสั่งให้ทีมแก้รายงานภายในวันนี้ครับ
hua na sang hai thim kae raingan phai nai wan ni khrap
The supervisor ordered the team to revise the report today. (ordinary workplace report, male speaker; explicit directive)
คำร้องเรียนหลายฉบับทำให้หัวหน้าเปลี่ยนแผนค่ะ
kham rongrian lai chabap tham hai hua na plian phaen kha
Several complaints caused the supervisor to change the plan. (formal-neutral explanation, female speaker; resulting decision)
The first sentence identifies an order through สั่งให้. The second presents the complaints as the cause of a decision. Translating both with English made conceals this Thai distinction.
Benefactive ให้ versus causative ทำให้
The position of ให้ matters. In ทำอาหารให้แม่, lexical ทำอาหาร is followed by a beneficiary: “cook food for Mother.” In อาหารเผ็ดทำให้แม่ไอ, the whole first phrase is the cause and แม่ไอ is the result: “spicy food makes Mother cough.”
ฉันทำซุปให้คุณยายค่ะ
chan tham sup hai khun yai kha
I made soup for Grandma. (ordinary polite statement, female speaker; benefactive ให้)
ซุปร้อนเกินไปทำให้คุณยายกินช้าลงค่ะ
sup ron koen pai tham hai khun yai kin cha long kha
The soup being too hot made Grandma eat more slowly. (ordinary polite explanation, female speaker; caused result)
The distinction is structural, not just lexical: V + object + ให้ + beneficiary adds someone for whom an action is done, whereas cause + ทำให้ + participant + predicate introduces a new result predication. The causative use of ให้ adds yet another participant pattern.
Negation and aspect scope
Negation goes immediately before the domain it denies. ไม่ทำให้... denies the causal link. ทำให้คนไข้ไม่ง่วง asserts a cause whose result is “the patient is not sleepy.” ไม่ได้ทำให้... commonly denies that a completed or alleged cause–result event actually occurred.
| Pattern | Scope | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| ไม่ทำให้ + result | causal link | does not cause the result |
| ทำให้ + participant + ไม่ + predicate | result predicate | causes a negative result |
| ไม่ได้ทำให้ + result | realization/claim | did not in fact cause it |
| กำลังทำให้ + change | ongoing causation | is currently bringing about change |
ยานี้ทำให้คนไข้ไม่ง่วงค่ะ
ya ni tham hai khon khai mai nguang kha
This medicine keeps the patient from feeling sleepy. (formal-neutral medical explanation, female speaker; negation inside the result)
การแก้เมนูไม่ได้ทำให้ข้อมูลเดิมหายครับ
kan kae menu mai dai tham hai khomun doem hai khrap
Editing the menu did not make the existing information disappear. (ordinary polite technical explanation, male speaker; denied causation)
ราคาน้ำมันกำลังทำให้ต้นทุนการขนส่งสูงขึ้นครับ
rakha namman kamlang tham hai tonthun kan khon song sung khuen khrap
Fuel prices are currently pushing transport costs higher. (formal-neutral update, male speaker; ongoing caused change)
แล้ว can mark the result as newly relevant: ความล่าช้าทำให้ลูกค้าเปลี่ยนใจแล้ว “the delay has now caused the customer to change their mind.” It is not a past-tense ending on ทำให้.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
Two colleagues discuss a delayed delivery.
อะไรทำให้ของมาถึงช้าคะ
arai tham hai khong ma thueng cha kha
What caused the goods to arrive late? (polite question, female speaker)
ฝนตกหนักทำให้รถส่งของออกจากคลังช้าครับ
fon tok nak tham hai rot song khong ok chak khlang cha khrap
Heavy rain caused the delivery truck to leave the warehouse late. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
ความล่าช้าจะทำให้ลูกค้ายกเลิกคำสั่งซื้อไหมคะ
khwam la cha cha tham hai luk kha yokloek kham sang sue mai kha
Will the delay cause the customer to cancel the order? (polite question, female speaker)
ไม่น่าจะยกเลิกครับ แต่ผมจะโทรไปอธิบาย
mai na cha yokloek khrap tae phom cha tho pai athibai
They probably won't cancel, but I'll call to explain. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; cause omitted from the reply as recoverable)
Common Mistakes
1. Inserting เป็น before the causative
❌ ฝนเป็นทำให้รถติดค่ะ
Incorrect English-style copular insertion; ทำให้ itself links the cause and result.
✅ ฝนตกต่อเนื่องทำให้รถติดค่ะ
fon tok ton nueang tham hai rot tit kha
The continuous rain is causing traffic congestion. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
2. Reversing the cause and result holder
❌ เสียงดังฉันทำให้ตื่นค่ะ
Incorrect for ‘the noise woke me’; ฉัน has been placed before the causative link.
✅ เสียงดังทำให้ฉันตื่นค่ะ
siang dang tham hai chan tuen kha
The noise woke me up. (ordinary polite statement, female speaker)
3. Confusing a beneficiary with a caused result
❌ ฉันทำอาหารทำให้แม่ค่ะ
Incorrect for ‘I cooked for Mother’; no result predicate follows ทำให้.
✅ ฉันทำอาหารเย็นให้แม่ค่ะ
chan tham ahan yen hai mae kha
I cooked dinner for Mother. (ordinary polite statement, female speaker; benefactive ให้)
4. Putting negation before the result holder
❌ ยานี้ทำให้ไม่คนไข้ง่วงค่ะ
Incorrect order; the result holder precedes the predicate that ไม่ negates.
✅ ยาชนิดนี้ทำให้ผู้ป่วยไม่ง่วงค่ะ
ya chanit ni tham hai phu puai mai nguang kha
This type of medicine keeps the patient from feeling sleepy. (formal-neutral explanation, female speaker)
5. Using ทำให้ for a neutral instruction
❌ หัวหน้าทำให้ผมส่งรายงานก่อนเที่ยงครับ
Wrong for the intended neutral report ‘the supervisor told me to send it’; ทำให้ presents coercive or result-focused causation.
✅ หัวหน้าบอกให้ผมส่งรายงานก่อนเที่ยงครับ
hua na bok hai phom song raingan kon thiang khrap
The supervisor told me to send the report before noon. (ordinary polite workplace report, male speaker)
Key Takeaways
- Build cause + ทำให้ + result holder + result predicate.
- Use lexical ทำ for doing or producing, and benefactive ให้ for doing something for someone.
- Choose สั่งให้, บังคับให้, or อนุญาตให้ when the precise social force matters.
- Place ไม่ before the causal link or inside the result according to intended scope.
- Time and aspect come from context and particles; ทำให้ itself never conjugates.
